Depth profile techniques for U-Pb geochronology and rare earth element (REE) geochemistry were conducted on unpolished, Archean zircon with metasomatic rims from metasedimentary rocks within the Horseshoe Lake greenstone belt, western Superior Province, Canada. These zircon crystals are shown to have isotopically distinct rims (typically <5 μm thick) compared with the interiors of the crystal. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) U-Pb depth profile analyses of the rims define two different 207Pb/206Pb age populations at ca. 2920 and 2869 Ma, which are >100 million years younger than the cores. The 207Pb/206Pb rim ages can be temporally correlated with regional magmatism and with a later, potentially Au-bearing, hydrothermal event synchronous with greenschist-facies metamorphism and regional deformation. Notably, the zircons do not record evidence of local ca. 2741-2715 Ma magmatism manifested by the emplacement of a quartz-feldspar porphyry dike swarm. Laser ablation - inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) REE depth profile analyses on the same unpolished zircon show that the rims are commonly characterized by low Th/U ratios, elevated Hf, and variable REE concentrations in comparison with the interior of the grains. The variations in rim and core chemistry suggest that these elements, along with common Pb, were mobilized by fluids and interacted with zircon in the metasediments, resulting in the production of the metasomatic rims. In summary, this paper shows that depth profiling techniques applied to unpolished zircon can be useful to elucidate the tectonic, and potentially metallogenic, history of a complex Archean terrane. The southeastern Omineca Belt of the Canadian Cordillera preserves a record of overlapping Barrovian and Buchan metamorphism spanning 180-50 Ma. This paper documents the timing, character, and spatial relationships that define separate domains of Middle Jurassic, Early Cretaceous, and Late Cretaceous deformation and metamorphism, and the nature of the geological interfaces that exist between them. A domain of Early Jurassic deformation (D1) and regional greenschist-facies metamorphism (M1) is cross-cut by Middle Jurassic (174-161 Ma) intrusions. Associated contact aureoles are divided into lower pressure (cordierite-dominated; ∼2.5-3.3 kbar; 1 kbar = 100 MPa) and higher pressure (staurolite-bearing; 3.5-4.2 kbar) subtypes; contact metamorphic kyanite occurs rarely in some staurolite-bearing aureoles. Jurassic structures are progressively overprinted northwards by Early Cretaceous deformation and metamorphism (D2M2), manifested in a tightening of Jurassic structures, development of more pervasive ductile fabrics, and Barrovian metamorphism. The D2M2 domain is the southerly continuation of the 600 km long Selkirk-Monashee-Cariboo metamorphic belt. Mid-Cretaceous intrusions (118-90 Ma) were emplaced throughout the D2M2 domain, the earliest of which contain D2 fabrics, but cut M2 isograds. The D2M2 domain makes a continuous, southeasterly transition into a domain of Late Cretaceous regional Barrovian metamorphism and deformation (D3M3; 94-76 Ma). The interface between these two domains is obscured by the coaxial nature of the deformation and the apparent continuity of the metamorphic zones, resulting in a complex and cryptic interface. Similarities between the D3M3 domain and the Selkirk Crest of Idaho and Washington suggest that this domain is the northerly continuation of the northward-plunging Priest River Complex. With the success of Bakken tight oil (tight sandstone oil and shale oil) and Eagle Ford tight oil in North America, tight oil has become a research focus in petroleum geology. In China, tight oil reservoirs are predominantly distributed in lacustrine basins. The Triassic Chang 6 Member is the main production layer of tight oil in the Ordos Basin, in which the episodes, timing, and drive of tight oil charging have been analyzed through the petrography, fluorescence microspectrometry, microthermometry, and trapping pressure simulations of fluid inclusions in the reservoir beds. Several conclusions have been reached in this paper. First, aqueous inclusions with five peaks of homogenization temperatures and oil inclusions with three peaks of homogenization temperatures occurred in the Chang 6 reservoir beds. The oil inclusions are mostly distributed in fractures that cut across and occur within the quartz grains, in the quartz overgrowth and calcite cements, and the fractures that occur within the feldspar grains, with blue-green, green, and yellow-green fluorescence colours. Second, the peak wavelength, Q650/500, and QF535 of the fluorescence microspectrometry indicate three charging episodes of tight oil with different oil maturities. The charging timings (141-136, 126-118, and 112-103 Ma) have been ascertained by projecting the homogenization temperatures of aqueous inclusions onto the geological time axis. Third, excess-pressure differences up to 10 MPa between the Chang 7 source rocks and the Chang 6 reservoir beds were the main driving mechanism supporting the process of nonbuoyancy migration. Infestation by the mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae, decimated the forests of central British Columbia from 1999 to 2012, severely impacting the forest industry of the Nechako-Chilcotin plateau. In response, all levels of government recognized the value in developing other areas of economic activity, such as hydrocarbon and mineral exploitation, to support local economies. Exploration for resources beneath the Nechako-Chilcotin plateau has historically been constrained by Tertiary volcanic sequences and Quaternary glacial deposits that obscure the underlying geology and limit geophysical imaging. Thus, a coordinated program comprising additional geological mapping, borehole data analysis, and modern geophysical surveys of the area was initiated in 2006, with the objective of better defining the subsurface geology, solving problems of imaging through the complex near-surface, and developing improved regional geological and tectonic models. An initial set of papers arising from this fieldwork, which focused on issues relevant to mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, was published in June 2011 in a Special Issue of the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences. This Introduction to the second 'Mountain Pine Beetle' Special Issue summarizes a set of scientific papers that focus on topics more related to hydrocarbon exploration and the large-scale structure of the crust. The papers deal with the development, thickness, and present distribution of the most prospective Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, as well as characterizing the physical properties of the near-surface volcanic units. Totolapa is one of the amber Lagerstätten from Chiapas, southwestern Mexico, which include the Simojovel and Huitiupán deposits. Despite the remarkable paleobiological heritage of Chiapas amber biota, the fossil record of ants from Totolapa has so far not been well studied. Based on exceptionally preserved specimens, four ant genera from the Totolapa amber deposits are reported in this paper, including Forelius, Azteca, Tapinoma, and Camponotus (Hymenoptera, Formicidae). Whereas the genera Azteca, Tapinoma, and Camponotus are previously known from amber quarries of Simojovel, this paper represents the first record of the presence of Forelius in Chiapas amber. The strong tidal currents of the Minas Passage in the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia, have made this area an important site for testing and development of tidal power technologies. Understanding sediment processes in this area is essential for determining the impacts that large-scale tidal power extraction would have on the system. Previous estimates of sediment input to the Basin suggest that much more sediment enters the Basin than accumulates within it; therefore, the bottom sediment texture should be in hydrodynamic equilibrium with bottom currents. A recent study, however, showed that sediment texture is generally finer that what was expected based on current speeds. This paper uses geographic information systems methods to provide updated and more highly resolved measurements of the amount of sediment entering the Minas Basin from the dominant source, which is coastal erosion. Volumetric input from coastal erosion is 1.1 × 106 m3·a−1, which is more than two times smaller than previous estimates. This updated value makes input rates comparable to accumulation rates, and agrees with the hypothesis that bottom sediment texture is not in equilibrium with current speeds. The Altyn Tagh Fault (ATF) defines the northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau; therefore, its tectonic history is key to understanding the plateau's northward growth. However, our understanding of ATF tectonics is incomplete, owing in part to a lack of constraints in detailed basin evolution studies of this region. Approximately 1700 m of Middle Miocene - Pliocene clastic strata extracted from a section of the Yitunbulake Basin adjacent to the midsection of the ATF records the uplift of the Altyn Tagh Range. This paper reports 490 concordant detrital zircon U-Pb ages derived from this set of strata. In addition, paleocurrents and conglomerate clastic compositions were measured to determine the provenance of the basin. The dominant detrital zircon age populations within these sedimentary rocks are 260-240, 500-400, and 950-900 Ma. The 