Long-term large deformation geohazards can impose excessive deformation on a buried pipeline. The ground displacement field may initiate pipeline deformation mechanisms that exceed design acceptance criteria with respect to serviceability requirements or ultimate limit states. The conventional engineering approach to define the mechanical performance of pipelines has been based on combined loading events for in-air conditions. This methodology may be conservative, as it ignores the soil effect that imposes geotechnical loads, and also provides restraint, on buried pipelines. The importance of pipeline-soil interaction and load-transfer mechanisms that may affect local buckling of buried pipelines is not well understood. A three-dimensional continuum finite element model, simulating the local buckling response of a buried pipe, using the software package ABAQUS/Standard was developed and calibrated. A comprehensive parametric study was previously conducted to investigate the effect of several parameters on local buckling response of pipelines buried in firm clay. A new strain criterion for local buckling of buried pipelines in firm clay through response surface methodology was developed. In this paper, the new criterion is compared with several existing in-air criteria to study the effect of soil restraint on the local buckling response of buried pipelines. The criterion developed in this study predicts greater characteristic critical strain capacity than in-air based criteria that highlights the influence of soil restraint. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many offshore geotechnical problems—such as cyclic T-bar penetration and lateral buckling of pipelines—are affected by the tendency of fine-grained soils to strain-soften due to remoulding. Careful calibration of the constitutive model parameters that control strain softening is essential for accurate simulation of these processes. This is usually achieved by matching constitutive model response with standard element test data, which implicitly assumes that homogeneous stress/strain fields exist within the sample. However, popular element test protocols (e.g., triaxial, simple shear) cannot apply sufficient deformation—at least as measured at the boundaries—to achieve fully remoulded conditions. This work explores the potential to determine strain-softening parameters experimentally, directly from image-based full-field deformation measurements and external loading data. Artificial data generated from finite element simulations of biaxial compression and T-bar penetration tests, using a non-locally regularised strain-softening constitutive model based on Modified Cam Clay, are then used to demonstrate the potential of the proposed technique. The results demonstrate significant potential for the application of the technique to identify constitutive parameters from full-field measurements even when polluted with modest measurement noise. Based on a study of 45 large slow-moving landslides, it is apparent that for a landslide to travel slowly after failure, the sliding is most likely to be active or reactivated, on a basal rupture surface at or close to residual strength. The likelihood of slow movement after failure is also increased when the inclination of the basal rupture surface is less than the residual friction angle. The slow-moving landslides are all of low rock-mass strength with varying degrees of disaggregation, or they possess soil strength. The influence of lateral margins on landslide restraint is generally small, with landslide movement typically controlled by fluctuations in piezometric pressure. The most commonly observed slow large landslides are mudslides and translational debris–rock slides, followed by particular forms of translational rock slides and internally sheared compound slides. Some mudslides display evidence of short periods of up to moderate velocities. Sur la base d’une étude de 45 grands glissements à mouvement lent, il appert que pour qu’un glissement bouge lentement après rupture, le glissement doit être actif ou réactivé sur une surface de rupture à la base qui soit à la ou près de la résistance résiduelle. La probabilité d’un mouvement lent après rupture augmente aussi là où l’inclinaison de la surface de rupture à la base est inférieure à l’angle de frottement résiduel. Les glissements lents sont tous d’une faible résistance de masse de la roche avec différents degrés de désagrégation, ou ont une résistance de sol. L’influence des marges latérales pour contenir le glissement est généralement faible, alors que le mouvement du glissement est typiquement contrôlé par des fluctuations dans la pression interstitielle.
