A finite set of generators for the isotopy classes of selfhomeomorphisms of closed surfaces was given by Lickorish in three papers [2; 3; 4]. In [5] the group of isotopy classes for a particular, well-known cube with holes was presented. There the structure was “tight” enough to allow the computation of the relators as well as the generators. In this paper we give a finite set of generators for the group of isotopy classes of self-homeomorphisms on the solid double torus, the cube with two handles. Let us remark that the group of isotopy classes for the solid torus is well-known.

The topic of homotopy pull-backs and push-outs has recently been discussed by a number of authors; Boardman and Vogt [5], Bousfield and Kan [6], Fantham [7], Mather [11], and Vogt [16]. Mather develops the theory with an eye to applications and of particular interest is his cube theorem which appears in this paper as Theorem (1.10); the significance of this theorem to applications is shown in [11]. As often occurs in homotopy theory the dual is not true. The purpose of this paper is to examine approximations to the dual in order to obtain new information concerning classical problems of duality.

In an earlier paper [7], we have studied the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of solutions to certain infinite systems of linear differential equations with constant coefficients. In the present paper we are interested in systems of nonlinear equations whose coefficients are not necessarily constants; more specifically, we are concerned with infinite systems of the form

This paper is a direct continuation of the article “Proximal analysis and boundaries of closed sets in Banach space, Part I: Theory”, by the same authors. It is devoted to a detailed analysis of applications of the theory presented in the first part and of its limitations.Theorem 2.1 has important consequences for geometry of Banach spaces. We start the presentation with a discussion of density and existence of R-proper points (Definition 1.3) for closed sets in Banach spaces. Our considerations will be based on the “lim inf” inclusions proven in the first part of our paper.

This paper is concerned with topological spaces whose continuous maps into a given space R are constant, as well as with spaces having this property locally. We call these spaces R-monolithic and locally R-monolithic, respectively.Spaces with such properties have been considered in [1], [5]-[7], [10], [11], [22], [28], [31], where with the exception of [10], the given space R is the set of real-numbers with the usual topology. Obviously, for a countable space, connectedness is equivalent to the property that every continuous real-valued map is constant. Countable connected (locally connected) spaces have been constructed in papers [2]-[4], [8], [9], [11]-[21], [23]-[26], [30].

The purpose of this paper is to study the operator Δ + q. Here Δ is the Laplace–Beltrami operator on a compact Lie group G and q is a matrix coefficient of a representation of G. We are able to calculate the powers of Δ + q acting on the function qku. This is done in Section 2 and the reader is refered there for definitions of the special functions q and u.The interest in the operator Δ + q comes originally from physics and in particular from the Schrödinger equation. This is described in [4]. Here we are restricting ourselves to mathematical questions and shall not consider any applications to physics.In this paper we take the heat equation with potential as(1.1)with , the upper half plane, and initial data f(x, 0) = qk(x)u(x).

The purpose of automata theory is to study and classify those properties of words that may be defined by a finite structure, say a finite automaton or a finite monoid. It seems natural to consider the same problem for infinite words. This amounts to studying the asymptotic behaviour of finite automata. As is well-known, this breaks the equivalence between determinism and non-determinism of finite automata. The study of the infinite behaviour of finite automata is based on a deep theorem due to B-&-uuml;chi and Mc Naughton: the recognizable sets of infinite words are the finite boolean combinations of deterministic ones (i.e. recognized by deterministic automata). The aim of this paper is to build an analogous theorem for two-sided infinite sequences. We define a biinfinite word as the equivalence class under the shift of a two-sided infinite sequence. The recognizable sets of biinfinite words are defined in a natural way and one is led to a two-sided notion of determinism. This notion seems to be new and justifies the consideration of biinfinite words. The main result of this paper is the extension to biinfinite words of the theorem of B-&-uuml;chi and Mc Naughton: the recognizable sets of biinfinite words are the finite boolean combinations of deterministic ones (Theorem 3.1). There exist three available proofs of B-&-uuml;chi-Mc Naughton's theorem. The original one by Mc Naughton [4] is hard to read. The proof given by Eilenberg in his book [2] has been constructed by Sch-&-uuml;tzenberger and Eilenberg from Mc Naughton's proof; it is similar to that of Rabin [5]. Finally, Sch-&-uuml;tzenberger gave a further proof in [6], which makes the argument more direct by using the methods of the theory of finite monoids. The proof of our main result follows closely Sch-&-uuml;tzenberger's method. This method allows to reduce the two-sided case to the one-sided case, although this seems very difficult to obtain directly. In the first section, we briefly recall the theory of the one-sided infinite behaviour of finite automata. In particular, we give Sch-&-uuml;tzenberger's proof of B-&-uuml;chi-Mc Naughton's theorem. The elements of this proof are used in the proof of our main result. In the second section we define the notions of biinfinite word, biautomaton and deterministic biautomaton. The last section contains the proof of our main result.

