Subaerial rise of Earth's first continents took place 3.3–3.2 Ga years ago. This had significant influence on the ocean, atmosphere, and biosphere. Two important sedimentological consequences of continental emersion were (1) development of terrestrial (alluvial fan–fluvial–aeolian) depositional systems and (2) formation of shallow-marine sedimentary basins near the continental margin. Late Paleoarchean–Neoarchean terrestrial deposits, including development of an extensive paleosol around 3.2 Ga, and Meso–Neoarchean shallow-marine deposits have been reported from the Singhbhum Craton, eastern India from several localities. However, lateral and vertical changes in sedimentary facies associations and stratigraphic correlation between these terrestrial to shallow-marine sedimentary deposits have not yet been investigated. In this paper, we have reviewed the sedimentological characteristics of Late Paleoarchean to Neoarchean (3.2–2.8 Ga) stratigraphic successions of the Singhbhum Craton and have discussed sea level change and mode of stratigraphic sequence building. Our analysis shows that Singhbhum granitoid complex was emplaced around 3.3 Ga in an intracontinental setting, resulting in high continental freeboard conditions that triggered terrestrial (alluvial fan–braided fluvial) sedimentation (Dhosrapahar Formation). Continental sedimentation continued until ca. 3.0 Ga. In the eastern (Simlipal Group), western (Birtola Formation), and southwestern (the Mankarchua, Mahagiri, and Keonjhar formations) parts, shallow-marine sedimentation occurred after 3.0 Ga as a result of transgression. However, in the northern part (Dhanjori Formation), continental sedimentation prevailed throughout the Archean. Detrital zircon from three coarse-grained marine siliciclastic rocks was analyzed for U–Pb, Lu–Hf, and trace element compositions to constrain the timing of deposition and sediment provenance of the Cunningham Lake formation (formerly siliciclastic unit of the Sitlika assemblage) in north-central British Columbia. This strategy tests previously proposed sedimentary linkages between the Cache Creek terrane and the westerly rocks of the Stikine terrane. All three samples indicate maximum depositional ages at ca. 205–202 Ma (Rhaetian). The samples contain a predominant ca. 225–215 Ma detrital population, sourced from proximal contemporaneous volcanic arcs, and minor Permian to Middle Triassic and Carboniferous arc-derived detrital populations. The absence of Precambrian grains is consistent with the strongly suprachondritic zircon compositions (εHf(t) = +7 to +20), and indicates exclusively juvenile sources for the Cunningham Lake formation. Late Triassic sources of zircon are not known in the Cache Creek terrane and, except within western Stikine terrane, are uncommon among the Intermontane terranes that amalgamated with the Cache Creek terrane during Late Triassic–Early Jurassic. The Stikine suite (ca. 230–214 Ma) and coeval volcanic rocks in western Stikinia are the most probable sources of Late Triassic detritus for the Cunningham Lake formation. Stikinia's Paleozoic basement is the probable source of Carboniferous detrital zircon. Volcanic arc–backarc complexes in the Cache Creek terrane are the most likely sources of Permian to Middle Triassic detritus in the Intermontane terranes. Accordingly, the siliciclastic rocks of the Cunningham Lake formation represent an overlap sedimentary succession that links Stikinia to the Cache Creek terrane by the latest Triassic. The Thompson Nickel Belt marks the boundary between the Archean Superior Province and the Trans-Hudson Orogen in Canada. It comprises Archean gneisses, and Paleoproterozoic rocks with metasediments and metavolcanites (Ospwagan Group) and intrusions. The gneisses are frequently migmatitic and host numerous pegmatites. The western belt boundary is a fault contact with the Kisseynew Domain of the Reindeer Zone. In the south, the transition zone between the belt and the Kisseynew Domain comprises granitoids and a detrital sequence (Grass River Group), part of which grades into turbidites in the Kisseynew Domain. The eastern belt boundary is a diffuse zone where the Archean east-west (E-W) structural trend changes into the north-northeast (NNE) trend of the belt. This paper presents U-Pb ages for granitoids and 207Pb/206Pb detrital zircon ages from the Ospwagan and Grass River groups. Ages and a comparison of events in the belt and in the eastern Reindeer Zone have major implications. The change from stable platform deposits to syn-tectonic filling and emplacement of mafic intrusions in the Ospwagan Group are attributed to the convergence between the Reindeer Zone and the Superior Province at 1891-1885 Ma. At ca. 1850 Ma, continuing convergence led to drowning of marginal basins of the Superior craton and to the development of a transpressive regime in the belt, the onset of which could be as old as ca. 1885 Ma. Metamorphic ages of 1818-1785 record closure of the Kisseynew basin and crustal thickening. Collision of the new continental block with the Superior Province was accommodated by transpression until 1750-1720 Ma. La ceinture de Thompson est située entre le Craton archéen du Supérieur et l'orogène paléoprotérozoïque du Trans-Hudson, au Canada. Elle comprend des gneiss archéens souvent migmatitiques, et des roches paléoprotéroïques, métasédiments et métavolcanites (Groupe Ospwagan), et intrusions. Glacial sediment research using thin sections began post-1945. Microsedimentology examines sediments at the microscopic level deriving