This paper provides a re-interpretation of the crustal architecture of the Ottawan hinterland of the Grenville Province in light of published empirical and numerical models of orogenic collapse. It is now seen as a series of high-grade, mid-crustal core complexes from tens to hundreds of kilometres across that are juxtaposed against segments of the lower grade upper and uppermost crust including the orogenic lid. Juxtaposition of such contrasting crustal levels, which exhibit decoupled tectonic styles corresponding to the orogenic infrastructure and suprastructure, respectively, is interpreted as a signature of the foundering of an orogenic plateau into a mid-crustal channel. Ottawan metamorphism progressed from granulite-facies in the mid crust at ∼1090–1050 Ma, through amphibolite-facies in the upper crust at ∼1050–1020 Ma, to heating to ≤500 °C in the uppermost crust at ∼1020–980 Ma. This temporal progression is interpreted to reflect conductive heat transfer during collapse, as hot mid-crustal core complexes were exhumed against successively higher crustal levels. Exhumation was facilitated by substantial thinning and lengthening of the mid crust by simple- and pure-shear mechanisms. This was accompanied by wholesale boudinage of the brittle uppermost crust. Moreover, it may have resulted in excision of part of the ductile upper crust, which appears under-represented. Collapse was accompanied by diverse magmatic and hydrothermal products, their range of structural states implying that high-strain Ottawan deformation in the mid crust took place beneath an orogenic lid that was not penetratively deformed. Preliminary analysis indicates the Grenvillian inliers exhibit a comparable range of crustal levels to the Grenville Province, suggesting the orogenic plateau may have extended ∼5000 km along strike from Labrador to Texas.

The south-central Intermontane belt of British Columbia has a complex architecture comprising late Paleozoic to Mesozoic volcanic and plutonic arc magmatic suites, marine and nonmarine clastic basins, high-grade metamorphic complexes, and accretionary rocks. Jurassic and Cretaceous clastic basins within this framework contain stratigraphy with hydrocarbon potential. The geology is complicated by Cretaceous to Eocene deformation, dismemberment, and dislocation. The Eocene to Neogene history of the southern Intermontane belt is dominated by non-arc volcanism, followed by Pleistocene to Recent glaciation. The volcanic and glacial cover makes this a difficult region to explore for resources. Much recent work has involved re-evaluating the challenges that the overlying volcanic cover has historically presented to geophysical imaging of the sedimentary rocks in this region in light of technological advances in geophysical data collection and analysis. This paper summarizes the lithological and stratigraphic framework of the region, with emphasis on description of the sedimentary units that have been the targets of hydrocarbon exploration.

The Archean Blake River Group (BRG) of Ontario and Quebec is dominated by submarine mafic to intermediate lavas, with more restricted felsic volcanic rocks. Given the good quality of outcrop, and high level of preservation of some BRG rocks, the mafic to intermediate lavas were used in the 1970s and 1980s to better understand the evolution of massive and pillowed submarine flows, and their associated fragmental facies (pillow breccias, hyaloclastite). Potentially, the BRG could also represent a useful volcanic succession for the study of explosive submarine eruption products in the ancient record. Before this is possible, however, a regional inventory of the mafic to intermediate volcaniclastic units is needed in order to clarify their characteristics and origins. In this paper, we compare and contrast volcaniclastic rocks from three areas within the same formation of the northern BRG in Quebec: the Monsabrais area, the lac Duparquet area, and the D’Alembert tuff area. Close examination reveals pronounced differences in terms of lateral continuity, thickness, grading, bedding, clast shapes, textures, etc. in the volcaniclastic rocks. These differences are interpreted to reflect vastly different emplacement processes ranging from hyaloclastite generation as a result of self-fragmentation and lava contact with water (dominant in the Monsabrais and lac Duparquet areas) to aqueous density currents likely fed directly by explosive submarine eruptions (dominant in the D’Alembert tuff).

The ∼51 Ma Montagnais impact crater on the outer Scotian Shelf is well known, but the potential effects from the impact event on the slope and rise seaward of the crater have, until now, remained poorly understood. Through detailed seismic stratigraphic correlation and ties to available wells, we define a threefold seismic stratigraphic subdivision for Upper Cretaceous to Eocene strata on the shelf and slope, calibrated to the most recent biostratigraphic results. Using this framework, we identify a number of depositional and erosional products that are temporally consistent with a late Ypresian impact event (within the limits of seismic and biostratigraphic resolution). We link a series of prominent failure scarps on the outer shelf and upper slope to a single widespread mass-transport deposit (MTD) on the lower continental slope, rise, and abyssal plain. Failed material amassed in a large debris field referred to here as the “Montagnais MTD”. It covers an area of ∼93 000 km2 and travelled up to 580 km from the impact site where its distal termination onlaps the New England Seamounts, making it one of the largest known debris avalanches on Earth. We interpret these deposits, and the associated pattern of erosion landward of them, as products of widespread margin collapse caused by a combination of ground shaking and ensuing tsunamis triggered by the Montagnais impact event. This study provides insight into the potential effects of outer-shelf marine impact events immediately downslope from impact sites, and their diminished effects with increasing distance along the margin.

Early Cretaceous volcanism is widespread in the eastern Scotian Basin. The stratigraphic position of volcanic rocks within wells was re-evaluated and the volcanological character of the rocks was refined by study of cuttings and well logs. Hauterivian–Barremian volcanic rocks on the SW Grand Banks and Aptian–Albian volcanic rocks in the Orpheus Graben and SE Scotian Shelf resulted from Strombolian type eruptions. More extensive Hawaiian type flows were mapped from seismic profiles near the Mallard and Brant wells on the SW Grand Banks and they appear to have been derived from local basement highs with a positive magnetic anomaly interpreted as volcanic centres. Igneous rocks in the Hesper well on the SE Scotian Shelf are the erosional remnant of basaltic flows that terminated at the paleoshoreline. They correlate with basalt flows both in extensive outcrop on Scatarie Ridge and in several Orpheus Graben wells. The interpretation of the Hesper basalts as an erosional remnant of more extensive basalt flows is consistent with detrital petrographic evidence for substantial uplift of the inboard part of the Scotian Basin in the Hauterivian–Aptian. Widespread volcanic activity indicates a regional and long-lived magma source, which resulted in elevated regional heat flow. Effects of this heat flow are seen in sedimentary rocks of the Sable Subbasin and it had a discernable impact on hydrocarbon maturation.

A thermo-erosion gully has been monitored in the valley of glacier C-79 on Bylot Island since 1999. The main channel of the gully reached 390 m in length a few months after its initiation and grew between 38 and 50 m/year over the following decade, for an overall approximated average of 75 m/year. In 2009, the total gully length and area, including the main and relict channels, were 2500 m and 25 000 m2, respectively. Gullies affect snow accumulation, and therefore ground temperature, local water flow, and drainage. Sinkholes, gully heads, pools, baydzherakhi, tunnels, and collapses were grouped as a function of time since gully formation in that area. Sinkholes and tunnels were formed every year after gully inception, and baydzherakhi were found in 3–10 year old sections of the gully. Stabilization of the gully floor and sides took about a decade.

Temperature loggers were placed in 17 lakes and 13 channels throughout the Mackenzie Delta to determine the annual mean bottom temperature ([Formula: see text]) and its spatial and temporal variation for June 2009 – June 2010. The lakes were classified as perched or connected, depending on the duration of their connection to the channel hydrologic system. Average [Formula: see text] values for nine perched lakes, five channels, and eight connected lakes distributed throughout the Mackenzie Delta were 5.5, 4.6, and 3.4 °C, respectively. The range of [Formula: see text] among all instrumented water bodies in the Delta was 4.0 °C. Over the year, bottom temperatures ranged from >20 °C in midsummer to –5 °C in midwinter, with relative stability between freeze-up in mid-October and breakup at the beginning of June. Channel, perched, and connected lake [Formula: see text], and mean annual near-surface ground temperatures of –4 °C in alluvial sedge wetlands and –2.25 °C in forest, were used to estimate that about 60% of Delta lakes and nearly the entire channel network maintain through-taliks.

