Abstract

The majority of civil infrastructure projects involve activities that are repeated across a number of linear units (e.g., highway sections) or scattered units (e.g., multi-bridge rehabilitations). For these projects, Critical Path Method (CPM)/line-of-balance (LOB) repetitive scheduling combines the benefits of CPM and LOB analyses to maintain work continuity across units, yet assumes simple sequential unit order and results in schedule delays for practical projects with non-identical units, constrained resources, and (or) strict deadlines. To improve CPM/LOB scheduling, this paper introduces powerful and easy-to-use enhancements, including (1) designed interruptions to reduce time gaps; (2) efficient resource-constrained first-come first-serve crew assignment; (3) crew adjustment loop to meet deadlines; and (4) representation of flexible unit sequence. These simplified enhancements computationally produce schedules that respect deadlines, individual resource limits, and desired sequence among units. Example projects are then presented to prove that the proposed enhancements offer flexible scheduling features that can meet the strict constraints of infrastructure projects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In a practical context of construction management, a number of special contractors are selected to deliver a multiproject program in a definitive time frame. Research has yet to address how well contractors are matched to projects in scheduling and how to evaluate this criterion in scheduling optimization analysis. This research formulates a novel resource scheduling optimization problem termed multicontractor multiproject matching optimization problem (MCMPMO) based on the current practice of planning modular school development programs. The particular goal of MCMPMO is to determine which contractor is a better match for delivering which project in such a way that the program would be completed by available resources in time, resulting in the highest chances of completing the whole program to the satisfaction of all the stakeholders. A bi-objective optimization formulation for MCMPMO is proposed in the application context of planning modular school development programs. A computer program was prototyped to identify a Pareto front of the MCMPMO problem in a case study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Lean construction (LC) and building information modeling (BIM) are two of the prominent concepts challenging the traditional practices in construction management. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often constitute the largest group in construction supply chains. Increasing BIM and LC adoption amongst SMEs is a key condition for achieving the transformation of the construction industry through BIM and LC. The paper presents a systematic literature review of the adoption of (i) LC, (ii) BIM, and (iii) both LC and BIM in SMEs to evaluate the current literature, and 114 papers were included in the review. The bibliographic and content characteristics of the literature were discussed in detail. It was found that despite the importance of SMEs, the current LC and BIM literature falls short in terms of both number of publications and content of publications. The paper concludes with some generic suggestions for future research and action.

Abstract

Considerable work has been carried out on risk qualitative and quantitative assessment but far less on risk identification. This paper introduces a newly developed method for risk identification, based on micro risk breakdown structure and newly introduced identification procedure called preventive root cause and effective remedial. It also introduces a risk responsibility matrix that distributes the responsibilities associated with each risk among project stakeholders and introduces a newly developed method for qualitative and quantitative assessment of each item using fuzzy set and fuzzy probability theories. Output of the proposed assessment method is pre-mitigation contingency of each risk which represents a quantitative indicator for decision making whether to mitigate or not the risk being considered. Two case studies and one numerical example are presented to demonstrate the applicability and illustrate the essential features of proposed identification, allocation, and assessment methods.
