The southeastern Omineca Belt of the Canadian Cordillera preserves a record of overlapping Barrovian and Buchan metamorphism spanning 180-50 Ma. This paper documents the timing, character, and spatial relationships that define separate domains of Middle Jurassic, Early Cretaceous, and Late Cretaceous deformation and metamorphism, and the nature of the geological interfaces that exist between them. A domain of Early Jurassic deformation (D1) and regional greenschist-facies metamorphism (M1) is cross-cut by Middle Jurassic (174-161 Ma) intrusions. Associated contact aureoles are divided into lower pressure (cordierite-dominated; ∼2.5-3.3 kbar; 1 kbar = 100 MPa) and higher pressure (staurolite-bearing; 3.5-4.2 kbar) subtypes; contact metamorphic kyanite occurs rarely in some staurolite-bearing aureoles. Jurassic structures are progressively overprinted northwards by Early Cretaceous deformation and metamorphism (D2M2), manifested in a tightening of Jurassic structures, development of more pervasive ductile fabrics, and Barrovian metamorphism. The D2M2 domain is the southerly continuation of the 600 km long Selkirk-Monashee-Cariboo metamorphic belt. Mid-Cretaceous intrusions (118-90 Ma) were emplaced throughout the D2M2 domain, the earliest of which contain D2 fabrics, but cut M2 isograds. The D2M2 domain makes a continuous, southeasterly transition into a domain of Late Cretaceous regional Barrovian metamorphism and deformation (D3M3; 94-76 Ma). The interface between these two domains is obscured by the coaxial nature of the deformation and the apparent continuity of the metamorphic zones, resulting in a complex and cryptic interface. Similarities between the D3M3 domain and the Selkirk Crest of Idaho and Washington suggest that this domain is the northerly continuation of the northward-plunging Priest River Complex. The Taku terrane consists of metamorphosed Carboniferous through Triassic marine clastic strata, volcanic rocks, and limestone that occur along the western margin of the Coast Mountains in southeastern Alaska. These rocks are juxtaposed along mid-Cretaceous thrust faults over Jura-Cretaceous basinal strata of the Gravina belt to the west and beneath Proterozoic through Carboniferous metamorphic rocks of the Yukon-Tanana terrane to the east. This paper presents U-Pb ages and Hf isotope analyses of detrital zircons from the Taku terrane, and compares these values with information from the adjacent Wrangellia, Alexander, and northern and southern portions of the Yukon-Tanana terrane (YTTn and YTTs). These comparisons suggest that ( i) Carboniferous strata of the Taku terrane were shed mainly from mid-Paleozoic igneous rocks of YTTs, ( ii) Permian strata of the Taku terrane were shed from mid-Paleozoic igneous rocks and intraformational Lower Permian volcanic rocks of YTTs as well as Upper Permian volcanic rocks exposed in YTTn, and ( iii) Triassic sandstones were shed from mid-Paleozoic igneous rocks of YTTs, whereas conglomerates were shed mainly from mid-Paleozoic arc rocks in YTTn. Hf isotope analyses of Paleozoic zircons record increasing continental input during Silurian-Devonian and Permian phases of magmatism. Similarities in isotopic characteristics, combined with stratigraphic and geochemical information presented by previous workers, suggest that strata of the Taku terrane accumulated on (and partly as lateral equivalents of) rocks of YTTs, and that the combined assemblages formed outboard or along strike of YTTn. The Thompson Nickel Belt marks the boundary between the Archean Superior Province and the Trans-Hudson Orogen in Canada. It comprises Archean gneisses, and Paleoproterozoic rocks with metasediments and metavolcanites (Ospwagan Group) and intrusions. The gneisses are frequently migmatitic and host numerous pegmatites. The western belt boundary is a fault contact with the Kisseynew Domain of the Reindeer Zone. In the south, the transition zone between the belt and the Kisseynew Domain comprises granitoids and a detrital sequence (Grass River Group), part of which grades into turbidites in the Kisseynew Domain. The eastern belt boundary is a diffuse zone where the Archean east-west (E-W) structural trend changes into the north-northeast (NNE) trend of the belt. This paper presents U-Pb ages for granitoids and 207Pb/206Pb detrital zircon ages from the Ospwagan and Grass River groups. Ages and a comparison of events in the belt and in the eastern Reindeer Zone have major implications. The change from stable platform deposits to syn-tectonic filling and emplacement of mafic intrusions in the Ospwagan Group are attributed to the convergence between the Reindeer Zone and the Superior Province at 