For the past few decades, northwestern North America has been affected by climate warming, leading to permafrost degradation and instability of the ground. This is problematic for all infrastructure built on permafrost, especially roads and runways. Thaw settlement and soil consolidation promote embankment subsidence and the development of cracks, potholes, and depressions in road pavement. In this study, we investigate highway stability in permafrost terrain at an experimentally built road embankment near Beaver Creek, Yukon. A network of 25 groundwater monitoring wells was installed along the sides of the road to estimate groundwater flow and its thermal impact on the permafrost beneath the road. Data on topography, water-table elevation, ground temperature, and stratigraphy of the soil were collected at the site. The geotechnical properties of each soil layer were determined by laboratory analysis and used to calibrate a two-dimensional groundwater flow model. Field observations showed that water was progressively losing heat as it flowed under the road embankment. Our results suggest that advective heat transfer related to groundwater flow accelerated permafrost degradation under the road embankment.

A paleomagnetic study of subaerial volcanic rocks and associated siltstones of the Ediacaran Bull Arm Formation in the Avalon Zone of Newfoundland revealed a stable bipolar, hematite-borne primary remanence supported by positive conglomerate, contact, and fold tests. Mean remanence directions in two distal areas (Bonavista and Argentia) are similar, indicating a low paleolatitude position of Avalonia at ∼570 Ma. Redbeds of the overlying ∼550 Ma Crown Hill Formation also carry a primary bipolar hematite-borne remanence with moderate inclination, indicating that Avalonia remained at low to medium paleolatitudes through the end of the Ediacaran. Combining our results with previously published paleomagnetic data of Avalonia suggests moderate-scale drift of Avalonia through low southern paleolatitudes through the latter half of the Ediacaran, providing a paleogeographic context for the development of the first complex metazoan life.

The Red Indian Line is the fundamental Iapetus suture zone in the Newfoundland Appalchians along which the main tract of the Iapetus Ocean was consumed. Despite being the site of the closure of a wide ocean, few vestiges of the Iapetus plate have been accreted along Red Indian Line. Ordovician rocks in the Notre Dame Bay area preserve the only evidence for accretion of a seamount in Newfoundland. The seamount is characterized by alkali basalt and hypabyssal rocks that are juxtaposed with Darriwilian peri-Laurentian volcanic arc rocks (466 ± 4 and 467 ± 4 Ma) along a major mylonite zone. The mylonite zone lacks sedimentary rocks suggesting that the seamount was accreted to the arc along a sediment-starved interface and that significant subduction erosion took place along the Laurentian margin. Identification of subduction erosion indicates that an accretionary prism did not exist outboard of Laurentia in Newfoundland, in contrast to the well developed accretionary prisms of the Caledonides.

Avalonia was a microcontinent during most of the Ordovician, separating the Iapetus Ocean to the north from the Rheic Ocean to the south. In the northern Antigonish Highlands, Nova Scotia, volcanic rocks (Dunn Point and McGillivray Brook formations) underlie Early Silurian – Early Devonian strata (Arisaig Group) and were thought to represent extension that heralded the development of the basin into which Arisaig Group strata were deposited. However, recent U–Pb (zircon, thermal ionization mass spectrometry) data from rhyolite in the Dunn Point Formation (DPF) yielded an age of 460.0 ± 3.4 Ma, and, here, we report a concordant age of 454.5 ± 0.7 Ma for an ignimbrite in the overlying McGillivray Brook Formation (MBF). These data confirm a ca. 10 million year gap between volcanism and onset of Arisaig Group deposition, which occurred after accretion of Avalonia to Baltica. The DPF and MBF both resemble A-type SiO2-rich magmas. The MBF has very high concentrations of Zr (745–1965 ppm), Y (65–213 ppm), Nb (57 to 185 ppm), and high Ga/Al. Several MBF samples exhibit strong LREE depletion, consistent with fractionation of LREE-bearing accessory phases. εNdt values for MBF (t = 455 Ma) range from +1.5 to +3.9, and overlap with DPF rhyolites that range from +2.9 to +3.7. Depleted mantle model ages for MBF and DPF samples unaffected by accessory phase fractionation are between 0.9 and 1.2 Ga and are similar to TDM values in older (Neoproterozoic, Cambrian) crustally derived felsic rocks, suggesting derivation from the lower crustal basement beneath the Antigonish Highlands. DPF and MBF rocks were probably erupted in a local extensional environment within an ensialic arc, perhaps analogous to the modern Taupo Volcanic Zone in northern New Zealand.

Metamorphosed mafic rocks from west-central Vermont crop out in tectonic slices of the Stowe Formation within the Rowe–Hawley Belt of New England. The rocks include greenstone and amphibolite, which are interpreted to have been basaltic flows and gabbroic intrusions, respectively. Even though the rocks have been metamorphosed to greenschist or amphibolite facies, their igneous origins can be deciphered through careful use of geochemistry. Three geochemical types have been identified. Type 1 and 2 samples have geochemical characteristics similar to those found in mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), except that they have slightly elevated light rare-earth element (LREE) concentrations and are higher in Nb/Y ratios. Their Nb/Y ratios are similar to basalts found in Iceland and parts of the Afar region of the East African Rift. Types 1 and 2 are similar to metabasalts of the Caldwell and Maquereau formations in southern Quebec. The less-common type 3 samples have highly enriched LREE and are high in Nb/Y and Zr/Y ratios, similar to some alkali basalts from Afar and Iceland. Detailed analysis of the geochemistry suggests that greenstones and amphibolite from the Stowe Formation formed as basaltic eruptions during very late stages in rifting of the Rodinian continent that eventually led to formation of the Iapetus Ocean. This interpretation is consistent with tectonic models of the Vermont and Quebec Appalachians.

The Newfoundland Appalachians are a classic area for studying the record of arc development and terrane accretion processes with excellent exposure to different crustal levels that are minimally deformed and metamorphosed. This area also provides a link between the once continuous Appalachian and Caledonian orogens. The Annieopsquotch Accretionary Tract lies along the Red Indian Line, within the peri-Laurentian realm of the central Newfoundland Appalachians. The Darriwilian (468–461 Ma) tectonostratigraphic units of the Annieopsquotch Accretionary Tract are commonly characterized by polymictic volcanogenic conglomerate horizons. A conglomerate horizon at the interface between a suprasubduction zone ophiolite and its calc-alkaline volcanic arc cover sequence is herein investigated for zircon and geochemical provenance. Geochronology revealed a maximum age of deposition of 467 ± 4 Ma with zircon inheritance ranging from ca. 500 to 2800 Ma, consistent with a peri-Laurentian continental basement source. Four types of volcanogenic conglomerate clasts are noted on the basis of lithogeochemistry: arc andesite; calc-alkaline basalt; tholeiitic basalt; and non-arc rhyodacite. Tholeiitic basalt clasts are likely locally derived, perhaps from the underlying Skidder Formation. Other volcanic clasts do not have any known geochemical equivalents in the Annieopsquotch Accretionary Tract and hence appear to be exotic. The dominant zircon population suggests that the exotic clasts were derived from a ca. 467 Ma peri-Laurentian andesitic volcanic arc that once formed part of the Annieopsquotch Accretionary Tract.

