Seventeen species of Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, and Hymenoptera showed chemical differences by the method of paper chromatography in an evaluation of the method for taxonomic purposes. The analyses were complicated by pattern differences evident in larval, pupal, and adult stages of some species. Geographic isolates of Malacosoma disstria Hbn. as well as of Chamaepsila rosae (F.) and physiological entities within Pristiphora erichsonii (Htg.) show identical patterns; however, differences are found at specific levels. Paper chromatography is therefore a valuable taxonomic tool, especially as the technique is capable of considerable refinement.

We evaluated the quality of information about taxonomic identifications in 710 papers published in seven zoological journals in 2017. We found that only 10.7% of papers cited identification methods, 29.2% made available specimen-level material for later verification, and 6.9% indicated taxon concepts applied to studied animals. Only 4.0% provided details about all three practices, while almost two-thirds provided none. Invertebrate papers were more likely than vertebrate papers to provide identification methods and deposit vouchers, but taxon concepts were rarely provided, and none of the three practices were common in any category. In short, our data suggest that most zoological research is irreplicable. To address this problem, journals should require submitted manuscripts to meet the following guidelines: (1) methods used to identify studied taxa must be stated; (2) literature supporting these identifications must be cited; (3) taxon concept(s) applied to species-level taxa must be indicated; (4) specimen-level material should be available for later examination. We argue that research which falls short of these guidelines is not replicable. We provide recommendations for how authors can better document how studied animals are identified and permit others to verify their identifications, which is necessary for transparent, replicable, and ultimately scientific zoological research.

The centipedes of Canada and Alaska are poorly known. This paper indicates the present state of knowledge of the class, including "economic" and "biological" aspects, insofar as this is relevant to Canada and the adjacent United States of America. The systematic and other related literature applicable to the region is briefly reviewed. The principal part of the paper provides a classified list of the species of centipedes (with most of their synonyms) hitherto known for Canada and Alaska. In order to alert workers as to possible future additions to the Canadian fauna, those species known from other adjacent United States, southern New England, and Oregon are added. The known distribution of each species is given by province, territory, or state within the region, but known distributions further afield are not generally indicated. About 70 species (over a dozen of them introduced) are known for Canada and Alaska. Some 70 or so are found in the adjacent United States or southern New England. It is estimated that the Canadian–Alaskan fauna may eventually prove to comprise more than 100 species of Chilopoda. A note on Canadian Symphyla (including the record of a member of a hitherto unreported family) is appended.

This paper complements a similar one in this issue for the Centipedes (Chilopoda) and Symphyla. The diplopod fauna of Canada, as currently known, is briefly discussed and the relevant literature is summarized. The main body of the paper comprises a classified checklist of species, with their recorded distribution, known to occur in Canada and the adjacent United States of America, together with a few others from a little farther south that might conceivably be anticipated. Over 60 species are listed for Canada and Alaska, together with about the same number of additional species hitherto known only as far north as those states immediately south of the international boundary. The European Archiboreoiulus pallidus (Brade-Birks) is recorded for the first time from North America.

This paper reports on an intimate association of a cnidarian with glass sponges. Hexactinellid sponges of the genus Heterochone were found to regularly contain numerous tiny hydroids in their tissue. The hydroid belongs to a new genus and species and is here named Brinckmannia hexactinellidophila. Brinckmannia hexactinellidophila is a reduced form, lacking tentacles and gonophores, which certainly is an adaptation to its endobiotic mode of life. The possession of desmonemes allows it to be classified as a member of the suborder Filifera of the order Anthoathecata. The shape of the hydranth reveals some clear affinities with the Proboscidactylidae, a relationship which is also strongly suggested by a comparison of 16S gene sequences. Because a closer relationship to some other families cannot be excluded at this stage, the new genus is nevertheless not assigned to any known family and classified as Filifera incertae sedis.

The last comprehensive reviews of ecology and natural history of ascidians were included in the excellent 1971 publication by Millar on the biology of ascidians and the 1991 treatise on New Caledonia ascidians by Monniot, Monniot, and Laboute. Several hundred papers have been published since that time, greatly expanding our knowledge of environmental tolerances and responses to increasing levels of anthropogenically derived toxins in marine waters, energetics and feeding strategies, predator–prey relationships, competition both intra- and inter-specific that include many studies of self–nonself recognition in colonial species, modes and environmental regulation of reproduction and development, symbionts, natural-product chemistry as antifouling and antipredator defenses, and dispersal mechanisms. The relatively new field of molecular genetics is revealing the presence of cryptic species and is helping to determine the origin of anthropogenically transported individuals, an important and growing problem that affects natural ecological relationships in marine communities worldwide. We are learning more about the difficult-to-study abyssal and Antarctic species. There have been great advances in our understanding of the importance in open-ocean food webs of the planktonic Appendicularia and Thaliacea. Also included in this review is a brief discussion of recent work on the Cephalochordata and Hemichordata.

