An oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the key half reaction of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), and is highly dependent on Pt-based nanocrystals as core electrocatalysts. Despite the exceptional ORR activity from adjusting the electronic structures of surface or near-surface atoms, several serious issues, including the corrosion of carbon supports, the preferential leaching of active metal elements, the instability of surface low-coordinated atoms and the sintering/agglomeration of nanocrystals, still exist, challenging the ORR durability of developed Pt-based ORR catalysts. From the point of view of the catalyst structure design, in this review, we summarized the state-of-the-art structural regulation strategies for improving the ORR durability of Pt-based catalysts. The current limitation of Pt-based binary catalysts for ORR electrocatalysis is firstly discussed, and the detailed strategies are further classified into the optimization of supports, metal-doped alloys, core/shell structures, intermetallics and high-entropy alloys, etc. The structure–performance relationship is detailedly explained, especially emphasizing the elimination of the above restrictions. Finally, the existing challenges and future research direction are further presented, aiming at practicing the PEMFC devices of the ultradurable Pt-based catalysts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) represent a breed of eco-friendly, weather-independent, decentralized power generation technologies, distinguished for their broad fuel versatility and superior electricity generation efficiency. At present, SOFCs are impeded by a lack of highly efficient oxygen reduction catalysts, a factor that significantly constrains their performance. The double perovskites LnBaCo2O5+δ (Ln = Lanthanide), renowned for their accelerated oxygen exchange and conductivity features, are widely acclaimed as a promising category of cathode catalysts for SOFCs. This manuscript offers a novel perspective on the physicochemical attributes of LnBaCo2O5+δ accumulated over the past two decades and delineates the latest advancements in fine-tuning the composition and nanostructure for SOFC applications. It highlights surface chemistry under operational conditions and microstructure as emerging research focal points towards achieving high-performance LnBaCo2O5+δ catalysts. This review offers a comprehensive insight into the latest advancements in utilizing LnBaCo2O5+δ in the field of SOFCs, presenting a clear roadmap for future developmental trajectories. Transition metal and heteroatom co-doped carbon nanomaterials (TM-H-C) are considered to be the most promising candidates to replace the expensive platinum-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). Herein, we report a semi-closed molten salt-assisted one-step strategy for fabricating N-P-Fe-tridoped porous carbon nanotube (CNT) catalysts by using the evaporation of ZnCl2 and the catalysis of iron ions to control the heteroatoms doping process and CNT formation. The resultant densely packed porous CNT structure imparts final catalysts with an enhanced mass transfer ability for electron and ORR-involved species, ensuring a high performance in catalyzing the ORR. Significantly, the optimal catalysts show a half-wave potential of 0.89 V (vs. RHE), which is better than commercial platinum-based catalysts and most reported TM-H-C ORR catalysts. Impressively, when applied to a primary inc-oxygen (Zn–O2) battery, the synthesized catalyst comprehensively outperforms the state-of-the-art platinum-based catalyst in both its maximum power density and specific capacity. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an important challenge in the development and large-scale distribution of energy conversion devices, especially low-temperature proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. In order to speed up the ORR kinetics and improve fuel cell performance, iron-doped calcium titanate (CTFO) is proposed as a cocatalyst. Fundamental physical and chemical characterizations by means of X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and morphological and thermal analyses for the understanding of the functional features of the proposed materials were carried out. Composite catalysts containing different amounts of CTFO additive with respect to platinum (i.e., Pt:CTFO 1:0.5 and 1:1 wt:wt) were studied using a rotating disk electrode (RDE). Fuel cell tests were performed at 80 °C under 30% and 80% relative humidity. The best Pt:CTFO composite catalyst was compared to a bare Pt/C and a Pt/C:CaTiO3−δ 1:1 catalyst, revealing superior performances of the latter at high relative humidity fuel cell operation, as a combined result of an optimized electrolyte-electrode interface and improved ORR kinetics due to the inorganic additive. Hydrogen fuel cell technology is an essential component of a green economy. However, it is limited in practicality and affordability by the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Nanoscale silver particles have been proposed as a cost-effective solution to this problem. However, previous computational studies focused on clean and flat surfaces. High-index surfaces can be used to model active steps presented in nanoparticles. Here, we used the stable stepped Ag(322) surface as a model to understand the ORR performance of steps on Ag nanoparticles. Our density functional theory (DFT) results demonstrate a small dissociation energy barrier for O2 molecules on the Ag(322) surface, which can be ascribed to the existence of low-coordination number surface atoms. Consequently, the adsorption of OOH* led to the associative pathway becoming ineffective. Alternatively, the unusual dissociative mechanism is energetically favored on Ag(322) for ORR. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells using Pt-based materials as electrocatalysts have achieved a decent performance, represented by the launched Toyota Mirai vehicle. The ideal PEM fuel cells consume stored pure hydrogen and air. However, SO2, as a primary air contaminant, may be fed along with air at the cathode, leading to Pt site deactivation. Therefore, it is important to improve the SO2 tolerance of catalysts for the stability of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, we develop the Pt/C-TiO2 catalyst against SO2 poisoning during ORR. Impressively, the hybrid Pt/C-TiO2 catalyst with 20 mass % TiO2 shows the best ORR and anti-toxic performance: the kinetic current density of ORR is 20.5% higher and the degradation rate after poisoning is 50% lower than Pt/C. The interaction between Pt and TiO2 as well as the abundant hydroxyl groups on the surface of TiO2 are both revealed to account for the accelerated removal of poisonous SO2 on Pt surfaces. Transition metal (TM) single atomic catalysts (MSAC-N-C) derived from doped zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) are considered attractive oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts for fuel cells and metal-air batteries due to their advantages of high specific surface area, more active catalytic sites, adjustable pore size, and coordination topology features. This review provides an updated overview of the latest advances of MSAC-N-C catalysts derived from ZIF-8 precursors in ORR electrocatalysis. Particularly, some key challenges, including coordination environments regulation of catalysis center in MSAC-N-C, the active sites loading optimization and synergistic effects between TM nanoclusters/nanoparticles and the single atoms on MSAC-N-C catalysis activity, as well as their adaptability in various devices, are summarized for improving future development and application of MSAC-N-C catalysts. Opening up electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is essential for practical application in fuel cells and metal-air batteries; however, how to make the catalysts with both good performance and low cost is difficult. Recently, research on the ORR of molybdenum disulfide-based catalysts in alkaline electrolytes has been on the rise. However, the development of MoS2 catalyst for acidic ORR is still in its infancy. Herein, without using reductant and morphology control reagent, we firstly obtained flowerball-like MoS2/Vulcan XC-72R (VC) nanocomposites via hydrothermal method. The designed composite exhibits a nearly 4e− ORR process with 0.78 and 0.92 V onset potentials in 0.1 M KOH and HClO4, respectively. Furthermore, the flowerball-like composite shows utmost electrochemical stability judging by 87 and 80% current retention for about 5.5 h either in alkaline or acid media, long term durability for continuous 10,000 cycles, and stronger resistance to methanol than the commercial Pt/C catalyst. The abundant Mo edges as catalytic active centers of flowerball-like structure, high electron conductivity, and enhanced mass transport in either alkaline or acidic electrolyte are favorable for catalytic performance. Highly-efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have been extensively investigated for the development of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The state-ofthe- art Pt/C catalysts suffer from high price, limited accessibility of Pt, sluggish reaction kinetics, as well as undesirable long-term durability. Engineering ultra-small noble metal clusters with high surface-to-volume ratios and robust stabilities for ORR represents a new avenue. After a simple introduction regarding the significance of ORR and the recent development of noble metal clusters, the general ORR mechanism in both acidic and basic media is firstly discussed. Subsequently, we will summarize the recent efforts employing Pt, Au, Ag, Pd and Ru clusters, as well as the alloyed bi-metallic clusters for acquiring highly efficient catalysts to enhance both the activity and stability of ORR. Molecular noble metal clusters with definitive composition to reveal the relevant ORR mechanism will be particularly highlighted. Finally, the current challenges, the future outlook, as well as the perspectives in this booming field will be proposed, featuring the great opportunities and potentials to engineering noble metal clusters as highly-efficient and durable cathodic catalysts for fuel cell applications. Ag4Bi2O5/MnO2 nano-sized material was synthesized by a co-precipitation method in concentrated KOH solution. The morphology characterization indicates that MnO2 nanoparticles with a size of 20 nm are precipitated on the surface of nano Ag4Bi2O5, forming a structure like corn on the cob. The obtained material with 60% Mn offers slightly higher initial potential (0.098 V vs. Hg/HgO) and limiting current density (-5.67 mA cm-2) at a rotating speed of 1600 rpm compared to commercial Pt/C (-0.047 V and -5.35 mA cm-2, respectively). Furthermore, the obtained material exhibits superior long-term durability and stronger methanol tolerance than commercial Pt/C. In the current work, heteroatom-doped graphene materials containing different atomic ratios of nitrogen and sulphur were employed as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic and alkaline media. To this end, the hydrothermal route and different chemical reducing agents were employed to synthesize the catalytic materials. The physicochemical characterization of the