260-240 Ma component decreases sharply above the Lower (Xia) Youshashan (XYSS) Formation. Moreover, we performed (U-Th)/He dating on 260-240 Ma detrital zircons from the XYSS Formation to determine its source region. The results indicate that sandstones in this formation are most likely sourced immediately from plutonic rocks widely distributed in the Eastern Kunlun Mountains. The upward change in detrital zircon U-Pb age components in the section demonstrates that widespread surface uplift of the Akatengneng Mountains in the midsection of the ATF likely occurred after ∼16-15 Ma, which is synchronous with accelerated tectonic deformation along the ATF and a rapid increase in the sedimentation rate in the Qaidam Basin since the Middle Miocene. In southwest Yukon, the boundary between the Alexander terrane and Wrangellia corresponds with the Duke River fault. In this paper, we report on observations of the Duke River fault from four localities in southwest Yukon, and provide new constraints on (1) Permian regional metamorphism within the Alexander terrane, (2) Cretaceous ductile deformation along the Duke River fault, and (3) post-Miocene brittle deformation along the fault. Within these areas, the Duke River fault juxtaposes imbricated, pervasively foliated and folded greenschist-facies rocks of the Alexander terrane southwest of the fault against sub-greenschist-facies, less deformed rocks of Wrangellia. Multiple lines of evidence from this region indicate the Alexander terrane has been juxtaposed against Wrangellia along a southwest-dipping thrust fault. 40Ar/39Ar dates from muscovite, which grew during faulting or have been reset by motion along the Duke River fault, range from 79 to 105 Ma, suggesting that ductile movement along the fault is at least as old as Cretaceous (Albian to Cenomanian). This phase of faulting is interpreted as the local expression of Cretaceous shortening, which has been documented along the length and width of the Cordillera. Cretaceous structures along the Duke River fault are overprinted by brittle deformation that affects rocks as young as Miocene (or Pliocene?). This paper reports on the landform assemblages at the northern confluence of the Late Wisconsinan Laurentide and Cordilleran ice sheets with montane and piedmont glaciers in the northern Rockies and southern Mackenzie Mountains. Recent observations in northeastern British Columbia refine our knowledge of the pattern and style of ice sheet retreat, glacial lake formation, and meltwater drainage. At the onset of deglaciation, confluent Laurentide and Cordilleran terminal ice margins lay between 59°N, 124°30′W and 60°N, 125°15′W. From this terminal limit, ice sheets retreated into north-central British Columbia and Yukon Territory, with remnant Cordilleran ice and montane glaciers confined to mountain valleys and the Liard Plateau. Distinctive end moraines are not associated with the retreat of Cordilleran ice in these areas. Laurentide ice retreated northeastward from uplands and the plateaus; then separated into lobes occupying the Fort Nelson and Petitot river valleys. Ice-retreat landforms include recessional end moraines (sometimes overridden and drumlinized), hill-hole pairs, crevasse-fill deposits, De Geer-like ribbed till ridges, hummocky moraines, kames, meltwater features, and glacial lake deposits that fall within the elevation range of glacial Lake Liard and glacial Lake Fort Nelson (ca. 840-380 m). Meltwater and sediment transport into glacial lakes Fort Nelson, Liard, Nahanni, and Mackenzie was sustained by remnant ice in the Liard River and Fort Nelson River drainage basins until the end of glaciation. Optical dating of sand from stabilized parabolic dunes on the Liard Plateau indicates that proglacial conditions, lake formation, and drainage began before 13.0 ± 0.5 ka (calendar years). The Petitot, Fort Nelson, and Liard rivers all occupy spillways incised into glacial deposits and bedrock by meltwater overflow from glacial lakes Peace and Hay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents results of a laser ablation - inductively coupled plasma - quadrapole mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-QMS) U-Pb dating study of small in situ zircon grains from samples collected in the vicinity of the Greens Creek massive sulphide deposit, on northern Admiralty Island, southeast Alaska. The Greens Creek mine is a volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit in the central portion of the Alexander Triassic metallogenic belt (ATMB) and is one of the top global silver producers despite having a dominantly mafic metavolcanic stratigraphic footwall. The stratigraphic footwall is a Mississippian mafic metavolcanic sequence with a protolith age of approximately 340-330 Ma. The first U-Pb zircon constrained chronostratigraphy for the area places the deposit near, or at, the base of the host Late Triassic stratigraphy just above an approximately 100 million year old unconformity and probably 10-15 million years older than mineralization at the Palmer and Windy Craggy deposits in the northern portion of the ATMB. The stratigraphic location of the Greens Creek deposit is atypical for a syngenetic massive sulphide deposit, and this may, at least partly, explain its unusual metal endowment. Pre-mineralization Permian U-Pb zircon metamorphic ages are consistent with published 273-260 Ma white mica ages related to the collision of the Admiralty and Craig subterranes, the basement to the ATMB. The much older age of the footwall rocks and their Permian pre-mineralization metamorphism demonstrates that though the mafic volcanic rocks are not genetically linked to the deposit, they likely influenced the style of alteration and mineralization. The Taku terrane consists of metamorphosed Carboniferous through Triassic marine clastic strata, volcanic rocks, and limestone that occur along the western margin of the Coast Mountains in southeastern Alaska. These rocks are juxtaposed along mid-Cretaceous thrust faults over Jura-Cretaceous basinal strata of the Gravina belt to the west and beneath Proterozoic through Carboniferous metamorphic rocks of the Yukon-Tanana terrane to the east. This paper presents U-Pb ages and Hf isotope analyses of detrital zircons from the Taku terrane, and compares these values with information from the adjacent Wrangellia, Alexander, and northern and southern portions of the Yukon-Tanana terrane (YTTn and YTTs). These comparisons suggest that ( i) Carboniferous strata of the Taku terrane were shed mainly from mid-Paleozoic igneous rocks of YTTs, ( ii) Permian strata of the Taku terrane were shed from mid-Paleozoic igneous rocks and intraformational Lower Permian volcanic rocks of YTTs as well as Upper Permian volcanic rocks exposed in YTTn, and ( iii) Triassic sandstones were shed from mid-Paleozoic igneous rocks of YTTs, whereas conglomerates were shed mainly from mid-Paleozoic arc rocks in YTTn. Hf isotope analyses of Paleozoic zircons record increasing continental input during Silurian-Devonian and Permian phases of magmatism. Similarities in isotopic characteristics, combined with stratigraphic and geochemical information presented by previous workers, suggest that strata of the Taku terrane accumulated on (and partly as lateral equivalents of) rocks of YTTs, and that the combined assemblages formed outboard or along strike of YTTn. The Carboniferous - early Permian plant genus Lesleya is a characteristic component of 'dryland floras' that occupied a wide range of moisture-stressed, well-drained environments in tropical regions of Euramerica. Fossil records of Lesleya are almost exclusively found in basinal lowlands. For example, occurrences in Early Pennsylvanian-age, seasonally dry, parautochthonous deposits in basinal lowlands of North America (e.g., Illinois Basin, USA) indicate that Lesleya lived in that region in low-altitude (lowland) paleoenvironments during dry climatic intervals. In this paper, we document the first occurrence of Lesleya during the Carboniferous on the Iberian Massif, in lower Gzhelian (Upper Pennsylvanian) strata of the Douro Carboniferous Basin, in northwestern Portugal. This newly discovered occurrence includes a new species, Lesleya iberiensis sp. nov., recognized on the basis of natural molds of leaves. The Portuguese Lesleya fossils are from upland intramontane deposits and occur between coal beds. Their fossil remains are preserved in mica-rich shales that were deposited between sandstone-dominated fluvial and shale-dominated lacustrine deposits, suggesting that this megaflora was deposited near freshwater bodies. These new data provide evidence that this megaflora grew in mountain riparian environments within the Variscan orogen, either in localized, well-drained areas or during drier climatic intervals in the Late Pennsylvanian. The δ13Ccarb records from two geographically close sections of the shallow-water Kozel Limestone Member (late Wenlock Motol Formation; Perunica microplate) significantly differ in the magnitude of the Homerian carbon isotope excursion as well as in their dolomite content. The present paper tests a hypothesis as to whether a difference of about 2‰ in the magnitude of the δ13Ccarb anomaly is caused by the different content of dolomite, which could be enriched in both 13C and 18O relative to coexisting calcite, as has been suggested by experimental data. The new data obtained reveal that the δ18O composition of calcite and dolomite was probably controlled by the pore-fluid composition during limestone diagenesis and