Abstract

Research indicates that built-in immunity to retroviruses results from DNA deamination as shown by the incorporation of DNA deaminase into virions during viral development triggering viral destruction. Data show that the enzyme is involved in a massive deamination of deoxycytidine to deoxyuridine within the retroviral cDNA strand.