1891-1885 Ma. At ca. 1850 Ma, continuing convergence led to drowning of marginal basins of the Superior craton and to the development of a transpressive regime in the belt, the onset of which could be as old as ca. 1885 Ma. Metamorphic ages of 1818-1785 record closure of the Kisseynew basin and crustal thickening. Collision of the new continental block with the Superior Province was accommodated by transpression until 1750-1720 Ma. A Paleozoic volcanic assemblage exposed in northern British Columbia, near the Turnagain River, previously considered to be part of an accreted terrane, was reported to be in depositional contact with a part of the Cordilleran miogeocline. This paper presents an integrated field, U–Pb geochronology, Sm–Nd isotopic, and geochemical study across the basal contact of the volcanic assemblage. Strongly evolved εNd(T) values, between –13 and –21, from samples of lower Paleozoic sedimentary rocks exposed below the volcanic rocks, and correlated with Atan – Kechika – Road River – Earn strata of the miogeocline farther east, support a North American miogeoclinal affinity, consistent with previously established regional stratigraphic and structural relationships. Nd isotopic data from the volcanic assemblage contrast significantly with data from the sedimentary rocks and record a mantle source (εNd(T) values between +4.0 and +7.0), consistent with a magmatic arc or back arc; negative Nb anomalies are similarly compatible with either arc- or back-arc-related magmatism. A concordant 339.7 ± 0.6 Ma U–Pb zircon date was obtained from the volcanic assemblage. The mixed gradational contact between the miogeoclinal and volcanic rocks is marked by interlayering of finely laminated grey and green phyllites on the scale of centimetres, with no evidence of a tectonic contact. Bedding at the contact is folded into tight outcrop-scale folds that are intruded by an Early Jurassic (187.5 ± 2.9 Ma) granodiorite. On the basis of all available evidence, the contact is interpreted as a facies transition. This paper provides an integrated field and geochemical study of weakly alkalic, ~360 Ma mafic rocks from the Yukon–Tanana terrane in the Finlayson Lake region, southeastern Yukon. These mafic rocks occur as dykes and sills that crosscut older felsic metavolcanic rocks and metasedimentary rocks (Kudz Ze Kayah unit) or as flows interlayered with carbonaceous metasedimentary rocks. The mafic rocks have signatures similar to those of ocean-island basalts, moderate TiO[sub 2] and P[sub 2] O[sub 5] contents, elevated high field strength element and light rare earth element contents, and ℇNd[sub 350] = +1.1. A subset of the dykes (group 4b) has similar geochemical characteristics but with higher Th/Nb and lower Nb/U ratios, higher Zr and light rare earth element contents, and ℇNd[sub 350] = –2.8. The geochemical and isotopic attributes of these rocks are consistent with formation from either lithospheric or asthenospheric sources during decompression melting of the mantle, with some rocks exhibiting evidence for crustal contamination (group 4b). The alkalic basalts are interpreted to represent ~360 Ma ensialic back-arc rifting and basin generation. It is envisioned that east-dipping subduction, represented by slightly older magmatic suites (Fire Lake unit), was disrupted by subduction hinge roll-back, westward migration of arc magmatism, and the onset of back-arc extension. Decompression melting of the mantle associated with back-arc generation resulted in mantle melting and the formation of the alkalic basalts. The spatial association of this mafic magmatism with crustally derived felsic volcanic rocks and contained volcanogenic massive sulphide mineralization suggests that the associated deposits (Kudz Ze Kayah, GP4F) formed within an ensialic back-arc environment.Cet article présente une étude intégrée de données de terrain et de géochimie de roches mafiques, ~360 Ma, faiblement alcalines, du terrane Yukon–Tanana dans la région du lac Finlayson, dans le sud-est du Yukon. Ces roches mafiques se présentent sous forme de dykes et de filons-couches, qui recoupent des roches métavolcaniques et des roches métasédimentaires (unité Kudz Ze Kayah) plus âgées, ou sous forme de coulées interstratifiées avec des roches métasédimentaires carbonées. This paper concerns the petrogenesis of the 504 ± 3 Ma Mont Chagnon massif, the southern extension of the Orford ophiolite in the Quebec Appalachians. The evolution of this massif is summarized in three stages marked by different magmatic series. In the Late Cambrian, the onset of southeastern subduction of the Iapetus basin generated an immature oceanic island arc made up of light