that both carbonates seem to be close to equilibrium in oxygen isotope composition. On the other hand, the δ13C values of dolomite are similar to those of calcite, and thus the carbon isotope composition of both carbonates was probably determined by the precursor carbonate composition. Moreover, the values of δ13Cdolomite/δ13Ccalcite ratios as well as their variability suggest that both calcite and dolomite did not reach equilibrium in their carbon isotope composition. Whole-rock, mineralogical, and C and O isotope data clearly show that dolomite is not the cause for the differences in magnitudes of the δ13C records observed between dolomite-bearing and dolomite-lacking shallow-water limestone successions. The question as to whether the observed differences in the δ13C records of the studied sections across the Homerian carbon isotope excursion were controlled by the dependence of seawater composition on water depth and (or) proximity to shoreline or if the δ13C values were later affected by secondary processes during limestone diagenesis is still unsolved. The article presents author's views on the research paper titled "Generation of heavy-mineral glacial indicator dispersal trains from a diabase sill, Nipigon region, northwestern Ontario," by Phillip Larson and Howard Mooers, that was previously published in the journal. He comments that the authors did not consider information that could significantly alter several of the assumptions and conclusions made by them in the paper.

The holotype of Garudimimus brevipes, discovered from the Upper Cretaceous sediments of Mongolia and named by Barsbold in 1981, is redescribed in detail in this paper. Reexamination of the holotype reveals a great deal of anatomical information, which allows us to revise the original diagnosis of this taxon and make comparisons with other ornithomimosaur taxa to understand the evolution of ornithomimosaurs. This paper suggests that characters used to differentiate this taxon in the original paper (short ilia, short metatarsals, exposure of the proximal end of metatarsal III, presence of pedal digit I, and absence of pleurocoels) are not apomorphies but represent the primitive conditions in ornithomimosaurs and are symplesiomorphies. Revised diagnoses are assigned for G. brevipes (posteriorly positioned jaw articulation, fossae at base of dorsal process of supraoccipital, paired depressions on neural spines of proximal caudal vertebra, and deep groove on lateral surface of pedal phalanges III-1 and III-2). Metatarsals of Garudimimus display a non-arctometatarsalian condition as in an Early Cretaceous form, Harpymimus, but the constriction of metatarsal III in Garudimimus is intermediate between Harpymimus and the arctometatarsalian condition in Gallimimus and other derived ornithomimosaurs (ornithomimids). Garudimimus is the only non-ornithomimid ornithomimosaur with edentulous jaws, which were probably covered by rhamphothecae. The loss of teeth with evolution of rhamphothecae and development of a cutting edge in the dentary of Garudimimus suggest the acquisition of feeding habits that included plucking food at the anterior portion of the jaw and cutting at the middle portion, similar to ornithomimids. This paper advocates a modified parameterization for transversely isotropic (TI) media in seismology. Transversely isotropic media may be parameterized by the reference quasi-compressional (qP) and quasi-shear (qSV) velocities, α and β, together with the two parameters, ε and δ. These last two variables account for the deviation of the coupled qP and qSV modes of wave propagation from the isotropic case. The dimensionless quantity ε is a measure of the ellipticity of the qP wavefront. The "strange" parameter δ has been employed as a measure of deviation of the qP wavefront or slowness surface from an ellipsoid of revolution and also of the qSV wavefront or slowness surface from a sphere. As the parameter δ has been described as "conceptually inaccessible"; it is logical to determine an alternative characterization in physically realizable quantities. As in the earlier literature, the defining parameter for the degree of ellipticity of the qP slowness or energy surface in a TI medium is chosen here to be ε. In addition, the deviation of both the qP and qSV surfaces from the degenerate ellipsoidal case will be specified here as σ. An examination of the linearized phase (wavefront normal) velocities, and the linearized PP and SVSV reflection coefficients at an interface between two TI media is undertaken to emphasize the merits of this modified parameterization. In this paper, a reformulation of existing equations as functions of the two independent variables, (ε, σ), is presented. Published estimates on the paleoclimate of the Florissant fossil beds site of Colorado (34.1 Ma) have led to extremely different estimates of paleoelevation. The purpose of this paper is to review the paleoclimate methods used and to add the coexistence approach (CA) method to estimate paleotemperature for the Florissant site. The basis of the CA method is the dependence on overlapping climatic requirements for different taxa in the flora and their nearest living relatives. These relationships tie the fossil identities to the actual plant habitats and climatic requirements of close relatives. Based on the CA method, we conclude that the mean annual temperature ranged between 14.3 and 18.2 °C. These results support the conclusions offered by several other studies that the Florissant was a warm temperate to subtropical flora, and they are consistent with recent conclusions by structural geologists as well as other studies, indicating that the Florissant site was deposited at a relatively low elevation, probably between 1 and 1.5 km. The Cretaceous to Paleogene High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP) occurs in circum-Arctic regions, and the largest portion of the province occurs in Canada's Arctic Archipelago. This paper reviews and documents the geometry and distribution of the Canadian portion of the HALIP, focussing most notably on the architecture of its intrusive component. The extent of dyke swarms and sills of the Canadian HALIP is updated and is shown to be greater than previously acknowledged. Sills, in particular, occur throughout the Sverdrup Basin and crop out extensively on Axel Heiberg Island within Triassic to Cretaceous strata. The HALIP event is dominantly intrusive, with 3-5 times more intrusive rocks than extrusive rocks, by volume. There is local evidence of syn-emplacement fault activity, possibly involving the reactivation of older faults, controlling the emplacement of dykes. In the eastern Sverdrup Basin, exposures of components of the HALIP are controlled by tectonic elements of the Eocene Eurekan Orogeny, with plumbing systems (dykes, sills) exposed along regional-scale anticlines or the hanging walls of thrusts. Portions of the HALIP have been shown to be prospective for magmatic Ni - Cu - platinum group elements (PGEs) based on geochemistry, and although geochemical controls play a critical role in the genesis of such deposits, structural and magma dynamic controls are also important to consider at the scale of 1-10 km magmatic complexes. Underpinned by the architecture of the Canadian HALIP, we document the structural characteristics of three 1-10 km-scale volcanic-intrusive complexes of the province that show Ni-Cu-PGE prospectivity: the volcanic-intrusive complex of the Strand Fiord - Expedition Fiord area, the Surprise Fiord dykes, and the Wootton Intrusive Complex. All three represent physico-structural environments that would likely promote high magma flowthrough and sulphide transport, and could be targeted for Ni-Cu-PGE magmatic sulphide mineralization. Middle to Upper Devonian Horn River strata in British Columbia, western Canada, has become a proven province of commercial shale gas resource in the last few years. The shale gas resource potential in the Horn River Basin has been historically assessed based on reservoir volumetric characteristics. However, as fundamental mechanisms controlling shale gas ultimate recovery remain poorly understood, the classic theories and simulation techniques applied to evaluate recoverable gas for conventional reservoir have proven inadequate for shale gas reservoirs. Determining the ultimate recovery from production data at the well level and projecting these data to the basin level to establish the ultimate recoverable resource may provide a more realistic estimation for long-term sustainable development planning. This paper analyzes well performance of 206 wells using Arps and Valko models in the Horn River Basin with adequately protracted production records and projects these performances to the future to assess the ultimate recovery of shale gas resource. This process yields a mean estimate of recoverable methane gas resource of 114 TCF (1 TCF (trillion cubic feet) = 28.3 × 109 m3), with a large uncertainty range of 38-217 TCF (90%-10% confidence interval). This study also suggests that the drastic variation in estimated ultimate recovery (EUR) from wells across the basin is attributed primarily to the intrinsic geological character of the shale reservoir, though advances in technology and industry practice may also contribute in some degree to this variation. Cimolestes Marsh is a North American eutherian mammal primarily known from latest Cretaceous deposits in Alberta, Wyoming, Saskatchewan, and Montana. At present, five species of Cimolestes are considered valid, all