The ∼470 Ma Ammonoosuc Volcanics of the Bronson Hill terrane of New Hampshire have back-arc basin basalt compositions. Major and trace element compositions compare favorably to coeval volcanic rocks in the Miramichi Highlands of New Brunswick and the Munsangan and Casco Bay volcanics of Maine, back-arc basin basalts of known peri-Gond- wanan origins. Additionally, the Ammonoosuc Volcanics have Nd and Pb isotopic compositions indicative of peri-Gond- wanan provenance. Thus, the Ammonoosuc Volcanics correlate with Middle Ordovician, peri-Gondwanan, Tetagouche- Exploits back-arc rocks of eastern New England and Maritime Canada. This correlation indicates that the Red Indian Line, the principle Iapetus suture, lies along the western margin of the Bronson Hill terrane. However, the younger (∼450 Ma) Oliverian Plutonic Suite rocks that intruded the Ammonoosuc Volcanics, forming domes along the core of the Bronson Hill anticlinorium, have Laurentian isotopic signatures. This suggests that the Ammonoosuc Volcanics were thrust westwardly over the Laurentian margin, and that Laurentian basement rocks are present under the Bronson Hill terrane. A plausible ex- planation for these relationships is that an easterly dipping subduction zone formed the Ammonoosuc Volcanics in the Tetagoughe-Exploits oceanic tract, just east of the coeval Popelogan arc. With the closure of the Iapetus Ocean, this terrane was thrust over the Laurentian margin. Subsequent to obduction of the Ammonoosuc Volcanics, subduction polarity flipped to the west, with the Oliverian arc resulting from a westerly dipping subduction zone that formed under the Taconic Orog- eny-modified Laurentian margin. De plus, les roches volcaniques Ammonoosuc ont des compositions d'isotopes de Nd et de Pb qui indiquent leur provenance peri- gondwanienne. Ainsi, les roches volcaniques Ammonoosuc sont correlees avec les roches d'arriere-arc Tetagouche-Exploits, Ordovicien moyen peri-Gondwana, de l'est de la Nouvelle-Angleterre et des provinces maritimes canadiennes. Cette correla- tion signifie que la ligne Red Indian, la principale suture Iapetus, se situe le long de la bordure ouest du terrane de Bronson Hill. Toutefois, les roches de la suite plutonique Olivierian, plus jeune (∼450 Ma), formant des domes le long du cœur de l'anticlinorium Bronson Hill, ont des signatures isotopiques laurentiennes. Cela suggere que les roches volcaniques Ammo- noosuc aient ete chevauchees vers l'ouest par-dessus la bordure laurentienne et que les roches du socle laurentien se retrou- vent sous le terrane de Bronson Hill. Une explication plausible pour ces relations est qu'une zone de subduction a pendage vers l'est a forme les roches volcaniques Ammonoosuc dans l'etendue oceanique Tetagouche-Exploits, tout juste a l'est de l'arc Popelogan contemporain. Avec la fermeture de l'Ocean Iapetus, ce terrane a ete chevauche par-dessus la bordure lau- rentienne. This special issue reports on some of the results of a multi-disciplinary research program conducted in the Boreal Plains of northwest Alberta and northeast British Columbia. Several innovative approaches to conducting geoscientific research in this remote drift-covered region are presented, including geochemical analysis of bentonites for evaluating kimberlite potential, the use of electromagnetic surveys for mapping buried aggregate deposits, and paleo-topographic mapping techniques to define buried channels. Results of the program include the discovery of several large aggregate deposits, the first kimberlite indicator minerals in northeast British Columbia, a significant sphalerite dispersal train in northwest Alberta, the first documented report of kimberlite-sourced bentonites, and numerous previously unknown interglacial sites. Together these papers provide a greatly enhanced understanding of the glacial history, Quaternary stratigraphy, and kimberlite geology of northwest Alberta and northeast British Columbia and provide an improved framework for resource exploration in the region.

This study demonstrates how ice-flow history, geochronology, geology, and geophysics may be integrated to enhance the effectiveness of boulder tracing in glaciated regions affected by multiple ice-flow events. Mineralized felsic granitoid boulders (erratics) were discovered 18 years ago on a claim block located 10 km northwest of Little Fort, in the Bonaparte Lake map area (NTS 092P), in south-central British Columbia. Although the boulders have yielded significant gold concentrations (up to 4.15 g/t), their bedrock source is not known. The till near the boulders contains up to 1382 gold grains per 15 kg of bulk material with 75% of the grains having pristine morphology, suggesting a short distance of glacial transport. A U–Pb zircon crystallization age of 198.1 ± 0.5 Ma on one mineralized boulder indicates derivation from an Early Jurassic intrusion. Using a vector addition model based on regional ice-flow patterns, the most recent and detailed bedrock geology map, and recently acquired airborne radiometrics and magnetic data, the northeast sector of the Thuya Batholith (195–205 Ma) is interpreted as the most likely bedrock source of the mineralized boulders.

This study is centred on the Bonaparte Lake map area located in the southern Interior Plateau of south-central British Columbia. The reconstruction of the Late Wisconsinan glacial history of this part of the southern sector of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet incorporates (i) the analysis and interpretation of landforms of various scales, (ii) the sedimentology and stratigraphy of glacial sediments, and (iii) the geochemical and mineralogical composition of till and analysis of regional glacial dispersal of these components. The onset of the last glacial event was initiated by ice advancing westerly and southwesterly into the study area from an alpine source region located in the Cariboo Mountains. As glaciation intensified, ice from the Coast Mountains coalesced with the Cariboo Mountain ice over the Interior Plateau and developed into an ice divide around 52° north latitude, which resulted in ice flow to be diverted to a southerly direction over the study area. The two dominant ice-flow directions produced palimpsest dispersal that was measured by three tracers in till including thorianite grains and terbium concentrations in the heavy mineral fraction, and granitoid pebble percentage. The two main phases of ice flow identified within our study area have significant implications for mineral exploration that uses mineral tracing in glacial sediments, especially in the area underlain by the highly prospective Quesnel Terrane.

The structure and stratigraphy of the southeast Nechako Basin, which are poorly understood primarily because of substantial volcanic cover, are investigated in an analysis of seismic reflection, well, and potential field data. Formation and development of the SE Nechako Basin resulted in sub-basins containing Cretaceous and Eocene rocks. Interpretation reveals that dextral transtension in the Early to Middle Eocene created NNW-trending, en echelon, strike-slip faults linked by pull-apart basins, which locally contain a thickness of Eocene volcaniclastic rocks of >3 km. This structural pattern is consistent with regional observations that suggest the transfer of slip from the Yalakom fault to the north via a series of en echelon strike-slip faults. In the Middle to Late Eocene, faults associated with a change in the direction of stress, echoed by the north-trending right-lateral Fraser fault, reactivated and cut earlier structures. A simple model agrees with local observations, that northeast-directed compression was subparallel to the relic Cretaceous grain. Cretaceous rocks are discontinuous throughout the basin and may be remnants of a broader basin, or a number of contemporaneous basins, formed in a regional transpressional tectonic setting that caused northeast-directed thrusting along the eastern side of the Coast Plutonic Complex. Results suggest that thrusting affected most of the SE Nechako Basin, as observed across the Intermontane Belt to the northwest and southeast. The pattern of deposition of Neogene volcanic rocks of the Chilcotin Group was in part controlled by the Eocene structural grain, but we find no evidence of Neogene deformation.

The Cretaceous succession at Mount Tatlow, British Columbia, is a cornerstone of Cordilleran stratigraphy, preserving a mostly continuous record of upper Lower Cretaceous to lower Upper Cretaceous sedimentary strata. The succession is capped by volcanic strata of the Powell Creek formation. Lithofacies assemblages within the Mount Tatlow succession reflect sedimentation in a deep-water submarine fan system at the base of the section, to overlying submarine-fan and to pro-deltaic deposition, and, finally, to delta-plain sedimentation at the top of the succession. Radiolarian and foraminifer fossils from the lower part of the Mount Tatlow section are the first recovered from the Intermontane basins of British Columbia and indicate a middle Albian to Cenomanian age, most likely Cenomanian. The presence of these fossils indicates that open-marine conditions existed locally in the basin at this time, but the strongly altered and pyritized nature of the fauna suggests that a reducing environment fostered early diagenetic pyritization processes in the subsurface sediments. Detrital zircon populations collected from the succession are in agreement with the paleontological ages.

In the BATHOLITHSonland seismic project, a refraction – wide-angle reflection survey was shot in 2009 across the Coast Mountains and Interior Plateau of central British Columbia. Part of the seismic profile crossed the Nechako Basin, a Jurassic–Cretaceous basin with potential for hydrocarbons within sedimentary strata that underlies widespread volcanic rocks. Along this 205 km-long line segment, eight large explosive shots were fired into 980 seismometers. Forward and inverse modelling of the traveltime data were conducted with two independent methods: ray-tracing based modelling of first and secondary arrivals, and a higher resolution wavefront-based first-arrival seismic tomography. Material with velocities less than 5.0 km/s is interpreted as sedimentary rocks of the Nechako Basin, while velocities from 5.0–6.0 km/s may correspond to interlayered sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The greatest thickness of sedimentary rocks in the basin is found in the central 110 km of the profile. Two sub-basins were identified in this region, with widths of 20–50 km and maximum sedimentary depths of 2.5 and 3.3 km. Such features are well-defined in the velocity model, since resolution tests indicate that features with widths greater than ∼13 km are reliable. Beneath the sedimentary rocks, seismic velocities increase more slowly with depth — from 6.0 km/s just below the basin to 6.3 km/s at ∼17 km in depth, and then to 6.8–7.0 km/s at the base of the crust. The Moho is found at a depth of 33.5–35 km beneath the profile, and mantle velocities are high at 8.05–8.10 km/s.