rare-earth-element-depleted tholeiites, now preserved in the massif as a portion of the intrusive crustal unit, the dyke complex, and part of the lower volcanic unit. A phase of arc splitting, and concomitant partial erosion of the crustal section, was shortly followed by the eruption of rhyolite genetically related to felsic and low-Ti dykes, and trondhjemite. The geochemistry of these magmas bear some similarities with boninitic series. We believe these liquids derived from the partial melting of the Iapetus amphibolitized oceanic crust, with that of its Laurentian-derived sediments and nearby peridotite, either found as a trapped sliver above the subducting slab or as the slab itself. The final stage, preserved in the massif as a part of the intrusive section, the upper volcanic rocks, and the late-stage dykes, represents the back-arc opening. An ocean-island component is involved in the back-arc related petrogenetic processes, producing magmas with compositions intermediate between arc tholeiites and enriched back-arc basin basalts. This is the first report that the Iapetus basin was locally closing as early as Late Cambrian in the southern Quebec area.Cet article traite de la pétrogenèse du massif du mont Chagnon, daté à 504 ± 3 Ma, qui est l'extension méridionale de l'ophiolite d'Orford dans les Appalaches du Québec. L'évolution de ce massif est résumée en trois étapes déterminées par des suites magmatiques différentes. Au Cambrien tardif, le début de la subduction vers le sud-est d'Iapetus a crée un arc insulaire océanique immature composé de tholéiites appauvries en terres rares légères, maintenant préservées dans le massif en tant qu'une portion de l'unité crustale intrusive, le complexe de dykes et une partie de l'unité volcanique inférieure. Nous croyons que ces liquides proviennent de la fusion partielle de la croûte amphibolitisée d'Iapetus, de ses sédiments dérivés du craton Laurentia et de la péridotite avoisinante, qui se trouvent soit coincés en tant qu'écaille au-dessus de la lithosphère en subduction ou soit en tant que lithosphère subductée elle-même. L'étape finale, préservée dans le massif en tant qu'une partie de la section intrusive, les roches volcaniques supérieures et les dykes tardifs, représente l'ouverture de l'arrière-arc. New bedrock mapping completed as part of the Nechako NATMAP Project indicates that the area between Babine and Takla lakes in central British Columbia is underlain by rocks of the Early Permian Asitka, Late Triassic Takla, and Early to Middle Jurassic Hazelton volcanic-arc assemblages of the Stikine Terrane. These are cut by large composite stocks of quartz diorite, granodiorite, and quartz monzonite previously mapped as the Late Triassic to Early Jurassic Topley intrusions. New U/Pb (n = 6) and laser [sup 40] Ar/[sup 39] Ar (n = 10) isotopic age dates reported in this paper suggest there are two distinct ages of plutons: the Topley intrusive suite with isotopic ages between 218 and 193 Ma; and, east of Babine Lake, the new Spike Peak intrusive suite with isotopic ages ranging from 179 to 166 Ma. West of the main plutonic belt is a thick volcanic succession of subaerial, porphyritic andesite flows, volcanic breccias, and rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs that have isotopic ages between 185 and 174 Ma. These rocks are assigned to the Saddle Hill Formation of the Hazelton Group. The plutonic roots of this proximal arc assemblage are most likely the coeval and compositionally similar plutons of the Spike Peak intrusive suite that have been unroofed in the area east of the Takla Fault. Major oxide and trace element data support the interpretation that the Topley and Spike Peak granitic rocks formed in a juvenile volcanic-arc environment and that magmatism is related to melts generated above a long-lived subduction zone of unknown orientation.Une nouvelle cartographie effectuée dans le cadre du projet NATMAP Nechako indique que la région entre les lacs Babine et Takla au centre de la Colombie-Britannique est recouverte de roches des assemblages d'arcs volcaniques du terrane de Stikine, soit Asitka du Permien précoce, Takla du Trias tardif et Hazelton du Jurassique précoce à moyen. Ces assemblages sont recoupés par des petits massifs intrusifs composites de diorite quartzique, de granodiorite et de monzonite quartzique qui avaient auparavant été cartographiés en tant que les intrusions Topley, du Trias tardif au Jurassique précoce. Les racines plutoniques de cet assemblage d'arc proximal sont fort probablement les plutons contemporains et à composition similaire de la suite intrusive de Spike Peak qui ont été décapés dans la région à l'est de la faille de Takla.
