This paper provides an integrated field and geochemical study of weakly alkalic, ~360 Ma mafic rocks from the Yukon–Tanana terrane in the Finlayson Lake region, southeastern Yukon. These mafic rocks occur as dykes and sills that crosscut older felsic metavolcanic rocks and metasedimentary rocks (Kudz Ze Kayah unit) or as flows interlayered with carbonaceous metasedimentary rocks. The mafic rocks have signatures similar to those of ocean-island basalts, moderate TiO[sub 2] and P[sub 2] O[sub 5] contents, elevated high field strength element and light rare earth element contents, and ℇNd[sub 350] = +1.1. A subset of the dykes (group 4b) has similar geochemical characteristics but with higher Th/Nb and lower Nb/U ratios, higher Zr and light rare earth element contents, and ℇNd[sub 350] = –2.8. The geochemical and isotopic attributes of these rocks are consistent with formation from either lithospheric or asthenospheric sources during decompression melting of the mantle, with some rocks exhibiting evidence for crustal contamination (group 4b). The alkalic basalts are interpreted to represent ~360 Ma ensialic back-arc rifting and basin generation. It is envisioned that east-dipping subduction, represented by slightly older magmatic suites (Fire Lake unit), was disrupted by subduction hinge roll-back, westward migration of arc magmatism, and the onset of back-arc extension. Decompression melting of the mantle associated with back-arc generation resulted in mantle melting and the formation of the alkalic basalts. The spatial association of this mafic magmatism with crustally derived felsic volcanic rocks and contained volcanogenic massive sulphide mineralization suggests that the associated deposits (Kudz Ze Kayah, GP4F) formed within an ensialic back-arc environment.Cet article présente une étude intégrée de données de terrain et de géochimie de roches mafiques, ~360 Ma, faiblement alcalines, du terrane Yukon–Tanana dans la région du lac Finlayson, dans le sud-est du Yukon. Ces roches mafiques se présentent sous forme de dykes et de filons-couches, qui recoupent des roches métavolcaniques et des roches métasédimentaires (unité Kudz Ze Kayah) plus âgées, ou sous forme de coulées interstratifiées avec des roches métasédimentaires carbonées. John Tuzo Wilson (1908-1993) was one of the greatest Canadian scientists of the 20th century. His contributions to Earth Sciences, leading the formulation of the theory of plate tectonics, have revolutionized our understanding of how the planet Earth works and evolved over the past 4 billion years. This 50th anniversary special issue of the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences is dedicated in honour of John Tuzo Wilson, who inspired tens of thousands of students all around the world to study the Earth. This special issue contains 12 papers dealing with various aspects of the 'Wilson Cycle' in the geologic record, plate tectonics, mantle plumes, and how John Tuzo Wilson accepted 'continental drift' and formulated the theory of plate tectonics. The contributions have mostly been made by geoscientists who directly or indirectly associated with John Tuzo Wilson and have contributed significantly to the plate tectonics paradigm. I outline and discuss my career in the context of the history of structural geology and tectonics, the progressive developments that led to plate tectonics, the people who have encouraged and influenced me, the events that changed my life, my fifty six doctoral students who have taught me so much, and my principal interests in tectonics. I discuss, in particular, nine topics of special current interest: the evolution of Tibet, the geomorphology of the British Isles, transtension, the Precambrian, the complexities of plate boundary evolution, Appalachian-Caledonian evolution, ophiolites, the structure and strength of the lithosphere, and the subducting slab. Je presente un survol de ma carriere et une discussion de cette derniere dans le contexte de l'histoire de la geologie structurale et de la tectonique, des avancees progressives qui ont mene a la tectonique des plaques, des personnes qui m'ont encourage et influence, des evenements qui ont change ma vie, de mes 50 etudiants au doctorat qui m'ont tant appris et de mes principaux interets en tectonique. J'aborde plus particulierement neuf sujets d'interet actuel, soit l'evolution du Tibet, la geomorphologie des iles britanniques, la transtension, le Precambrien, les complexites de l'evolution des limites de plaques, l'evolution des Appalaches-Caledonides, les ophiolites, la structure et la resistance de la lithosphere et la plaque plongeante. The first Special Issue published by the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences in the field of planetary sciences consists of a collection of nine papers on astromaterials, planetary geology, and Earth-based analogues. We describe the milestones that led to the development of the planetary geology and geophysics (PG&G) community in Canada over the past 5 years, which culminated in record-breaking attendance at a special session of the 2011 GAC-MAC-SEG-SGA Joint Annual Meeting held in Ottawa. The idea of a Special Issue was met with enthusiasm by delegates from coast to coast. By connecting the fields of earth and planetary sciences, the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences pioneers a new vision for geoscience that expands the options available to Canadians who wish to publish their research at home. Numerical models offer powerful insights into tectonic processes, especially when their validity can be tested against geological and geophysical observations from natural orogenic belts. Here we explain some of the criteria for success in integrating orogenic models with data, using examples from the Grenville Orogen. Model designs must