This paper is a continuation of [5]. As stated there, the problem is to explicitly decompose the space L2 = L2(G(F)\G(A)) into simpler invariant subspaces, and to deal with the associated continuous spectrum in case G is a connected reductive algebraic group defined over a global function field. In that paper the solution was begun by studying Eisenstein series associated to cusp forms on Levi components of parabolic subgroups; these Eisenstein series and the associated intertwining operators were shown to be rational functions satisfying functional equations. To go further it is necessary to consider more general Eisenstein series and intertwining operators, and to show that they have similar properties. Such Eisenstein series arise from the cuspidal ones by a residue taking process, which is detailed in a disguised form suitable for induction in the first part of this paper: the main result is a preliminary form of the spectral decomposition.

In this paper we continue our effort [11], [12], [13], [14] to interpret geometrically the harmonic forms on certain locally symmetric spaces constructed by using the theta correspondence. The point of this paper is to prove an integral formula, Theorem 2.1, which will allow us to generalize the results obtained in the above papers to the finite volume case (the previous papers treated only the compact case). We then apply our integral formula to certain finite volume quotients of symmetric spaces of orthogonal groups. The main result obtained is Theorem 4.2 which is described below. We let (,) denote the bilinear form associated to a quadratic form with integer coefficients of signature (p, q). We assume that the fundamental group Γ ⊂ SO(p, q) of our locally symmetric space is the subgroup of the integral isometries of (,) congruent to the identity matrix modulo some integer N. We assume that N is chosen large enough so that Γ is neat (the multiplicative subgroup of C* generated by the eigenvalues of the elements of Γ has no torsion), Borel [2], 17.1 and that every element in Γ has spinor norm 1, Millson-Raghunathan [15], Proposition 4.1. These conditions are needed to ensure that our cycles Cx (see below) are orientable. The methods we will use apply also to unitary and quaternion unitary locally symmetric spaces, see [13].

In an earlier paper [6] we considered the application of Lagrangian methods to the enumeration of plane rooted trees with given colour partition. We obtained an expression which generalised Tutte’s result [9], and a correspondence, which, when specialised, gives the de Bruijn-van Aardenne Ehrenfest-Smith-Tutte Theorem [1]. A corollary of these results is a one-to-one correspondence [4], between trees and generalised derangements, for which no combinatorial description has yet been found.In this paper we extend these methods to the enumeration of rooted labelled trees to demonstrate how another pair of well-known and apparently unrelated theorems may be obtained as the result of a single enumerative approach. In particular, we show that a generalisation of Good's result [3], also considered by Knuth [7], and the matrix tree theorem [8] have a common origin in a single system of functional equations, and that they correspond to different coefficients in the power series solution.

There are many concepts which arise naturally in a discussion of injectivity in an equational class; for example, weak injective algebras, absolute subretracts, essential extensions, the congruence extension property, and the amalgamation property (see [3; 9; 17; 18]). It has already been demonstrated in several papers, notably [9; 17; 26; 27; 28], that the study of these concepts is greatly enriched by the assumption that the algebras under consideration have distributive congruence lattices. In this work attention is focused on weak injective algebras (Section 2) and the congruence extension property (Section 3). In Section 1 our terminology is introduced, Jonsson's lemma and its immediate corollaries are stated, and a diagramatic interpretation of Jonsson's lemma is given ; this Jonsson Diagram is the basis of all of our proofs. Our aim in Sections 2 and 3 is to reduce considerations of weak injectivity and congruence extension to the subdirectly irreducible algebras. For example, we prove (Theorem 2.2) that if K is a congruence distributive equational class whose subdirectly irreducible members form an axiomatic class, then a subdirectly irreducible member of K is a weak injective in K provided it is a weak injective "within" the class of subdirectly irreducible algebras. This result is then applied to prove (Theorem 2.5) that if K is a congruence-distributive equational class generated by a finite simple algebra A, then the weak injectives in K are precisely the Boolean extensions of A by complete Boolean algebras. The main result of Section 3 (Theorem 3.3) states that if K is a congruence-distributive equational class whose subdirectly irreducible algebras form an axiomatic class, then K satisfies the congruence extension property if and only if the subdirectly irreducible members of K satisfy the congruence extension property. The paper closes with a discussion, in Section 4, of some applications of the results.