In 2008, a Vibroseis seismic reflection survey was acquired by Geoscience BC across the eastern part of the volcanic-covered Nechako basin in central British Columbia, where Cretaceous sedimentary rocks have been exhumed along a NNW trend. Good signal penetration through the volcanic cover is indicated by lower crustal reflections at 8–12 s, which were recorded by the entire seismic survey. Comparison of the 2008 seismic survey with data from a previous survey indicates that the lack of reflectivity in the earlier surveys is generally representative of the subsurface geology. The seismic data show that ∼1700 and ∼2900 m thick sub-basins are present at the northern and southern ends of this trend, but the intervening Cretaceous rocks are discontinuous and relatively thin. The creation of a passive-roof duplex by Campanian or later low-angle thrusting is inferred within the thickest Cretaceous strata, but elsewhere faulting is likely related to Eocene extension or transtension. Seismic reflections are also recorded from folded volcanic stratigraphy, the base of the surface volcanic rocks, an underlying volcaniclastic stratigraphy, and intrusions projecting into a Quaternary volcanic cone. Seismic interpretation is complemented by coincident audiofrequency magnetotelluric surveys, from which faulting is inferred at offsets in a regional conductor. No regionally extensive stratigraphy can be identified within the seismic data, and the central Nechako basin appears to be a complex network of small, deformed sub-basins, rather than a single large basin.

Analysis of over 10 000 water-well records has been used to produce new depth-to-bedrock maps for areas around five cities on the central Interior Plateau of central British Columbia: 100 Mile House, Prince George, Quesnel, Vanderhoof, and Williams Lake. Hitherto, exploration for mineral and hydrocarbon resources has been hampered by a lack of basic knowledge of the thickness of Neogene and Quaternary lithologies. Interpretation of these new maps provides first-order constraints on the localization of thick drift in pre-Late Wisconsinan bedrock paleovalleys, some of which are now buried. Basalt lavas of the Chilcotin Group are restricted to erosional remnants of previously extensive sheets emplaced onto an older peneplain. Our results confirm that the Neogene and Quaternary cover is primarily controlled by paleotopography and is generally thin and patchy across much of the region. Increased understanding of the three-dimensional distribution of cover produces a corresponding increase in the utility of geological, geochemical, and geophysical exploration techniques, and a reduction in the risk for future mineral exploration activities, especially when combined with more sophisticated data sets.

Two-dimensional (2-D) models of audio and broadband magnetotelluric (MT) data collected throughout the southern Nechako basin in south–central British Columbia, Canada, provide electrical resistivity images of the Cretaceous to Oligocene volcanic and sedimentary packages and underlying crustal-scale features. Analysis of distortion effects and structural dimensionality indicate that the MT responses are primarily one-dimensional (1-D) at periods less than 0.1 s. Departures from a 1-D response occur with maximum phase differences occurring between 0.1 and 10 s. The upper crustal resistivity models reveal a low resistivity layer at near surface depths, interpreted as Chilcotin basalts, that blankets portions of the region to depths less than 50 m, but locally thicken up to 200 m. Cretaceous sedimentary units (those showing the highest potential for hydrocarbons) are characterized by moderately low resistivities that are laterally variable. More uniform, lower resistivities appear to be associated with the Eocene volcaniclastic groups, suggesting that the MT method can distinguish between these units and may be useful in targeting areas that are more prospective for hydrocarbon exploration. In general midcrustal resistivity values are high, consistent with values of typical volcanic terranes; however, a low-resistivity zone is identified at 8–10 km depth that correlates closely with the location of seismic reflectors as well as recent microseismic activity. This low-resistivity zone is interpreted as a midcrustal reservoir of magma, the top of which marks the upper limit of fluids migrating from lower crust depths. Additionally, several crustal-scale faults are imaged.

The Middle Mountain Metamorphic Domain of the Montana Metasedimentary Terrane, northwestern Wyoming Craton, within the northwestern Tobacco Root Mountains, mainly comprises migmatized tonalitic gneiss interlayered with amphibolitic (hornblende) gneiss, both of which are cut by metamorphosed mafic rocks. Together, these gneisses are defined as Middle Mountain Gneiss. Archean tonalitic gneiss from west of, and amphibolitic gneiss from east of, the Bismark Fault give, from chemically and air-abraded zircon grains, U–Pb ID–TIMS ages of 3325.5 ± 1.7 and 3340 Ma, respectively. These results reflect primary magmatic ages and show that the Middle Mountain Gneiss extends into the northern area of the Central Fault Block, between the Bismark and Mammoth faults. Older crustal processes in the tonalitic gneiss are evidenced by inherited grains, the oldest of which is >3460 Ma. A metabasite hosted in tonalitic gneiss in the Bismark Fault selvage zone yields a zircon age of 2468 Ma, which is interpreted as the time of metamorphism. This date and other ca. 2470 Ma dates known in the region reflect a series of thermotectonic events designated here as the Beaverhead – Tobacco Root Orogeny. Geochemical evidence in the Central Fault Block metabasites suggests that their >2470 Ma precursors evolved in a back-arc – arc-rift setting, whereas their equivalents west of the Bismark Fault were largely mid-ocean ridge basalt-related tholeiites and east of the Central Fault Block were back-arc tholeiites showing some continental affinity. The metabasite was metamorphosed, deformed, and intruded by pegmatite at 1756 Ma during the Big Sky Orogeny. This orogenic event also produced new zircon growth in Archean tonalitic gneiss. Monazite with an age of 75 Ma, found at one location, reflects nearby intrusion of the Cretaceous Tobacco Root Batholith.

The 1.9 Ga Coronation “geosyncline” to the west of Slave craton was among the first Precambrian continental margins to be identified, but its duration as a passive margin has long been uncertain. We report a new U–Pb (isotope dilution – thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID–TIMS)) 207Pb/206Pb date of 2014.32 ± 0.89 Ma for zircons from a felsic pyroclastic rock at the top of the Vaillant basalt, which underlies the passive margin sequence (Epworth Group) at the allochthonous continental slope. A sandstone tongue within the basalt yields Paleoproterozoic (mostly synvolcanic) and Mesoarchean detrital zircon dates, of which the latter are compatible with derivation from the Slave craton. In contrast, detrital zircon grains from the Zephyr arkose in the accreted Hottah terrane have Paleoproterozoic and Neoarchean dates. The latter cluster tightly at 2576 Ma, indistinguishable from igneous zircon dates reported here from the Badlands granite, which is faulted against the Vaillant basalt and underlying Drill arkose. We interpret these data to indicate that Badlands granite belongs to the hanging wall of the collisional geosuture between Hottah terrane and the Slave margin, represented by the Drill–Vaillant rift assemblage. If 2014.32 ± 0.89 Ma dates the rift-to-drift transition and 1882.50 ± 0.95 Ma (revised from 1882 ± 4 Ma) the arrival of the passive margin at the trench bordering the Hottah terrane, the duration of the Coronation passive margin was ∼132 million years, close to the mean age of extinct Phanerozoic passive margins of ∼134 million years (see Bradley 2008).

High-precision isotope dilution – thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID–TIMS) U–Pb zircon and baddeleyite ages from the PX1 vertically layered mafic intrusion Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, indicate initiation of magma crystallization at 22.10 ± 0.07 Ma. The magmatic activity lasted a minimum of 0.52 Ma. 40Ar/39Ar amphibole dating yielded ages from 21.9 ± 0.6 to 21.8 ± 0.3, identical within errors to the U–Pb ages, despite the expected 1% theoretical bias between 40Ar/39Ar and U–Pb dates. This overlap could result from (i) rapid cooling of the intrusion (i.e., less than the 0.3 to 0.6 Ma 40Ar/39Ar age uncertainties) from closure temperatures (Tc) of zircon (699–988 °C) to amphibole (500–600 °C); (ii) lead loss affecting the youngest zircons; or (iii) excess argon shifting the plateau ages towards older values. The combination of the 40Ar/39Ar and U/Pb datasets implies that the maximum amount of time PX1 intrusion took to cool below amphibole Tc is 0.8 Ma, suggesting PX1 lifetime of 520 000 to 800 000 Ma. Age disparities among coexisting baddeleyite and zircon (22.10 ± 0.07/0.08/0.15 Ma and 21.58 ± 0.15/0.16/0.31 Ma) in a gabbro sample from the pluton margin suggest complex genetic relationships between phases. Baddeleyite is found preserved in plagioclase cores and crystallized early from low silica activity magma. Zircon crystallized later in a higher silica activity environment and is found in secondary scapolite and is found close to calcite veins, in secondary scapolite that recrystallised from plagioclase. close to calcite veins. Oxygen isotope δ18O values of altered plagioclase are high (+7.7), indicating interaction with fluids derived from host-rock carbonatites. The coexistence of baddeleyite and zircon is ascribed to interaction of the PX1 gabbro with CO2-rich carbonatite-derived fluids released during contact metamorphism.