In ecomorphological relationships, ecological similarities or overlap between species may occur with morphological similarity or overlap. Determination of morphological distinctness is thus important when relating morphology with ecology. This is the first of a series of papers investigating the ecomorphology of Microchiroptera in southeast Queensland, Australia, and in it I describe means and ranges of measurements and distinctness of wing morphology. In 21 species from this region, species means for aspect ratio (relative wing width) ranged from 4.98 to 8.25, while wing loading (mass by wing area) ranged from 4.32 to 15.9 N/m2. For these variables, each species' range (minimum–maximum) overlaps that of at least one other species, with greater overlap at lower values. Morphological overlap was frequent, owing to a consistently wide range of wing dimensions within species, with greater overlap at low aspect ratios and wing loadings where species were more closely packed. For all variables, the variance arising from the method of measurement (wing extend and trace) was less than intraspecific variance, but in many cases was similar to interspecific overlap. A proportion of the range and overlap in wing-morphology variables is attributable to measurement variance. The variance in aspect ratio was lower than in wing loading at species, genus, family, and region levels. Phylogenetic constraint on aspect ratio appears to be greater than on wing loading, particularly at the family level. At family and genus levels, aspect ratio varied less than wing loading. No overlap in aspect ratio occurred at family level. I group species into morphologically distinct units and provide predictions of the flight behaviour of these.

Cestodes from four badgers (Meles meles) and eight raccoons (Procyon lotor) were studied. The badgers and seven of the raccoons were taken from the wild near the city of Berlin, Germany. This paper is the first record of Atriotaenia incisa (Railliet, 1899) (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) from P. lotor in Europe. Atriotaenia incisa is redescribed and compared with morphological descriptions of the North American species Atriotaenia procyonis (Chandler, 1942), a common parasite of the raccoon in Canada and the United States. No morphological differences were found between the two species and it is suggested that they may be conspecific.

Eighteen species of cockroaches are reported to occur on the Galápagos Islands. Five species are endemic and in this paper three of these are described as new species: Chorisoneura cristobalensis Roth, C. carpenteri Roth, and Ischnoptera santacruzensis Roth. Endemic Ischnoptera snodgrasii (McNeill) COMB.NOV. is transferred from Anisopygia, and redescribed. Previous reports of the introduced species Periplaneta brunnea, Nauphoeta cinerea, and Phoetalia pallida could not be confirmed. These species may not have become established or may have become extinct. New records of native or introduced species are given for Holocompsa nitidula, Holocompsa sp., Anaplecta lateralis, Blaberus parabolicus, and Rhyparobia maderae. Of the introduced species, only Periplaneta australasiae, Symploce pallens, and Pycnoscelus surinamensis seem to have invaded native (undisturbed) habitats. The endemic species are partially or wholly flightless. This may not be a result of island life per se, but may be a specialization for life in more homogeneous litter or cave habitats at higher elevations on the islands.

A new species of Labeo (Cuvier, 1817) is defined and described from the Upper Niger River and Upper Senegal (Baoulé) River basins. Although it is diagnosed as a new species, there is some overlap with two other sympatric species, L. coubie and L. senegalensis, in identifying characters. This overlap is sufficient to introduce the alternative possibility that the putative new species is a hybrid. Three separate techniques were used to test the two competing hypotheses: morphological/morphometric analysis, chromosomal/enzymological analysis, and comparative parasitology. These complementary studies were carried out simultaneously but essentially independently, to minimize any scientific bias during the investigation. It was established that the three species can be distinguished by a combination of mouth morphology and meristics (notably gill raker counts). Though all three have the same chromosome number (2N = 50), the new species can be identified allelically by four homozygous loci that are not present in L. coubie and L. senegalensis. This genetic result indicates that the new species is sexually isolated from the other two. Also, calculations of Nei's genetic distance produce an index which is shorter between L. coubie and L. senegalensis than between either of these two and the prospective new species. All three species can be further separated by their specific monogenean gill-parasite complement: L. coubie (five Dogielius spp., seven Dactylogyrus spp.); L. senegalensis (two Dogielius spp., five Dactylogyrus spp.); Labeo roseopunctatus n.sp (1 Dogielius sp., one Dactylogyrus sp.). As a result of these investigations, the idea of hybridism is rejected and a formal taxonomic description of Labeo roseopunctatus n.sp. is included in this paper.

This paper is the fourth in a series treating the Simuliidae of Sri Lanka and describes the larval, pupal, and adult stages of a new species, Simulium (Byssodon)languidum. Taxonomic comparisons are made with other members of the subgenus.

This is the third paper in a series treating the Simuliidae of Sri Lanka; in it are described all stages of a new species of Simulium Latreille belonging to the subgenus Morops Enderlein, Simulium (Morops) trirugosum sp. nov. This is the first species of Morops found in Sri Lanka. Taxonomic comparisons are made with other Oriental species of the subgenus.

