The Laird Lake property, southwest Red Lake greenstone belt, straddles the contact between the Balmer (2.99–2.96 Ga) and the Confederation (2.74–2.73 Ga) assemblages. The property is 10 km along strike from the Madsen and Starrat–Olsen Au mines that are hosted near the contact. The Balmer assemblage consists of fine-grained, aphyric, locally pillowed mafic volcanic rocks, ultramafic intrusive and volcanic rocks with flow breccia textures hosting local spinifex-bearing clasts, and banded-iron formations. In contrast, the Confederation assemblage comprises porphyritic mafic volcanic rocks intercalated with intermediate to felsic volcanic rocks that include crystal lapilli tuffs, crystal tuffs, and tuffs. The Balmer assemblage is composed of tholeiitic mafic volcanic rocks with minor Al-undepleted komatiites, whereas the Confederation assemblage is calc–alkalic. Neodymium isotopes, in conjunction with trace element geochemistry, suggests that parts of the Balmer assemblage were weakly contaminated by an older intermediate basement. Both arc and back-arc volcanism occurs in the Confederation assemblage, with the arc rocks showing a stronger crustal component than the back-arc rocks. A maximum U–Pb age of 2741 ± 19 Ma for a crystal tuff and an age of 2737.68 ± 0.79 Ma for a diorite are consistent with a Confederation assemblage affinity for the intermediate calc–alkaline rocks south of the Au-bearing horizon. The Balmer assemblage represents an oceanic plateau formed by plume magmatism on the margins of the North Caribou Terrane, whereas the Confederation assemblage at Laird Lake formed in an oceanic arc setting where both arc and back-arc volcanism occurred simultaneously. There are numerous Neoarchean metasedimentary rock packages in the Slave craton, and they serve as important archives of tectonic processes. Little is documented on the Neoarchean sedimentary packages of the Winter Lake greenstone belt of the central Slave craton, however, and their interpretation can aid in the understanding of the final stages of Slave craton amalgamation. This project investigates the depositional environments and tectonic settings of the Itchen Formation and Sherpa Formation of the Winter Lake greenstone belt. Our study provides constraints for reconstructing the Neoarchean evolution of the central Slave craton through bedrock mapping and facies analysis. The Itchen Formation consists of submature mudstone, siltstone, and sandstone, with preserved graded bedding, planar bedding, and flame structures. Unconformably overlying the Itchen Formation is the Sherpa Formation, which is dominated by polymictic conglomerates and coarse-grained sandstones with preserved cross-bedding, imbricated clasts, and scour surfaces. The Itchen Formation is interpreted to have been deposited in a convergent basin (i.e., retro-arc foreland basin), where two facies associations outline turbidite and suspension sedimentation consistent with submarine fan deposition on a continental slope and a basin floor environment. By contrast, the Sherpa Formation has three facies associations representing dominantly alluvial–fluvial environments in terrestrial–marine–lacustrine settings deposited in pull-apart basins resulting from transtensional forces associated with the Beniah fault zone. In orogenic gold systems, the source of the fluids and the processes leading to mobilization, transport, and deposition of gold remain debated. Most studies focus on endowed rather than on gold-poor orogenic systems to unravel the "key" parameters of gold mineralizing processes. Here, we present stable isotope (O, H) data from the Moly-Desgagné–Guercheville fault system (gold-free to low gold endowment) in the Chibougamau area, Abitibi greenstone belt, Canada. The gold-free Moly-Desgagné showing and nearby poorly endowed Hazeur showing and Monster Lake deposit share similar features typical of orogenic systems. The stable isotope compositions of tourmaline and quartz from the Moly-Desgagné–Guercheville fault system also display similar characteristics, such as (1) temperature of vein formation of 345 ± 86 °C (1σ); (2) fluid mixing between an upper crustal reservoir (low T – high δD – low δ18O) and a metamorphic water reservoir (high T – low δD – high δ18O); and (3) positive δDfluid values consistent with multiple boiling-condensation cycles related to fault-valve processes. These characteristics are similar to those from the gold-endowed Val-d'Or vein field. The difference in gold endowment between the Moly-Desgagné–Guercheville and Val-d'Or vein fields may be related to the nature of the fault system (i.e., terrane-bounding or "intragreenstone belt") and the volume and (or) composition (i.e., gold, its ligands, CO2) of the fluid source rocks. The collaborative federal–provincial Southern Indian Lake project in north-central Manitoba covered an area of more than 3500 km2 of the Trans-Hudson orogen. Regional-scale geological mapping, sampling, and lithogeochemical, isotopic, and geochronological studies resulted in the identification of distinct assemblages of supracrustal rocks and varied episodes of plutonism. A granodiorite gneiss dated at ca. 2520 Ma is interpreted to represent the basement of the Southern Indian domain and is considered a separate crustal domain, named the Partridge Breast block. The Churchill River assemblage is composed of juvenile pillow basalt with intervening clastic sedimentary rocks, possibly a reflection of plume magmatism related to initial rifting of the Hearne craton margin. The Pukatawakan Bay assemblage consists mainly of massive to pillowed, juvenile metabasaltic rocks and associated basinal metasedimentary rocks. The Partridge Breast Lake assemblage is dominated by continental-arc volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks associated with basinal metasedimentary rocks. The Strawberry Island assemblage, consisting of arenite and polymictic conglomerate, is interpreted to have been deposited in a foreland-basin basin or intra-orogen pull-apart basin environment. The Whyme Bay assemblage is characterized by fluvial-alluvial orogenic sediments and is temporally linked to the Sickle Group rocks in the Lynn Lake greenstone belt. Granitoid rocks, dominantly monzogranite and granodiorite, range in age from ca. 1890 to 1830 Ma and occur throughout the Southern Indian domain, and intermediate and mafic intrusions of similar ages are also present. Some of the world's largest orogenic gold deposits are hosted within granite-greenstone subprovinces of the Superior Province of Canada. The known gold endowment of the western Wabigoon subprovince is much less than that of the Abitibi subprovince, despite both Neoarchean subprovinces sharing similar structural and metallogenic histories. Further, the relationship between regional deformation and orogenic gold mineralizing events in the western Wabigoon subprovince is poorly constrained in comparison with other greenstone belts within the Superior Province. New structural mapping of the Dryden area of the western Wabigoon subprovince indicates that it experienced a N–S shortening event (D1), circa 2705–2695 Ma, which reactivated, or initiated the formation of, the E–W-trending Wabigoon and Mosher Bay – Washeibemaga deformation zones (Wdz and MBWdz, respectively). Following the D1 event, after 2695 Ma, a protracted period of NNW–SSE shortening (D2) localized transpression along the Manitou Dinorwic deformation zone (MDdz), which is spatially associated with orogenic gold systems, including the Goldlund deposit (∼1.7 Moz Au) and Kenwest prospect (∼0.3 Moz Au). During D2, the MDdz experienced NW-over-SE sinistral transpression, while the Wdz and MBWdz experienced N-over-S dextral-sense movement. U–Pb geochronology of vein-hosted xenotime from the Goldlund deposit and Kenwest prospect indicate that the main hydrothermal