The U–Pb geochronology of three granitoid plutons and three granitic pegmatite dykes, largely from the Thompson Nickel Belt located along the northwestern Superior craton margin, was investigated to place constraints on the timing of felsic magmatism associated with closure of the Manikewan Ocean and final continent–continent collision to form the Trans-Hudson Orogen. These data indicate that 1840–1820 Ma granite magmatism along the Superior margin was more active than previously thought and that some magmatism extended beyond the Thompson Nickel Belt sensu stricto, including the 1836 ± 3 Ma Mystery Lake granodiorite, 1822 ± 5 Ma Wintering Lake granodiorite, and the 1825 ± 8 Ma Fox Lake granite located in the Split Lake Block. Granitic pegmatites within the Thompson Nickel Belt were emplaced late in the collisional history in the period 1.79–1.75 Ga and include a 1770 ± 2 Ma dyke exposed at the Thompson pit, a 1767 ± 6 Ma dyke at the Pipe Pit, and a 1786 ± 2 Ma dyke located at Paint Lake. The final stage of crustal amalgamation in the eastern Trans-Hudson Orogen involved Superior Province crustal thickening and partial melting forming 1.84–1.82 Ga granite magmas and then final collision at ∼1.8 Ga between the Superior Province and a continental block to the west consisting of the previously amalgamated Sask and Hearne cratons. Heating of the Superior craton margin and granitic magmatism continued past peak metamorphism (1790–1750 Ma); this thermal event is represented by the emplacement of numerous late pegmatite dykes and evidenced by cooling dates recorded by metamorphic minerals (e.g., titanite) in reworked Archean gneisses and Proterozoic intrusions.

The Precambrian shield of Madagascar is reevaluated with recently compiled geological data and new U–Pb sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) geochronology. Two Archean domains are recognized: the eastern Antongil–Masora domain and the central Antananarivo domain, the latter with distinctive belts of metamafic gneiss and schist (Tsaratanana Complex). In the eastern domain, the period of early crust formation is extended to the Paleo–Mesoarchean (3.32–3.15 Ga) and a supracrustal sequence (Fenerivo Group), deposited at 3.18 Ga and metamorphosed at 2.55 Ga, is identified. In the central domain, a Neoarchean period of high-grade metamorphism and anatexis that affected both felsic (Betsiboka Suite) and mafic gneisses (Tsaratanana Complex) is documented. We propose, therefore, that the Antananarivo domain was amalgamated within the Greater Dharwar Craton (India + Madagascar) by a Neoarchean accretion event (2.55–2.48 Ga), involving emplacement of juvenile igneous rocks, high-grade metamorphism, and the juxtaposition of disparate belts of mafic gneiss and schist (metagreenstones). The concept of the “Betsimisaraka suture” is dispelled and the zone is redefined as a domain of Neoproterozoic metasedimentary (Manampotsy Group) and metaigneous rocks (Itsindro–Imorona Suite) formed during a period of continental extension and intrusive igneous activity between 840 and 760 Ma. Younger orogenic convergence (560–520 Ma) resulted in east-directed overthrusting throughout south Madagascar and steepening with local inversion of the domain in central Madagascar. Along part of its length, the Manampotsy Group covers the boundary between the eastern and central Archean domains and is overprinted by the Angavo–Ifanadiana high-strain zone that served as a zone of crustal weakness throughout Cretaceous to Recent times.

The Albertosaurus bonebed provides evidence for the mass-mortality of at least 12 Albertosaurus . Albertosaurus, other vertebrates, and trees are concentrated on upper point bar surfaces of a small meandering paleochannel. Throughout the field area, Albertosaurus, other vertebrates, and coalified plants are also preserved patchily in overbank mudstones at the same horizon. Although the bonebed is dominated by Albertosaurus, there are also sparse macrofossil remains of Hypacrosaurus and Albertonykus . The basal lag yields vertebrate microfossils containing at least 19 additional taxa. Freshwater invertebrates are preserved at and below the base of the paleochannel. Large elements are over represented at the site, whereas smaller elements are under represented, suggesting hydraulic sorting. The taphonomic signature of the site suggests that death, disarticulation, and burial took place within one year. We conclude that one or more storms of large intensity downed trees and temporarily drowned the paleolandscape, ultimately killing the tyrannosaurids directly or indirectly. Logs and carcasses were reworked on a point bar during the waning stages of the storm and over subsequent years. Scavenging and breakage of remains by large carnivores was probably inhibited by the mixed log and bone jam. Remains of smaller scavengers (small theropods and snails) are plentiful suggesting these forms were more successful at accessing remains. Juvenile Albertosaurus are under represented at the site suggesting the possibility of age segregation. Because the group of Albertosaurus may have been forced together by rising floodwaters, it is not possible to assess the degree to which the taxon was gregarious from these data alone.

One century ago, a field party from the American Museum of Natural History discovered a bonebed in the Upper Cretaceous Horseshoe Canyon Formation of Alberta, Canada. Excavations by that museum, the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology, and the University of Alberta have revealed the presence of at least a dozen individuals — represented by articulated partial skeletons, associated skeletons, and disarticulated isolated elements — of Albertosaurus sarcophagus . Tyrannosaurids dominate the bonebed assemblage, which also includes an adult Hypacrosaurus altispinus , two individuals of Albertonykus borealis , and numerous other, predominantly terrestrial, vertebrates. Skeletal morphology, phylogenetic inference, monodominant bonebeds, trackway sites, and ecological inferences support the notion that some non-avian theropods were gregarious animals. And specifically in the Albertosaurus bonebed, associated geologic and taphonomic evidence do not rule out a behavioural component in this catastrophic, mass-death assemblage.

Over the past decade, excavations of a monodominant theropod bonebed from the lower Maastrichtian beds of the Horseshoe Canyon Formation have recovered a minimum number of 26 individuals of the tyrannosaur, Albertosaurus sarcophagus . Examination of skeletal elements from the bonebed revealed a small number of abnormalities from at least two individuals. These include bony spurs (enthesophytes) of unknown origin on three pedal phalanges. Well-healed fracture calluses are present on two rib shafts and a gastralia element. The left dentary of one adult preserves both healed and unhealed parallel bite marks and a perforative lesion attributable to a partially healed, mechanically induced puncture wound. Unfortunately, the limited range in the types and frequencies of pathological changes provides only little information on the distribution of such phenomena but may be suggestive of the overall “health” of the population.

The overall palynology of the upper Horseshoe Canyon Formation to lower Scollard Formation within the Edmonton Group is reviewed providing new insights into biostratigraphic relationships for the interval, including the recognition of unconformities in the stratigraphic package. The palynomorph recovery from the Horseshoe Canyon Formation and overlying units documents a number of significant events that allow the subdivision of the section. The Albertosaurus bonebed occurs within the lower Maastrichtian portion of the Edmonton Group. The bonebed is situated just below the base of the Scollardia trapaformis Palynomorph Zone, an important marker assemblage that has been documented from areas of the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. This indicates that the bonebed lies at the top of the Mancicorpus vancampoi Zone. The transition between the zones is marked by a colour change in the sediments, the appearance of coals and organic-rich sediments above the transition, a decrease in numbers of vertebrate fossils, and the appearance of new pollen species. It is inferred that the observed changes reflect a climatic switch from dry to wetter conditions. At a large scale, palynomorph assemblages across this transition do not clearly indicate marked differences that can be attributed to the climatic change, with the exception of the appearance of Scollardia trapaformis and Mancicorpus gibbus in the assemblages. On a microscale of a few metres, there are changes in relative abundance of plant groups.

