The objectives of this study were to prepare a high-purity hydroxylammonium nitrate (HAN) solution and evaluate the performance of various types of metal oxide/honeycomb catalysts during the catalytic decomposition of the HAN solution. Hydroxylammonium nitrate was prepared via a neutralization reaction of hydroxylamine and nitric acid. FT-IR was used to analyze the chemical composition, chemical structure, and functional groups of the HAN. The aqueous HAN solution obtained from pH 7.06 showed the highest concentration of HAN of 60% and a density of 1.39 g/mL. The concentration of HAN solution that could be obtained when the solvent was evaporated to the maximum level could not exceed 80%. In this study, catalysts were prepared using a honeycomb structure made of cordierite (5SiO2-2MgO-2Al2O3) as a support, with Mn, Co, Cu, Pt, or Ir impregnated as active metals. The pore structure of the metal oxide/honeycomb catalysts did not significantly depend on the type of metal loaded. The Cu/honeycomb catalyst showed the strongest effect of lowering the decomposition onset temperature in the decomposition of the HAN solution likely due to the intrinsic activity of the Cu metal being superior to that of the other metals. It was confirmed that the effect of the catalyst on the decomposition mechanism of the aqueous HAN solution was negligible. Through a repetitive cycle of HAN decomposition, it was confirmed that the Cu/honeycomb catalyst could be recovered and reused as a catalyst for the decomposition of an aqueous HAN solution.

This paper reports the improved efficiency of 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a) decomposition by combined use of MgO with γ-Al2O3. While a high temperature (>900 °C) was required to achieve 90% conversion during non-catalytic pyrolysis of HFC-134a, 100% conversion of HFC-134a was achieved at 600 °C by the use of γ-Al2O3. Among the three catalysts (γ-Al2O3, MgO, and CaO) tested in this study, γ-Al2O3 showed the highest HFC-134a decomposition efficiency, followed by MgO and CaO, due to its large surface area and large amount of weak acid sites. Also with the longest lifetime among the catalysts, durability in maintaining complete decomposition of HFC-134a was shown in γ-Al2O3. The addition of MgO to γ-Al2O3 was effective in extending the lifetime of γ-Al2O3 due to the efficient interaction between HF and MgO, which can delay the deactivation of γ-Al2O3. Compared to the double bed γ-Al2O3-MgO configuration, the use of a mixed γ-Al2O3-MgO bed extended the catalyst lifetime more effectively.

Platinum catalysts loaded on a hybrid support, composed of HZSM-48 and pseudoboehmite, were applied to the synthesis of benzene through methylcyclopentane (MCP) reforming in order to investigate the effect of the addition of pseudoboehmite to Pt/HZSM-48 for ring-enlargement reaction. A total of 0.5 wt% of platinum was impregnated on the hybrid support by using the incipient wetness method. Catalyst characterization was performed with nitrogen sorption, X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed desorption of NH3, and infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine. It was found that mesoporous structures were well-developed in Pt/(HZSM-48 + pseudoboehmite) catalyst as a result of the pseudoboehmite addition, of which the average pore size was in the range of 7−8 nm. The presence of pseudoboehmite in the catalyst increases the total amount of acid sites and weakens the acid strength, compared with those of the Pt/HZSM-48 catalyst. Lewis acid sites were more abundant than Brönsted acid sites over the Pt/(HZSM-48+pseudoboehmite) catalysts. It was found that selectivity to the ring-enlargement reaction is dominant over selectivity to the ring-opening reaction over the Pt/(HZSM-48 + pseudoboehmite) catalysts. The benzene yield over Pt/(HZSM-48 + pseudoboehmite, 1:1) catalyst reached 65.1% at 450 °C and 0.3 h−1. As well as being influenced by the mesoporous structure, the higher activity and selectivity in MCP reforming was also determined by appropriate acidity of the Pt/(HZSM-48 + pseudoboehmite) catalysts.

This study is aimed at preparing C8–C16 alkene through oligomerization of a butene mixture using nickel oxide supported on mesoporous aluminosilicate. Mesoporous aluminosilicate with an ordered structure was successfully synthesized from HZSM-5 zeolite by combining a top-down and a bottom-up method. MMZZSM-5 catalyst showed much higher butene conversion and C8–C16 yield in the butene oligomerization reaction than those with HZSM-5. This is attributed to the pore geometry of MMZZSM-5, which is more beneficial for internal diffusion of reactants, reaction intermediates, and products. The ordered channel-like mesopores were maintained after the nickel-loading on MMZZSM-5. The yield for C8–C16 hydrocarbons over NiO/MMZZSM-5 was higher than that of MMZZSM-5 catalyst, which seemed to be due to higher acid strength from a higher ratio of Lewis acid to Brønsted acid. The present study reveals that a mesoporous NiO/MMZZSM-5 catalyst with a large amount of Lewis acid sites is one of the potential catalysts for efficient generation of aviation fuel through the butene oligomerization.