E. A. Birge, in his Ph.D. dissertation (1878. Harvard University, Cambridge, MA) and in his first published paper (E. A. Birge. 1879. Trans. Wis. Acad. Sci. Arts. Lett. 4: 77–109), described a species of Pleuroxus from North America and named it P. straminius, then later (E. A. Birge. 1893. Trans. Wis. Acad. Sci. Arts. Lett. 9: 275–317) decided the organism was the same as P. laevis of Scandinavia and hence gave it that name, or rather the invalid, newer name P. hastatus. Detailed study of these two taxa has shown that they are completely different from each other in size, shape, surface ornamentation, nature and color of the carapace, structure of the posterior-ventral corner of the shell, shape and denticulation of the postabdomen, and especially armament of the male postabdomen, that of P. straminius having essentially the same denticulation as the female, whereas in P. laevis all of the marginal denticles are replaced by oblique short rows of spines. Perhaps more significant is the occurrence of a second species in North America, Pleuroxus chiangi n.sp., which is much more closely related to P. laevis than is P. straminius. It differs somewhat vaguely in the relative size of various parts, but it also differs in a number of specific characters, all of which demonstrate that it is a valid separate species. Thus, the posterior-ventral angle of the shell is rounded, with the shell tooth some distance anterior and with several setae immediately posterior being long and projecting well beyond the margin; the postanal portion of the postabdomen is shorter and has about two fewer denticles; and, most important, the male postabdomen retains the two large distalmost denticles and has the oblique rows of setae substituting for the others. Pleuroxus straminius is widely distributed in glaciated North America from Newfoundland to northern Wisconsin and Minnesota, then south along the Atlantic Coast into northern Florida. One suspects that because of species differences already demonstrated between northern and southern populations of Eurycercus and of Pleuroxus denticulatus, P. straminius might also be so differentiated. However, no decision can be made without having males and ephippial females from the southern populations. Pleuroxus chiangi presently seems much less frequent and less abundant than P. straminius. It occurs from Nova Scotia westward to British Columbia, including northern Wisconsin and possibly northern Minnesota, and northward into the Northwest Territories. It seems similar to a number of species, such as Alonopsis americana and Chydorus canadensis, whose distributions barely reach the United States at all but which are well distributed northward in eastern Canada. We need many more data on the occurrence of various taxa in the north. Thus, here is still another example of noncosmopolitanism in the chydorids. The presence of closely related species in North America and Europe might have derived vicariously from the splitting of North America from Europe as the Atlantic Ocean developed. The other species, P. straminius, does not seem to have any counterpart in Europe, although possibly P. sinkiangensis of China is related to it. This and other taxa presently called P. laevis must be studied to work out the degrees of relationship and to develop ideas as to when and how the species evolved. Neotypes have been selected for P. laevis and for P. straminius. These and diverse samples of all three taxa have been deposited in major museums in North America and Europe.

This paper on the Simuliidae of Sri Lanka provides notes on Simulium (Eusimulium) aureohirtum and describes three new species of Simulium (Gomphostilbia): Simulium krombeini, Simulium ela, and Simulium dola. The females of S. (G.) pattoni and Simulium (Gomphostilbia) ceylonicum comb.n. are redescribed and the males, pupae, and larvae are described for the first time. Keys are provided for separating the subgenera of Simulium and the species of Gomphostilbia in Sri Lanka. Some taxonomic comparisons are made with related Oriental species and a few biological notes are given.

Lasioseius berlesei (Oudemans), Lasioseius youcefi Athias-Henriot, Lasioseius kinikinik n.sp., and Lasioseius confusus Evans were collected from grassland soils in Colorado. Lasioseius berlesei and L. youcefi are known only from the female, and for the first time in an ascid mite, we experimentally demonstrate that they reproduce by thelytokous parthenogenesis. Both species are omnivores that will feed on fungi and animal prey, and they share a multidenticulate ridge apposed to a groove on the paraxial faces of the chelicerae which appears to function as a mashing and filtering mechanism during mycophagy. Similar cheliceral structures are lacking in L. kinikinik n.sp. (described in this paper), a bisexual species that must mate to produce eggs, and does not feed on fungi. Diagnoses are presented for L. berlesei, L. youcefi, and L. confusus, and their sperm reception structures (spermatheca, etc.) are illustrated for the first time. Based on the study of type specimens, new morphological evidence, and rearings, we propose that (i) the previous synonymy of L. confusus with L. berlesei be rejected; (ii) Lasioseius mcgregori Chant, 1963 is a junior synonym of L. youcefi Athias-Henriot, 1959; (iii) L. scapulatus Kennett, 1958 is a junior synonym of L. dentatus (Fox, 1946); and (iv) L. furcisetus Athias-Henriot, 1959 is the correct name for L. penicilliger sensu Evans, 1958 and subsequent authors, not Berlese, 1916; L. lanciolatus Chant, 1963 is a junior synonym of L. furcisetus.