The isomorphism problem for modular group algebras of finite p-groups appears to be still far from a solution (see [7] for a survey of the existing results). It is therefore of interest to investigate the problem for special classes of groups.The groups we consider here are the p-groups of maximal class, which were extensively studied by Blackburn [1]. In this paper we solve the modular isomorphism problem for such groups of order not larger than pp+1, having an abelian maximal subgroup, for odd primes p.What we in fact do is to generalize methods used by Passman [5] to solve the isomorphism problem for groups of order p4. In Passman's paper the case of groups of maximal class is actually the most difficult one.

Introduction. Let f be a modulus, ei = (δij) and E = {ei, i = 1, 2, …}. The L(f) spaces were created (to the best of our knowledge) by W. Ruckle in [2] in order to construct an example to answer a question of A. Wilansky. It turned out that these spaces are interesting spaces. For example lp, 0 < p ≦ 1 is an L(f) space with f(x) = xp, and every FK space contains an L(f) space [2]. A natural question is: For which f is L(f) a locally convex space? It is known that L(f) ⊆ l1, for all f modulus (see [2]), and l1 is the smallest locally convex FK space in which E is bounded (see [1]). Thus the question becomes: For which f does L(f) equal l1? In this paper we characterize such f. (An FK space need not be locally convex here.) We also characterize those f for which L(f) contains a convex ball. The final result of this paper is to show that if f satisfies f(x · y) ≦ f(x) · f(y) and L(f) ≠ l1 then L(f) contains no infinite dimensional subspace isomorphic to a Banach space.

A dissectible polyhedron is a natural extension of a concept whose history dates back to at least 1758 and Euler [7]—the concept of a dissection of a polygon. An interesting historical survey of dissections of a polygon is given by Brown [4]. Some approaches to the classical problem have been given by Moon and Moser [9] and by Guy [8] ; the latter provides an approach which is the basis of the work in this paper. A summary of enumeration results on dissections of polygons and polyhedra by automorphism groups has been given by the authors [2].Recent extensions of the problem have been investigated in a series of papers by Brown and Tutte [3; 5; 14; 15] and b y Takeo [10; 11; 12; 13].

Throughout this paper, R will be a commutative integral domain with identity and x an indeterminate. If ƒ ∈ R[x], let CR(ƒ) denote the ideal of R generated by the coefficients of ƒ. Define SR = {ƒ ∈ R[x]: cR(ƒ) = R} and UR = {ƒ ∈ R(x): cR(ƒ)– 1 = R}. For a,b ∈ R, write . When no confusion may result, we will write c(ƒ), S, U, and (a:b). It follows that both S and U are multiplicatively closed sets in R[x] [7, Proposition 33.1], [17, Theorem F], and that R[x]s ⊆ R[x]U.The ring R[x]s, denoted by R(x), has been the object of study of several authors (see for example [1], [2], [3], [12]). An especially interesting paper concerning R(x) is that of Arnold's [3], where he, among other things, characterizes when R(x) is a Priifer domain. We shall make special use of his results in our work.

In the paper [6] we described in a precise fashion the notion of transfer of orbital integrals from a reductive group over a local field to an endoscopic group. We did not, however, prove the existence of the transfer. This remains, indeed, an unsolved problem, although in [7] we have reduced it to a local problem at the identity.In the present paper we solve this local problem for two special cases, the group SL(3), which is not so interesting, and the group SU(3), and then conclude that transfer exists for any group of type A2.The methods are those of [4], and are based on techniques of Igusa for the study of the asymptotic behavior of integrals on p-adic manifolds. (As observed in [7], the existence of the transfer over archimedean fields is a result of earlier work by Shelstad.)

The major results in this paper are nine characterizations of completely regular spaces with a unique compatible uniformity. All prior results of this type assumed that the space is Tychonoff (i.e., completely regular and Hausdorff) until the appearance of a companion paper [9] which began this study. The more important characterizations use quasi-uniqueness of R1-compactifications which relate to uniqueness of T2-comPactifications. The features of the other characterizations are: (i) compact subsets linked to Cauchy filters, (ii) C- and C*-embeddings, and (iii) lifting continuous maps to uniformly continuous maps.Section 2 contains information on T0-identification spaces which we will use later in the paper. In Section 3 several properties of uniform identification spaces are developed so that they can be used later. The nine characterizations are established in Section 4. Also it is shown that a space with a unique compatible uniformity is normal if and only if each of its closed subspaces has a unique compatible uniformity.