event, and likely gold mineralization, occurred syn- to late-D2 deformation around 2664 ± 8.3 Ma. A second population of xenotime, and overgrowths, recorded a younger hydrothermal overprint between ∼2590 and ∼2580 Ma. These ages are comparable with other absolute geochronology data on hydrothermal events in the gold-rich Abitibi subprovince. The structural evolution and timing of orogenic hydrothermal events in the western Wabigoon subprovince are broadly similar to the Abitibi subprovince. Therefore, we propose that the structural evolution and timing of individual greenstone belts is not the primary controlling factor on their bulk gold endowment. Nevertheless, orogenic gold deposits are spatially associated with major D2 deformation zones and linked to widespread hydrothermal event(s), spanning 2680–2660 Ma across the southern Superior Province. Magmatism during the maturation phase of Archean greenstone belts produced voluminous tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) suites, as well as a lesser amount of tonalite–trondhjemite–diorite (TTD) suites. Such TTD suites have recently been recognized in the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt, on the southern flank of the Superior Craton, Canada, but their source(s), differentiation processes, and depths of emplacement remain poorly constrained. The Neoarchean Eau Jaune Complex lies in the northeastern corner of the Abitibi greenstone belt and represents one of the most voluminous tonalite-dominated and diorite-bearing intrusive suites of the Chibougamau region. This TTD suite comprises six intrusive phases with distinct petrology and chemistry. All units were emplaced as laccolith-like intrusions injected along discontinuities within the volcanic succession at ca. 2724 Ma (U–Pb zircon dating), during the synvolcanic interval (i.e., construction and maturation phase), at a depth of approximately 7–8 km. The most heavy rare-earth element (HREE)-depleted phases (granodiorite, tonalite, and trondhjemite) correspond to magmas that fractionated amphibole and were likely produced by partial melting of a garnet- and titanate-bearing amphibolite, akin to TTG magmas. The least HREE-depleted phases are dioritic in composition and correspond to mantle-derived magmas that may have interacted with TTG melts. This indicates interaction between coeval mantle-derived and crustal melts during the maturation phase of the Abitibi greenstone belt. Models formulated to address the geodynamic evolution of greenstone belts must account for the coeval production of basalt-derived (TTG suites) and mantle-derived (tholeiitic magmatism) melts occasionally interacting to form TTD suites. Trace elements in native gold provide a "fingerprint" that tends to be unique to individual gold deposits. Fingerprinting can distinguish gold sources and potentially yield insights into geochemical processes operating during gold deposit formation. Native gold grains come from three historical gold ore deposits: Hollinger, McIntyre (quartz-veined ore), and Aunor near Timmins, Ontario, at the western end of the Porcupine gold camp and the southwestern part of the Abitibi greenstone belt. Laser ablation – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (LA–ICP–MS) trace element concentrations were determined on 20–25 µm wide, 300 µm long rastor trails in ∼60 native gold grains. Analyses used Ag as an internal standard with Ag and Au determined by a scanning electron microscope with an energy dispersive spectrometer. The London Bullion Market AuRM2 reference material served as the external standard for 21 trace element analytes (Al, As, Bi, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Pd, Pt, Rh, Sb, Se, Si, Sn, Te, Ti, Zn; Se generally below detection in samples). Trace elements in native gold associate according to Goldschmidt's classification of elements strongly suggesting that element behaviour in native Au is not random. Such element behaviour suggests that samples from each Timmins deposit formed under similar but slightly variable geochemical conditions. Chalcophile and siderophile elements provide the most compelling fingerprints of the three ore deposits and appear to be mostly in solid solution in Au. Lithophile elements are not very useful for distinguishing these deposits and element concentrations may be controlled by microinclusions such as tourmaline. The deposits show low Ag contents, which is consistent with mesothermal Au. Hollinger and McIntyre deposits have similar trace element abundances with higher Ag, Pb, Bi, Sb, and Pd and generally low Cu; however, Cu concentrations in McIntyre are higher than in Hollinger. In contrast, Aunor shows comparatively low Ag, Bi, Sb, Pb, and Pd and higher Au/Ag consistent with higher hydrothermal fluid temperatures. Gold grain signatures reflect the chemical characteristics of the host rock superimposed on a chemical signature inherited from the mineralizing fluid. The association of Pb–Bi–Cu bearing phases such as galena and chalcopyrite with gold apparently enriched in these elements supports precipitation from hydrothermal fluids carrying the elements. Unravelling the petrogenesis and stratigraphy of Archean mafic lava flows is essential to our comprehension of the early geodynamic evolution and economic potential of greenstone belts. This study focuses on one of the oldest and thickest sequences of lava flows observed in the Neoarchean Abitibi Subprovince (greenstone belt), that is, the Obatogamau Formation. The undated formation extends for more than 100 km in an E–W direction and consists mostly of aphyric and feldspar megacryst-bearing basaltic-andesite lava flows. These lava flows are tholeiitic, mostly Fe-rich, and have nearly homogeneous chemistry. Petrogenetic modelling carried out using MELTS software points to limited magmatic differentiation as most samples of mafic lava flows did not reach Fe-Ti-oxide saturation. Zircon U-Pb dating establishes a crystallization age of 2726.2 ± 1.6 Ma for a felsic unit located at an intermediate stratigraphic position in the sequence of lava flows. Constraints from stratigraphically overlying volcanic units suggest that the Obatogamau Formation was likely emplaced rapidly, possibly within a few million years and as a consequence of frequent replenishment of shallow magma accumulations. High eruption rates are consistent with short episodes of volcanic quiescence deduced from field observations, indicating non-optimal conditions for volcanogenic massive sulfide systems. The pressure and temperature of peak metamorphism deduced from amphibole chemistry, however, points to favorable conditions for the release of metamorphic fluids. The study area may thus be prospective for orogenic gold mineralization, provided that fluids had access to a source of gold and that structural conduits allowed for the channeling of hydrothermal fluids. This paper focusses on obtaining a better understanding of the subsurface geology of the Chibougamau area, in the northeast of the Abitibi greenstone belt (Superior craton), using geophysical data collected along a 128 km long traverse with a rough southwest–northeast orientation. We have constructed two-dimensional (2D) models of the study area that are consistent with newly collected gravity data and high-resolution magnetic data sets. The initial models were constrained at depth by an interpretation of a new seismic section and at surface by the bedrock geology and known geometry of lithological units. The attributes of the model were constrained using petrophysical measurements so that the final model is compatible with all available geological and geophysical data. The potential-field data modelling resolved the geometry of plutons and magnetic bodies that are transparent on seismic sections. The new model is consistent with the known structural geology, such