Lancian in age; they include one of the largest North American Late Cretaceous therian mammals as well as one of the smallest, a size range far exceeding that within other genera of tribosphenic therians contemporary with Cimolestes, such as the leptictoid eutherian Gypsonictops Simpson or genera of alphadontid or pediomyid marsupials. Moreover, the species of Cimolestes display a disparity of dental morphology in addition to size well in excess of interspecific differences within these genera. Given these considerations, Cimolestes is clearly a grade-taxon, uniting species sharing an adaptively subzalambdodont dentition, but showing divergent specializations within this pattern that are inconsistent with monophyly of its presently included species. To correct these imbalances, this paper limits Cimolestes to Cimolestes incisus Marsh and Cimolestes stirtoni Clemens; Cimolestes magnus Clemens and Russell, Cimolestes cerberoides Lillegraven, and Cimolestes propalaeoryctes Lillegraven are reclassified in the new genera Altacreodus, Ambilestes, and Scollardius, respectively. Altacreodus magnus, having a massive shearing dentition, is reconfirmed as showing a relationship to some Tertiary 'creodonts' not shared by other species of Lancian cimolestids; Ambilestes cerberoides exhibits a distinctive molar wear pattern that emphasized horizontal grinding, not orthal shear; Scollardius propalaeoryctes, the smallest species in this revision and having hyper-faunivorous molars, was not ancestral to Paleogene Palaeoryctidae, as indicated in part by contradictions in premolar number and morphology. The erosional impacts of former ice sheets on the low-relief bedrock surfaces of Northern Hemisphere shields are not well understood. This paper assesses the variable impacts of glacial erosion on a portion of Baffin Island, eastern Canadian Arctic, between 68° and 72°N and 66° and 80°W. This tilted shield block was covered repeatedly by the Laurentide Ice Sheet during the late Cenozoic. The impact of ice-sheet erosion is examined with GIS analyses using two geomorphic parameters: lake density and terrain ruggedness. The resulting patterns generally conform to published data from other remote sensing studies, geological observations, cosmogenic exposure ages, and the distribution of the chemical index of alteration for tills. Lake density and terrain ruggedness are thereby demonstrated to be useful quantitative indicators of variable ice-sheet erosional impacts across Baffin Island. Ice-sheet erosion was most effective in the lower western parts of the lowlands, in a west-east-oriented band at around 350-400 m a.s.l., and in fjord-onset zones in the uplifted eastern region. Above the 350-400 m a.s.l. band and between the fjord-onset zones, ice-sheet erosion was not sufficient to create extensive ice-roughened or streamlined bedrock surfaces. The exception - where lake density and terrain ruggedness indicate that ice-sheet erosion had a scouring effect all across the study area - was in an area from Foxe Basin to Home Bay with elevations <400 m a.s.l. These morphological contrasts link to former ice-sheet basal thermal regimes during the Pleistocene. The zone of low glacial erosion surrounding the cold-based Barnes Ice Cap probably represents the ice cap's greater extent during successive Pleistocene cold stages. Inter-fjord plateaus with few ice-sheet bedforms remained cold-based throughout multiple Pleistocene glaciations. In contrast, zones of high lake density and high terrain ruggedness are a result of the repeated development of fast-flowing, erosive ice in warm-based zones beneath the Laurentide Ice Sheet. These zones are linked to greater ice thickness over western lowland Baffin Island. However, adjacent lowland surfaces with similar elevations of non-eroded, weakly eroded, and ice-scoured shield bedrock indicate that-even in areas of high lake density and terrain ruggedness-the total depth of ice sheet erosion did not exceed 50 m. Large-scale lateral mobility of the Earth's lithosphere (mobilism) was a hotly debated issue in Earth Sciences during some two decades following publication of Wegener's (1912) theory of continental displacement. The final acceptance of lithospheric mobility was brought about with the plate tectonics revolution during the late 1960s. Support for mobilism was rather popular in certain European countries during the 1920s, whereas the reactions in North America were mostly hostile. One of the very few influential mobilists in the New World was Reginald Aldworth Daly of Harvard University. The present paper discusses his model of continental displacement which is very remarkable in many aspects. We focus on the hitherto neglected fact that Daly proposed in the mid-1920s a mechanism to create oceanic crust which would have been totally consistent with the Vine-Matthews hypothesis of seafloor generation published in 1963. It is furthermore suggested that Daly's geotectonic proposals were inspired by small-scale analogues of lava flows and multiple dike swarms he observed on Atlantic islands such as St. Helena and Ascension. His model to account for the construction of new oceanic crust is reminiscent of the models of Vine and Moores (1972) and Cann (1970) which eventually led to the 'Penrose-definition' of ophiolites in 1972. As these scientists arrived at their conclusions absolutely independently of Daly, this episode is an instructive example of a multiple or repeated discovery in the Earth Sciences which renders it difficult to believe certain theories of science which assume scientific models to depend mostly on social factors. The Frenchman and Ravenscrag formations of southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada, record an apparently continuous sequence of nonmarine clastic sediments across the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary. Extensive exposures of these fossil-rich sediments occur in the Frenchman River Valley, near the towns of Ravenscrag, Eastend, and Shaunavon, and have been a focus of study since the 1970s. Despite this long history of investigation, a comprehensive account of the geographic and stratigraphic positions of many of the significant fossil localities has yet to be published. Given this state of affairs, the goals of this paper are to ( i) document the geographic locations, stratigraphic positions, and lithologies of 11 key vertebrate microfossil localities, including several new localities that have been recently discovered, and ( ii) provide an update on the status of these fossil localities, the majority of which have not been sampled in the last 20 years. Four fossil localities are known from the lower Paleocene Ravenscrag Formation, all of which are Puercan in age: Rav W-1 (Pu2), French Fry (Pu1), Croc Pot (?Pu2), and Pine Cree (?Pu2). With the exception of Rav W-1, which has since been lost as a consequence of quarry reclamation, all of the Ravenscrag Formation localities remain accessible and continue to be productive. Seven vertebrate microfossil localities from the upper Maastrichtian Frenchman Formation are reported here, all of which are Lancian in age: Long Fall, Fr-1, By Gar Gap, Hairpin, Wounded Knee, Wounded C, and Gryde. With the exception of Long Fall and Wounded Knee, which have been lost through reclamation or construction, all of the Frenchman Formation localities are accessible and remain productive. The paper presents a geographical information system (GIS)-based method for depicting the characteristics, particularly the internal structures and evolutionary processes, of mesoscale eddies. This was done by examining topologic relations among closed sea surface height (SSH) contours that were reconstructed from the Naval Research Laboratory Navy layered ocean model (NLOM). Different scenarios of the topological relations among the contour lines permitted the identification of the outermost outline of eddies and the depiction of the number of cores in each mesoscale oceanic eddy. With full consideration of the internal structure of the eddies, we then reconstructed the evolutionary processes of these eddies, and the results were compared with empirical observations on three long-lived mesoscale eddies in the northern South China Sea (SCS). Tracking results were similar, thereby validating our method as being efficient and robust in reconstructing mesoscale ocean eddies, especially their evolutionary processes based on their internal structures. Nonglacial deposits of Middle Wisconsin age are being discovered with increased frequency across a broad region of southern Ontario, Canada, and provide strong evidence for a time of significant ice withdrawal from the lower Great Lakes region. With each new discovery, a refined understanding of regional climatic and paleoecological environments is emerging. In this paper, we present the results of a sedimentological and paleoecological study of a subtill organic deposit in Zorra Township, southwestern Ontario. The organic deposit, which lies beneath Nissouri Phase Catfish Creek Till (Late Wisconsin), has been dated by accelerator mass spectrometry at between 50.5 and 42.9 14C ka BP. The organic remains are contained within slack water pond deposits infilling a channel incised into till either of Early Wisconsin or Illinoian age. The fossil assemblage appears to be strongly influenced by taphonomic processes, including degradation due to oxidation, bacterial and fungal decay, and glacial overriding. Reworking and (or) recycling and selective sorting as well as long-distance transport