insights into the processes of glacial erosion, transport, and deposition. Two issues exist (1) the difficulty by some in recognizing microstructures in thin section and (2) the absence of quantitative data making data reproduction difficult. The latter is hard to resolve but more image capture and software methodologies are now becoming available at reasonable costs. Thin sections are two-dimensional sections of three-dimensional objects, and this must be considered when measurements, fabrics and other data are assessed. Research into the microaspects of glacial sediments followed a typical scientific trajectory: thin sections description with little uniformity or common "language" for observed microstructures: standardization allowed comparison between different sediments; with standardization, came an open-ended classification; and with cross-comparison with multiple thin sections—a quantitative means of study needs developed. It has become apparent that the basic principles of structural geology had to be applied. Thus, micromorphology has subsumed into a microsedimentological study of glacial sediments where stress parameters, structural fabrics and the mapping of deformation structures and contextual integration allows an understanding of how these sediments have been formed. Examples of the development stages of glacial micromorphology/sedimentology are presented here as well as discussion of future avenues of study. In addition, multiple thin sections are used to illustrate the many aspects of glacial micromorphology and the parameters necessary to understand glacial sedimentology and the processes of glacial sedimentation. The Kamouraska Formation is a quartz-arenitic unit of latest Cambrian - earliest Ordovician age in the Quebec Appalachians that was deposited by hyperconcentrated to concentrated density flows in a meandering submarine canyon on the continental slope bordering the Iapetus Ocean, as outlined in a companion paper. Detailed petrographic study of the quartz arenites of the Kamouraska Formation combined with scanning electron microscopy of grain surface textures suggests that the quartz sands are of eolian origin having been derived from an inland desert or, less likely, a barrier beach dune system. Transport of the mature quartz-arenitic sand onto the shelf and deposition into the deep sea was not accompanied by substantial mixing with material from other sources thus preserving the inherited eolian characteristics. A modern analogue for the eolian interpretation of the deep-sea quartz-arenite beds is as follows: thick, Late Pleistocene eolian sand beds on a modern abyssal plain in the East Atlantic referred to as eolian-sand turbidites that were deposited in the deep sea during glacial sea level lowstands when eolian sand transport to canyon heads was enabled by an exposed and shortened shelf. Similarly, an established sea level lowstand at the Cambro-Ordovician boundary would have facilitated the introduction of eolian sand of the Kamouraska Foundation into canyon heads on the upper slope from where turbidity currents and related density flows were triggered. Correlation of the Kamouraska Formation with the quartz arenites of the Cairnside Formation of Quebec (Keeseville Formation in northern New York State, Nepean Formation in southern Ontario) links the deep-sea deposits with remnants of an inland dune system. The Mackenzie Trough provides a high resolution signal for paleoceanography as a result of high sedimentation rates at the mouth of the Mackenzie River. Three cores were collected along a transect covering a depth range of 58–671 m and the time period of the last 11 500 cal BP. Prior to the last ~10 000 cal BP, the distal core is characterized by laminated sediment and a foraminiferal fauna of Arctic Bottom Water calcareous species and abundant planktic foraminifera suggesting little freshwater runoff and (or) perennial sea-ice cover. This occurs at a similar time as laminated sediments from the west of this site, which have been suggested to be part of the Lake Agassiz flood outburst and (or) cold period. If this outburst occurred, the very positive oxygen isotope values from our core (PC3; >+3.0 ppm) indicate that it did not flow through the Mackenzie Trough. After 9000 cal BP, the faunas in the three cores differ because of timing and different water depths. However, it is possible to see a progression of cold saline water prior to 10 000 cal BP, with a freshening of surface water after 10 000 cal BP where tintinnids (brackish water ciliates) occur with incursions of deep water Arctic calcareous species to ~3000 years BP. A sequence of mixed faunas appears as sea ice returns, at least periodically in the last 3000 cal BP; but (in core PC2 only) a return to more sea ice is recorded by both foraminifera and dinocysts in the last few hundred years. La fosse du Mackenzie fournit un signal à haute résolution pour la paléocéanographie en raison des taux élevés de sédimentation à l’embouchure de la rivière Mackenzie. Multiproxy analysis of a 38 m long sediment core recovered from the Vancouver Island margin (48.97°N, 127.04°W, water depth 1243 m) has yielded a millennial-scale history of upwelling and export production over the last ~50 ka. Higher concentrations of marine organic carbon, opal, and trace Mo suggest that production was higher, and sedimentary pore waters more anoxic, during the warm Holocene, Bølling–Allerød, and interstadial events between 31 and 44 ka BP. Relatively lower production and higher inputs of terrigenous organic matter