as open folding, and provides an improvement in estimating the size, shape, and depth of the Barlow and Chibougamau plutons. The Chibougamau pluton is known to be associated with Cu–Au magmatic-hydrothermal mineralisation and, as the volume and geometry of intrusive bodies is paramount to the exploration of such mineralisation, the modelling presented here provides a scientific foundation to exploration models focused on such mineralisation. The Flin Flon – Athapapuskow Lake area, situated in the Flin Flon Greenstone Belt, Manitoba, consists of ocean-floor and island-arc assemblages, deformed and metamorphosed during the Trans-Hudson Orogeny (∼1.86–1.69 Ga). A new map of metamorphic mineral assemblages and isograds has been compiled that reveals a largely coherent regional metamorphic sequence increasing in metamorphic grade from prehnite–pumpellyite to amphibolite facies. Regional metamorphism postdates most of the deformation within the area, with the exception of the reactivation of major block-bounding faults. The regional prograde sequence has been subdivided into 10 metamorphic zones, separated by 9 isograds, that describe the transition from prehnite–pumpellyite to greenschist to amphibolite facies. The formation of contact metamorphic aureoles, pre-dating regional metamorphism, record conditions up to amphibolite facies. Equilibrium phase diagrams for the island-arc (low-Mg) and ocean-floor (high-Mg) assemblages were calculated and allow for the evaluation of the modelling techniques and determination of pressure–temperature conditions. Discrepancies between the modelling predictions and natural observations occur due to (1) limitations in the thermodynamic models for some of the complex minerals (e.g., amphibole); and (2) metastable persistence of some minerals to higher grade due to sluggish reaction kinetics. Notwithstanding these discrepancies, the modelling suggests that metamorphosed mafic rocks in the Flin Flon – Athapapuskow Lake area reached about 430–480 °C and 3.0–4.5 kbar. Peak metamorphic conditions within contact aureoles that preceded regional metamorphism did not exceed 500 °C (at a pressure between 2.7 and 4.4 kbar). The metamorphic field gradient records a transition from 250–300 °C/1.5–2.3 kbar to 430–480 °C/3–4.5 kbar (100–150 °C/kbar), defining a geothermal gradient of approximately 25–31 °C/km. The Piché Structural Complex (PSC) extends over 150 km within the Cadillac – Larder Lake Fault Zone (CLLFZ), a gold-endowed, east-trending, and high-strain corridor located along the southern edge of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince. The PSC consists of discontinuous units of volcanic rocks (<1 km thick) that host multiple gold deposits. It is spatially associated with molasse-type Timiskaming sedimentary basins. This study describes and interprets the origin of structures and lithologies within the poorly understood PSC to unravel the tectonic evolution of the CLLFZ. Field mapping, chemical analyses, as well as interpretations of cross-sections from drill-hole data, were used to interpret the geometry and structure of the PSC. The PSC is subdivided into six homogeneous fault-bounded segments or slivers. These slivers consist mostly of ultramafic to intermediate volcanic rocks and include some felsic volcanic flows and intrusions. Volcanic facies, chemical compositions, and isotopic ages confirm that these slivers are derived from the early volcanic units of the southern Abitibi greenstone belt, which are located north of the CLLFZ. Cross-cutting relationships between volcanic rocks of the PSC and the Timiskaming-aged intrusions suggest that the slivers were inserted into the CLLFZ during the early stages of the accretion-related deformation (<2686 Ma) and prior to Timiskaming sedimentation and ductile deformation (>2676 Ma). The abundant ultramafic rocks located within the CLLFZ may have focused strain, thereby facilitating the nucleation of the fault as well as the displacements along this crustal-scale structure. Lamprophyres are minor intrusions with atypical sources and crystallisation sequences. Among lamprophyres, the calc-alkaline (CAL) type on which this study focuses has the least distinctive chemistry and petrology. CAL correspond to small-volume mafic intrusions characterised by the early fractionation of amphibole and (or) biotite. In the Archean Superior Province (Canada), CAL are temporally and spatially related to several gold deposits and may thus be relevant to mineral exploration. This study focuses on several altered and metamorphosed intrusions of the Abitibi and La Grande subprovinces, which were designated lamprophyres based on field observations. Several criteria established from thin sections, whole-rock chemical analyses, and SEM data are applied to the studied rocks to distinguish CAL from other types of magma. As a result, only one of the studied dykes has the morphology, chemistry, and petrology typical of CAL, while the other intrusions are either too altered to be classified or may correspond to metamorphosed and metasomatized gabbro and diorite. This study shows that thin sections and whole-rock chemical analyses are not always sufficient to unequivocally classify an altered and metamorphosed intrusion as a CAL. Also, intrusions as challenging to recognise as CAL should not be used by exploration geologists to prospect for orogenic gold deposits. Much remains to be done to document the distribution and volume represented by lamprophyres in Archean greenstone belts and to confirm their spatial dependence with gold deposits. The Archean Côté Gold Au(-Cu) deposit is the first large gold deposit discovered in the Swayze greenstone belt of the Abitibi Subprovince. The deposit is a low-grade, large-tonnage type with a combined indicated and inferred resource of 8.65 M oz Au (245.2 t Au). The deposit is hosted by the Chester intrusive complex (CIC), a multiphase, subvolcanic intrusion composed of low-Al tonalite, diorite, and quartz diorite, plus magmatic and hydrothermal breccia bodies. The age of the tonalite and dioritic phases is constrained at 2741-2739 ± 1 Ma using high-precision isotope dilution - thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) U-Pb zircon geochronology. Although these phases are co-temporal and co-spatial, they appear to be petrogenetically unrelated. The CIC was emplaced into mafic metavolcanic rocks of the Arbutus Formation whose geochemistry reflects a back-arc environment. The tonalite of the CIC is coeval and co-genetic with the felsic to intermediate metavolcanic rocks of the Yeo Formation. Emplacement of the CIC into a shallow crustal level is inferred based on the incorporation of screens and inclusions of the Yeo Formation and is supported by the presence of textures in tonalite and dioritic rocks (e.g., granophyres, miarolitic cavities, and pegmatites), as well as Al-in-hornblende geobarometry results of ≤1.3 ± 0.6 kbars (1 kbar = 100 MPa). The CIC is petrologically similar to other subvolcanic, low-Al tonalite-trondhjemite-diorite intrusions that underlie volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS)-type deposits and which themselves may contain syn-intrusion mineralization. The Mesoarchean Târtoq greenstone belt, southern West Greenland, consists of tectonically imbricated slices of metamorphosed basalt, gabbro, peridotite, and sedimentary rocks and is intruded by felsic rocks (now mylonites) with well-preserved duplex structures, representing a relict accretionary prism. The Târtoq greenstone belt is a remnant of a supra-subduction zone ophiolite that originated as back-arc basin oceanic crust. Following the initiation of intra-oceanic subduction, the back-arc oceanic crust accreted to the overriding plate, forming an accretionary prism. The felsic mylonites are compositionally akin to Archean tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite suites. Field observations, along with geochemical and zircon U-Pb age data, indicate that the protoliths of the felsic mylonites were derived from partial melting of back-arc basalts in the accretionary prism and emplaced along thrust faults between 3012 ± 4 and 2993 ± 6 Ma. It is proposed that the partial melting of the basalts likely occurred in response to ridge subduction. The Upper Cretaceous turbiditic greywackes of the Chugach - Prince William accretionary complex in southern Alaska are intruded by Paleogene felsic dykes. These felsic dykes appear to have been derived from partial melting of subducted and (or) accreted oceanic crust during slab window magmatism. Archean granitoid-greenstone terrains share many geological characteristics of Phanerozoic subduction-accretion complexes such as the Alaskan and Altaid subduction-accretion complexes, consistent with the operation of uniformitarian geological processes in the Archean. The Archean Earth might have been dominated by numerous smaller plates and greater ridge length than today that would have resulted in more frequent ridge-accretionary prism interactions and larger volumes of tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite generation in subduction-accretion complexes. Subvertically- to vertically-dipping Archean strata provide an excellent opportunity to study synvolcanic structures and internal organization of subaqueous volcanic complexes. The Abitibi greenstone belt in Quebec, Canada, hosts a number of these volcanic complexes and specifically the unique Blake River Megacaldera Complex. The Blake River Megacaldera Complex is composed of ( i) an initial shield phase known as the Misema Caldera and ( ii) two graben-type calderas known as the New Senator and Noranda calderas. The southern portion of the New Senator Caldera, the focus of this study, is of particular interest as the structure hosts the 54 Mt Horne Au-rich volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit. Detailed facies mapping, coupled with geochemical and geochronological analysis at multiple outcrop localities throughout the city of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, show that the stratigraphy of the New Senator Caldera is dominated by subaqueous effusive mafic volcanic facies with local felsic effusive and intrusive deposits. With the incorporation of structural data, we have used synvolcanic faults and dyke complexes to divide these facies into specific blocks within this region, here renamed the Rouyn-Pelletier sector. This study focuses on the facies and characteristics of the Pelletier, Senator, and Glenwood blocks and identifies the Évain, Stadacona, and Chadbourne blocks. Geochronological analysis reveals that facies of the Glenwood Block are approximately the same age as those of the felsic flows of the previously identified Horne Block. Together, all extrusive and intrusive volcanic facies from the Stadacona unit north to the Horne Creek fault compose a large caldera complex known as the Rouyn-Pelletier Caldera Complex. The Oaks Belt (OB) is a Neoarchean volcanic complex located in northwestern Minnesota, USA. It is part of the Wabigoon granite-greenstone terrane that hosts the world-class Rainy River gold deposit in nearby Ontario, Canada. Rocks in the OB form a north-dipping homocline in the fault-bounded pressure shadow of a sigma-shaped volcano-plutonic wedge that spans east-west for 220 km across the Minnesota, USA - Ontario, Canada border. Exploration drilling in the area delineated pyrrhotite-pyrite massive sulfide deposits, iron formation, chert, and semi-massive sphalerite mineralized zones. High-resolution aeromagnetic data indicate a large (∼60 km2) composite subvolcanic intrusion underlies these iron-rich strata in the OB. The position of this inferred intrusion elucidates the low base metal content of known massive sulfide deposits, as they were too far away (6-10 km) from a heat source to have been favorable sites for base metal deposition. The relative abundance of Au and Zn in the OB, alongside correlation coefficients between metals in massive sulfide deposits, iron formation, and chert, indicates the rocks were affected by a low-temperature hydrothermal system under relatively shallow water conditions (<1000 m). Negative correlation between Na2O and CaO in basalt, and their mutual moderate positive correlation with immobile corundum (Al2O3), implies alteration in the upper part of the volcanic pile did not result in substantial element mobility in most samples. Geochemical data from mafic and felsic volcanic rocks plot mainly in the calc-alkaline field. Thus, the OB is most prospective for hosting Au-rich VMS deposits and future exploration should focus on paleo-thermal corridors and favorable stratigraphic horizons near the newly inferred composite subvolcanic intrusion. The geological history and evolution of the Dharwar craton from ca. 3.5-2.5 Ga is reviewed and briefly compared with a second craton, Kaapvaal, to allow some speculation on the nature of global tectonic regimes in this period. The Dharwar craton is divided into western (WDC) and eastern (EDC) parts (separated possibly by the Closepet Granite Batholith), based on lithological differences and inferred metamorphic and magmatic genetic events. A tentative evolution of the WDC encompasses an early, ca. 3.5 Ga protocrust possibly forming the basement to the ca. 3.35-3.2 Ga Sargur Group greenstone belts. The latter are interpreted as having formed through accretion of plume-related ocean plateaux. The approximately coeval Peninsular Gneiss Complex (PGC) was possibly sourced from beneath plateau remnants, and resulted in high-grade metamorphism of Sargur Group belts at ca. 3.13-2.96 Ga. At about 2.9-2.6 Ga, the Dharwar Supergroup formed, comprising lower Bababudan (largely braided fluvial and subaerial volcanic deposits) and upper Chitradurga (marine mixed clastic and chemical sedimentary rocks and subaqueous volcanics) groups. This supergroup is preserved in younger greenstone belts with two distinct magmatic events, at 2.7-2.6 and 2.58-2.54 Ga, the latter approximately coincident with ca. 2.6-2.5 Ga granitic magmatism which essentially completed cratonization in the WDC. The EDC comprises 2.7-2.55 Ga tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) gneisses and migmatites, approximately coeval greenstone belts (dominated by volcanic lithologies), with minor inferred remnants of ca. 3.38-3.0 Ga crust, and voluminous 2.56-2.5 Ga granitoid intrusions (including the Closepet Batholith). An east-to-west accretion of EDC island arcs (or of an assembled arc - granitic terrane) onto the WDC is debated, with a postulate that the Closepet Granite accreted earlier onto the WDC as part of a 'central Dharwar' terrane. A final voluminous granitic cratonization event is envisaged to have affected the entire, assembled Dharwar craton at ca. 2.5 Ga. When Dharwar evolution is compared with that of Kaapvaal, while possibly global magmatic events and freeboard-eustatic changes at ca. 2.7-2.5 Ga may be identified on both, the much earlier cratonization (by ca. 3.1 Ga) of Kaapvaal contrasts strongly with the ca. 2.5 Ga stabilization of Dharwar. From comparing only two cratons, it appears that genetic and chronologic relationships between mantle thermal and plate tectonic processes were complex on the Archaean Earth. The sizes of the Kaapvaal and Dharwar cratons might have been too limited yet to support effective thermal blanketing and thus accommodate Wilson Cycle onset. Geological investigation of the rocks in the Elu Link has provided new information on the geodynamic origin of the Neoarchean (ca. 2716-2663 Ma) Hope Bay and Elu granite-greenstone belts. Stratigraphic and geochemical features of these rocks and those of the nearby Flake Lake area in