In this paper we classify finite-dimensional flexible division algebras over the real numbers. We show that every such algebra is either (i) commutative and of dimension one or two, (ii) a slight variant of a noncommutative Jordan algebra of degree two, or (iii) an algebra defined by putting a certain product on the 3 × 3 complex skew-Hermitian matrices of trace zero. A precise statement of this result is given at the end of this section after we have developed the necessary background and terminology. In Section 3 we show that, if one also assumes that the algebra is Lie-admissible, then the structure follows rapidly from results in [2] and [3].All algebras in this paper will be assumed to be finite-dimensional. A nonassociative algebra A is called flexible if (xy)x = x(yx) for all x, y ∈ A.

Let denote the group of all homeomorphisms of a σ-compact manifold which preserve a σ-finite, nonatomic, locally positive and locally finite measure μ. In two recent papers [4, 5] the possible ergodicity of a homeomorphism h in was shown to be related to the homeomorphism h* induced by h on the ends of M. An end of a manifold is, roughly speaking, a distinct way of going to infinity. Those papers demonstrated in particular that always contains an ergodic homeomorphism, paralleling the similar result of Oxtoby and Ulam [11] for compact manifolds with finite measures. Unfortunately the techniques used in [4] and [5] rely on the fact that a skyscraper construction with an ergodic base transformation is ergodic, a result which cannot be extended to finer properties than ergodicity.

In this paper we consider a method for enumerating trees with respect to colour and degree information. The method makes use of elementary decompositions of trees, and the functional equations which are induced. A number of new results are obtained by this means. More specifically, we consider (Section 3) the enumeration of rooted plane X-coloured trees with given colour and edge partitions. Remarkably, the number of such trees which are planted is a multiple of the number of spanning arbores­ cences on a graph with the edge partition as its adjacency matrix. This result is used (Section 4) to obtain the number of rooted plane i£-chromatic trees with fixed chromatic partition, a number given by Tutte [5] for planted trees in the case K = 2. Finally, a new combinatorial correspon­ dence between two sets of trees is given (Section 5) which yields the de Bruijn-van Aardenne Ehrenfest-Smith-Tutte (BEST) theorem as a special case. We use a familiar decomposition of rooted trees. Associated with this is a system of functional equations which may be solved by a specialisa­ tion, given in Section 2, of the Lagrange theorem in many variables. The specialisation accounts for the persistence, in combinatorial enumeration, of determinants of matrices with row and column constraints (see, for example, [6]). Throughout this paper we use the notation: the number of non-root vertices of colour i is nt = ]C^i/

The main object of this paper is to study when infective noetherian modules are artinian. This question was first raised by J. Fisher and an example of an injective noetherian module which is not artinian is given in [9]. However, it is shown in [4] that over commutative rings, and over hereditary noetherian P.I rings, injective noetherian does imply artinian. By combining results of [6] and [4] it can be shown that the above implication is true over any noetherian P.I ring. It is shown in this paper that injective noetherian modules are artinian over rings finitely generated as modules over their centers, and over semiprime rings of Krull dimension 1. It is also shown that every injective noetherian module over a P.I ring contains a simple submodule. Since any noetherian injective module is a finite direct sum of indecomposable injectives it suffices to study when such injectives are artinian. IfQis an injective indecomposable noetherian module, thenQcontains a non-zero submoduleQ0such that the endomorphism rings ofQ0and all its submodules are skewfields. Over a commutative ring, such aQ0is simple. In the non-commutative case very little can be concluded, and many of the difficulties seem to arise here.

This paper contains a set of results concerning paracompactness of locally nice spaces which can be proved by (variations on) the technique of “stationary sets and chaining” combined with other techniques available at the present stage of knowledge in the field. The material covered by the paper is arranged in three sections, each containing, in essence, one main result.The main result of Section 1 says that a locally Lindelöf, submeta-Lindelöf ( = δθ-refinable) space is paracompact if and only if it is strongly collectionwise Hausdorff. Two consequences of this theorem, respectively, answer a question raised by Tall [7], and strengthen a result of Watson [9]. In the last two sections, connected spaces are dealt with. The main result of the second section can be best understood from one of its consequences which says that under 2ωl > 2ω, connected, locally Lindelöf, normal Moore spaces are metrizable.

This paper extends several graph-theoretic results to matroids. The main result of Tutte's paper [10] which introduced the theory of n-connection for matroids was a generalization of an earlier result of his [9] for 3-connected graphs. The latter has since been strengthened by Halin [3] and in Section 3 of this paper we prove a matroid analogue of Halin's result. Tutte used his result for 3-connected graphs to deduce a recursive construction of all simple 3-connected graphs having at least four vertices. In Section 4 we generalize this by giving a recursive construction of all 3-connected matroids of rank at least three. Section 2 contains a generalization to minimally n-connected matroids of a result of Dirac [2] for minimally 2-connected graphs.

