The p–y method as a simplified analysis tool has been widely used to analyze the behavior of laterally loaded piles. This paper develops a novel cyclic p–y elastoplastic model within the framework of the single-surface bounding surface theory. The model can capture the soil stiffness degradation during cyclic loading by incorporating the cumulative plastic displacement to an interpolation function of the elastoplastic resistance coefficient. The model is relatively simple with only four parameters that can be determined from standard soil properties and stress–strain responses measured in direct simple shear tests. The performance of developed model is validated by predicting the cyclic lateral response of piles installed in soft clay during field and centrifuge tests published in the literature. The model can reliably simulate monotonic and cyclic responses of piles under different lateral loading patterns, and capture main characteristics of the pile-head load–displacement curve, such as nonlinearity, hysteresis, displacement accumulation, and stiffness degradation. This paper presents a unified critical state parameter model for evaluating sand and overconsolidated clay, which is named as CASM-S. The model is formulated in terms of the modification of the clay and sand model, i.e., CASM, by incorporating the subloading surface theory with an overconsolidation state parameter R. Although the standard CASM proves to be useful in modelling overconsolidated clay and sand, the model (1) requires the rate of overconsolidated ratio to be constant which is in contrast to the observed behaviour of soils and (2) only allows elastic deformation to develop at the overconsolidated state that may underestimate the deformation corresponding to the peak stress or be unable to predict the actual stress path. By introducing a new material parameter u to those material properties of the standard CASM, the rate relationship of stress–strain for the CASM-S model is developed. The standard CASM can be either recovered or approximated as a special case of the overconsolidation state assumed in the CASM-S. The numerical integration of the newly proposed model is performed by the modified forward Euler method. Validation with undrained and drained overconsolidated clay and sand have demonstrated the capability of the CASM-S model to well predict the observed soil behaviours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a new three-dimensional elastic viscoplastic (3D EVP) constitutive model for the time-dependent stress–strain behaviour of both normally consolidated and overconsolidated clays. There are two major new developments in the 3D EVP model: (i) incorporation of a nonlinear creep function with a limit for the creep volume strain under isotropic stressing conditions; (ii) adoption of a new loading surface function with a smooth shape on the π plane. Based on the "equivalent time" concept of Yin and Graham, the formulation of the new 3D EVP model is derived using the new nonlinear creep function and loading surface function. A new approach to determining all model parameters is presented. The 3D EVP model is calibrated using data from one conventional isotropic stress creep test and consolidated-undrained triaxial tests on soft Hong Kong marine deposits (HKMD). The model is verified by comparing model results with those from both normally and overconsolidated triaxial tests on HKMD and a mixture of kaolin and bentonite.Key words: creep, time-dependent, viscoplastic, equivalent time, stress–strain, constitutive model, verification, clay.Cet article présente un nouveau modèle de comportement tridimensionnel élastique visco-plastique (3D EVP) pour étudier le comportement contrainte–déformation en fonction du temps des argiles tant normalement consolidées que surconsolidées. To analyze the effects of strain rate and viscoplastic strain on consolidation of natural clay, this paper presents a nonlinear viscoplastic model in which viscoplastic behaviour is modeled by a unique effective stress (σ'[sub v] ) – viscous strain (ℇ[sub v] ) – viscous strain rate (ℇ[sup ·] [sub v] ) relationship. The proposed model can consider the effects of strain rate and viscoplastic strain on consolidation, to take into account the difference in strain rate between laboratory and field conditions, and the combined processes of generation and dissipation of pore pressure during consolidation. This model can also predict the behaviour of clay during stepwise loading, constant rate of strain, and relaxation of effective stress. The predicted values using numerical analysis are compared with measured values in laboratory tests and in situ, under an embankment built on soft clay at Berthierville, Quebec. This paper presents a novel analysis for the interpretation of pressuremeter tests in clay. No prior knowledge of the constitutive properties of the material is required. Shear, radial, and tangential stresses are determined at various distances from the probe and for different levels of cavity strain. Total and effective stress paths followed by material elements within the deformed