the Hope Bay belt suggest that the two greenstone belts are contiguous, having similar mafic-dominated bimodal rocks comprising abundant basalts to andesites and less common dacites and rhyolites hosting gabbroic and trondhjemite-tonalite-granodiorite (TTG) intrusions. The corresponding parental magmas, whose evolution likely occurred via fractional crystallization and juvenile crustal contamination, formed from both deep and shallow mantle sources. The basalts, andesites, gabbros, and felsic volcanic rocks are variably tholeiitic to calc-alkaline. Chondrite- and primitive mantle-normalized profiles demonstrate (1) flat to slightly fractionated heavy rare-earth element (HREE) patterns with a weak negative Eu anomaly and (2) light rare-earth element (LREE) enriched and strongly fractionated HREE patterns with variable negative to positive Eu anomalies. In contrast, TTG rocks are calc-alkaline, with strong LREE enrichment, HREE depletion, and variable positive Eu anomalies. Altogether, the rocks exhibit Nb and Ti troughs, and variable Nb/Ta, La/Ta, and Zr/Hf ratios indicative of crustal contamination. Chalcophile elements and related ore deposits in the area are inferred to be formed from hydrothermal fluids mobilized during emplacement and after crystallization of their host rocks. An extensional, high-heat-flow back-arc tectonic environment is proposed to explain the stratigraphic and geochemical characteristics and the presence of large gold resources in these greenstone belts. Metamorphosed mafic rocks from west-central Vermont crop out in tectonic slices of the Stowe Formation within the Rowe-Hawley Belt of New England. The rocks include greenstone and amphibolite, which are interpreted to have been basaltic flows and gabbroic intrusions, respectively. Even though the rocks have been metamorphosed to greenschist or amphibolite facies, their igneous origins can be deciphered through careful use of geochemistry. Three geochemical types have been identified. Type 1 and 2 samples have geochemical characteristics similar to those found in mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), except that they have slightly elevated light rare-earth element (LREE) concentrations and are higher in Nb/Y ratios. Their Nb/Y ratios are similar to basalts found in Iceland and parts of the Afar region of the East African Rift. Types 1 and 2 are similar to metabasalts of the Caldwell and Maquereau formations in southern Quebec. The less-common type 3 samples have highly enriched LREE and are high in Nb/Y and Zr/Y ratios, similar to some alkali basalts from Afar and Iceland. Detailed analysis of the geochemistry suggests that greenstones and amphibolite from the Stowe Formation formed as basaltic eruptions during very late stages in rifting of the Rodinian continent that eventually led to formation of the Iapetus Ocean. Late Neoarchean volcanic belts in the southern Slave Province include (1) in the east, the Cameron River – Beaulieu River belts, which are characterized by stratigraphically thin, flow-rich, classic calc-alkaline, arc-type sequences with accompanying syngenetic volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits; and (2) in the west, the Yellowknife belt, which is characterized by stratigraphically thick, structurally complex, pyroclastic-rich, adakitic, back-arc basin-type sequences, with accompanying epigenetic lode-gold deposits. The volcanic belt association bears persuasive chemical evidence of subduction-initiated magma generation. However, the greenstone belts, together with coeval matching patterned belts in Superior Province of the southern Canadian Shield, bear equally persuasive evidence of prevailing autochthonous–parautochthonous relations with respect to component stratigraphic parts and to older gneissic basement. The eastern and western volcanic belts in question are petrogenetically ascribed to a "westerly inclined" (present geography) subduction zone(s) that produced shallower (east) to deeper (west), slab-initiated, mantle wedge-generated, parent magmas. This early stage microplate tectonic process involved modest mantle subduction depths, small tectonic plates, and small sialic cratons. In the larger context of Earth's progressively cooling, hence subduction-deepening mantle, this late Neoarchean greenstone belt development (2.73–2.66 Ga) merged with the massive end-Archean tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite–granite (TTGG) "bloom" (2.65–2.55 Ga), resulting in greatly enhanced craton stability. Successive subduction-deepening, plate-craton-enlarging stages, with appropriate metallotectonic response across succeeding Proterozoic time and beyond, led to modern-mode plate tectonics. The Selbaie Cu–Zn deposit is located in the northeastern portion of the northern Archean Abitibi volcanic belt. It is one of the most important base metal deposits in Canada. It includes stratiform pyrite levels in the volcanites and shallow-water sediments, stockworks in a rhyodacitic breccia, and a copper-rich vein, in a caldera context. The study of the regional alteration distribution is based on a database of more than 2300 chemical sample analyses using the NORMAT normative mineral alteration index. This method allows independent analysis of the numerous lithologic variations in the Selbaie district. Five facies are distinguished in a vast sodium-depleted zone, from the core to the periphery of the hydrothermal system: chlorite–pyrophyllite in the mineralized zones, chlorite–sericite, sericite, sericite–orthoclase and orthoclase at the periphery. The carbonates also show zoning, with ankerite–dolomite at the periphery and siderite–magnesite at the core. With NORMAT, it is possible to highlight overprinted alterations. The zoning observed at Selbaie corresponds to the overprinting of a system showing sulphide ore and acid-type epithermal deposit characteristics, with abundant pyrophyllite, very likely related to a deeper porphyritic system [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent advances in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and analysis can be used in conjunction with traditional geoscience data sets to determine effective predictors for gold mineralization, from which mineral prospectivity maps can be generated that highlight potential exploration targets on a regional scale. In this paper, key components of the Archean lode gold deposit model for the Red Lake belt are selected and modeled using weights of evidence (WofE) analysis and logistic regression, leading to the creation of gold prospectivity maps. The best predictors for past and present gold producers in the Red Lake camp, according to WofE analysis include (1) elevated trace elements, Au, As, and Sb; (2) a number of alteration indices calculated from oxide geochemical data; (3) alteration characterized by pervasive and vein-style ferroan carbonate and elevated Au, As, Sb, and S anomalies; (4) proximity to the Mackenzie Island stock and diorite phases of the Dome stock; and, (5) tholeiitic basaltic flows and associated gabbroic rocks of the Balmer assemblage. Gold prospectivity maps produced by logistic regression using binary evidence maps highlight anomalous localities within known and highly prospective areas in the district (Madsen – Red Lake corridor, Balmertown – Cochenour – East Bay). Seismic reflection line 2B was shot across the Archean Red Lake greenstone belt and Sydney Lake fault zone that marks the northern boundary of the English River metasedimentary belt, as part of the Western Superior Lithoprobe transect. Three-dimensional tomographic inversion of first arrival traveltimes recorded in this survey delineate the subsurface to depths as great as 1.5 km around this crooked two-dimensional seismic line. Within the Red Lake greenstone belt, P-wave velocities of 6.2–7.0 km s–1 occur at 500 m