occurred during the last glacial (14.7–31 ka BP; Cordilleran ice sheet proximal to coring site at ~19.5 ka BP) and from 44–50.4 ka BP. Enrichments in sedimentary δ15N during interstadial events are interpreted to reflect episodic delivery and upwelling of isotopically heavy nitrate to the surface waters and subsequent vectoring to the seafloor via settling planktonic detritus. Similar patterns are seen in southern California and other areas along the western margin of North America, implying that heavier nitrate generated by denitrification in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific has in the past been carried northward in the California Undercurrent at least as far as central Vancouver Island. This inference is consistent with modern hydrographic observations in the region. Comparison of the coherent Vancouver Island, Oregon, California, and northwest Mexico margin records with late Pleistocene climate history in Greenland reinforces the conclusion that a tight physical and biogeochemical coupling has existed for at least 50 ka between the North Atlantic and North American margin waters, including those off Vancouver Island. Une analyse de multiples indicateurs substituts dans une carotte de sédiments de 38 m prélevée à la limite de l’île de Vancouver (48,97°N, 127,04°O, profondeur d’eau de 1243 m) a donné un historique d’échelle millénaire de remontée d’eau et de production au cours des derniers 50 milliers d’années. Des concentrations plus élevées de carbone organique marin, d’opale et de traces de Mo suggèrent une la production plus élevée et des eaux de pores sédimentaires plus anoxiques au cours de l’Holocène chaud, du Bølling–Allerød et des événements interstadiaires il y a entre 31 et 44 milliers d’années avant le présent (ka BP). Il y avait relativement moins de production et plus d’intrants de matière organique terrigène durant la dernière période glaciaire (14,7–31 ka BP; l’Inlandsis de la Cordillère était présent à proximité du site de carottage vers 19,5 ka BP) et de 44–50,4 ka BP. Cores from site HLY0501-05 on the Alaskan margin in the eastern Chukchi Sea were analyzed for their geochemical (organic carbon, δ13Corg, Corg/N, and CaCO3) and palynological (dinocyst, pollen, and spores) content to document oceanographic changes during the Holocene. The chronology of the cores was established from 210Pb dating of near-surface sediments and 14C dating of bivalve shells. The sediments span the last 9000 years, possibly more, but with a gap between the base of the trigger core and top of the piston core. Sedimentation rates are very high (~156 cm/ka), allowing analyses with a decadal to centennial resolution. The data suggest a shift from a dominantly terrigenous to marine input from the early to late Holocene. Dinocyst assemblages are characterized by relatively high concentrations (600–7200 cysts/cm3) and high species diversity, allowing the use of the modern analogue technique for the reconstruction of sea-ice cover, summer temperature, and salinity. Results indicate a decrease in sea-ice cover and a corresponding, albeit much smaller, increase in summer sea-surface temperature over the past 9000 years. Superimposed on these long-term trends are millennial-scale fluctuations characterized by periods of low sea-ice and high sea-surface temperature and salinity that appear quasi-cyclic with a frequency of about one every 2500–3000 years. The results of this study clearly show that sea-ice cover in the western Arctic Ocean has varied throughout the Holocene. More importantly, there have been times when sea-ice cover was less extensive than at the end of the 20th century. La chronologie des carottes a été déterminée à partir d’une datation 210Pb des sédiments près de la surface et d’une datation 14C de coquilles de bivalves. Les sédiments couvrent les derniers 9000 ans, possiblement plus, mais avec une lacune entre la base de la carotte prélevée par carottier à clapet et le haut de la carotte prélevée par carottier à piston. Les taux de sédimentation sont très élevés (~156 cm/ka), permettant des analyses avec une résolution variant de décennale à centennale. Les données suggèrent un approvisionnement qui a passé de surtout terrigène à marin entre l’Holocène précoce et tardif. Les assemblages de sont caractérisés par des concentrations relativement hautes de dinokystes (600–7200 par cm3) et une diversité élevée permettant l’utilisation d’une technique analogique moderne pour la reconstruction de la couverture des glaces de mer, des températures estivales et de la salinité. Les résultats indiquent une diminution de la couverture des glaces de mer et une augmentation, quoique bien moindre, de la température estivale de la surface de la mer au cours des 9000 dernières années. À ces tendances à long terme se superposent des fluctuations à l’échelle millénaire, caractérisées par des périodes de mince glace de mer et de températures élevées de la surface de la mer et une forte salinité qui semblent quasi cycliques, avec une période de récurrence d’une fois tous les 2500 à 3000 ans. The article focuses on the views of the authors' on the comments of geologists F. Lagroix and Subir K. Banerjee on the research on sedimentation and soil formation in loess deposits of Alaska conducted by the authors. The authors opine that Lagroix and Banerjee have misinterpreted their statements about glacial paleowinds and Holocene winds in the Yukon River valley. They also believe that Lagroix and Banerjee do not give regard to glacial erosion and deposition during stratigraphy.
