The roadways comprised in the network of Valencia Provincial Council have traditionally been heavily used by sports cyclists, both amateur enthusiasts and federated groups, owing to their typology, low traffic density and the good climate of Valencia province. In recent years we have detected an increase in the flow of cyclists on these roads and consequently in mobility, this occasionally entailing an increase in the accident rate involving bicycles. Valencia Provincial Council, as the manager of a road network, has reassessed solutions for improving road safety on its network, taking into account that motor traffic and cycling traffic are sharing the same road platform. This article shows the results o f an in-depth study of the cycling accident rate on the Provincial Council’s network, comparing it with the situation on Spanish roadways. We also describe all the actions already undertaken in regard to sports cyclists and the new proposals about to be implemented on the roads of Valencia Provincial Council, seeking as a matter of priority to guarantee the safety of roadways where they share the road with motor vehicle traffic. In recent years, driver assistance systems have been consolidated in the market, offering undeniable assistance in safety and comfort when driving. They face complex situations, increasing the level of assistance and acting independently. Automation will change the future of mobility, as autonomous driving synchronizes the flow of traffic, saving time and consumption, and reducing pollutant emissions. With the increase on the level of automation, the car takes over certain driving tasks and the driver becomes a passenger. This reduces the stress of the driver and allows him to use the time in the vehicle in a more productive way. More than 90 percent of the road accidents are the result of human errors. It has taken decades to have regard for human factor in the field of road safety. Still remains pending attend to subject's individual differences. There's no discussion of the fact that the population is aging. Rising life expectancy coupled with falling birth rate has led to a fast population aging. As we progressively adapt different environments to aging population, road environment and design cannot be relegated. In this article we discuss some reflections on the importance o f this adaptation. Main needs and abilities of older which are differential to the rest of the general population are also discussed. The Government of Spain should be driving the implementation of policies that prioritize economic growth, to create employment and promote social cohesion across the entire country. In this context, selective investment in improving accessibility of Spanish municipalities from local highways would be a programme meeting the maximum number of required conditions: • Local highways are a basic element of social policy. • Local highways still continue to present the highest accident rates. • Investment in local highways generates a fiscal return to the State in excess of 50%.