depth in the Mesoarchean Balmer assemblage, clearly distinguishable from the lower velocities of 5.1–6.1 km s–1 of the Neoarchean Confederation assemblage. Although the overall range of velocities in the metasedimentary rocks of the English River subprovince is similar to that found in the Confederation assemblage, lower velocities of 5.1–5.4 km s–1 are found in the upper 300 m of the metasedimentary rocks. In particular, two 2–3 km wide, east-northeast-striking zones of low velocity are associated with the Sydney Lake fault zone and the Pakwash Lake fault zone. Correlation of the velocities with the coincident reflection section suggests that these two faults delineate a fault-bounded block in the hanging wall of a more northerly fault zone that crops out within the Uchi subprovince. Anomalous regions of low velocity, which occur at the boundary between the Confederation and Balmer assemblages, and within the Balmer assemblage, may also be related to shear zones that have minimal near-surface expression, felsic lithologies, or hydrothermal alteration of the basalts. New field work, U–Pb ages, geochemical data, and Sm–Nd isotopic analyses have established the timing and determined the nature of volcanism, deformation, and tectonic assembly of the Pickle Lake greenstone belt in the Uchi subprovince of the western Superior Province of the Canadian Shield. The >2860 Ma Pickle Crow assemblage has been redefined to include the former Northern Pickle assemblage on the basis of stratigraphic continuity and similar volcanic geochemistry between the two units across a previously inferred fault contact. The Pickle Crow assemblage consists of tholeiitic basalt with thin, but laterally extensive, oxide-facies iron formation overlain by alkalic basalts and minor calc-alkaline andesites to dacites with primitive Nd isotopic compositions (εNd2.89 Ga = +2.1 to +2.4) suggestive of deposition in a sediment-starved oceanic basin. The ~2 km thick ~2836 Ma Kaminiskag assemblage (former Woman assemblage) consists of tholeiitic basalt interbedded with intermediate and rare felsic pyroclastic flows with primitive Nd isotopic compositions (εNd2.836 Ga = +2.4). Two samples of intermediate volcanic rocks interbedded with southeast-younging pillowed basalt, previously inferred to be part of the Pickle Crow assemblage, yielded U–Pb zircon ages of 2744 Ma and 2729 ± 3 Ma. These rocks are thus part of the younger Confederation assemblage, which consists of intercalated basalt and dacite (εNd2.74 Ga = +0.1 to +0.8) exhibiting diverse compositions probably reflecting eruption in a continental margin arc to back-arc setting. The contact between the Confederation and Kaminiskag assemblages is assumed to be a fault. The greenstone belt is intruded by late syn- to posttectonic plutons including the composite quartz dioritic to gabbroic July Falls stock with a new U–Pb zircon age of 2749 Ma, and the ~2741 to 2740 Ma trondhjemitic to granodioritic Ochig Lake pluton and Pickle Lake stock, as well as the ~2697 to 2716 Ma Hooker–Burkoski stock. The earliest recognized deformation (D1) is recorded by a local bedding-parallel foliation in the Pickle Crow assemblage. This foliation is truncated by the ~2735 Ma Albany quartz–feldspar porphyry dyke and is not recognized in the volcanic rocks of the Confederation assemblage. The early deformation event is attributed to overturning of the Pickle Crow assemblage prior to deposition of the ~2744 to 2729 Ma Confederation assemblage. Subsequent deformation and development of a regionally penetrative planar fabric (S2) postdates ~2729 Ma volcanism, pre-dates the intrusion of the ca. <2716 Ma Hooker–Burkoski stock and is host to gold mineralization. In western Superior province, the North Caribou terrane (NCT) constitutes a Mesoarchean proto-continent heavily overprinted by Neoarchean magmatism and deformation resulting from the western Superior Province accretion. Locally, along the southern margin of the NCT, Mesoarchean (~3.0 Ga) rift sequences are preserved. These sequences are of key importance to our understanding of the early tectonic evolution of continental crust. The Wallace Lake greenstone belt is located at the southern margin of the NCT and includes the Wallace Lake assemblage, the Big Island assemblage, the Siderock Lake assemblage, and the French Man Bay assemblage. The Wallace Lake assemblage exposes one of the best-preserved Mesoarchean rift sequences along the southern margin of the NCT. The volcano-sedimentary assemblage (3.0–2.92 Ga) exposes arkoses derived from the uplift of a tonalite basement in a subaqueous environment, capped by carbonate and iron formation. Mafic to ultramafic volcanic rocks exhibiting crustal contamination and derived from plume magmatism cap this rift sequence. The Wallace Lake assemblage exhibits D1 Mesoarchean deformation. The Big Island assemblage comprises mafic volcanic rocks of oceanic affinity that were docked to the Wallace Lake assemblage along northwest-trending D2 shear zones. The timing of volcanism and docking of the Big Island assemblage remain uncertain. The Siderock Lake and French Man Bay assemblages were deposited in strike-slip basins related to D3 and D4 stages of movement of the transcurrent Wanipigow fault (<2.709 Ga). Regionally, the Wallace Lake assemblage correlates with the Lewis–Story Rift assemblage observed in Lake Winnipeg, whereas the Big Island assemblage appears to correlate with the Black Island assemblage observed in the Lake Winnipeg area. Thus, the North Caribou terrane appears to preserve vestiges of a Mesoarchean rifted succession together with overlying Neoarchean allochthonous, juvenile, volcanic successions over a considerable distance along its present-day southern margin. A combined U–Pb and field mapping study of the Island Lake greenstone belt has led to the recognition of three distinct supracrustal assemblages. These assemblages record magmatic episodes at 2897, 2852, and 2744 Ma. Voluminous plutonic rocks within the belt range in age from 2894 to 2730 Ma, with a concentration at 2744 Ma. U–Pb data also show that a regional fault that transects the belt, the Savage Island shear zone, is not a terrane-bounding structure. The youngest sedimentary group in the belt, the Island Lake Group, has an unconformable relationship with older plutons. Sedimentation in this group is bracketed between 2712 and 2699 Ma. This group, and others similar to it in the northwestern Superior Province, is akin to Timiskaming-type sedimentary groups found throughout the Superior Province and in other Archean cratons. These data confirm that this belt experienced a complex geological history that spanned at least 200 million years, which is typical of greenstone belts in this area. Age correlations between the Island Lake belt and other belts in the northwest Superior Province suggest the existence of a volcanic "megasequence". This evidence, in combination with Nd isotopic data, indicates that the Oxford–Stull domain, and the Munro Lake, Island Lake, and North Caribou terranes may have been part of a much larger reworked Mesoarchean crustal block, the North Caribou superterrane. It appears that the Superior Province was assembled by accretion of such large independent crustal blocks, whose individual histories involved extended periods of autochthonous development. The North Caribou terrane of the western Superior Province attained continental thickness (~35 km) by 2997 Ma. It records a subsequent 300 million years history of continental fragmentation, arc magmatism, and terrane accretion. At Lake Winnipeg the ~2978 Ma Lewis–Storey quartzite–komatiite–iron formation assemblage marks Mesoarchean breakup. Unlike the relatively continuous 2980–2735 Ma stratigraphic record of the Red Lake and Birch–Uchi greenstone belts to the east, little of this interval is recorded at Lake