Trade of the OECD countries has grown faster than income during the postwar period. This paper tests a number of different hypotheses for the observed growth in the trade/income ratio. For small open economies, increases in real output and international reserves, as well as declines in tariff rates are associated with growth in the ratio. Old scrap and primary metal ores are substitute raw materials in metal production. The paper explores the changing composition in their use following a permanent deceleration in economic growth. The cases of copper and iron/steel are employed to track the usage of scrap after a secular slow-down in the rate of growth of finished metal demand, such as occurred in the mid-1970s. Economic growth, portfolio balance, and the balance of payments. The paper generalizes current discussions on the problem of growth and the balance of payments, using a steady-state model which includes commodity, money, bonds, and equities. Based on the assumption that the flow demand for securities is determined by the wealth owners' portfolio preferences, while the flow supply of securities is determined by technical conditions, it is shown that whether the process of growth induces an excess demand or excess supply of securities (a deficit or surplus in the capital account) depends on the relative magnitudes of the income elasticities of demand for assets, the elasticity of substitution between capital and labour, the capital/output ratio, and various asset/income ratios. Abstract. I present revised estimates of real gross manufacturing output and growth. Also, for the first time, estimates are presented for real value added (1) in manufacturing; (2) per capita; and (3) per employee in manufacturing, and their corresponding growth rates. These estimates involve the use of existing price indexes and new ones constructed for this study. Details on the construction of these indexes and output estimates are also presented. The results of this paper refute the received view that Canada's manufacturing sector sustained steady and relatively vigorous growth over the period 1870-1910. My findings suggest that the growth performance of Canada's manufacturing sector became substantive only at the turn of the twentieth century with the arrival of the wheat boom. Abstract. In this paper the long-run effects of the change in the degree of monopoly on the welfare of a society is examined, considering an economy producing two goods, an investment good and a consumption good, under the assumption that the changes in the relative price due to the changes in the degree of monopoly can affect the long-run aggregate stock of capital. Our main result is that the decrease in the degree of monopoly in the consumption-good sector is likely to cause negative economic growth and, therefore, decrease the per capita consumption as well as the aggregate stock of capital in the long run. Abstract. I use U.S. manufacturing industry data to estimate a system of three equations implied by a model of R&D-induced growth in steady state. These equations relate R&D intensity to patenting, patenting to technological progress, and technological progress to economic growth. In each case, I find evidence of positive impact. Thus, I reject the null hypothesis that growth is not induced by R&D in favour of the Schumpeterian endogenous growth framework without scale effects. Abstract. The relationship between growth and unemployment in a general equilibrium shirking efficiency wage model is explored. In contrast to past work on this subject, detected shirkers are not dismissed but instead incur a monetary punishment. As a result of this modification, the model can account for a stable rate of unemployment when there is positive population growth and/or technological growth in the economy. Moreover, I show that institutions and policies that limit the ability of firms to punish detected shirkers or restrict their use of discretionary bonuses can increase unemployment and reduce the economy's long run growth rate. Abstract Empirical evidence linking exports to economic growth has been mixed and inconclusive. This study re-examines the export-led growth (ELG) hypothesis for Canada by testing for Granger causality from exports to national output growth using vector error correction models (VECM) and the augmented vector autoregressive (VAR) methodology developed in Toda and Yamamoto (1995). Application of recent developments in time series modelling and the inclusion of relevant variables omitted in previous studies help to clarify the contradictory results from prior studies on the Canadian economy. The empirical results suggest that a long-run steady state exists among the model's six variables and that Granger causal flow is unidirectional from real exports to real GDP.
