The objective of this paper is to compare field test results obtained in a stiff sensitive clay from Quebec using prebored, instrumented sharp cone tests (ISCTs) with those deduced from prebored and self-boring pressuremeter tests (PMTs and SBPMTs, respectively) and vane shear tests (VSTs). Comparisons are also made with triaxial test results. It is shown that undrained shear strengths Su deduced from PMTs and ISCTs are greatly overestimated with respect to the values inferred from SBPMTs and VSTs. As for the shear modulus G, the opposite is true. These discrepancies are considered to arise from initial disturbance and unloading caused by drilling of pilot holes in the case of PMTs and ISCTs. Interpretation problems may be also related to the existence of very high lateral pressures at rest in the clay deposit. L’objectif de cet article est de comparer les résultats d’essais in situ obtenus dans une argile sensible raide du Quebec à l’aide d’essais au cône effilé instrumenté préforé « ISCT »avec ceux déduits d’essais au pressiomètre autoforeur et préforé « SBPMT et PMT, respectivement , et d’essais scissométriques de chantier « VST ». Une comparaison est effectuée aussi avec les résultats obtenus au laboratoire au moyen d’essais triaxiaux. Il est montré que les valeurs de la résistance au cisaillement non drainé Su, déduites des essais pressiométriques et au cône effilé préforés, sont beaucoup plus élevées que celles obtenues au pressiomètre autoforeur et au scissomètre. Par contre, les modules de cisaillement G sont beaucoup plus faibles dans les essais pressiométriques et au cône effilé préforés. Ces différences sont probablement dues au remaniement et au déchargement initial du sol, causés par le forage des avant-trous utilisés pour effectuer les essais au pressiomètre et au cône effilé préforés. A previous paper studied the stability of soldier-pile walls in clay under vertical loading using upper bound analyses. A classical Tresca yield criterion was assumed in that analysis. This paper extends that study by considering a tension truncated Tresca yield criterion in an upper bound numerical analysis of the problem. It shows that assuming zero tension soil strength has a significant influence on the values of the minimum soldier-pile resistance required to ensure stability. Dans un article antérieur, on a étudié la stabilité de murs de pieux verticaux dans l’argile soumis à un chargement vertical au moyen d’analyses à la limite supérieure. On a alors supposé le critère de rupture classique de Tresca. Cet article poursuit cette étude en considérant le critère de rupture de Tresca tronqué en traction dans une analyse numérique de limite supérieure du problème. Cette étude montre qu’en supposant qu’il n’y a pas de traction dans la résistance du sol, cette supposition a une influence significative sur les valeurs de la résistance minimale des pieux verticaux requise pour garantir la stabilité. This paper examines the constitutive behaviour of unsaturated mixtures of compacted sand-bentonite material. Two different techniques have been used to modify soil suction in laboratory specimens to examine the influence of suction on the behaviour of compacted materials. The two methods generated inherent differences in material fabric and therefore in stress-strain behaviour. The difference in microstructure generated by these two preparation techniques created different properties for the two series of specimens. This paper compares the behaviour of the two series of specimens and relates the observed mechanical behaviour to the initial soil fabric created by the two different preparation techniques. Specimens of similar compacted material were taken from two full-scale in-ground experiments conducted at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's Underground Research Laboratory at Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba and sheared using the same triaxial equipment. The results are compared to the results of shearing laboratory compacted specimens. The research program demonstrates the need to understand the initial volume and suction states of plastic clays in order to predict the change in mechanical behaviour following a change in water content.Key words: constitutive relationships, unsaturation, laboratory tests, expansive soils, clays, shear strength.Cet article examine la loi de comportement de mélanges non saturés d'un matériau formé de sable-bentonite. Deux techniques différentes ont été utilisées pour modifier la succion du sol dans des spécimens en laboratoire afin d'examiner l'influence de la succion sur le comportement des matériaux compactés. Les deux méthodes ont généré des différences inhérentes dans la fabrique du matériau, et en conséquence, dans le comportement contrainte- déformation. La différence dans la microstructure générée par ces deux techniques de préparation ont créé de façon inhérente des propriétés différentes pour les deux séries de spécimens. Cet article compare le comportement des deux séries de spécimens et met en relation le comportement mécanique observé avec la fabrique initiale du sol créée par les deux différentes techniques de préparation. Des spécimens de matériaux compactés similaires ont été prélevés de deux expériences à grande échelle réalisées sur le terrain au laboratoire de recherche souterraine de l'AECL, et ont été cisaillés au moyen du même équipement triaxial. Les résultats sont comparés à ceux obtenus sur des spécimens compactés et cisaillés en laboratoire.
