Bidirectional static loading tests were conducted on two strain-gage instrumented barrettes installed to 72 m depth in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The barrettes were to support a 16-storey building with 5 basements. The soil profile comprised layers of medium coarse to fine sand, medium clay, firm to stiff clayey soil, and dense sandy silt. The region is experiencing an ongoing land subsidence affecting the upper about 40 m of soil and, on average in the city, the ground surface is currently settling 16 mm/year. The test records were processed by means of effective stress analysis to provide the axial pile force distribution, load transfer functions, and equivalent head-down load–movement curve. The analysis was then used to obtain the equivalent pile-head load–movement response adjusted to the planned 22 m deep basement excavation. Load transfer functions were back-calculated from the test records and indicate that the construction will show somewhat large load-transfer movement. However, because the equilibrium plane will be below the subsiding layers, below 40 m depth, downdrag is not expected to affect the building. This paper presents the results of field tests performed to investigate the installation effects of pre-bored grouted planted (PGP) pile in deep clayey soil. The variation of horizontal soil displacements, excess pore water pressures and lateral soil pressures was measured in the PGP pile installation process. The test results show that the drilling and grouting process induced large horizontal soil displacements in the soil within a radial distance of 2 d (d is pile diameter), and the maximum horizontal soil displacements induced by the drilling and grouting process were smaller than 15.9 mm when the radial distance reached 4–5 d. Moreover, the horizontal soil displacements decreased along the soil layer depth, as the superficial soil layers were of small deformation modulus and lateral soil pressure. The drilling process brought large excess pore water pressures in the soil when the radial distance was less than 3 d, and the excess pore water pressures induced by the drilling stage were all less than 55 kPa when the radial distance reached 4–6 d. The drilling process also induced some lateral soil pressure increases in the soil within a radial distance of 3 d, while the measured maximum lateral soil pressure increases were smaller than 10.9 kPa when the radial distance increased to 4 d. On the whole, the excess pore water pressures and lateral soil pressure increases induced by the installation of PGP pile were much smaller than that induced by the installation of driven PHC pile. Moreover, the horizontal soil displacements, excess pore water pressures and lateral soil pressure increases induced by the installation of PGP pile all recovered rapidly after the installation of pile, as the cemented soil in the pile hole was in liquid state after the drilling and grouting stage. Predictions of the unsaturated shear strength with generalized effective stress-based approaches disregard the non-uniform microstructure of remolded fine-grained soils. The study aims at investigating the adequacy of microstructurally-based effective stress to predict the unsaturated shear strength of remolded fine-grained soils over a wide range of suctions. For that purpose, shear strength data are acquired on a silty clay soil compacted at two different dry densities through suction-controlled triaxial tests and unconsolidated triaxial tests at constant water content. The microstructure of the soil at the as-compacted state is determined with mercury intrusion porosimetry and is directly incorporated in different expressions of microstructurally-based effective stress available in the literature. The experimental data suggest that compared to the generalized effective stress, microstructurally-based effective stress expressions provide better predictions of the unsaturated shear strength, especially at high suctions. Also, the use of microstructurally-based effective stress is particularly relevant for remolded fine-grained soils compacted at high dry densities, i.e., with a low proportion of macropores. It is frequently observed that the stress–strain behaviour of soft clayey soils is affected by temperature changes. Development and verification of a reliable constitutive model with consideration of variable temperature conditions are necessary. Due to the significant rheological and other nonlinear properties of clayey soils, the coupled effects of temperature, time dependency, structuration, nonlinear creep, and anisotropy should be considered in the constitutive model. In this study, a new three-dimensional (3D) thermal elastic visco-plastic model is established and verified for the time-dependent stress–strain behaviour of clayey soils considering temperature changes. The model is developed based on the existing elastic visco-plastic models with the equivalent time concept, the overstress theory, and the critical state model. The thermal elastic line and virgin heating line are introduced and generalized to construct constitutive equations for both thermal elastic and thermal visco-plastic behaviour of clayey soils in general stress conditions. After establishing the 3D basic model, further refinement is introduced to consider the nonlinear creep behaviour and structuration for natural and reconstituted clayey soils. The accurate prediction of swelling deformation and(or) swelling pressure if confined for expansive soils is essential for a better design and construction of a geotechnical structure that is built on or in an expansive soil. In this paper, we proposed a new method to quantify the swelling strain and(or) swelling pressure of expansive soils by considering the mineralogical components and their different swelling properties. The proposed multi-component model employs a tandem combination of different sub-molecular oedometers for different minerals, and the total swelling strain of soil was calculated by integrating the swelling strain of each mineral. A linear relationship between potential energy and swelling strain is identified based on molecular dynamics' simulation, which is then incorporated into the diffuse double-layer theory to calculate the relationship between confining pressure and swelling strain for each mineral. The numerical model was then validated by experimental results from the literature, which shows a good agreement with the experimental data in the literature. With the rapid expansion of urbanization, shafts are needed to provide access to tunnelling projects or be utilized for permanent works. Their construction causes ground movements, affecting nearby foundations and buried infrastructure. This study presents an analytical equivalent volume loss approach for predicting three-dimensional ground movements resulting from a circular shaft construction: namely, ground losses in the elastic isotropic half space as a sequence of cavity contractions around the shaft are employed. First, the applicability and accuracy of proposed solutions are evaluated with published case studies and centrifuge tests. Thereafter, the method is employed to investigate the influence of the circular shaft construction on the surface and subsurface soil displacements. The main objective of this paper is investigation of clayey soil setup effects on axial "resistance" and "stiffness" of small-scale piles with special attention on "overconsolidation ratio" (OCR) and "installation method". A consolidation chamber is developed and an instrumented model pile is either driven or jacked-in through saturated consolidated Kaolinite clay at different OCRs of 1.2 (normally consolidated, NC) and 4.8 (over consolidated, OC). The pile was static load tested at different time intervals of 1 h through 90 days. Higher pore pressures are induced during pile installation in NC compared to OC clay. The frictional resistance of OC soil is higher than NC at end of drive as well as end of setup in both driven and jacked-in piles. The frictional resistance of jacked-in piles is greater than driven piles at end of drive, but due to higher rate of setup, the long-term frictional resistance of driven piles is shown to be greater, attributed to more disturbance of the soil during installation of driven piles. Attempts are made to differentiate between the contributions of dissipation of excess pore pressure and non-pore pressure components for each consolidation condition and pile installation method. The paper deals with three issues relevant to the application of TDR methods for monitoring water content in compacted clay soils: (i) the dependence on dry density, (ii) the ability to monitor changes in water content in clay soil approaching saturation, and (iii) difficulties in performing efficient and reliable calibrations. A calibration scheme which inherently controls dry density of the specimen has been developed and applied. The methodology creates continuous calibration curves over a range of volumetric water content from a single test specimen.