Horseshoeichthys armaserratus , gen. et sp. nov., (Clupeomorpha: Ellimmichthyiformes: Sorbinichthyidae) is described from the Horseshoe Canyon Formation (Maastrichtian), Albertosaurus bonebed locality, Alberta, Canada. Horseshoeichthys armaserratus is classified as an ellimmichthyiform based on the following characters: the presence of a sixth infraorbital with a sensory canal that leads to the fifth infraorbital, absence of a supraorbital bone, subrectangular predorsal scutes, parietals in contact with each other at the midline, and two supramaxillae. The specimen is classified in the Sorbinichthyidae Family as it has abdominal ribs articulating in pits on the centra, posterior spines on predorsal scutes, and absence of a median spine on predorsal scutes. A new genus and species is proposed based on the presence of (anteriorly) Y-shaped mesethmoid, supraorbital, subrectangular predorsal scutes with coarse, rounded serrae on the posterior margin and a large anterior projection, scales with serrae on the circuli, and two postcleithra. This specimen represents the first freshwater ellimmichthyiform from the Upper Cretaceous of North America and the highest paleolatitude (59°N) occurrence known for the family. Furthermore, the dentary and centra have distinctive morphologies that are matched by specimens in microvertebrate localities from three underlying formations, including the Milk River Formation (Santonian), which indicates at least a 14 million year history for this lineage.

The faunal assemblage from the early Maastrichtian portion of the Horseshoe Canyon Formation is described on the basis of four new vertebrate microfossil localities and remains from the Albertosaurus bonebed. All of the localities sampled were deposited during a cool, dry climate at a palaeolatitude of ∼58°N. Thus, these assemblages provide insight into a northern cool-climate assemblage in the early Maastrichtian of western North America. This fauna is characterized by the presence of taxa with more northern affinities, such as Holostean A, champsosaurs, Troodon , and toothed birds. Warm-climate taxa, such as crocodylians, large and diverse turtles, and albanerpetontids are notable in their absence. The Albertosaurus bonebed locality at the top of unit 4 of the Horseshoe Canyon Formation was deposited during the initial stages of a trend to a warmer and wetter climate that is represented in unit 5. The bonebed shares many taxa with the underlying vertebrate microfossil localities. However, a notable difference is the presence of Atrociraptor marshalli from the Albertosaurus bonebed but not the other localities in the upper Horseshoe Canyon Formation. The presence of Atrociraptor may be attributable to this change in climate rather than local ecological conditions. Also, the assemblages are different in the paucity of fish remains in the bonebed, and the relative rarity of shed hadrosaur teeth. The low abundance of aquatic taxa and rarity of shed teeth of hadrosaurs indicate that the locality is largely autochthonous, with little material being transported into the site.

The crust and upper mantle thermal regime of the Canadian Cordillera and its tectonic consequences were an important part of the Cordillera Lithoprobe program and related studies. This article provides a review, first of the thermal constraints, and then of consequences in high surface elevation and current tectonics. Cordillera and adjacent craton temperatures are well constrained by geothermal heat flow, mantle tomography velocities, upper mantle xenoliths, and the effective elastic thickness, Te. Cordillera temperatures are very high and laterally uniform, explained by small scale convection beneath a thin lithosphere, 800–900 °C at the Moho, contrasted to 400–500 °C for the craton. The high temperatures provide an explanation for why the Cordillera has high elevation in spite of a generally thin crust, ∼33 km, in contrast to low elevation and thicker crust, 40–45 km, for the craton. The Cordillera is supported ∼1600 m by lithosphere thermal expansion. In the Cordillera only the upper crust has significant strength; Te ∼ 15 km, in contrast to over 60 km for the craton. The Cordillera is tectonically active because the lithosphere is sufficiently weak to be deformed by plate boundary and gravitational forces; the craton is too strong. The Canadian Cordillera results have led to new understandings of processes in backarcs globally. High backarc temperatures and weak lithospheres explain the tectonic activity over long geological times of mobile belts that make up about 20% of continents. They also have led to a new understanding of collision orogenic heat in terms of incorporation of already hot backarcs.

The Abitibi and Wawa subprovinces of the southern Superior Province differ in terms of the extent of pre-existing 2750 Ma sialic crust and relationships between mantle plume type (tholeiitic basalt – komatiite) and arc type (tholeiite to calc-alkaline basalt – andesite – dacite – rhyolite) volcanic successions but evolved in close proximity to each other. Isotopic data, evidence from the Kapuskasing uplift, continuation of major structures associated with large gold deposits from the Abitibi into the Wawa subprovince and the related occurrence of diamonds in lamprophyric rocks in both subprovinces point to a common evolution prior to and during orogeny. Differences preserved in supracrustal sequences of the two subprovinces suggest that the main petrogenetic controls on orogenic gold deposits and lamprophyre-hosted diamond deposits lay in the lower crust and upper mantle. Similar processes must also have been active where gold and diamonds are associated on other Archean cratons, such as the Slave and possibly the Kaapvaal craton. Based on evidence preserved in the Abitibi–Wawa orogen, rapid crustal growth at ∼2.7 Ga was linked to the interplay between plate tectonics and mantle plumes. Key indicators in the model developed for the Abitibi–Wawa arc are the co-existence of plume-related rock types, modern-style adakites, major gold deposits, and lamprophyre-hosted diamond occurrences, at least in cases where shoshonitic host magmas can ascend rapidly through the crust. All of these indicators are now identified on the Kaapvaal craton by 3.1 Ga and many recur together in Paleoproterzoic and younger terranes, suggesting a common mechanism for rapid crustal growth through much of Earth’s history. The variety of granitoid types found within the Abitibi–Wawa orogen demonstrates that local tectonic factors, rather than a hotter average upper mantle, were important in controlling the type of magmas formed. Based on the geodynamic history of the subprovince, mantle plume interaction with an existing volcanic arc and the subduction of oceanic plateau crust played an important role in the formation of magmas similar to Cenozoic adakites. Flat subduction beneath a mantle wedge was probably responsible for the generation of the adakites and also promoted diamond stability at shallow depths while enhancing the reservoirs for subsequent orogenic gold deposits. The history of magmatism and mineralization in the Abitibi and Wawa subprovinces precludes an early or gradual development of a cratonic keel, which instead must have coupled with crust during the latest stages of orogeny.

Lithoprobe aided and will continue to guide diamond exploration in Canada via a number of diverse ways and at scales from cratons to individual ore bodies. Specific transects outlined the domainal nature, geometry, and age relations of crust, subjacent mantle, and diamond-bearing roots in unusually rich detail for cratonic settings such as those of the Superior and Slave cratons, as well as pericratonic (shield) settings such as those of the Sask craton and Buffalo Hills terrane. The Superior and Slave examples of craton construction by multiple underthrust layers, as inferred from structural geometries observed in Lithoprobe seismic and magnetotelluric surveys, remain the clearest resolved to date. The first definition of the Sask craton occurred 10–15 years ago and helped fuel the diamond industry’s ongoing revision of Clifford’s Rule for exploration so as to include targets in Proterozoic shield settings. Main Lithoprobe transect results and supporting geoscience studies have helped to demonstrate the very different settings for paragenesis of both peridotitic and eclogitic types of diamonds found across Canada. Seismic methods have delineated many of the the oldest, typically depleted cratonic mantle blocks, as well as Archean and Proterozoic sutures, where larger percentages of eclogite might occur. Development of geophysical methods related to Lithoprobe data acquisition has led to metre-scale, high-resolution mapping of diamondiferous kimberlite pipes and shallow-dipping dykes, thus allowing more accurate estimates of their volume and more efficient mining of these diamond deposits.

