High-resolution topographic modeling has become more accessible due to the development of structure from motion (SfM)-image-matching algorithms in digital photogrammetry. Large archival databases of historical aerial photographs are available in university, public, and government libraries, commonly as paper copies. The photographs can be in poor condition (i.e., deformed by humidity, scratched, or annotated). In addition, the negatives, as well as metadata, may be missing. Processing such photographs using classic stereo-photogrammetry is difficult and, in many instances, impossible. SfM can be applied to these photosets to access the valuable archive of geomorphic changes over the past century. In this paper, we illustrate the utility of the SfM technique using 568 digitized vertical aerial photographs of Mount Meager volcano, located in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. We use the aerial photographs, which span the period from 1947 to 2006, to track glaciers and glacier–landslide interactions on the volcano. Over this period, glaciers have thinned and retreated, interrupted by minor advances in the 1960s and 1970s. Landslides are frequent on the volcano and contribute to debris cover on the glaciers affecting the ablation process. SfM processing of the aerial photographs allowed us to unlock geomorphic information and reconstruct landscape change that would otherwise have been impossible. The results from SfM provide a visually effective way of presenting landscape change to a broad public audience, as a form of virtual geoheritage. This paper reports on the landform assemblages at the northern confluence of the Late Wisconsinan Laurentide and Cordilleran ice sheets with montane and piedmont glaciers in the northern Rockies and southern Mackenzie Mountains. Recent observations in northeastern British Columbia refine our knowledge of the pattern and style of ice sheet retreat, glacial lake formation, and meltwater drainage. At the onset of deglaciation, confluent Laurentide and Cordilleran terminal ice margins lay between 59°N, 124°30′W and 60°N, 125°15′W. From this terminal limit, ice sheets retreated into north-central British Columbia and Yukon Territory, with remnant Cordilleran ice and montane glaciers confined to mountain valleys and the Liard Plateau. Distinctive end moraines are not associated with the retreat of Cordilleran ice in these areas. Laurentide ice retreated northeastward from uplands and the plateaus; then separated into lobes occupying the Fort Nelson and Petitot river valleys. Ice-retreat landforms include recessional end moraines (sometimes overridden and drumlinized), hill-hole pairs, crevasse-fill deposits, De Geer-like ribbed till ridges, hummocky moraines, kames, meltwater features, and glacial lake deposits that fall within the elevation range of glacial Lake Liard and glacial Lake Fort Nelson (ca. 840-380 m). Meltwater and sediment transport into glacial lakes Fort Nelson, Liard, Nahanni, and Mackenzie was sustained by remnant ice in the Liard River and Fort Nelson River drainage basins until the end of glaciation. Optical dating of sand from stabilized parabolic dunes on the Liard Plateau indicates that proglacial conditions, lake formation, and drainage began before 13.0 ± 0.5 ka (calendar years). The Petitot, Fort Nelson, and Liard rivers all occupy spillways incised into glacial deposits and bedrock by meltwater overflow from glacial lakes Peace and Hay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents a case study of sediment, termed soft lodgement till (a product of subglacial deposition by active ice), described previously on the basis of macro-evidence from Poland and Canada but not yet studied in detail in one particular site. The till at Anielinek (about 7 m thick) was examined by macroscopic observation, thin section description, and qualitative and quantitative scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. It shows a macroscopic massive structure and overlies a flat top of glaciolacustrine sediments. These sediments form upward intrusions within the till—owing to the existence of reversed density gradients among the deposits—and the upper parts of the intrusions are tilted in consistent directions within the successive parts of the till. Moreover, SEM images also record uniformly oriented microintrusions within this diamictic material. The occurrence of these macro- and microstructures within the successive parts of the till point to an almost continuous process of intrusion during ongoing deposition of the till and to water saturation of the subglacial environment. Such conditions reduced friction of the glacier bed against its substratum, and glacial debris must have been mainly melt-released from the moving glacier base. This process was responsible for deposition of sediment (soft lodgement till) that was immediately and continuously deformed by glacial stress during the ongoing accretion of debris from the glacier base. This paper develops a technique that utilizes