has also influenced the composition of the fossil assemblage preserved. Nonetheless, meaningful paleoecological information is still obtained from this record. Collectively, the pollen and plant macrofossils indicate a boreal-type pine-spruce forest with temperatures cooler than present. The absence of arctic tundra plants, as are found in many other deposits of similar age in the lower Great Lakes basin, is notable. A pond or wetland inhabited by shoreline herbs, shrubs, and trees was present at or proximal to the site. The freshwater mollusc and ostracode assemblages are consistent with a shallow water habitat with dense submerged vegetation. The terrestrial mollusc assemblage suggests a taiga or transitional taiga-tundra fauna. Together, these fossil groups provide one of the most comprehensive environmental reconstructions of Middle Wisconsin time (oxygen isotope stage 3 or OIS3) in southern Ontario and serve to build on the ever-increasing database of paleoecological information accumulating for this episode of the late Quaternary. The Kamouraska Formation is a quartz-arenitic unit of latest Cambrian - earliest Ordovician age in the Quebec Appalachians that was deposited by hyperconcentrated to concentrated density flows in a meandering submarine canyon on the continental slope bordering the Iapetus Ocean, as outlined in a companion paper. Detailed petrographic study of the quartz arenites of the Kamouraska Formation combined with scanning electron microscopy of grain surface textures suggests that the quartz sands are of eolian origin having been derived from an inland desert or, less likely, a barrier beach dune system. Transport of the mature quartz-arenitic sand onto the shelf and deposition into the deep sea was not accompanied by substantial mixing with material from other sources thus preserving the inherited eolian characteristics. A modern analogue for the eolian interpretation of the deep-sea quartz-arenite beds is as follows: thick, Late Pleistocene eolian sand beds on a modern abyssal plain in the East Atlantic referred to as eolian-sand turbidites that were deposited in the deep sea during glacial sea level lowstands when eolian sand transport to canyon heads was enabled by an exposed and shortened shelf. Similarly, an established sea level lowstand at the Cambro-Ordovician boundary would have facilitated the introduction of eolian sand of the Kamouraska Foundation into canyon heads on the upper slope from where turbidity currents and related density flows were triggered. Correlation of the Kamouraska Formation with the quartz arenites of the Cairnside Formation of Quebec (Keeseville Formation in northern New York State, Nepean Formation in southern Ontario) links the deep-sea deposits with remnants of an inland dune system. The greenstone belts along the northern margin of the Wawa subprovince of the Superior Province (Vermilion, Shebandowan, Winston Lake, Manitouwadge) formed at ca. 2720 Ma and have been interpreted to be representative of a rifted-arc to back-arc tectonic setting. Despite a common inferred tectonic setting and broad similarities, these greenstone belts have a significantly different metallogeny as evidenced by different endowments in volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS), magmatic sulphide, and orogenic gold deposits. In this paper, we examine differences in geodynamic setting and crustal architecture as they pertain to the metallogeny of each greenstone belt by characterizing the regional-scale trace-element and isotopic (Nd and Pb) geochemistry of each belt. The trace-element geochemistry of the Vermilion greenstone belt (VGB) shows evidence for a transition from arc-like to back-arc mafic rocks in the Soudan belt to plume-driven rifted arcs in the ultramafic-bearing Newton belt. The Shebandowan greenstone belt (SGB) has a significant proportion of calc-alkalic, arc-like basalts, intermediate lithofacies, and high-Mg andesites, which are characteristic of low-angle, 'hot' subduction. Extensional settings within the SGB are plume-driven and associated with komatiitic ultramafic and mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB)-like basalts. The Winston Lake greenstone belt (WGB) is characterized by a transition from calc-alkalic, arc-like basalts to back-arc basalts upward in the strata and is capped by alkalic ocean-island basalt (OIB)-like basalts. This association is consistent with plume-driven rifting of a mature arc setting. Each of the VGB, SGB, and WGB show some isotopic evidence for the interaction with a juvenile or slightly older differentiated crust. The Manitouwadge greenstone belt (MGB) is characterized by isotopically juvenile, bimodal, tholeiitic to transitional volcanic lithofacies in a back-arc setting. The MGB is the most isotopically juvenile belt and is also the most productive in terms of VMS mineralization. The Zn-rich VMS mineralization within the WGB suggests a relatively lower-temperature hydrothermal system, possibly within a relatively shallow-water environment. The Zn-dominated and locally Au-enriched VMS mineralization, as well as mafic lithofacies and alteration assemblages, are characteristic of relatively shallower-water deposition in the VGB and SGB, and indicate that the ideal VMS-forming tectonic condition may have been compromised by a shallower-water depositional setting. However, the thickened arc crust and compressional tectonics of the SGB suprasubduction zone during hot subduction may have provided a crustal setting more favourable for the magmatic Ni-Cu sulphide and relative gold endowment of this belt. Government geological survey maps and research publications have portrayed the distribution of glacial landforms associated with the advance and retreat of the Laurentide and Cordilleran ice sheets across Alberta at a local, regional, and continental scale. To date, this information has not been systematically synthesized into a single compilation at a consistent scale. Although this original work provided valuable information to constrain reconstructions of former ice sheet extent, configuration, and flow geometry, its derivation primarily from the interpretation of aerial photographs and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission 90 m digital elevation model (DEM) may result in methodological inconsistencies and spatial biases. These biases, together with challenges associated with geomorphic mapping in densely forested areas of western and northern Alberta limit the usefulness of previous mapping when applied to inversion-based ice sheet reconstructions, which have specific input data demands. Recently, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) DEMs have become increasingly available throughout Alberta. Hill-shaded imagery of these data provides unprecedented geomorphic detail beneath the forest cover and reveals that that the glacial geomorphology of northern and western Alberta is more complex than previously recognized. In this paper, we describe the methodology and geomorphic criteria used to produce a glacial landform map of Alberta using previously published data, supplemented by comprehensive new analysis of high-resolution (2-25 m) DEMs. These include 306 624 km2 of LiDAR imagery, with which it is now possible to verify and where necessary augment previous mapping, particularly across areas with a dense forest cover. The Danek Bonebed (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) is a monodominant Edmontosaurus regalis assemblage of the upper Campanian (Upper Cretaceous) Horseshoe Canyon Formation. Bone histology of humeri and femora are used in this paper to test hypotheses about the growth dynamics and palaeobiology of Edmontosaurus. The high number of elements collected from the Danek Bonebed allow for an expansion of the multi-element histological record for hadrosaurs. Results indicate that Edmontosaurus had a growth trajectory similar to other large-bodied dinosaurs and reached the onset of somatic maturity at about 10-15 years of age; however, even the largest elements to preserve lines of arrested growth do not have external fundamental systems. This timing of the onset of somatic maturity agrees with the estimated body size of Edmontosaurus relative to other dinosaurs for which life-history data are available. Vascularity patterns support the hypothesis that edmontosaurs preserved at the Danek Bonebed were not subject to the same extreme seasonal environmental shifts as congenerics preserved at higher latitudes, further supporting overwintering behaviour in the latter. The exposures at the St. Marys Cement Inc. quarry at St. Marys, Ontario, have been studied by geologists since the mid-1950s. This paper summarizes previous and new information collected in 2009, 2010, and 2012 and discusses the record of sediments resting on the bedrock surface that have been exposed during quarry operations. The exposed sediments illustrate the dynamic behavior of the Laurentide Ice Sheet in this area during the Late Wisconsin. Evidence for subglacial meltwater activity, shifting ice-flow directions during till deposition, a local or regional erosion event, possible subaerial exposure, and ice-marginal sedimentation is observed in the sequence of tills and stratified sediments exposed in the quarries. It also highlights how rapid lateral facies changes, complex contact relationships, and steep erosional contacts can prove to be challenging for correlation and extrapolation of subsurface units into three-dimensional stratigraphic models. Fourteen units were