The enumeration of the H-equivalence classes of multiplications on a space is a topic of current interest. In this paper we try to study the H-equivalence classes of multiplications on a CW complex X with finitely many non-vanishing homotopy groups, by using the Postnikov decomposition of X and multiplier arguments [1; 4], This paper presents a way to compute the set of H-equivalence classes of multiplications on X from the knowledge of certain quotient sets of H*(B Λ B, ∑) and some homotopy equivalences of B, where B represents the spaces in the Postnikov decomposition of X, and ∑ denotes abelian groups corresponding to the homotopy groups of X.

In [16] Freese showed that the word problem for the free modular lattice on 5 generators is unsolvable. His proof makes essential use of Mclntyre's construction of a finitely presented field with unsolvable word problem [30]. (We follow Cohn [7] in calling what is commonly called a division ring a field, and what is commonly called a field a commutative field.) In this paper we will use similar ideas to obtain unsolvability results for varieties of modular ortholattices. The material in this paper is fairly wide ranging, the following are recommended as reference texts.

The constant term of certain rational functions has attracted much attention recently. For example the Dyson conjecture; that the constant term ofis the multinomial coefficienthas spawned many generalizations (see [2], [7]). In this paper we consider some other families of rational functions which have interesting constant terms. For example, Corollary 4 states that the constant term of(1.1)is . Here, and throughout this paper, A and B denote fixed positive integers.In order to prove this result, we consider the rational function in two variables

In this paper, we continue the study of integral extensions begun in [7]. Whereas in the previous paper, we dealt exclusively with the extension A[x]/(α(x)), α(x) a monic polynomial over A, we now deal with arbitrary integral extensions. Applications of the results presented herein will be made in subsequent papers.To simplify our presentation, we make the following conventions. In a paper published in 1975 [1, § 3], D. S. Mitrinovič and P. M. Vasič used the so-called “centroid method” to obtain two new inequalities which are complementary to (the discrete version of) Jensen's inequality for convex functions. In this paper we shall present a very general version of such inequalities using the same geometric ideas used in [1] but not using the centroid method itself. At the same time we shall extend the domain of the inequalities (even in the discrete case), and clarify the value of the constant (λ) appearing in the inequality. We give applications of the theorems to some general means and also to the classical means. Our first result is given asTHEOREM 1. Let v be a nonnegative measure on a σ-algebra of subsets of a set D and let q, f be real v-measurable functions on D such that q(x) > 0, –∞ < x1 ≦ f(x) ≦ x2 < ∞ for all x ∊ D and ∫D qdv = 1.

This paper continues the investigations in [1] and [2] and extends the results of the latter paper to functions of several complex variables. Namely let λ : R>0 —> R>0 be monotonically increasing. (If λ is non-constant, we also require that log r = 0(λ(r)). We write / = 0(g) to mean that there is a constant C > 0 such that f(r) ≦ Cg(r) except possibly on a set of intervals of finite total length.) Let 0\ denote the set of meromorphic / on Cn for which the Nevanlinna characteristic function [5, p. 174] T(f, r) satisfies T(f, r) = 0(λ(r)).

Throughout this paper we assume that every ring has unity and all modules are unital right modules. A ring R is called a (right) q-ring if every right ideal of R is quasi-injective [4], In this paper we study a generalization of this concept. A ring R is called a (right) weak q-ring (in short, wq-ring) if every right ideal of R, not isomorphic to RR, is quasi-injective. A ring R is called a right pq-ring if every proper right ideal of R is quasi-injective. Any upper triangular 2 X 2 matrix ring over a division ring is a wq-ring, which is not a q-ring. In Section 1, some general properties of wq-rings are established and, in particular, it is shown in (1.8) that a semiprime wq-ring has zero singular ideal.

If X is a dense subspace of Y, much is known about the question of when every bounded continuous real-valued function on X extends to a continuous function on Y. Indeed, this is one of the central topics of [5]. In this paper we are interested in the opposite question: When are there continuous bounded real-valued functions on X which extend to no point of Y – X? (Of course, we cannot hope that every function on X fails to extend since the restrictions to X of continuous functions on Y extend to Y.) In this paper, we show that if Y is a compact metric space and if X is a dense subset of Y, then X admits a bounded continuous function which extends to no point of Y – X if and only if X is completely metrizable. We also show that for certain spaces Y and dense subsets X, the set of bounded functions on X which extend to a point of Y – X form a first category subset of C*(X).