Winnipeg. Rather, two belts of younger, juvenile rocks are tectonically juxtaposed: the Black Island assemblage of isotopically depleted, 2723 Ma basalt, and calc-alkaline andesite; and Rice Lake greenstone belt of basalt, calc-alkaline andesite, and dacite (2731–2729 Ma). Collectively these terranes represent a short-lived island-arc–back-arc system that docked with the southwestern North Caribou margin along a northwest-trending, dextral, transpressive, D1 suture. This zone is marked by the highly deformed coarse clastic Guano Island sequence (<2728 Ma) that contains detritus of North Caribou affinity and is interpreted as a strike-slip basin deposit. Younger clastic sequences, including the Hole River (<2708 Ma), San Antonio (<2705 Ma), and English River (<2704 Ma) assemblages, occur in east–west belts that may have been deposited during the terminal collision (D2, D3) between the North Caribou terrane and continental crust of the Winnipeg River terrane to the south. Several terrane docking events within a framework of north-dipping subduction and continental arc magmatism appear necessary to explain structural and stratigraphic relationships in the 2735–2700 Ma interval. Western Superior Lithoprobe seismic-reflection line 1 exhibits a broad region of northward-dipping reflectors in the Uchi subprovince, which gives way to southward-dipping reflectors farther north in the Berens River sub province. Mafic metavolcanic rocks across the region of northward-dipping reflectors exhibit a decline in metamorphic pressure, from pressures of 6 kbar (1 kbar = 100 MPa) in the south to only 2 kbar 80 km to the north. This indicates that the southern edge of the Uchi subprovince has undergone significantly more unroofing than regions farther north. The differential unroofing is not consistent with a doubly vergent thrusting origin for the northward- and southward-dipping reflector pattern. It could result from a crustal-scale synform, of which the region of northward-dipping reflectors would make up the southern limb. Metamorphic pressures from samples off the seismic line, however, provide only limited support for a regional synform, and suggest that much of the pressure variation may result from deformation associated with motion on late faults that are widespread in the western Superior Province. These faults occur in a WNW-striking set with dextral offsets and an ENE-striking set with sinistral offsets. They could result from north–south compression and east–west extension, provided the faults have rotated towards the east–west direction during deformation. Regional tilting and (or) jostling of crustal blocks is attributed to deformation associated with the fault rotation. Motion on the faults and the associated deformation of intervening fault blocks may be important contributors to the present crustal architecture of the western Superior Province, including the surface distribution and form of the greenstone belts. Evidence for both vertical and horizontal movement is well preserved in the Cross Lake greenstone belt in the northwestern Superior Province. The vertical movement components are concentrated in high-strain zones along pluton–greenstone contacts and are characterized by pluton-side-up or greenstone-side-down movement, and the geometry, kinematics, and strain distribution are consistent with a vertical tectonic model involving diapirism and sagduction. The horizontal components are concentrated in major east-southeast-trending dextral high-strain zones and in subordinate northeast-trending sinistral, antithetic high-strain zones and can be readily explained by a horizontal tectonic model involving dextral transpression. Results of a detailed structural analysis indicate that the vertical and horizontal tectonism were more or less synchronous, and there was a transition from dominantly vertical tectonism at the early stages to dominantly horizontal tectonism at the late stages. The Cross Lake Group, consisting of Timiskaming-type sedimentary rocks, was deposited in a synclinal keel between granitoid domes associated with vertical tectonism. It is suggested that synchronous vertical and horizontal tectonism was a common process in the Neoarchean and might represent a transition from dominant vertical tectonism in the Mesoarchean (and Paleoarchean?) to dominant horizontal tectonism in the Proterozoic and Phanerozoic. The western Superior Province sustained rapid crustal growth in the interval 2.72–2.68 Ga through amalgamation of microcontinental crustal blocks and juvenile oceanic terranes. Recent field, isotopic, and geophysical surveys provide insight on the nature, timing, and scale of this accretionary growth. However, few places offer the rich tectono-stratigraphic and structural detail with which to establish accretion of oceanic and continental blocks as does the Savant–Sturgeon area. Here, 3.4–2.8 Ga continental crust of the Winnipeg River terrane is juxtaposed with 2.775–2.718 Ga juvenile oceanic rocks of the western Wabigoon terrane across a 2.85–2.75 Ga, southwest-facing, continental margin sequence. The continental margin was reactivated at ~2.715 Ga with the establishment of an arc, recorded by 2.715–2.70 Ga tonalite and associated intermediate volcanic rocks. This magmatic activity is interpreted to reflect north- and east-dipping subduction that led to consumption of a small tract of oceanic crust between the Winnipeg River and western Wabigoon terranes, ultimately leading to their amalgamation after 2.703 Ga. The telescoped fore arc also includes continental-derived turbiditic wacke, siltstone, and iron formation (Warclub assemblage) that are in tectonic contact with diverse oceanic rocks of the western Wabigoon terrane. Collision is bracketed between 2.703 Ga (the maximum age of marine fore arc deposits) and ~2.696 Ga (the minimum age of a late-tectonic pluton). Effects include thrust stacking and the development of shallow-plunging folds and bedding-parallel fabrics (D1), overprinted by steeply plunging inclined folds, steep foliations, and shear zones (D2). The Grenville Province and other parts of the Canadian Shield contain major (>100 km long) high-strain zones, also called shear belts or ductile shear zones, that are hosted by heterogeneously deformed gneisses and schists. In well-exposed segments of three nontabular zones whose dip angle is known locally, at the erosion level and (or) in the shallow subsurface, we investigate the tangential shear strain (better called the tangential unit shear or TUS) without assuming that mineral-shape lineations, common varieties of stretching lineations, are effectively parallel to the local TUS direction. Employing a graphic technique that copes with the geometric conditions of general triaxial strain, we approximate the actual direction and find the sense of local TUS in parts of (i) the Parry Sound shear zone, Grenville Province; (ii) the South Range shear zone, Southern Province; and (iii) the Uchi – English River subprovince boundary zone, Superior Province. Information thus obtained for individual high-strain zones in Ontario confirms the validity of published hypotheses: (i) 1020–970 Ma, normal-sense distributed shearing in the Grenvillian thrust stack; (ii) northwest- directed thrusting of Huronian rocks over Archean basement; and (iii) north-directed thrusting of English River metasediments and associated migmatites onto the Uchi granite–greenstone terrain, under peak metamorphic conditions. A complex history of volcano-sedimentary deposition, polyphase strain, multiple intrusive events, and various stages of porphyroblastesis is indicated for the Hemlo gold deposit area within the Hemlo greenstone belt. Structural elements can be assigned to at least six stages of development (D[sub1]-D[sub6]). D[sub1] generated small-scale folds and low-angle faults (thrusts?) with