Geodynamic modeling demonstrates various modes of behaviour of the tectonically active continental mantle lithosphere. At continental collision, mantle lithosphere below thickening crust can be accommodated by mixed subduction-like consumption and viscous drip-like instability, depending on the material rheology, temperature, and convergence velocity. Late-stage slab steepening, dual-sided and ablative consumption, and breakoff can occur as the buoyant crust resists subduction. Removal of accreted crust by erosion can modify how even the deepest portions of the mantle lithosphere evolves during contraction. When gravitational forcing rather than plate shortening dominates, mantle lithosphere may be removed through viscous dripping-like instability or delamination. The removal induces crustal heating, modified topography, and deformation, but distinctive styles of these develop depending on whether mantle lithosphere delaminates or drips. With a modified density stratification postulated for the Archean, relatively buoyant mantle lithosphere may undergo an in-situ overturn when triggered by unstable dense eclogite and basal traction. This causes a pulse of rapid crustal heating as hot lowermost lithosphere is brought into contact with the base of the crust. As an interpretive tool, the geodynamic experiments illustrate some of the dynamically feasible modes of behaviour and controlling parameters for the continental mantle lithosphere in ancient to modern tectonic environments.

The map A flowline map of glaciated Canada based on remote sensing data presents flowlines for the former Laurentide and Cordilleran ice sheets based on flow indicators derived from aggregated, flow-parallel landforms — drumlins and crag and tails, fluting, sinuous ridges and furrows, and rises. An extensive review introduces the concepts and evolution of flowline mapping at continental-ice-sheet and regional scales, emphasizing the use of new remote sensing data. Coherent, glaciologically plausible sets of flowlines mapped as flow tracts reflect large-scale flow structure in the paleo-ice sheets and demarcate fields of flow-parallel bedforms. In addition to flow reconstruction, mapped distributions of fields of glacial terrain types — hummocky terrain, Rogen terrain, and bedrock-dominant terrain — increase our power to interpret flowlines and, in turn, give evidence on the genesis of these terrains. End moraines and eskers also aid map interpretation. Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper+ (ETM+) satellite images and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) hill shades provide the basic information for this flowline mapping in a Geographical Information System (ArcMap). Information on the Flowline Map allows us to develop conceptual models of ice sheets and to appreciate regional constraints on applications in mineral exploration, in aggregate and groundwater discovery and assessment, in soil and landform genesis, and in glaciology, paleoclimatology, and paleoceanography.

A detailed study of the geochemical and isotopic characteristics of the volcanic rocks of the Hidden and Louis formations, which make up the hanging wall to the volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits at Flin Flon, Manitoba, was carried out on a stratigraphically controlled set of samples. The stratigraphy consists of the lowermost, dominantly basaltic, Hidden formation, and the overlying, dominantly basaltic, Louis formation. Of importance petrogenetically, is the 1920 unit a basaltic andesite with Nb/Thmn = 0.54–0.62, εNd(1.9Ga) = +3.6–+5.9, εHf(1.9Ga) = +8.5–+9.6, and 204Pb/206Pb = 23.9. The basaltic flows that dominate the Hidden formation have Nb/Thmn = 0.16–0.29, εNd(1.9Ga) = +1.7–+4.4, εHf(1.9Ga) = +7.0–+11.8 and 204Pb/206Pb = 16.9–18.6). The Carlisle Lake basaltic–andesite (top of Hidden formation) is characterized by Nb/Thmn = 0.16–0.14, and 204Pb/206Pb = 21.4. The rhyodacitic Tower member (bottom of Louis formation) has Nb/Thmn = 0.23, εNd1.9Ga = +4.6, εHf1.9Ga = +9.3, and 204Pb/206Pb = 22.2. The basaltic flows that dominate the Louis formation have Nb/Thmn = 0.18–0.25, εNd(1.9Ga) = +3.6–+4.2, εHf(1.9Ga) = +8.4–+11.3 and 204Pb/206Pb = 17.9. The Hidden and Louis formations show dominantly transitional arc tholeiite signatures, with the 1920 unit having arc tholeiite characteristics. It is interpreted to have formed through extensive fractional crystallization of differentiated magmas at shallow levels in oceanic crust. Given the geological, geochemical, and isotopic characteristics of the Hidden and Louis formations, they are interpreted to represent subducted slab metasomatism with minor contamination from subducted sediments.

The hanging wall to the Flin Flon, Callinan, and Triple 7 volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits of the Flin Flon district is composed of the Hidden and Louis formations. The contact between these formations is marked by mafic tuff that represents a hiatus in effusive volcanism. The formations form a composite volcanic edifice that was erupted and grew within a large, volcanic–tectonic subsidence structure (hosting the deposits) that developed within a rifted-arc environment. The formations are evidence of resurgent effusive volcanism and subsidence following a hiatus in volcanism marked by ore formation since they consist of dominantly basaltic flows, sills, and volcaniclastic rocks with subordinate basaltic andesite and rhyodacitic flows and volcaniclastic rocks. The Hidden formation is interpreted to represent a small shield volcano and the Louis formation a separate shield volcano that developed on its flank. Both the Hidden and Louis volcanic edifices were constructed by continuous, low-volume eruptions of pillow lava. A gradual change from a dominantly extensional environment during the formation of the footwall Flin Flon formation to a progressively more dominant convergent environment during the emplacement of the hanging wall suggests that the Hidden and Louis formations are unlikely to host significant volcanogenic massive sulphide-type mineralization. However, synvolcanic structures in the formations define structural corridors that project downwards into the footwall where they encompass massive sulphide mineralization, indicating their control on ore formation, longevity,and reactivation as magma and fluid pathways during the growth of the Hidden and Louis volcanoes.

The sedimentary record in a 40.9 m giant (Calypso) piston core (MD02-2494) raised from the inner basin within Effingham Inlet, British Columbia, Canada, during the 2002 Marges Ouest Nord Américaines (MONA) campaign, spans from 14 360 14C years BP (17 300 calibrated calendar (cal.) years BP) to about nine centuries before present. The core archives changes in sedimentation and sea level immediately following deglaciation of the Late Wisconsin Fraser Glaciation, which peaked about 15 000 14C years BP. The presence of the Mazama Ash in the core anchors a detailed chronology based on 49 radiocarbon dates and seven Pleistocene paleomagnetic secular variation correlations. Diatom assemblages identify a marine–freshwater–marine transition in the basin, which occurred 11 630 14C years BP (13 500 cal. years BP). At this time, a bedrock sill, presently at 46 m depth, was briefly exposed as sea level fell and then rose again during isostatic crustal adjustments. These data constrain a new sea-level curve for the outer coast of Vancouver Island covering the past 12 000 14C years BP (14 000 cal. years BP), providing new information on the nature of deglaciation along the west coast of Canada and informing interpretations of regional paleoceanographic records and mantle viscosity models.

Multiproxy analysis of a 38 m long sediment core recovered from the Vancouver Island margin (48.97°N, 127.04°W, water depth 1243 m) has yielded a millennial-scale history of upwelling and export production over the last ∼50 ka. Higher concentrations of marine organic carbon, opal, and trace Mo suggest that production was higher, and sedimentary pore waters more anoxic, during the warm Holocene, Bølling–Allerød, and interstadial events between 31 and 44 ka BP. Relatively lower production and higher inputs of terrigenous organic matter occurred during the last glacial (14.7–31 ka BP; Cordilleran ice sheet proximal to coring site at ∼19.5 ka BP) and from 44–50.4 ka BP. Enrichments in sedimentary δ15N during interstadial events are interpreted to reflect episodic delivery and upwelling of isotopically heavy nitrate to the surface waters and subsequent vectoring to the seafloor via settling planktonic detritus. Similar patterns are seen in southern California and other areas along the western margin of North America, implying that heavier nitrate generated by denitrification in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific has in the past been carried northward in the California Undercurrent at least as far as central Vancouver Island. This inference is consistent with modern hydrographic observations in the region. Comparison of the coherent Vancouver Island, Oregon, California, and northwest Mexico margin records with late Pleistocene climate history in Greenland reinforces the conclusion that a tight physical and biogeochemical coupling has existed for at least 50 ka between the North Atlantic and North American margin waters, including those off Vancouver Island.

The Mackenzie Trough provides a high resolution signal for paleoceanography as a result of high sedimentation rates at the mouth of the Mackenzie River. Three cores were collected along a transect covering a depth range of 58–671 m and the time period of the last 11 500 cal BP. Prior to the last ∼10 000 cal BP, the distal core is characterized by laminated sediment and a foraminiferal fauna of Arctic Bottom Water calcareous species and abundant planktic foraminifera suggesting little freshwater runoff and (or) perennial sea-ice cover. This occurs at a similar time as laminated sediments from the west of this site, which have been suggested to be part of the Lake Agassiz flood outburst and (or) cold period. If this outburst occurred, the very positive oxygen isotope values from our core (PC3; >+3.0 ppm) indicate that it did not flow through the Mackenzie Trough. After 9000 cal BP, the faunas in the three cores differ because of timing and different water depths. However, it is possible to see a progression of cold saline water prior to 10 000 cal BP, with a freshening of surface water after 10 000 cal BP where tintinnids (brackish water ciliates) occur with incursions of deep water Arctic calcareous species to ∼3000 years BP. A sequence of mixed faunas appears as sea ice returns, at least periodically in the last 3000 cal BP; but (in core PC2 only) a return to more sea ice is recorded by both foraminifera and dinocysts in the last few hundred years.