In a previous paper [13] one of us considered Brauer groups Br(C) and class groups Cl(C) attached to certain monoidal categories C of divisorial R-lattices. That paper showed that the groups arising for a suitable pair of categories C1 ⊆ C2 could be related by a tidy exact sequenceIt was shown that this exact sequence specializes to a number of exact sequences which had formerly been handled separately. At the same time the conventional setting of noetherian normal domains was replaced by that of Krull domains, thus generalizing previous results while also simplifying the proofs. This work was carried out in an affine setting, and one aim of the present paper is to carry these results over to Krull schemes. This will enable us to recover the non-affine version of an exact sequence obtained by Auslander [1, p. 261], as well as to introduce a new, non-affine version of a different sequence derived by the same author [2, Theorem 1].

Throughout this paper X will denote a complex Banach space and all operators T will be assumed to be continuous linear transformations from X into X. If T is an operator then ┘(T), γ(T), and R(T) will denote the spectrum of T, the spectral radius of T, and range of T, respectively. This paper contains necessary and sufficient conditions for the (norm) convergence of {Tn} when T is an operator on X.

1. In this paper, we investigate the ranges of projections on certain Banach spaces of functions defined on a diadic tree. The notion of a “tree-like” Banach space is due to James 4], who used it to construct the separable space JT which has nonseparable dual and yet does not contain l1. This idea has proved useful. In [3], Hagler constructed a hereditarily c0 tree space, HT, and Schechtman [6] constructed, for each 1 ≦ p ≦ ∞, a reflexive Banach space, STp with a 1-unconditional basis which does not contain lp yet is uniformly isomorphic to for each n.In [1] we showed that if U is a bounded linear operator on JT, then there exists a subspace W ⊂ JT, isomorphic to JT such that either U or (1 — U) acts as an isomorphism on W and UW or (1 — U)W is complemented in JT. In this paper, we establish this result for the Hagler and Schechtman tree spaces.

All rings in this paper are assumed to be commutative with identity, and the undefined terminology is the same as that in [3]. In 1956, in an important paper [2], M. Nagata constructed an example which showed (among other things): (i) a maximal chain of prime ideals in an integral extension domain R' of a local domain (R, M) need not contract in R to a maximal chain of prime ideals; and, (ii) a prime ideal P in R' may be such that height P < height P ∩ R. In his example, Rf was the integral closure of R and had two maximal ideals. In this paper, by using Nagata's example, we show that there exists a finite local integral extension domain of D = R[X](M,X) for which (i) and (ii) hold (see (2.8.1) and (2.10)).

Norm closed (or weakly closed) Jordan algebras of self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space were initially studied by Topping, Effros, and Stormer [15], [4], [12], [13]. These works are very “spatial”, in that the algebras are considered in one given representation. The introduction of their abstract counterparts, the JB- and JBW-algebras, has led to an increased interest in this subject. The author hopes this paper will support the view that a more “space-free” approach is fruitful, even if only the “concrete” algebras are under study. In accordance with this view, a “JC-algebra” in this paper will mean a normed Jordan algebra over the reals, which is isometrically isomorphic to a norm closed Jordan algebra of self-adjoint operators.Some of the results in this paper are closely related to, or rewordings of, results in the above-mentioned papers. However, I feel that the present approach is sufficiently different to be of interest in itself. In particular, many of the technical difficulties associated with earlier approaches are avoided.

At the Georgia conference in 1961 Fox presented a paper, “Knots and periodic transformations”, in which he asked which knots may be fixed by a periodic transformation of the 3-sphere. He distinguished eight cases according to the type of fixed point set of T and its relationship to the knot. Except for case a), all these cases have since received some attention and conditions have been given for knots to fall into each of these classes. In fact, the problem of deciding which knots fall into category d) (that is “periodic knots“; I will refer to them as cyclically periodic knots) has been the subject of at least six papers [2], [3], [13], [15], [17], [22], but measured by their effectiveness at determining the periods of the knots to nine crossings, the theorems contained in these papers are not entirely satisfactory.

The problem which motivated the writing of this paper is that of finding structure behind the decomposition of the sl3 representation spaces V* ⊗ W = Hom(V, W) for finite dimensional irreducible sl3-modules V and W. For sl2 this extends the classical Clebsch-Gordon problem. The question has been considered for sl3 in a computational way in [5]. In this paper we build a conceptual algebraic framework going beyond the enveloping algebra of sl3.For each dominant integral weight α let Vα be an irreducible representation of sl3 of highest weight α. It is well known that, for weights α, μ, λ, the multiplicity of Vλ in Hom(Vα, Vα+μ) is bounded by the multiplicity of μ in Vλ, with equality for generic α. This suggests the possibility of a single construction of highest weight vectors of weight X in Hom(Vα, Vα+μ) which is valid for all a.