be simplified by comparison with nature to illuminate the first-order processes that control orogenic evolution, which limits the extent to which model results can reproduce geological observations. For the western Grenville Orogen, observed variations in geological properties are represented by lower crustal blocks with strength decreasing from the exterior to the interior of the model. GO-series models with this design reproduce the first-order crustal architecture of the Georgian Bay and Montréal – Val d’Or Lithoprobe transects. Both constant-convergence and stop-convergence models produce similar geometries, but only stop-convergence models produce normal-sense shear zones like those observed. EGO-series models, incorporating an initial weak zone bounded by stronger lower crustal blocks, predict exhumation of high-pressure rocks as observed in the eastern Grenville Orogen, although other aspects of these model results are not as successful. The single most important test of a geodynamic model is its ability to integrate diverse and independent observations in a self-consistent manner. Other criteria include consistency with crustal-scale geometry and structural and metamorphic histories. By these criteria, the present models account reasonably well for the syn- and post-convergent evolution of the western Grenville Orogen, but further work is required to produce a fully satisfactory model for the eastern end of the system. Plusieurs modèles numériques offrent des aperçus révélateurs de processus tectoniques, surtout lorsqu’ils peuvent être validés par rapport à des observations géologiques et géophysiques de ceintures orogéniques naturelles. Dans cet article, nous expliquons quelques critères pour réussir l’intégration de modèles orogéniques avec les données, en utilisant des exemples de l’orogène de Grenville. Les conceptions des modèles doivent être simplifiées par rapport à la nature afin de souligner les processus de premier ordre qui contrôlent l’évolution de l’orogène, ce qui limite l’étendue selon laquelle les résultats des modèles peuvent reproduire les observations géologiques. La vérification la plus importante d’un modèle géodynamique est sa capacité d’intégrer des observations diverses et indépendantes d’une manière autoconsistante. D’autres critères comprennent la conformité avec la géométrie à l’échelle de la croûte et les historiques de structure et de métamorphisme. Late Paleoproterozoic (1900–1600 Ma) tectonothermal activity on all borders of the Archean Wyoming Province has long been established by low-precision K–Ar and Rb–Sr studies. However, recent tectonic models advanced for supercontinent aggregation require improved constraints on the timing of tectonothermal activity along major boundaries. On its northwestern boundary, the Great Falls tectonic zone separates the Archean Wyoming and Hearne provinces. Recently published U/Pb ages and geochemical data reveal the presence of a Paleoproterozoic (ca. 1860 Ma) marginal-arc magmatic complex along a portion of the Great Falls tectonic zone in central Montana. We present nine new [sup 40] Ar/[sup 39] Ar mineral ages (on hornblende and biotite) from these same arc rocks, which indicate ca. 1800 Ma thermal activity (>500°C) and subsequent rapid cooling to below 300°C by 1775 Ma. This new data set constrains the timing of Wyoming–Hearne collision to between 1860 and 1800 Ma and the timing of last significant tectonothermal activity of this portion of the Great Falls tectonic zone (1800–1775 Ma). We note that our data add to a growing geochronologic database indicating ca. 1800 Ma tectonothermal activity (via either initial suturing or continued tectonic activity) associated with Paleoproterozoic docking of the Wyoming Province with Laurentia.L'activité tectonothermique au Paléoprotérozoïque tardif (1900 Ma à 1600 Ma) a été établie depuis longtemps par des études K–Ar et Rb–Sr de faible précision sur tout le long des bordures de la Province archéenne de Wyoming. Upper Carboniferous (Stephanian) coal measures of the Sydney Basin are deformed by reverse faults and folds with dips of up to 50° on the limbs. These structures represent compressional or transpressional events (Donkin Episode) of unknown sequence and timing. Offshore swath-bathymetry data indicate that northwest-striking reverse faults are folded by prominent northeast-trending folds. Vitrinite reflectance patterns of oriented coal samples from the fold limbs are uniaxial negative, with minimum reflectance axes (R[sub min] ) near-normal to bedding and fanning across fold axes. This pattern implies that the bulk of coalification took place through burial compaction without directed horizontal stress, prior to the deformation that produced the folds. Slight divergence between R[sub min] axes and poles to bedding may reflect slight tilting, associated with differential subsidence or early reverse faulting, before or during coalification, or may lie within analytical error. One moderately biaxial sample suggests that some deformation accompanied coalification locally. Available apatite fission-track data for the Sydney Basin indicate that cooling of the coal measures to below 100 ± 20°C was underway by the Middle to Late Triassic or earlier. Because cooling implies that coalification was largely complete, the fission-track results are compatible with latest Paleozoic or early Mesozoic deformation. We infer that the Donkin Episode represents late Alleghanian (Permian?) compression within the Appalachian Orogen. If so, the Sydney structures are manifestations of a little-known tectonic episode in Atlantic Canada. However, Mesozoic–Cenozoic deformation cannot be ruled out.Les séries houillères du bassin de Sydney (Carbonifère supérieur - Stéphanien) sont déformées par des failles inverses et des plis déversés