no planar fabric, except within strain aureoles around the earliest intrusions. D[sub2] was a progressive event resulting from northeast-directed compression, which generated regional, predominantly S-shaped folds (early D[sub2]); penetrative planar and linear fabrics, overturned stratigraphy, and formation of an inflection in the strike of the greenstone belt (mid-D[sub2]); and development of high-strain zones with dominant sinistral and local dextral shear sense (late D[sub2]). [sub3] was a distinctly separate progressive event resulting from northwest-directed transpression, which generated variably penetrative east- to northeast-striking foliation (S[sub3]), ductile dextral shear fabrics, and small-scale Z-shaped folds (early D[sub3]), followed by brittle ductile to brittle development of cataclasite and pseudotachylite in layer-parallel zones (late D[sub3]). D[sub4] resulted in contractional kinks and brittle fractures, locally in conjugate sets. D[sub5] and D[sub6] are represented by brittle to brittle ductile faults, which overprint Paleoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic dikes, respectively. Four granitoid magmatic events span the interval 2720-2677 Ma, with emplacement mainly during D[sub2], between ca. 2690 and ca. 2684 Ma. A protracted period of regional medium-grade metamorphism likely spanned the D[sub2]-D[sub3] stages. Numerous small remnants of Archean greenstone belts in the Northern Superior Province (ca. 2875-2710 Ma) have chemical characteristics similar to those of the larger greenstone belts of the Southern Superior Province, and preserve direct evidence of crustal conditions prior to the major volcanic events of the late Archean (Wawa-Abitibi subprovinces; ca. 2760 2700 Ma). Three of the best preserved belts are engulfed in tonalite intrusions of the Faribault-Thury Complex (FTC) and exhibit common chemical characteristics, which may imply a similar origin. The dominant tholeiitic basalts typically have MgO contents > 7 wt.%, TiO[sub2] < 1 wt.% and nearly flat rare-earth element (REE) patterns (La/Sm[subn] = 0.77-1.22; Gd/Yb[subn] = 0.86-1.20). Associated komatiites have flat to depleted REE patterns (La/Sm[subn] = 0.45-0.95), high Al[sub2]O[sub3]TiO[sub2] (>15), low CaO/Al[sub2]O[sub3] (<1.2), and chondritic Gd/Yb ratios similar to 2.7 Ga Al-undepleted komatiites. The trace-element ratios of komatiitic rocks are indistinguishable from those of the associated tholeiites, suggesting either a derivation from similar mantle sources or a comagmatic relationship (Nb/Th[subpm] = 0.8 1.1; La/Ce[subpm] = 0.9 1.3; Nb/Ce = 0.7 0.9; Y/Ho[subpm] -1; and Th/La[subpm] = 0.7-1.1). Numerical modelling of trace and major elements during low-pressure crystal fractionation reproduces the spectrum of both inferred liquid and cumulate compositions and is consistent with a comagmatic origin between the komatiites and tholeiites. The relatively low Nb/Th ratios of these mid-Archean volcanic rocks relative to both modern day basalts and late Archean basalts may indicate that they were derived from a mantle source that had not lost its crustal components, nor seen significant recycled oceanic... The ~2.65 Ga old Shamvaian Group sedimentary rocks occur as a folded succession in the central part of the Bindura–Shamva greenstone belt of Zimbabwe. The strata comprise distinct, shear zone-bounded tectonostratigraphic units which may be stratigraphically arranged as follows. The lower part of the succession is represented by a transgressive, fining-upward sequence of alluvial fan conglomerate, overlain by fluvial braid-plain pebbly sandstone and marine shoreface sandstone. Detritus was derived from a mid-Archaean granitoid-gneiss terrain situated to the east. Sediment supply and subsidence rate must have been high. Shallow shelf sedimentation was followed by deep-water (sub-wave base) deposition by turbidity currents, giving rise to a thick succession of fine to coarse clastic material. The turbidite deposits were locally overlain by shallow-marine sandstone and fluvial to alluvial fan conglomerate. An upward increase in the abundance of intermediate and felsic volcanic clasts suggests an increase in the proximity of a volcanic terrain, such as a volcanic arc. Deposition was followed by layer-parallel shearing during thrust belt-style tectonism. Major shear zones developed preferentially along the contact between shallow- and deep-marine facies associations. Basin initiation may have been related to extensional tectonics, possibly on rifted continental crust, whereas later stages of basin history were characterized by compression, suggesting a foreland or fore-arc basin setting. Sedimentary facies, stratigraphy, and facies distribution are remarkably similar to some late Archaean sedimentary sequences of the Superior Province in Canada.Les roches sédimentaires du groupe de Shamvaian, âgées d'environ 2,65 Ga, se présentent comme une succession pliée dans la partie centrale de la ceinture de roches vertes de Bindura–Shamva au Zimbabwe. This study investigates the geochemistry and tectonic setting of the 2.66 Ga Banting Group, the younger sequence of volcanic rocks in the Yellowknife greenstone belt, and its relationship to older tholeiitic volcanic rocks of the 2.72–2.70 Ga Kam Group. The Banting Group includes a much higher proportion of felsic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks than the Kam Group, but mafic to intermediate volcanic rocks are common. Banting basalts are tholeiitic and are melts of Archean depleted upper mantle, as are basalts of the Kam Group. In contrast, Banting dacites and rhyolites have much lower heavy rare earth element abundances and generally have higher initial [sup 143] Nd/[sup 144] Nd than Kam felsic rocks. The chemistry of the felsic rocks provides a geochemical signature to distinguish rocks of Kam versus Banting age where complex structures have obscured the stratigraphy. Whereas Kam felsic rocks evolved from mafic parents by assimilation – fractional crystallization processes, Banting felsic rocks have compositions similar to Archean tonalite–trondhjemite–dacite suites, as well as modern adakites, and appear to be melts of juvenile, garnet-bearing, hydrated mafic crust, possibly underplated Kam basalts. The nearby 2.66 Ga felsic complex at Clan Lake mimics the geochemical systematics of the Banting Group, and thus Banting-like rocks may reflect a regional crustal melting event at this time.La présente recherche étudie l'environnement géochimique et tectonique du Groupe de Banting, 2,66 Ga, la plus jeune séquence de roches volcaniques dans la ceinture de roches vertes de Yellowknife, et ses relations avec d'autres roches volcaniques tholéiitiques de Groupe de Kam, 2,72 à 2,70 Ga. Structural information about that portion of the economically important Destor–Porcupine Deformation Zone and its associated faults, which lie buried under many metres of Clay Belt sediments in the region north of Matheson, Ontario, must rely principally on interpretation of geophysical data. In this area, the Archean greenstones of the Abitibi are crosscut by at least three generations of strongly magnetic diabase dykes. The predominant dyke set, the Matachewan, trend north–south, orthogonal to structures in the greenstones. Directional horizontal derivative analysis of the total magnetic field, which has a much sharper angular cutoff than that provided by standard Fourier-based filters, provides a method for separating the magnetic contributions from these two sources. This analysis revealed the existence of a previously unidentified fault (the Winslow fault) located to the north of, and parallel to, the economically significant Pipestone Fault. We also define a second new fault, the Carr fault, that is intimately associated with the existence of a buried felsic intrusive complex in Carr Township.