The recent paper of Berlanga and Epstein [5] demonstrated the significant role played by the “ends” of a noncompact manifold M in answering questions relating homeomorphisms of M to measures on M. In this paper we show that an analysis of the end behaviour of measure preserving homeomorphisms of a manifold also leads to an understanding of some of their ergodic properties, and allows results previously obtained for compact manifolds to be extended (with qualifications) to the noncompact case. We will show that ergodicity is typical (dense Gδ) with respect to various compact-open topology closed subsets of the space consisting of all homeomorphisms of a manifold M which preserve a measure μ. It may be interesting for topologists to note that we prove when M is a σ-compact connected n-manifold, n≧ 2, then M is the countable union of an increasing family of compact connected manifolds. If M is a PL or smooth manifold, this is well known and easy. If M is just, however, a topological n-manifold then we apply the recent results [9] and [12] to prove the result. The Borel measure μ, is taken to be nonatomic, locally finite, positive on open sets, and zero for the manifold boundary of M.

The aim of this paper is to extend to a suitable class of topological semigroups parts of well-defined theory of representations of topological groups. In attempting to obtain these results it was soon realized that no general theory was likely to be obtainable for all locally compact semigroups. The reason for this is the absence of any analogue of the group algebra Ll(G). So the theory in this paper is restricted to a certain family of topological semigroups. In this account we shall only give the details of those parts of proofs which depart from the standard proofs of analogous theorems for groups.On a locally compact semigroup S the algebra of all μ ∊ M(S) for which the mapping and of S to M(S) (where denotes the point mass at x) are continuous when M(S) has the weak topology was first studied in the sequence of papers [1, 2, 3] by A. C. and J. W. Baker.

The purpose of this paper is to continue the investigation into Massey products defined on two dimensional polyhedra, initiated in [13]. It will be shown that for many such spaces there is a hyperbolic model which can be used to study Massey products. More precisely, Massey products may be interpreted as intersections of geodesies in the Poincaré model. These elements are called minimal Massey products and are the analogue of Massey products over a system considered in Porter's paper. They enjoy the property of being uniquely defined (without indeterminacy) and of being multilinear and natural. Minimal products also satisfy symmetry properties generalising the symmetry properties enjoyed by cup products.A device which will be useful in the proof of the main theorem, 7.4, is the introduction of a class of complexes called basic complexes. These generalise the notion of a surface and each one houses a standard copy of a Massey product.

In [18], the author initiated an investigation of compact, Banach-module-valued derivations of C*-algebras. In collaboration with C. A. Akemann [3] and S.-K. Tsui [16], he determined the structure of all compact and weakly compact, A-valued derivations of a C*-algebra A, and of all compact, B(H)-valued derivations of a C*-subalgebra of B(H), the algebra of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space H. In this paper, we begin the study of weakly compact, B(H)-valued derivations of C*-subalgebras of B(H).Let R be a C*-subalgebra of B(H), δ:R → B(H) a weakly compact derivation, i.e., a weakly compact linear map which hasSince δ has a unique weakly compact extension to a derivation of the closure of R in the weak operator topology (WOT) on B(H) (consult the proof of Theorem 3.1 of [16]), we may assume with no loss of generality that R is a von Neumann subalgebra of B(H). In this paper, we determine in Lemma 4.1 and Theorems 4.3 and 4.10 the structure of δ when R is type I, using I. E. Segal's multiplicity theory [14] for type I von Neumann algebras and results of E. Christensen [6], [7] on B(H)-valued derivations of von Neumann algebras.

Let R = ⊕α∊гRα be an integral domain graded by an arbitrary torsionless grading monoid Γ. In this paper we consider to what extent conditions on the homogeneous elements or ideals of R carry over to all elements or ideals of R. For example, in Section 3 we show that if each pair of nonzero homogeneous elements of R has a GCD, then R is a GCD-domain. This paper originated with the question of when a graded UFD (every homogeneous element is a product of principal primes) is a UFD. If R is Z+ or Z-graded, it is known that a graded UFD is actually a UFD, while in general this is not the case. In Section 3 we consider graded GCD-domains, in Section 4 graded UFD's, in Section 5 graded Krull domains, and in Section 6 graded π-domains.