identified of which the lower six were deposited during the Nissouri age (Catfish Creek Drift). This included five layers of till deposited by a glacier that alternated from flowing out of the Lake Huron basin to that of a regional flow to the south-southwest. An angular unconformity cuts into these sediments and separates them from a finer-grained sediment sequence (primarily of Port Bruce age) consisting of glaciofluvial gravel, two fine-textured till layers, and rhythmically bedded glaciolacustrine sediments, all overlain by the uppermost till, the Rannoch Till, and Mitchell Moraine ice-marginal fan sediments. A bear third metatarsal was discovered in Champlain Sea deposits at the Saint-Nicolas site, Quebec. It is identified morphologically probably as a brown bear ( Ursus arctos) based on the combination of morphology and ancient DNA. It is the first evidence of bears from Champlain Sea deposits. This bone was radiocarbon dated by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) to 9880 ± 35 BP (radiocarbon years BP, taken as 1950) - close to the end of the Champlain Sea phase in eastern North America. The specimen is considered in relation to other North American Quaternary brown bear remains, the dispersal history of the species, and the known Champlain Sea fauna from Saint-Nicolas, as well as stratigraphy at the site and paleoenvironment. This paper presents results of a passive-source seismic mapping study in the Nechako-Chilcotin plateau of central British Columbia, with the ultimate goal of contributing to assessments of hydrocarbon and mineral potential of the region. For the present study, an array of nine seismic stations was deployed in 2006-2007 to sample a wide area of the Nechako-Chilcotin plateau. The specific goal was to map the thickness of the sediments and volcanic cover, and the overall crustal thickness and structural geometry beneath the study area. This study utilizes recordings of about 40 distant earthquakes from 2006 to 2008 to calculate receiver functions, and constructs S-wave velocity models for each station using the Neighbourhood Algorithm inversion. The surface sediments are found to range in thickness from about 0.8 to 2.7 km, and the underlying volcanic layer from 1.8 to 4.7 km. Both sediments and volcanic cover are thickest in the central portion of the study area. The crustal thickness ranges from 22 to 36 km, with an average crustal thickness of about 30-34 km. A consistent feature observed in this study is a low-velocity zone at the base of the crust. This study complements other recent studies in this area, including active-source seismic studies and magnetotelluric measurements, by providing site-specific images of the crustal structure down to the Moho and detailed constraints on the S-wave velocity structure. John Tuzo Wilson coined the term 'plate' in plate tectonics. He is famous for inventing transform boundaries, hot spot tracks, and the Wilson cycle of ocean birth, growth, and decline. Less well remembered is his work in the 1950s on tectonic and radiometric age provinces of the Canadian Shield, as part of which he fathered U/Pb geochronology in Canada. This work gave strong support to the notion of continental growth through accretion of successively younger terranes onto an ancient cratonic core. The present paper reviews how paleomagnetism can trace the motions of continents to test Wilson's ideas. Continental accretion often involves deep burial of one of the colliding elements through subduction or crustal underplating; such was the case with the Grenville orogen and its subprovinces in their Proterozoic accretion onto the Laurentian craton. The resulting heating and metamorphism erases most pre-collisional magnetic information but adds something new: the possibility of following the post-metamorphic uplift and cooling history, in time and space. The time element is provided by a new form of isotopic geochronology, thermochronometry, which provides dates for specific minerals together with the temperatures at which they became closed to isotopic migration. U/Pb dating of sphene is one method used; another is the 40Ar/39Ar variant of K/Ar dating applied to hornblende, micas, and feldspars, which have a wide range of Ar closure temperatures. The two specific Grenville studies described deal with parallel uplift histories determined by 40Ar/39Ar dating and by magnetics for the accreted terranes of the Central Metasedimentary Belt in Ontario and with the paleomagnetic detection of the post-1240 Ma closing of a small ocean between the Elsevir terrane and Laurentia during the Grenvillian orogeny. John Tuzo Wilson (1908-1993) was one of the greatest Canadian scientists of the 20th century. His contributions to Earth Sciences, leading the formulation of the theory of plate tectonics, have revolutionized our understanding of how the planet Earth works and evolved over the past 4 billion years. This 50th anniversary special issue of the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences is dedicated in honour of John Tuzo Wilson, who inspired tens of thousands of students all around the world to study the Earth. This special issue contains 12 papers dealing with various aspects of the 'Wilson Cycle' in the geologic record, plate tectonics, mantle plumes, and how John Tuzo Wilson accepted 'continental drift' and formulated the theory of plate tectonics. The contributions have mostly been made by geoscientists who directly or indirectly associated with John Tuzo Wilson and have contributed significantly to the plate tectonics paradigm. Terraces in the lower Matane River Valley (eastern Quebec, Canada) were studied to describe the stratigraphic architecture of a glacially eroded valley fill. The Matane River Valley hosted a glacial tongue connected with a regional ice cap during the early opening of a calving bay in the modern St. Lawrence Estuary and was subsequently flooded by the Goldthwait Sea as the Laurentide Ice Sheet margin retreated. Stratigraphic, sedimentological, light detection and ranging (LIDAR), and geochemical analyses as well as radiocarbon measurements allowed the identification of four stratigraphic units deposited during and following deglaciation: glacial outwash (unit I), delta bottomsets (unit II), delta foresets (unit III), and fluvial deposits (unit IV). Stable isotope (13C) and C/N ratio values reveal the relative influence of the two end-members (algae and terrestrial plants) on organic matter sources between the stratigraphic units. Climate, major relative sea level fluctuations, and sediment yield are recognized as the main controls on depositional environments in glacially eroded valleys of the northern shore of the Gaspé Peninsula during the Holocene. This paper summarizes various lines of evidence, including new geophysical and geochemical surveys indicating the discharge of naturally occurring saline formation water from Cretaceous and Devonian formations to the Athabasca River downstream of Fort McMurray - an active oil sands extraction area. The following features are indicative of saline water discharge: ( i) the hydrogeological setting of the reach which is situated near the western, up-dip, and subcropping, edge of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin; ( ii) springs and seepage along area rivers and tributaries that have been observed and reported in previous studies; and ( iii) a significant increase in dissolved solids in the river, particularly chloride, occurring in a downstream direction from Fort McMurray. Further evidence of the saline groundwater discharge was obtained from electromagnetic surveys conducted along a 125 km reach from the Clearwater River to the Firebag River. This technique was used to map the distribution of saline water in the riverbed hyporheic zone, and revealed broad zones of generally high terrain electrical conductivity values in deeply incised Cretaceous- and Devonian-aged subcrop areas, but with numerous point-source and lineal anomalies attributed to occurrence of saline water discharge in less incised areas. Porewater sampling using drive-point piezometers was then used to confirm the presence of saline water in selected zones. Depth-wise gradients in chemical parameters observed in the riverbed porewaters in these zones are interpreted as evidence of upward movement of saline formation water mixing with the Athabasca River. Geochemical properties of the porewater are consistent with natural sources of groundwater flow from the Cretaceous- and Devonian-aged formations discharging along various reaches of the river. Major hydrocarbon and groundwater reservoirs are commonly hosted within coarse-grained alluvial deposits that contain a high degree of sedimentary heterogeneity. This paper presents a detailed characterization of the sedimentary heterogeneity of fluvial-deltaic deposits using architectural element analysis (AEA). Sedimentological data collected from outcrop faces exposing Late Quaternary glaciofluvial deposits in southern Ontario, Canada, is recorded in 31 sedimentary logs. These logs are used to identify nine different facies types, including gravel facies (Gm, Gp, Gt), sand facies (Sr, Sp, St, Ss), and fine-grained facies (Fl and Fd). Variations in facies associations and geometries are defined by five architectural elements (AEs): sand complex (SC), gravel sheet (GS), fine-grained sheet (FS), gravel foreset body (GFB), and concave fill (CF) elements. The spatial arrangement of bounding surfaces (first- to fifth-order) and AEs allows the classification of six