The paper describes load and resistance factor design (LRFD) calibration for the resistance factor used in the Stiffness Method internal stability soil failure limit state for geogrid mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls. The Stiffness Method was recently adopted in the current American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials LRFD Bridge Design Specifications in the US, and will appear in the next edition of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. The paper describes the details of the calibration of the soil failure limit state which is unique to the Stiffness Method. Calibration outcomes include consideration of the concept of level of understanding in the selection of nominal load and resistance values which is unique to LRFD foundation engineering practice in Canada. A practical conclusion from these calculations is that if product line-specific creep test data are available to estimate the reinforcement secant creep stiffness used for design, then a resistance factor of 1.0 is reasonable for US practice. If only minimum average roll value tensile strength data are available, then a value of 0.95 is recommended for US practice. Tracked vehicles are widely deployed for heavy lifting and transportation on inaccessible terrains such as swamps, bogs, and peatlands. The stability of a tracked vehicle is traditionally assessed only under uniaxial loading conditions and the impact of combined loading from different directions is ignored. This makes the conventional design framework somewhat unreliable. The failure envelope approach has been widely employed to assess the load-carrying capacity of shallow foundations. However, the failure envelopes available in public domain mainly focused on single isolated foundations, ignoring the interference effect between the tracks due to the rigid connection of the vehicle. This paper aims to develop an integrated framework to assess the stability of a tracked vehicle on a soft soil under fully three-dimensional loading conditions. The finite element method is adopted to simulate the soil–vehicle interactions, with the tracks idealised as two shallow foundations in parallel. The stability of the foundation system is described in terms of failure envelopes considering various track configurations and load combinations. Failure envelopes are represented by expressions and ultimately integrated into a multiple-nested function to determine the overall stability factor. This paper aims to analyze and describe the geotechnical behavior of a piled raft foundation of a tall building (53 floors, 172.4 m high) through the monitoring of strains in the building's columns and piles, the stresses at the raft–soil interface, and the foundation settlements. Field and laboratory tests were performed, and associated with axisymmetric and three-dimensional finite element analysis to the assessment of the measured data. The monitoring of the pile strains suggests the occurrence of soil expansion, caused by the raft excavation process, up to approximately 6 months after the excavation was completed. The presence of different soil profiles under the raft, with different mechanical properties, affected the distribution of the foundation settlements and the pile loads. Initially, the average pile loads were concentrated in the perimeter elements, but, as the construction of the building evolved, they tended to become more uniform. The effect of the superstructure stiffness caused successive load redistributions in the columns, which contributed to the maintenance of the maximum angular distortion of the building within the allowable values and reduced the load difference between the piles positioned in opposite soil profiles. The present study proposes a new finite element methodology to analyse the behaviour of flexible combined pile–raft foundation (CPRF) situated in layered soil, in a displacement-based framework. The soil medium is idealised as an advanced elastic Pasternak medium and the piles and raft are modelled as bar and plate element, respectively. The two components of CPRF are analysed simultaneously and displacement compatibility is satisfied at the pile–raft junctions. A number of soil–structure interaction factors, which govern the behaviour of CPRF, are suitably subsumed in the analysis scheme. The proposed method is validated with available analytical and experimental studies. Further parametric studies, investigating the effects of soil layering and raft flexibility on the behaviour of CPRF, are explored. It is observed that the load sharing proportion between the components and the raft deformation pattern depend upon the thickness and position of the soft soil layer in a multilayered soil system. The thickness of the flexible raft plays a pivotal role in determining the behaviour of CPRF, founded in a multilayered soil profile.