soil are represented on shear stress – normal stress diagrams. The Cam-Clay model for isothermal mechanical behaviour of clays has been extended to take account of the effects of temperature on stress–strain behaviour. The assumptions used in constructing the new model are based on published results and on new data presented in the paper. The model allows prediction of how heating and cooling affect volume changes, pore-water pressures, and strengths for both normally consolidated and overconsolidated saturated clays. It permits modelling of observed reductions in the overconsolidation ratio with increasing temperature. The model provides accessible qualitative explanations for temperature effects that were previously difficult to understand. It will also allow easy implementation for quantitative modelling in triaxial stress fields. Results predicted by the model are compared with data collected by the authors at temperatures up to 100°C. A database of research-quality piezocone cone penetration test (CPTU) and shear wave velocity, Vs, information for Norwegian marine clays has been assembled to study the small-strain stiffness relationships for these materials and to examine the potential use of CPTU and Vs data in combination for the purposes of characterizing these soils. Data for sites where high-quality block sampling was carried out have mostly been used. Improvements have been suggested to existing correlations between the small-strain shear modulus, Gmax, or Vs and index properties for these soils. Recent research has shown that CPTU corrected cone tip resistance, qt, and especially the pore pressure measured during CPTUs, u2, and Vs can be measured reliably and repeatably and are not operator or equipment dependant. Therefore, a new soil classification chart involving the normalized cone resistance, Qt, and normalized shear wave velocity, Vs1, or Vs1 and Δu/[IMG] (where u is the pore-water pressure and [IMG] is the in situ vertical effective stress) is presented. Using this chart it is possible to clearly distinguish between clays of different overconsolidation ratios (OCRs). The role of the degree of microstructure on the behaviour of clayey soils has been the focus of many studies. However, none so far have quantified the evolution of the shear strength parameters for a given soil for degrees of microstructure going from an intact condition to complete remoulding. In the present study, a series of compression triaxial tests have been performed on specimens of the naturally highly structured Saint-Jean-Vianney clay under the following conditions: intact, destructured by straining outside the limit state curve, and reconstituted and reconsolidated after complete remoulding. The results show that the limit state curve is influenced by the level of destructuration reached before testing, and moreover, that the shear strength parameters at large deformation are influenced by the level of destructuration at the beginning of the test. The compression tests infer that the soil seems to retain the memory of its initial microstructure, at least for consolidation volumetric strains up to 14%. The observed behaviour has implications for the understanding and modelling of natural clays; it also explains to some extent the difference in strength parameters used in stability analyses of embankments on soft clays and natural slopes in clay.Key words: clay, microstructure, destructuration, shear strength, large deformation shear strength, triaxial test.Le rôle de la microstructure dans le comportement d'un sol argileux a fait l'objet de nombreuses études. Cependant, aucune d'entre elles jusqu'à maintenant n'a quantifié l'évolution des paramètres de résistance au cisaillement pour un sol donné avec un niveau de déstructuration variant de l'état intact au remaniement complet. Dans la présente étude, une série d'essais de compression triaxiale ont été réalisés sur des échantillons de l'argile de Saint-Jean-Vianney, reconnue comme étant fortement structurée, dans les différents états suivants : intact, déstructuré par compression volumétrique en dehors de la courbe d'état limite, et reconstitué et reconsolidé après remaniement complet. Les résultats montrent, comme l'on pouvait s'y attendre, que la courbe d'état limite est affectée par le niveau de déstructuration avant l'essai, et que de plus, les paramètres de résistance au cisaillement à grande déformation sont influencés par le niveau de déstructuration au début de l'essai. Les essais de compression indiquent que le sol semble conserver la mémoire de sa microstructure intiale après déstructuration par compression volumétrique jusqu'à 14 % de déformation. Le comportement observé a des implications sur la compréhension et la modélisation des argiles naturelles ; il explique aussi, d'une certaine manière, la différence entre les paramètres de résistance utilisés dans les analyses de stabilité des remblais sur argiles molles et des pentes naturelles dans les dépôts argileux.Mots clés : argile, microstructure, déstructuration, résistance au cisaillement, résistance à grande déformation, essai triaxial.