catalysts was performed by several techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and elemental analysis; meanwhile, the electrochemical performance of the materials toward the ORR was analyzed by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), rotating disk electrode (RDE) and rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) techniques. The main results indicate that the ORR using heteroatom-doped graphene is a direct four-electron pathway, for which the catalytic activity is higher in alkaline than in acidic media. Indeed, a change of the reaction mechanism was observed with the insertion of N into the graphenic network, by the rate determining step changes from the first electrochemical step (formation of adsorbed OOH) on glassy carbon to the removal of adsorbed O (Oad) from the N-graphene surface. Moreover, the addition of sulphur atoms into the N-graphene structure increases the catalytic activity toward the ORR, as the desorption of Oad is accelerated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon graphitic structures that differ in morphology, graphiticity and specific surface area were used as support for platinum for Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) in low temperature fuel cells. Graphitic supports were first non-covalently functionalized with pyrene carboxylic acid (PCA) and, subsequently, platinum nanoparticles were nucleated on the surface following procedures found in previous studies. Non-covalent functionalization has been proven to be advantageous because it allows for a better control of particle size and monodispersity, it prevents particle agglomeration since particles are bonded to the surface, and it does not affect the chemical and physical resistance of the support. It is of increasing interest and an important challenge to develop highly efficient less-expensive cathode catalysts for anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). In this work, we have directly prepared a carbon-supported CoS nanocatalyst in a solvothermal route and investigated the effect of heat-treatment on electrocatalytic activity and long-term stability using rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE). The results show that the heat-treatment below 400 °C under nitrogen atmosphere significantly enhanced the electrocatalytic performance of CoS catalyst as a function of annealed temperature in terms of the cathodic current density, the half-wave potential, the HO2- product and the number of electrons transferred. The CoS catalyst that annealed at 400 °C (CoS-400) has exhibited a promising performance with the half-wave potential of 0.71 V vs. RHE (the highest one for non-precious metal chalcogenides), the minimum HO2- product of 4.3% at 0.60 V vs. RHE and close to the 4-electron pathway during the oxygen reduction reaction in 0.1 M KOH. The carbon supported iron selenide catalysts (FeSe2/C) were prepared with various selenium to iron ratios (Se/Fe), namely, Se/Fe = 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0, through facile microwave route by using ferrous oxalate (FeC2O4⋅2H2O) and selenium dioxide (SeO2) as precursors. Accordingly, effects of Se/Fe ratio on the crystal structure, crystallite size, microstructure, surface composition and electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of FeSe2/C in an alkaline medium were systematically investigated. The results revealed that all the FeSe2/C catalysts obtained with the Se/Fe ratios of 2.0-4.0 exhibited almost pure orthogonal FeSe2 structure with the estimated mean crystallite sizes of 32.9-36.2 nm. The electrocatalytic activities in potassium hydroxide solutions were higher than those in perchloric acid solutions, and two peak potentials or two plateaus responded to ORR were observed from cyclic voltammograms and polarization curves, respectively. The ORR potentials of 0.781-0.814 V with the electron transfer numbers of 3.3-3.9 at 0.3 V could be achieved as the Se/Fe ratios varied from 2.0 to 4.0. The Fe and Se were presented at the surface of FeSe2/C upon further reduction on FeSe2. The Se/Fe ratios slightly influenced the degree of graphitization in carbon support and the amount of active sites for ORR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to reduce the overall system cost, the development of inexpensive, high-performance and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)N, Fe-codoped carbon-based (Fe/N/C) electrocatalysts to replace currently used Pt-based catalysts has become one of the major topics in research on fuel cells. This review paper lays the emphasis on introducing the progress made over the recent five years with a detailed discussion of recent work in the area of Fe/N/C electrocatalysts for ORR and the possible Fe-based active sites. Fe-based materials prepared by simple pyrolysis of transition metal salt, carbon support, and nitrogen-rich small molecule or polymeric compound are mainly reviewed due to their low cost, high performance, long stability and because they are the most promising for replacing currently used Pt-based catalysts in the progress of fuel cell commercialization. Additionally, Fe-base catalysts with small amount of Fe or new structure of Fe/Fe3C encased in carbon layers are presented to analyze the effect of loading and existence form of Fe on the ORR catalytic activity in Fe-base catalyst. The proposed catalytically Fe-centered active sites and reaction mechanisms from various authors are also discussed in detail, which may be useful for the rational design of high-performance, inexpensive, and practical Fe-base ORR catalysts in future development of fuel cells. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the oldest studied and most challenging of the electrochemical reactions. Due to its sluggish kinetics, ORR became the major contemporary technological hurdle for electrochemists, as it hampers the commercialization of fuel cell (FC) technologies. Downsizing the metal particles to nanoscale introduces unexpected fundamental modifications compared to the corresponding bulk state. To address these fundamental issues, various synthetic routes have been developed in order to provide more versatile carbon-supported low platinum catalysts. Consequently, the approach of using nanocatalysts may overcome the drawbacks encountered in massive materials for energy conversion. This review paper aims at summarizing the recent important advances in carbon-supported metal nanoparticles preparation from colloidal methods (microemulsion, polyol, impregnation, Bromide Anion Exchange...) as cathode material in low temperature FCs. Special attention is devoted to the correlation of the structure of the nanoparticles and their catalytic properties. The influence of the synthesis method on the electrochemical properties of the resulting catalysts is also discussed. Emphasis on analyzing data from theoretical models to address the intrinsic and specific electrocatalytic properties, depending on the synthetic method, is incorporated throughout. The synthesis process-nanomaterials structure-catalytic activity relationships highlighted herein, provide ample new rational, convenient and straightforward strategies and guidelines toward more effective nanomaterials design for energy conversion. The high activity of non-platinum electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media is necessary for applications in energy conversion devices such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, we present the electrocatalytic activity of TaOx/carbon black (CB) nanoparticles for the ORR in an alkaline atmosphere as well as in an acidic electrolyte. Ultrafine TaOx nanoparticles 1–2 nm in size and uniformly dispersed on CB supports were prepared by potentiostatic electrodeposition in a nonaqueous electrolyte and subsequent annealing treatment in an H2 flow. The TaOx/CB nanoparticles largely catalyzed the ORR with an onset potential of 1.03 VRHE in an O2-saturated 0.1 M KOH solution comparable to that of a commercial Pt/CB catalyst. ORR activity was also observed in 0.1 M H2SO4 solution. According to the rotating ring disk electrode measurement results, the oxide nanoparticles partly produced H2O2 during the ORR in 0.1 M KOH, and the ORR process was dominated by both the two- and four-electron reductions of oxygen in a diffusion-limited potential region. The Tafel slope of −120 mV dec−1 in low and high current densities revealed the surface stability of the oxide nanoparticles during the ORR. Therefore, these results demonstrated that the TaOx/CB nanoparticles were electroactive for the ORR in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goal of this research was to synthesize activated nitrogen-doped nanocarbons with high specific surface area and adjustable pore size distribution using wood charcoal as a raw material. The resulting carbon materials were tested for possible application as oxygen reduction reaction catalysts in alkaline media. Activated carbons were obtained using a thermochemical activation method with NaOH. Nitrogen was introduced into activated carbons using dicyandiamide solution. It was demonstrated that the content of introduced nitrogen depends on oxygen content in the structure of the activated carbon. The oxygen reduction reaction activity of the activated and nitrogen-doped carbon material was comparable with a commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst. Electrocatalytic properties of the synthesized N-doped wood-derived carbon catalysts may be associated with the highly developed surface area, specific ratio of micro- and mesopores, as well as the high percentage of pyridinic nitrogen. To explore high-performing alternatives to platinum-based catalysts is highly desirable for lowering costs and thus promoting fuel cell commercialization. Herein, self-supported Fe-N-C materials were prepared by the pyrolysis of dual precursors including EDTA ferric sodium (EDTAFeNa) and melamine (MA), followed by acid-leaching and final annealing. Towards an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in 0.1 M KOH, the as-prepared MA/EDTAFeNa-HT2 delivered onset (Eonset) and half-wave (E1/2) potentials of 0.97 and 0.84 V vs. RHE, respectively, identical with that of a state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst, accompanied with predominantly a four-electron pathway. The introduction of MA and extension of acid-leaching promoted a positive shift of 50 mV for E1/2 relative to that of only the EDTAFeNa-derived counterpart. It was revealed that the enhancement of ORR activity is attributed to a decrease in magnetic Fe species and increase in pyridinic/quanternary nitrogen content whilst nearly excluding effects of the graphitization degree, variety of crystalline iron species, and mesoscopic structure. