European aspen is a keystone species in boreal forests, which support numerous ecologically important and endangered species. As detection of those species by remote sensing is impossible, we instead investigated the detection of large aspen trees using airborne laser scanning and aerial image data. However, this is a challenge due to their low quantity and scattered occurrence. The performance was assessed with representative and unrepresentative (where aspens were over-represented) samples of the population. First, we detected individual trees and then the random forest (RF) classifier was used to identify large aspens. The RF classification was implemented with and without synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) to balance the training data due to the rarity of large aspens. At the tree-level, the best F1-score (0.44) was obtained when the unrepresentative plot data were used with SMOTE. However, the F1-score decreased to 0.21 when the representative data were used. The best plot-level (plots with at least one aspen tree) F1-score with the representative plot data was 0.41. We conclude that although data augmentation may improve the result, it is difficult to detect large aspen trees in genuine populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantitative decision analysis and respective planning models offer many benefits in forest planning. They are efficient, quick, inexpensive, objective, and repeatable. However, quantitative planning and the respective planning models also include many sources of uncertainty. In this paper our research objective is to analyse decision makers’ preferential uncertainty in the context of multicriteria forestry decision making by using statistical models for so-called interval-scale continuous decision problems. The models are based on 0–1-type utility functions by applying a Finnish school grading system for collecting the preference data. The basic idea is to assess the preferences at some discrete points and then estimate the continuous priority function according to the statistical estimation techniques. An interactive approach for reducing the preferential uncertainty included in the priority model is also developed. In the interactive step, the improvements of the priority model are based on uncertainty measures related to local and (or) global priority models. The role of statistical uncertainty analysis is to make the interactive planning process more efficient and reliable. To test the effect of application time on the efficacy of a biological control agent to prevent sprouting of cut stumps, birches (Betula pendula Roth. and Betula pubescens Ehrh.) were cut and stumps treated with a decay fungus (Chondrostereum purpureum (Pers. ex Fr.) Pouzar) at different times during one growing season. Applications were conducted at 2 week intervals. The presence of fruiting bodies was examined three times during the 2 years following treatment. Sprouting was measured twice. Fructification was most abundant 1 year after the treatment, and the frequency of stumps with fruiting bodies was highest when the stumps were treated between May and July. Treatment reduced the percentage of living stumps compared with controls, except if conducted in late autumn. The reduction was the highest on stumps treated in the middle of July; 2 years after the treatment, only 12.5% of treated stumps were resprouting compared with 74% of control stumps. Also, the number of living sprouts per stump decreased by the treatment, except if conducted in late autumn. Although the number of living sprouts per stump decreased owing to C. purpureum treatment, it had no effect on the maximum height of the sprouts. Pouzar) à différents moments durant une saison de croissance. Les traitements ont été appliqués à 2 semaines d’intervalle. La présence de sporophores a été évaluée à trois reprises au cours des 2 années qui ont suivi le traitement. La production de rejets a été mesurée à deux reprises. La production de sporophores a été la plus abondante un an après le traitement et la fréquence des souches sur lesquelles il y avait un sporophore était la plus élevée chez les souches traitées entre les mois de mai et juillet. Le traitement a réduit le nombre de souches vivantes comparativement aux témoins à l’exception des souches traitées tard à l’automne. La réduction était la plus forte chez les souches traitées à la mi-juillet; 2 ans après le traitement, seulement 12,5 % des souches traitées produisaient des rejets comparativement à 74 % des souches témoins. Le traitement a aussi réduit le nombre de rejets par souche excepté s’il avait été appliqué tard à l’automne. Coarse woody debris (CWD) was studied in old Pinus sylvestris L. dominated forests in three geographic regions in the middle boreal vegetation zone: (i) in H me in southwestern Finland, characterized by a long history of forest utilization, (ii) in Kuhmo in northeastern Finland, with a more recent history of forest utilization, and (iii) in the Vienansalo wilderness area in northwestern Russia, characterized by large areas of almost natural forest. Within the geographic regions the measured 0.2-ha plots were divided into three stand types according to the degree of human impact: (i) natural stands, (ii) selectively logged stands, and (iii) managed stands. The results showed that compared with natural forests, forest management has strongly reduced both the amount and diversity of CWD. The highest total CWD volumes were found in the natural stands in H me (mean 67 m3 ha?1) and Kuhmo (92 m3 ha?1) and in the selective logged stands in Vienansalo (80 m3 ha?1), while the lowest CWD volumes were found in the managed stands in H me (7 m3 ha?1) and Kuhmo (22 m3 ha?1). The duration of forest utilization also plays a role, as forests with short management histories (Kuhmo region) still carried structural legacies from earlier more natural stages of the forest. In addition to lower total CWD volumes, managed stands also largely lacked certain dead wood characteristics, particularly large dead trees and standing dead trees with structural diversity characteristics (such as stem breakage, leaning stems, and fire scars) when compared with natural and selectively logged stands. The CWD characteristics of stands selectively logged in the past were often comparable with those of natural stands, suggesting that old selectively logged stands can be of high value from the nature conservation point of view.