spatial and compositional trends in granite erratics distributed across the eastern and northwestern Queen Elizabeth Islands to discriminate between glacial dispersal trains originating from the Precambrian Shield of Ellesmere Island and the Canadian mainland. The distribution of glacially transported granite erratics in the eastern and northwestern Queen Elizabeth Islands defines a coherent pattern of regional dispersal from the Precambrian Shield of eastern Ellesmere Island. Principal components and cluster analyses demonstrate that most erratics within this dispersal train cluster within the same compositional group. Other members of this group represent outcrops on eastern Ellesmere Island, which define the locations of possible source areas. However, other compositional groups, which are unique to outcrops on the mainland, are absent from this dispersal train. Collectively, these spatial and compositional trends suggest that granite erratics on southwest Ellesmere, Amund Ringnes, and Meighen islands occur within a single dispersal train that resulted from the westward expansion of the Innuitian Ice Sheet from the Precambrian Shield of eastern Ellesmere Island. This technique may determine what differences, if any, exist among the composition of granite erratics deposited by the westward expansion of the Innuitian Ice Sheet across the Queen Elizabeth Islands and those deposited by the northward expansion of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Any such differences may be useful in determining whether granite erratics of presently unknown provenance elsewhere in the Queen Elizabeth Islands are of Laurentide or Innuitian origin. Holocene lateral moraines in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia are commonly composed of multiple drift units related to several glacier advances. In this paper, we document lateral moraine stratigraphy at Lillooet Glacier in the southern Coast Mountains. Five tills, separated by laterally extensive paleosols and layers of large woody debris, were found in three cross-sectional exposures through the northeast lateral moraine and two shallow gullies incised into its steep proximal face. Eighteen new radiocarbon ages constrain the timing of five separate advances of Lillooet Glacier: (1) prior to 3000 14C years BP; (2) ~3000 14C years BP; (3) ~2500 14C years BP; (4) ~1700 to 1400 14C years BP; and (5) during the Little Ice Age (LIA), after 470 14C years BP. The Lillooet Glacier chronology is broadly synchronous with other glacier records from the Coast Mountains. These records collectively demonstrate climate variability at higher frequencies during the late Holocene than is apparent from many paleoecological reconstructions. Reconstructions of glacier fluctuations are often hampered by poor preservation of landforms that predate the extensive LIA advances of the latest Holocene. This special issue reports on some of the results of a multi-disciplinary research program conducted in the Boreal Plains of northwest Alberta and northeast British Columbia. Several innovative approaches to conducting geoscientific research in this remote drift-covered region are presented, including geochemical analysis of bentonites for evaluating kimberlite potential, the use of electromagnetic surveys for mapping buried aggregate deposits, and paleo-topographic mapping techniques to define buried channels. Results of the program include the discovery of several large aggregate deposits, the first kimberlite indicator minerals in northeast British Columbia, a significant sphalerite dispersal train in northwest Alberta, the first documented report of kimberlite-sourced bentonites, and numerous previously unknown interglacial sites. Together these papers provide a greatly enhanced understanding of the glacial history, Quaternary stratigraphy, and kimberlite geology of northwest Alberta and northeast British Columbia and provide an improved framework for resource exploration in the region. Ce numéro spécial fait le point sur quelques résultats d’un programme de recherche multidisciplinaire effectué dans les plaines boréales du nord-ouest de l’Alberta et du nord-est de la Colombie-Britannique. Plusieurs approches innovatrices de recherche géoscientifique dans cette région éloignée recouverte de sédiments glaciaires sont présentées, incluant l’analyse géochimique des bentonites pour l’évaluation du potentiel kimberlitique, l’utilisation de relevés électromagnétiques pour cartographier des dépôts enfouis d’agrégats et des techniques de cartographie paléotopographique dans le but de définir des chenaux enfouis. Les résultats du programme comprennent la découverte de plusieurs grands dépôts d’agrégats, des premiers minéraux indicateurs de kimberlite dans le nord-est de la Colombie-Britannique, une traînée importante de dispersion glaciaire de sphalérite dans le nord-ouest de l’Alberta, la première documentation de bentonites dont la source est une kimberlite et de nombreux sites interglaciaires inconnus à ce jour.