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a key process for the operation of fuel cells. To accelerate the sluggish kinetics of ORR, a wide range of catalysts have been proposed and tested. In this work, a nano-dispersed copper-impregnated platinum catalyst prepared by electrodeposition of platinum on a poly[Cu(Salen)] template followed by polymer destruction is described. In addition to the high activity of the thus prepared catalyst in the oxygen reduction reaction surpassing that of both polycrystalline platinum catalyst and the commercial carbon-platinum catalyst ("E-TEK"), it showed remarkable tolerance to the presence of methanol in solution. Large quantities of marine algae are annually produced, and have been disposed or burned as solid waste. In this work, porous carbons were prepared from three kinds of marine algae (Enteromorpha, Laminaria, and Chlorella) by a two-step activation process. The as-prepared carbon materials were doped with cobalt (Co) and applied as catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Our results demonstrated that Co-doped porous carbon prepared from Enteromorpha sp. (denoted by Co-PKEC) displayed excellent catalytic performance for ORR. Co-PKEC obtained a half-wave potential of 0.810 V (vs. RHE) and a maximum current density of 4.41 mA/cm2, which was comparable to the commercial 10% Pt/C catalyst (E1/2 = 0.815 V, Jd = 4.40 mA/cm2). In addition, Co-PKEC had excellent long-term stability and methanol resistance. The catalytic ability of Co-PKEC was evaluated in a one-chamber glucose fuel cell. The maximum power density of the fuel cell equipped with the Co-PKEC cathode was 33.53 W/m2 under ambient conditions, which was higher than that of the fuel cell with a 10% Pt/C cathode. This study not only demonstrated an easy-to-implement approach to prepare robust electrochemical catalyst from marine algal biomass, but also provided an innovative strategy for simultaneous waste remediation and value-added material production. A core-shell type of Fe3O4/NCS-Mn composite was prepared by pyrolyzing a precursor fabricated by coating a chitosan-Schiff base Mn complex on Fe3O4 cores. For comparison purposes, the Fe3O4@NCS sample in the absence of Mn and the Fe3O4@NC sample derived from just chitosan coating Fe3O4 were also prepared. Among the three catalysts, Fe3O4@NCS-Mn demonstrates the best electrocatalytic activity compared to commercial Pt/C (20%) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The average of the transferred electron number (n) approached 3.6 in the range of −0.3 to −0.8 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). In fuel-cell technology development, one of the most important objectives is to minimize the amount of Pt, the most employed material as an oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation electro-catalyst. In this paper, we report the synthesis and characterization of Te nanotubes (TeNTs) decorated with Pt nanoparticles, readily prepared from stirred aqueous solutions of PtCl2 containing a suspension of TeNTs, and ethanol acting as a reducing agent, avoiding the use of any hydrophobic surfactants such as capping stabilizing substance. The obtained TeNTs decorated with Pt nanoparticles (TeNTs/PtNPs) have been fully characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area diffraction patterns (SAD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). We demonstrated that the new material can be successfully employed in fuel cells, either as an anodic (for methanol oxidation reaction) or a cathodic (for oxygen reduction reaction) electrode, with high efficiency in terms of related mass activities and on-set improvement. Remarkably, the cell operates in aqueous electrolyte buffered at pH 7.0, thus, avoiding acidic or alkaline conditions that might lead to, for example, Pt dissolution (at low pH), and paving the way for the development of biocompatible devices and on-chip fuel cells. Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are emerging technologies for the electrochemical conversion of the chemical energy of a fuel (methanol) directly into electrical energy, with a low environmental impact and high efficiency. Yet, before this technology can reach a large-scale diffusion, specific issues must be solved, in particular, the high cost of the cell components. In a direct methanol fuel cell system, high capital costs are mainly derived from the use of noble metal catalysts; therefore, the development of low-cost electro-catalysts, satisfying the target requirements of high performance and durability, represents an important challenge. The research is currently addressed to the development of metal–nitrogen–carbon (M–N–C) materials as cheap and sustainable catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in an acid environment, for application in polymer electrolyte fuel cells fueled by hydrogen or alcohol. In particular, this mini-review summarizes the recent advancements achieved in DMFCs using M–N–C catalysts. The presented analysis is restricted to M–N–C catalysts mounted at the cathode of a DMFC or investigated in rotating disk electrode (RDE) configuration for the ORR in the presence of methanol in order to study alcohol tolerance. Electrocatalysis for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode plays a critical role in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. However, the high-cost and sluggish kinetics of the catalytic reaction have hindered its development. Therefore, developing efficient catalysts to address these issues is of vital significance. In this work, we summarized the recent progress of nitrogen (N)-doped metal-free catalysts for the ORR, owing to their high catalytic activity (comparable to Pt/C) and cost-effectiveness. The synthetic strategy and the morphology structure to catalytic performance are mainly discussed. Furthermore, the design of N-doped nanomaterials with other heteroatoms in aiming to further enhance the ORR performance is also reviewed. At the end of the review, we provide a brief summary of the N-doped carbon-based catalysts in enhancing the ORR performance and give future perspectives for their further development.