EAs, which, in this study, are defined as the largest-scale architectural subunits that allow for architectural-based mapping over a large area. EAs delineated in this study are sandy braided-river (EA1), delta-front (EA2), gravelly braided-river to delta-top (EA3), delta-front to lacustrine (EA4), braided-river to deltaic (EA5), and sand-dominated fluvial (EA6). AEA is utilized here to capture three levels of heterogeneity, which allow detailed reservoir characterization based on geometric objects and can be readily used for computer-based modelling. Outcrop analogue studies such as this one provide insight to the geometries of more deeply buried coarse-grained deposits that form potential reservoirs and enhance paleoenvironmental reconstruction of subsurface alluvial deposits in Canada and elsewhere. This Special volume published by the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences consists of a collection of six papers on the petrology, geochemistry, and metallogeny of igneous rocks emplaced in large igneous provinces (LIPs). The papers provide a snapshot of results presented at a Special Session of the 2017 Geological Association of Canada – Mineral Association of Canada Joint Annual Meeting held in Kingston, Ontario, by members of the vibrant geoscience community dedicated to the study of LIPs. Participants applauded the idea of a joint session on these topics and as a result, the session fostered animated discussions and new collaborations. The scope of magmatic and metallogenic studies of LIPs often precludes the type of brainstorming that took place during the meeting. This Special volume demonstrates that a robust understanding of magmatic processes represents the essential first step towards the search for mineral deposits in LIPs worldwide. This paper provides a re-interpretation of the crustal architecture of the Ottawan hinterland of the Grenville Province in light of published empirical and numerical models of orogenic collapse. It is now seen as a series of high-grade, mid-crustal core complexes from tens to hundreds of kilometres across that are juxtaposed against segments of the lower grade upper and uppermost crust including the orogenic lid. Juxtaposition of such contrasting crustal levels, which exhibit decoupled tectonic styles corresponding to the orogenic infrastructure and suprastructure, respectively, is interpreted as a signature of the foundering of an orogenic plateau into a mid-crustal channel. Ottawan metamorphism progressed from granulite-facies in the mid crust at ∼1090-1050 Ma, through amphibolite-facies in the upper crust at ∼1050-1020 Ma, to heating to ≤500 °C in the uppermost crust at ∼1020-980 Ma. This temporal progression is interpreted to reflect conductive heat transfer during collapse, as hot mid-crustal core complexes were exhumed against successively higher crustal levels. Exhumation was facilitated by substantial thinning and lengthening of the mid crust by simple- and pure-shear mechanisms. This was accompanied by wholesale boudinage of the brittle uppermost crust. Moreover, it may have resulted in excision of part of the ductile upper crust, which appears under-represented. Collapse was accompanied by diverse magmatic and hydrothermal products, their range of structural states implying that high-strain Ottawan deformation in the mid crust took place beneath an orogenic lid that was not penetratively deformed. Preliminary analysis indicates the Grenvillian inliers exhibit a comparable range of crustal levels to the Grenville Province, suggesting the orogenic plateau may have extended ∼5000 km along strike from Labrador to Texas. Mineral and petroleum exploration in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region of British Columbia is hampered by widespread and extensive cover of Pleistocene glacial deposits and Tertiary volcanic successions. Seeing through this geological cover is critical to reducing exploration risk and enhancing exploration activity. Also critical to exploration is effective community engagement, hopefully resulting in endorsement and support for exploration initiatives. The forests in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region have been extensively destroyed by an infestation of the mountain pine beetle, , disrupting established communities and greatly affecting economic activity in the region. Governments of all levels recognized that geological exploration activity could provide a ready and appreciable stimulus to economic activity, but only if local communities endorsed such programs. Relatively little oil and gas exploration and research has taken place in the region, and its effects have been poorly understood locally. Consequently, an extended effort was undertaken to establish an integrated geoscience program for the Cariboo-Chilcotin region, focused on mineral and petroleum exploration-related research and coupled with engagement with local communities to inform them of exploration benefits and risks. The south-central Intermontane belt of British Columbia has a complex architecture comprising late Paleozoic to Mesozoic volcanic and plutonic arc magmatic suites, marine and nonmarine clastic basins, high-grade metamorphic complexes, and accretionary rocks. Jurassic and Cretaceous clastic basins within this framework contain stratigraphy with hydrocarbon potential. The geology is complicated by Cretaceous to Eocene deformation, dismemberment, and dislocation. The Eocene to Neogene history of the southern Intermontane belt is dominated by non-arc volcanism, followed by Pleistocene to Recent glaciation. The volcanic and glacial cover makes this a difficult region to explore for resources. Much recent work has involved re-evaluating the challenges that the overlying volcanic cover has historically presented to geophysical imaging of the sedimentary rocks in this region in light of technological advances in geophysical data collection and analysis. This paper summarizes the lithological and stratigraphic framework of the region, with emphasis on description of the sedimentary units that have been the targets of hydrocarbon exploration. The Archean Blake River Group (BRG) of Ontario and Quebec is dominated by submarine mafic to intermediate lavas, with more restricted felsic volcanic rocks. Given the good quality of outcrop, and high level of preservation of some BRG rocks, the mafic to intermediate lavas were used in the 1970s and 1980s to better understand the evolution of massive and pillowed submarine flows, and their associated fragmental facies (pillow breccias, hyaloclastite). Potentially, the BRG could also represent a useful volcanic succession for the study of explosive submarine eruption products in the ancient record. Before this is possible, however, a regional inventory of the mafic to intermediate volcaniclastic units is needed to clarify their characteristics and origins. In this paper, we compare and contrast volcaniclastic rocks from three areas within the same formation of the northern BRG in Quebec: the Monsabrais area, the Lac Duparquet area, and the D'Alembert tuff area. Close examination reveals pronounced differences in terms of lateral continuity, thickness, grading, bedding, clast shapes, textures, etc. in the volcaniclastic rocks. These differences are interpreted to reflect vastly different emplacement processes, ranging from hyaloclastite generation as a result of self-fragmentation and lava contact with water (dominant in the Monsabrais and Lac Duparquet areas) to aqueous density currents likely fed directly by explosive submarine eruptions (dominant in the D'Alembert tuff). In the Archean Blake River Group, mafic to intermediate fragmental units have controversially been proposed to have formed during the collapse of a giant submarine caldera. This paper describes and interprets these rocks, summarizing their physical characteristics, inferred origins, age relationships, and geochemical signatures. The widespread Stadacona member, south of Rouyn-Noranda, consists of several hundred metres of bedded volcaniclastic rocks interpreted to have been mostly deposited from aqueous density currents fed directly by explosive eruptions. The magmas involved in these eruptions were plagioclase-phyric, tholeiitic to transitional basalts. The similarly widespread D'Alembert tuff, in the northern part of the Blake River Group, shares many physical characteristics with the Stadacona member and is thought to have a similar origin. However, the D'Alembert tuff is approximately six million years younger than the Stadacona member. It is composed mostly of transitional to calc-alkaline andesites and basaltic andesites with very distinct trace element profiles. Volcaniclastic rocks from other areas, such as Tannahill Township in Ontario and the Monsabrais area in Quebec, are interpreted to represent mostly in situ to remobilized hyaloclastite, with no explosive eruptions involved in their genesis. Our observations and interpretations are not compatible with models in which the volcaniclastic units are emplaced during a catastrophic event in relation with the collapse of a giant caldera. The Thompson Nickel Belt marks the boundary between the Archean Superior Province and the Trans-Hudson Orogen in Canada. It comprises Archean gneisses, and Paleoproterozoic rocks with metasediments and metavolcanites (Ospwagan Group) and intrusions. The gneisses are frequently migmatitic and host numerous pegmatites. The western belt boundary is a fault contact with the Kisseynew Domain of the Reindeer Zone. In the