U-series isotope behaviour in subsurface sediment of the Arctic Ocean is investigated based on high resolution measurements of natural radionuclides (210Pb, 226Ra, 230Th) and a few analyses of anthropogenic 137Cs in cores collected during the 2005 Healy-Oden Trans-Arctic Expedition (HOTRAX). Cores from the Mendeleev Ridge, representing distinct bathymetric settings, are analyzed in more detail as a means to assess the dating potential of such radionuclides at sites characterized by very low sedimentation rates (∼3 mm ka–1). The sediment consists of variable proportions of fine-grained carbonates, clays, and ice-rafted debris and shows excesses in 210Pb (210Pbxs) over parent 226Ra content, down to ∼1 cm below core top. This 210Pbxs distribution is due to shallow mixing by benthic organisms and (or) diffusion from the sediment–water interface, as also indicated by 137Cs activities. From ∼1 to 7 cm downcore, 210Pb activities closely follow 226Ra activities. Below 7 cm downcore, 226Ra activities are controlled by variable excesses in parent 230Th (230Thxs) resulting from its scavenging in the overlying water column. 226Ra diffusion is observed towards the water column occuring from the upper ∼7 cm of sediment below the seafloor (with a flux of ∼0.043 disintegrations per minute (dpm) cm–2 a–1) and deeper in the sediment below 230Thxs peaks but with lesser fluxes. Both cores show identical 210Pb profiles despite their 1 km bathymetric difference. This suggests negligible 230Th and 210Pb scavenging below water depths of ∼1.6 km, i.e., the bathymetry of the shallower core. In such settings where sedimentation rates are very low and vertical particle rain is the major sediment source, estimates of the actual 210Pbxs require precise knowledge of the 226Ra-supported fraction, which is controlled by 230Thxs, Ra diffusion, and thus sedimentation rates and porosity.

A micropaleontological investigation was conducted on two sediment cores from the Reykjanes Ridge (RR; core LO09-14; 59°12.30′N, 31°05.94′W) and the Faroe–Shetland Channel (FSC; core HM03-133-25; 60°06.55′N, 06°04.18′W) to document hydrographical changes of the North Atlantic Current (NAC) during the Holocene. Dinocyst and coccolith assemblages were analyzed, and quantitative reconstructions of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and sea surface salinities (SSSs) were conducted based on dinocyst assemblages. Both proxies suggest a major reorganization of surface circulation patterns in the northeastern North Atlantic between 7 and 5.4 ka BP. At both sites, SSSs before 6.5–7 ka BP were lower than during the mid-late Holocene, suggesting dispersal of meltwater through the NAC. Long term trends of SSTs, however, show higher than present summer SSTs on the RR from 9.3 to ∼6 ka BP, and lower than present SSTs in the FSC until ca. 5.4 ka BP. The contrasted SST trends at the two sites suggest that decreasing summer insolation was not the only forcing behind hydrographical changes in the region. Decoupling of the NAC and the Slope Current (SC), which both influence the FSC, is proposed as a possible mechanism. We hypothesize that a strong NAC during the early to middle Holocene resulted in a SST increase on the RR and decrease in the FSC. Inversely, a weaker NAC after 5–6 ka BP, leading to decreased SSTs on the RR, would have enhanced the relative contribution of the warmer, saltier SC in the FSC, thus resulting in a regional SST and SSS increase.

We present new Sm–Nd isotope data for sediments from a core located on the continental slope of the St. Pierre Bank of Canada’s east coast. The Nd analyses indicate that the sediments were derived from two principal sources: the North American Shield that yields an average early Proterozoic isotopic signature and a younger Proterozoic signature attributed to Appalachian crustal sources. The Appalachian-sourced sediments predominated during the last glacial maximum (LGM) and were associated with low sedimentation rates (

The impact of the final drainage of Lake Agassiz, some 8.4 ka ago on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation is still debated. The lack of isotopic response in planktic foraminifer records at the outlet of the drainage channel constitutes a puzzling element in this debate. To estimate the response of the 18O–salinity relationship in ocean surface waters to drainage, we use a core raised from southeast Hudson Bay to document δ18O values of lake waters, immediately prior to drainage. Valves of Candona sp. (an ostracod) from lacustrine varved-sediments underlying marine clays, yielded δ18O values clustered around –20.5‰ (versus VPDB (Vienna PeeDee Belemnite)). Assuming a lake bottom temperature of about 0 °C, an isotopic composition of –25‰ (versus VSMOW (Vienna standard mean ocean water)) is calculated for paleolake waters, not unlike values reported for earlier stages of Lake Agassiz. This value is only slightly more negative than those estimated for Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) meltwaters during the last glacial maximum (∼ –21‰), or for the “apparent” freshwater end member diluting modern northwest Atlantic surface waters (–20.3‰ ± 0.4‰). The estimated ∼ –0.1‰ shift of the 18O–salinity relationship of ocean surface waters, in the salinity domain (>34) characterizing the only planktic foraminifer ( Neogloboquadrina pachyderma , Np) then abundant off the drainage outlet, seems barely distinguishable from background noise of Np δ18O records from such environments. Most other similar LIS deglacial events have probably not left any clear isotopic records in deep-sea cores from surrounding basins.

Cores from site HLY0501-05 on the Alaskan margin in the eastern Chukchi Sea were analyzed for their geochemical (organic carbon, δ13Corg, Corg/N, and CaCO3) and palynological (dinocyst, pollen, and spores) content to document oceanographic changes during the Holocene. The chronology of the cores was established from 210Pb dating of near-surface sediments and 14C dating of bivalve shells. The sediments span the last 9000 years, possibly more, but with a gap between the base of the trigger core and top of the piston core. Sedimentation rates are very high (∼156 cm/ka), allowing analyses with a decadal to centennial resolution. The data suggest a shift from a dominantly terrigenous to marine input from the early to late Holocene. Dinocyst assemblages are characterized by relatively high concentrations (600–7200 cysts/cm3) and high species diversity, allowing the use of the modern analogue technique for the reconstruction of sea-ice cover, summer temperature, and salinity. Results indicate a decrease in sea-ice cover and a corresponding, albeit much smaller, increase in summer sea-surface temperature over the past 9000 years. Superimposed on these long-term trends are millennial-scale fluctuations characterized by periods of low sea-ice and high sea-surface temperature and salinity that appear quasi-cyclic with a frequency of about one every 2500–3000 years. The results of this study clearly show that sea-ice cover in the western Arctic Ocean has varied throughout the Holocene. More importantly, there have been times when sea-ice cover was less extensive than at the end of the 20th century.

Determining climate variations over the Holocene requires high-resolution records with well-developed age models. A 40 m long marine sediment core raised from Effingham Inlet, an anoxic fjord on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, yields such a record. Forty six14C accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dates determined from terrestrial plant material form the age model. Downcore sampling at both 5 cm (20 year) and 1.5 cm (7 year) resolution indicates that high-frequency oceanographic variability has prevailed at this site over the last 10 000 years. Spectral analysis of wt.% opal, a proxy for diatom productivity in the basin, reveals the bidecadal and pentadecadal periods of the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) – North Pacific index (NPI) that are related to changes in the strength of the Aleutian Low. Coherence analysis between the Effingham Inlet data and δ18O records from Jellybean Lake (a high elevation site in southwest Yukon) indicates regional coherence at periods of 45, 70, and 510 years between productivity in Effingham Inlet and changes in the Aleutian Low strength. Over the entire Holocene, the strength of decadal variability has changed. Both 20- and 50-year periods are present to some degree in the early Holocene, and only the 50 year period is evident in the late Holocene. These data imply that regime shifts would have been more frequent in the early Holocene relative to the last several thousand years.