dont les flancs atteignent des pendages de 50º. Ces structures représentent des événements de compression ou de transpression (épisode Donkin) dont la séquence et la synchronisation sont inconnues. Les données de bathymétrie par secteurs au large indiquent que les failles inverses à direction nord-ouest sont pliées par des plis proéminents à tendance nord-est. Les patrons du facteur de réflexion de la vitrinite provenant d'échantillons de charbon orientés prélevés sur les flancs des plis sont uniaxes négatifs, avec des axes de réflectance minimum (R[sub min] ) presque perpendiculaires au litage et se dispersant en travers des axes de plis. Pour le bassin de Sydney, les données disponibles de datation par traces de fission sur l'apatite indiquent que le refroidissement des séries houillères à des températures inférieures à 100 ± 20 ºC était déjà en cours au Trias moyen à tardif ou plus tôt. Puisque le refroidissement implique que la carbonisation était presque terminée, les résultats de datation par traces de fission concordent avec la déformation au Paléozoïque terminal ou au Mésozoïque précoce. Nous concluons que l'épisode Donkin représente une compression à l'Alléghanien tardif (Permien ?) à l'intérieur de l'orogène des Appalaches. Si tel est le cas, les structures de Sydney sont des évidences d'un épisode tectonique peu connu au Canada Atlantique. Paleoproterozoic granitoid rocks in the Island Harbour Bay area (Kaipokok domain, Makkovik Province, Labrador) are divided into four separate suites on the basis of field relations, petrology, and age. The redefined Island Harbour Bay plutonic suite consists of ca. 1895–1870 Ma dioritic to granitic (mainly granodioritic and granitic) units. The rocks are variably foliated as a result of emplacement under amphibolite-facies conditions in a dextral transpressive regime during Andean-type subduction. The dominant mafic mineral is biotite, and accessory epidote, allanite, and titanite are abundant. The suite is calc-alkalic, but with rare-earth element patterns similar to those of Archean tonalitic–trondhjemitic–granodioritic suites. It is interpreted to have formed deep in an Andean-type magmatic arc at the margin of the Nain continent. In contrast, the younger Hares Islands and Drunken Harbour granites (emplaced at ca. 1805 and 1790 Ma, respectively) were part of widespread late-orogenic magmatic activity in the Makkovik Province. In contrast to the Island Harbour Bay plutonic suite, these units retain igneous textures and are either unfoliated or display magmatic foliation, locally modified by emplacement in active shear zones. The ca. 1716 Ma Blacklers Bight granite varies from porphyritic to equigranular, is fluorite-bearing, and has chemical features approaching those of continental A-type granites. Similar granite occurs farther south in the Makkovik Province, reflecting widespread anorogenic magmatic activity at that time, perhaps related to mafic magma underplating. Variable interaction with Archean (Nain Province) crust by granitic magmas of all three ages is evidenced by ℇ[sub Nd ] values ranging from –7.2 to –2.5.Les roches granitoïdes paléoprotérozoïques de la région de Island Harbour Bay (domaine de Kaipokok, province de Makkovik, au Labrador) sont divisées en quatre suites distinctes selon les relations de terrain, la pétrologie et l'âge. La suite plutonique redéfinie de Island Habour Bay est composée d'unités dioritiques à granitiques (surtout granodioritiques et granitiques), ca. 1895-1870 Ma. La foliation des roches est variable en raison de leur mise en place sous des conditions de faciès de l'amphibolite dans un régime transpressif dextre durant une subduction de type andin. Le minéral mafique dominant est la biotite; l'épidote, l'allanite et la titanite abondent en tant que minéraux accessoires. À titre de comparaison, les granites plus jeunes de Hares Island et de Drunken Harbour (respectivement mis en place il y a environ 1805 et 1790 Ma) faisaient partie d'une vaste activité magmatique tardi-orogénique dans la province de Makkovik. Contrairement à la suite plutonique Island Harbour Bay, ces unités ont conservé des textures ignées et elles sont soit sans foliation ou soit avec foliation magmatique, modifiée localement par la mise en place de zones de cisaillement actives. Le granite de Blacklers Bight, ca. 1716 Ma, varie de porphyrique à isogranulaire, il comporte de la fluorine et possède des caractéristiques qui rappellent celles des granites de type A. On retrouve un granite semblable plus au sud dans la province de Makkovik, démontrant qu'à cette époque il y avait une activité magmatique anorogénique généralisée, possiblement reliée à une remontée de magma mafique sous les plaques. Although Earth is the only known planet on which plate tectonics operates, many small- and large-scale tectonic landforms indicate that deformational processes also occur on the other rocky planets. Although the mechanisms of deformation differ on Mercury, Venus, and Mars, the surface manifestations of their tectonics are frequently very similar to those found on Earth. Furthermore, tectonic processes invoked to explain deformation on Earth before the recognition of horizontal mobility of tectonic plates remain relevant for the other rocky planets. These connections highlight the importance of drawing analogies between the rocky planets for characterizing deformation of their lithospheres and for describing, applying appropriate nomenclature, and understanding the formation of their resulting tectonic structures. Here we characterize and compare the lithospheres of the rocky planets, describe structures of interest and where we study them, provide examples of how historic views on geology are applicable to planetary tectonics, and then apply these concepts to Mercury, Venus, and Mars.