Let Σak be an infinite series of real numbers and let π be a permutation of N, the set of positive integers. The series Σaπ(k) is then called a rearrangement of Σak. A classical theorem of Riemann states that if Σak is a conditionally convergent series and s is any fixed real number (or ± ∞), then there is a permuation π such that Σaπ(k) = s. The problem of determining those permutations that convert any conditionally convergent series into a convergent rearrangement (such permuations are called convergence preserving) has received wide attention (see, for example [6]). Of special interest is a paper by P. A. B. Pleasants [5] in which is shown that the set of convergence preserving permutations do not form a group.In this paper we consider questions similar to those above, but for rearrangements of divergent series of positive terms. We establish some notation before stating the precise problem.

Let G be the group of R-rational points on a reductive group defined over Q and T an arithmetic subgroup. The aim of this paper is to describe in some detail the Schwartz space (whose definition I recall in Section 1) and in particular to explain a decomposition of this space into constituents parametrized by the T-associate classes of rational parabolic subgroups of G. This is analogous to the more elementary of the two well known decompositions of L2 (T\G) in [20](or [17]), and a proof of something equivalent was first sketched by Langlands himself in correspondence with A. Borel in 1972. (Borel has given an account of this in [8].)Langlands’ letter was in response to a question posed by Borel concerning a decomposition of the cohomology of arithmetic groups, and the decomposition I obtain here was motivated by a similar question, which is dealt with at the end of the paper.

This paper is concerned with the description of principal congruence relations. Given elements a and b of a universal algebra , let θ(a, b) denote the smallest congruence relation on containing the pair 〈a, b〉. One of the earliest characterizations of θ(a, b) is Mal'cev's well-known result [5, Theorem 1.10.3], which says that c ≡ d(θ(a, b)) if and only if there exists a sequence z0, z1, …, zn of elements of and a sequence f1, f2, …, fn of unary algebraic functions such that c = z0, d = zn, and for each i = 1, …, n,Although this describes θ(a, b) in terms of a set of unary algebraic functions, it is not possible to predict the number or complexity of the unary functions used independently of the choice of a, b, c and d. Several recent papers ([1], [2], [3], [4], [6]) investigate classes of algebras in which principal congruences are simpler.

Let SO*(2n) be the group of quaternionic n × n matrices A satisfying A*JA = J, where J is a fixed skew-hermitian invertible matrix. An element R ∊ SO*(2n) is called a reflection if R2 = In and R — In has rank one. We assume that n ≧ 2, in which case S*(2n) is generated by reflections. The length of A ∊ SO*(2n) is the smallest integer k(≧0) such that A can be written as A = R1R2 … Rk where R1, …, Rk are reflections. In this paper, for each A ∊ SO*(2n), we compute its length l(A). Set r(A) = rank (A — In). Already in Section 3 we are able to show that the difference δ = l(A) – r(A) can take only three values 0, 1, or 2. The remainder of the paper deals with the problem of separating these three possibilities. The main results are stated in Section 4 and proved in Section 6. The intermediate Section 5 consists of a sequence of lemmas which are needed for the proof. Clearly l(A) depends only on the conjugacy class of A and the main results in Section 4 are stated in terms of conjugacy classes. For the description of conjugacy classes in SO*(2n) we refer the reader to [1]. The present paper relies heavily on our previous paper [5] where the analogous problem was solved for the groups U(p, q). It is worth remarking that only the various lemmas from that paper were used but not the main theorem.

1. Introduction. The remarkable 1927 paper by J. H. Redfield [13] which anticipated many recent combinatorial results in Polya counting theory and, in fact, predated Polya's theorem by ten years has been discussed at length by Harary and Palmer [8], Foulkes [5; 6], Sheehan [15; 16] and Read [12], not to mention de Bruijn [3] and others. We shall, in this paper, demonstrate how multilinear techniques may be used in this context. The Redfield superposition theorem and decomposition theorem turn out to be statements about a group acting on finite function spaces, and may thus be dealt with in multilinear terms. We shall prove Redfield's results and an extension due to Foulkes [5].

G. T. Whyburn, in 1926, began the development of cyclic element theory for Peano continua. This theory proved fruitful in the study of Peano spaces and a comprehensive development of the theory for metric spaces was presented in [6]. An excellent history of the theory is to be found in [4]. In [7] and [5] the generalization of cyclic element theory to more general spaces was begun. However, in each of these papers only basic definitions were set forth and fundamental results obtained. In this paper, we concern ourselves primarily with connected and locally connected Hausdorff spaces, developing the cyclic element theory initiated in [7] and demonstrating that the theory has many of the applications to connected and locally connected Hausdorff spaces that the classical theory has to Peano spaces.