The paper discusses morphological criteria by which species of the genus Acanthochondria Oakley, 1930 (Copepoda: Poecilostomatoida) can be conveniently identified. It contains redescription of Acanthochondria rectangularis (Fraser, 1920) and descriptions of three new species of Acanthochondria: A. margolisi, A. dojirii, and A. vancouverensis, all from marine fishes of British Columbia, Canada. It proposes relegation of A. holocephalarum Kabata, 1968 to synonymy with A. epachthes (Wilson, 1908). Chondracanthus deltoideus Fraser, 1920 is redescribed and its affiliation to the genus Chondracanthus de la Roche, 1811 is defended.

The present paper concerns digeneans of the subfamilies Odhneriellinae Yamaguti, 1958 and Orthosplanchninae Yamaguti, 1958, family Campulidae Odhner, 1926, and is based mainly on specimens collected since 1949 from marine mammals from seas bordering Alaska. Odhneriella rossica Skriabin, 1915, type species of the subfamily Odhneriellinae, is transferred to the genus Orthosplanchnus Odhner, 1905. Odhneriellinae thus becomes a synonym of Orthosplanchninae, which includes three genera: Orthosplanchnus Odhner, 1905 (syn. Odhneriella Skriabin, 1915); Hadwenius Price, 1932 (syn. Leucasiella Krotov and Deliamure, 1952); and Oschmarinella Skriabin, 1947. Seven species are retained in Orthosplanchnus: O. arcticus Odhner, 1905; O. fraterculus Odhner, 1905; Orthosplanchnus rossicus (Skriabin, 1915) n.comb. (syn. Odhneriella rossica Skriabin, 1915); O. pygmaeus Iurakhno, 1967; O. albamarinus Treshchev, 1968; O. oculatus Iurakhno, 1969; and O. antarcticus Kurochkin and Nikol'skii, 1972 (syn. O. weddelli Beverley-Burton, 1972). Orthosplanchnus elongatus Ozaki, 1935 is transferred to the genus Hadwenius, as is Odhneriella subtilus (A. S. Skriabin, 1959); O. sudarikovi Treshchev, 1966, excluded from Orthosplanchnus, is of uncertain generic allocation. Orthosplanchnus rossicus is redescribed, and descriptions are provided for the other species recognized in the genus. Variation in O. arcticus from various hosts is considered; in bearded seals, Erignathus barbatus (Erxleben), clinal variation was apparent in O. arcticus, with body size increasing from north to south.

Sixty-three valid species of freshwater triclads (Platyhelminthes, Turbellaria), representing 16 genera, are listed from North and South America. Comments on nomenclatural problems or changes of taxonomic status are included when necessary. Worldwide distributional data are provided at the generic level, but at the specific level only the Western hemisphere is considered. The taxonomic status of four incompletely described species is also briefly discussed. A bibliography of 84 references directs users of the checklist to the most important recent papers dealing with the taxonomy and distribution of the individual species, and provides a key to the older literature. New records for Canada, involving nine species, are given preliminary mention.

This paper contains a taxonomic survey of nematodes belonging to the predaceous family Mononchidae, collected by Dr. Fields Caveness in western Nigeria during 1959–61. Four genera, new to science, Crassibucca, Hadronchus, Polyonchulus, and Prionchulellus, and 16 new species, Crassibucca penicula, C. macrocauda, C. microdonta, Hadronchus bisexualis, H. monohystera, Iotonchus acuticaudus, I. clarki, I. nigeriensts. I. parabasidontus, I. tarjani, Miconchus pararapax, M. thornei, Mylonchulus curvicaudus, Polyonchulus cobbi, P. megadontus, and Prionchulellus cavenessi are described and illustrated.Several already described species are also included. Iotonchus piracicabae (Lordello) and Mononchus (I.) piracicaboides Carvalho are placed in synonymy of I. trichurus (Cobb). Miconchus dadayi (Micoletzky) in Schneider, 1953 is considered a synonym of Miconchus pararapax n. sp. Miconchus dadayi (Micoletzky, 1914), (=Mononchus macrostoma of Daday, 1910) is regarded as species inquirenda. Mylonchulus hawaiiensis (Cassidy) is removed from synonymy, and Iotonchus similis (Cobb) is designated incertae sedis. Mylonchulus montanus (Thorne) is considered a synonym of Mylonchulus lacustris (Cobb). An illustrated taxonomic key to the 14 genera in the family Mononchidae is presented. Keys to most of the world species in these genera are also included.The value of the tuberculate and non-tuberculate valve as a generic character is discussed.