south, the transition zone between the belt and the Kisseynew Domain comprises granitoids and a detrital sequence (Grass River Group), part of which grades into turbidites in the Kisseynew Domain. The eastern belt boundary is a diffuse zone where the Archean east-west (E-W) structural trend changes into the north-northeast (NNE) trend of the belt. This paper presents U-Pb ages for granitoids and 207Pb/206Pb detrital zircon ages from the Ospwagan and Grass River groups. Ages and a comparison of events in the belt and in the eastern Reindeer Zone have major implications. The change from stable platform deposits to syn-tectonic filling and emplacement of mafic intrusions in the Ospwagan Group are attributed to the convergence between the Reindeer Zone and the Superior Province at 1891-1885 Ma. At ca. 1850 Ma, continuing convergence led to drowning of marginal basins of the Superior craton and to the development of a transpressive regime in the belt, the onset of which could be as old as ca. 1885 Ma. Metamorphic ages of 1818-1785 record closure of the Kisseynew basin and crustal thickening. Collision of the new continental block with the Superior Province was accommodated by transpression until 1750-1720 Ma. Mixodectidae (Mammalia, Archonta) are an unusual, poorly known family of dermopteran-like mammals that have been discovered at several North American localities of primarily early Paleocene age. Among the three or four recognized mixodectid genera, Eudaemonema Simpson is perhaps one of the least understood, being known from only a few localities of late Torrejonian and earliest Tiffanian age. This paper reports on a new species of Eudaemonema from the late Paleocene of Alberta, Canada, that significantly extends the geographic and stratigraphic ranges of the genus. Eudaemonema webbi sp. nov. is known from middle and late Tiffanian localities in central and south central Alberta, and it represents the youngest and northernmost species of Eudaemonema so far discovered. E. webbi differs from the genotypic species E. cuspidata in being larger and in having a suite of dental characters (e.g., molariform posterior premolars, enlarged molar protocone and hypocone, development of a second grinding platform on the lower molars) that suggests an increased emphasis on grinding during mastication. E. webbi possesses several dental features (e.g., broad, shelf-like molar paraconid-paracristid, lingually shifted molar hypoconulid) that resemble those of cynocephalids (Mammalia, Dermoptera), with these resemblances interpreted herein as convergent. The occurrence of E. webbi at Gao Mine extends the stratigraphic range of Eudaemonema into the late Tiffanian (Ti5) and represents the youngest known record of Mixodectidae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A giant short-faced bear (Arctodus simus) ulna fragment was found at the base of exposed Quaternary sediments at Cowichan Head, southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia. In this paper, the ulna fragment and its geological context are described and a reasonable taphonomic trajectory is presented. The radiocarbon age of 22 750 ±140 BP on the bone indicates that these bears were on Vancouver Island during the late Wisconsinan. Groundwater plays a major role in social and economic development and in human and ecosystem health. However, little is known about the potential impacts of climate change on this resource in Canada, namely if groundwater recharge is increasing or decreasing over time. This paper focuses on trend statistical analysis of historical series of baseflow and groundwater levels and their field significance as indicators of recharge. Monitoring wells are mainly located in the southern half of western Canada, where few gauging stations either are available or provide significant trends. Both data sets are thus complementary. Results show that most available groundwater level series have significant trends (80%), whereas most available baseflow series have not (3%–33%). However, groundwater level series usually show smaller slope magnitudes than baseflow series. Mixed trends are often observed across Canada for a given variable, period, or series length, although some regions can have marked trends. For instance, values below the 55°N latitude, and especially values in Atlantic Canada, show mostly downward trends (decreasing recharge). Values north of the 55° parallel often show upward trends. All groundwater level results are field significant at the 10% level, versus only 35% for baseflow results, but they show mixed results. Baseflow values show a majority of downward trends for annual values and the summer period for 40- and 50-year series, thus showing field significance, whereas mixed results are observed for 30-year series and the spring, fall, and winter seasons. We describe and present preliminary results from an independent bending-angle algorithm implementation for the calculation of radiowave bending angles propagated from a Global Positioning System (GPS) to a Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellite. The algorithm utilizes raw atmospheric excess phases and satellite kinematics to determine Doppler frequency shifts of the GPS signals from which bending-angle profiles are derived. The intent is twofold: (a) perform a series of sensitivity studies to investigate the effect of Doppler frequency shift and satellite velocity variations on bending-angle profiles; and (b) examine and compare our results against the bending-angle profiles provided by the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere & Climate (COSMIC) Data Analysis and Archive Centre (CDAAC). In this paper, we employ the same GPS observations as by CDAAC to analyze various occultation events in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. Our principal finding is that radiowave bending angles exhibit an inversely proportional behaviour to orbital velocity variations while they change proportionally to the variations of Doppler frequency shift. Our studies also reveal that bending angles are more sensitive to orbital velocity than to Doppler frequency shift variations and show “wave-like” structures in the upper part of the atmosphere, unlike COSMIC-derived profiles. We discuss the differences between our derived bending-angle profiles and the COSMIC-derived profiles, emphasizing the advantages of our algorithm implementation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In carrier-phase measurements, which are the most precise observations for Global Positioning System (GPS) relative positioning, multipath error is still a factor that interferes with achieving the desired accuracy. Various improvements in receiver and antenna technologies, as well as modeling strategies, have resulted in better ways of coping with this error source. However, errors caused by multipath can be as large as 5 cm, which is not an acceptable accuracy, especially in precise surveying applications like deformation monitoring. In this paper, a full assessment of different wavelets techniques that can be used in multipath mitigation is made to evaluate the optimum way of using wavelets to reduce or remove this type of error. Also, a new approach based on the wavelet detrending technique is introduced to remove carrier-phase multipath error in the measurement domain. To mitigate multipath, GPS double-difference observables are fed to an adaptive wavelet analysis procedure based on high- and low-pass filter decomposition with different levels of resolution. Consequently, the observable sequences are corrected; these corrected observables can then be used to reduce the ambiguity search volume during the initial float solution stage. Meanwhile, double-difference observations with multipath mitigation offer an efficient method for obtaining a better baseline solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper introduces a refined trend surface analysis (TSA) for detecting faults with small, metre-scale offsets (5–20 m). Conventional TSA uses a global polynomial method to model the trend; the power of the polynomial (e.g., first, second, or third order) is the only parameter for input. The refined approach is different in that it uses local-fit techniques to generate the trend. The refined approach provides greater flexibility for inputting geological knowledge in the trend surface modelling process. This results in a trend surface with the maximum amount of unwanted information, which is removed from the residual surface after removal of the trend from the data, leaving features of interest optimally highlighted in the residuals. Such a trend is referred to as a geologist-controlled trend to differentiate it from the trend surface modelled by conventional TSA, which is primarily a computer-controlled global polynomial surface. The refined approach goes one step beyond conventional TSA by incorporating advanced geostatistics for modelling the trend, interpolating the resultant residuals, and then extracting formation-top offset patterns from the residual surface using spatial analysis. Modelling the geologist-controlled trend in the refined approach results in higher resolution in detecting formation-top offsets and higher accuracy in digitizing fault locations, compared with various techniques that have been traditionally used in subsurface structure mapping of the West Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) (e.g., structural and isopach contour mapping, cross-section construction, and seismic and aeromagnetic data interpretation).
