Background: Multiplatform messaging applications also referred to as cross-platform instant messaging play an important role in delivery of healthcare and education with its low cost, ease of use and accessibility., Aim: To evaluate the existing evidence regarding the use of multiplatform messaging applications in facilitating consultations and decision-making processes in the context of burns care, as well as to assess the impact of such applications on burns care and rehabilitation., Method: A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and PROSPERO protocol CRD42021265203. The CASP and JBI tools were used to evaluate the quality of the studies. Eight hundred fifty-three papers were retrieved from PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, EMBASE and LILACS published up to July 2022 (updated August 2023) with no time restrictions applied., Results: An analysis of the seven studies included in this review, inclusive of 16 Multiplatform messaging applications, revealed six themes. These encompassed the utilization of social media for directing and managing clinical practice, as a mode of communication, for evaluating the quality-of-care provision, for investigating available platforms and their technological features, measuring quality of life and for examining issues related to confidentiality., Conclusion: Multiplatform messaging applications offer a solution for individuals with burn injuries to stay in direct contact with burn specialist clinicians for their follow-up and subsequent rehabilitation phase of recovery., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The author(s) declared that they have no competing interests., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Burns are serious injuries associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In Israel, burn patients are often transferred between facilities. However, unstructured and non-standardized transfer processes can compromise the quality of patient care and outcomes. In this retrospective study, we assessed the impact of implementing a transfer form for burn management, comparing two populations: those transferred before and after the transfer form implementation. This study included 47 adult patients; 21 were transferred before and 26 after implementing the transfer form. We observed a statistically significant improvement in reporting rates of crucial information obtained by Emergency Room clinicians and inpatient management indicators. Introducing a standardized transfer form for burn patients resulted in improved communication and enhanced primary management, transfer processes, and emergency room preparation. The burns transfer form facilitated accurate and comprehensive information exchange between clinicians, potentially improving patient outcomes. Objectives: To experimentally compare two fractional ablative CO 2 laser handpieces intended for the treatment of large area burn scars. Each handpiece coverage rate, depth of penetration and application time were measured and compared in a simulation model of large area burns scars using a dynamic/roller handpiece (small footprint) and a stationary/stamping handpiece (large footprint)., Methods: A 30 W fractional ablative CO 2 laser was applied using 2 different handpieces and footprints on a A4 size paper stack. The handpieces were a stationary (stamping) handpiece with 7 × 7 (49 pixels/square shape) and dynamic (roller) handpiece with 7 × 1 (7 pixels/single row shape). For both handpieces the laser settings were fixed at "High" power (30 W), providing an energy level of 100 mJ/pixel. Both handpieces were applied perpendicular to the surface, with the process repeated for the dynamic handpiece with an angled operation. The depth of laser penetration was assessed by the number of pages of paper having visible holes and burn area coverage time measured under each handpiece/condition., Results: The application time was faster and the penetration deeper for the dynamic handpiece compared to the stationary handpiece in both the perpendicular and angled conditions. Chemical burns can cause deep injury and subsequently significant scarring to the skin. The mechanism and pathophysiology of chemical burns is distinct to thermal burns, and recommended first aid approaches are consequently different. Twenty minutes of cool running water is an effective first aid measure to improve outcomes after thermal burn. For chemical burns to the skin, the recommendations are immediate water lavage for 60 min, removal of contaminated clothing if not stuck to the skin and then covering the wound with a sterile dressing. This review assesses the peer-reviewed literature to find the evidence behind the efficacy of cutaneous chemical burn first aid on short term outcomes such as length of hospital stay, depth of burn and longer-term outcomes such as scarring; in particular, the effect of immediate or early water lavage, and the effect of the duration of water lavage. Ocular chemical burns were not included in this review. The review suggests some evidence to support that the early application of cool water irrigation may reduce length of hospital stay and the extent of scarring. Background: The contribution of various volcanic phenomena to immediate soft tissue injury types has received limited attention challenging emergency management planning. This integrative review sought to investigate the immediate types of soft tissue-related injury sustained following volcanic eruptions., Methods: A systematic search was conducted in January 2020 across EMBASE, PubMed, and Scopus databases. 718 articles were retrieved, and 15 studies met the final inclusion criteria., Results: Injuries acquired, and health impacts were categorized by onset-direct/indirect or immediate/delayed. Health concerns following an eruption were categorised: (1) respiratory; (2) ocular; and (3) skin, including deep tissues. Respiratory concerns were attributed to ashfall, volcanic gases and pyroclastic density currents; most ocular injuries to ashfall; and skin/deep tissues to pyroclastic density currents and mudflows., Conclusions: Volcanic eruptions simultaneously present multiple hazards with immediate/short term health consequences across three major levels (i.e., respiratory, ocular, and skin, including deep tissues). Hazard(s) differ by time of onset and associated mostly with the eruptive phenomena. Background: Pain associated with surgical or enzymatic burn wound debridement prevents many burn centres from working outside an operating theatre, creating a burden. Alternatives for general anaesthesia to manage pain in burn patients treated with enzymatic debridements, such as regional anaesthesia, have not been studied in detail. This study explores the different possibilities for pain management during a bedside NexoBrid™ procedure., Material and Methods: We performed a single-centre retrospective study that included 82 paediatric, adolescent, and adult patients with deep dermal and full-thickness burns treated bedside with NexoBrid™ under regional or general anaesthesia. Outcome measures were pain during the NexoBrid™ procedure, the safety of the anaesthesia and the NexoBrid™ procedure, logistics of the bedside NexoBrid™ procedure, and time to wound closure., Results: Forty-three patients in the adult group (43/67, 64%) only presented with burn wounds on one upper or the one or two lower extremities. In 29 of them (29/43, 67%), a NexoBrid™ procedure was performed under regional anaesthesia, which resulted in low pain levels without any adverse events. All seven patients in the paediatric group, where only one upper or one or two lower limbs were involved (7/15, 47%), underwent a NexoBrid™ procedure performed under regional anaesthesia where no adverse events were reported. In these children, the use of regional anaesthesia was associated with a significant decrease in time to wound closure (average treatment effect on the treated = -22.5 days, p = 0.021)., Conclusion: This study highlights that regional anaesthesia administered at the bedside should be the method of choice for pain management during NexoBrid™ procedures because often, it can be adequately and safely performed in all age groups. Objectives: The prevalence of self-immolation is significantly higher in some Middle Eastern and Central Asian Islamic countries than in Western countries. Self-immolation typically occurs among females and can be either an attempt at suicide or an act of protest. This systematic review examined the drivers and consequences of self-immolation in Asian Islamic countries from the perspective of those affected by it, including survivors, family and health care staff in order to understand its higher prevalence in these countries., Method: A systematic review of qualitative studies was conducted in June 2018, using five electronic databases: PubMed, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), EMBASE, Scopus and PsycINFO. Of the 236 papers identified, seven met the inclusion criteria. Authors independently rated the reporting of included qualitative studies and thematic analysis was used to analyse the data., Results: The drivers of self-immolation included marital and familial conflict, male-dominated culture, mental health disorders and economic and social factors. Survivors chose self-immolation in order to express their sense of a lack of control and mostly utilised this method due to its accessibility. The consequences of self-immolation were social isolation, regret, and physical and psychological impacts., Conclusions: The reasons for self-immolation, its prevalence and the demographics of those who choose this means vary significantly between Asian Islamic and Western countries. This review confirmed the impact of culture, tradition, and societal structures and relationships on people's decisions to self-immolate. Trauma impacts people's coping mechanisms with their ability to function posing risks to their capacity to manage and respond appropriately to stressors, and to recover. Trauma informed care recognises the needs of survivors by focusing on system-wide design and support during recovery, minimising the risk of re-traumatisation, and maximising choice and empowerment for new adaptations and post-traumatic growth. The principles of TIC are currently not being fully utilised in burns practice, including for severe burns, with the nature, extent and impacts of trauma not being fully understood or acknowledged. Those who sustain a burn injury have an increased risk for developing psychosocial issues that can extend to the family unit, and people with pre-existing mental disorders are more likely to sustain a burns injury, experiencing extended hospitalisation and rehabilitation and being less likely to adhere to burns care. With the application of trauma-informed care within the burns setting, along with an understanding and acknowledging the link between trauma, burns injuries and mental health, health care professionals can minimise potential negative psychological impacts. Trauma-informed care (TIC) is a model for the relationship of care between service users and service providers that recognises the importance of trauma, past and present, on that person's experiences, vulnerabilities and recovery. Burn injuries are a complex area of healthcare where trauma and the mental health disorders associated with trauma can both precede and proceed a burns injury with complications for recovery. Incorporating a model of TIC in the assessment and treatment of burns patients will proactively work to mitigate and arrest trauma responses, mental disorders and their sequelae in this population. With reference to the existing TIC knowledge base, we propose development of a model for the TIC of burns patients divided into three stages; before, during and after initial engagement with the patient. In the before stage, TIC will require clinical-level change, organisational integration, training and time. In the during stage, five elements are identified; creating safety, screening, collaborative inclusion of the patient in the intervention and recovery planning process, psychoeducation of the patient and supporters, and the use of peer-led services. In the after stage, patients need to be proactively supported through outreach and follow-up. Background: Good family functioning is important to improve outcomes for children who have sustained a burn injury. While knowledge regarding parental distress is increasing, less is known about parents' need for support during their child's hospitalisation., Aim: To systematically synthesise existing research focussing on the support needs of parents of children hospitalised with a burn injury., Methods: An integrative review was conducted using a literature search from multiple health-related databases. Original studies reporting on support for parents during their child's hospitalisation at a burn facility were included. A Ricoeur-inspired method was the framework used for the analysis., Results: Of the 468 identified papers, only seven studies met the inclusion criteria. In total, 521 parents and caregivers from six different countries were represented. Key findings related to the support needs of parents, including the need for information through all stages of treatment, support needs during emotional distress, feelings of guilt and blame relating to the injury and having someone to lean on or being alone., Conclusion: Findings from this review describe parental feelings of distress, guilt and blame and parental needs of information and support. Objectives: Child and adolescent burn survivors benefit from skills to cope with the physical and mental challenges associated with their injuries. Burn camps can offer an opportunity to build these skills. In this study, we systematically review the best available evidence on burn camps in order to better assess their impact on burn survivors., Method: A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A total of 815 articles on recreational therapeutic camps for burn survivors were retrieved from PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Scopus restricted to the English language and published before or by May 2018. Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) for Qualitative Studies Checklist and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist for non-randomized experimental studies were used to assess the methodological rigour of the quantitative studies., Results: Quantitative data did not support any long-lasting impacts on psychosocial wellbeing. Qualitative data showed children, parents and staff all perceived benefits from camp attendance, including companionship and belonging., Conclusion: Further research is required to understand the lack on congruence between qualitative and quantitative data. Research into recovery and adjustment after burn injury has indicated a link between psychopathological symptoms including traumatic stress, distress, depression and anxiety, and worse psychosocial and physical outcomes. The severity of psychological symptoms does not always correlate with that of the burn injury, and symptoms can be ongoing in certain patients for extensive periods, leading to a need for early screening in burns patients for psychological vulnerabilities. One potential factor influencing recovery from the psychological impact of burn injury is adult attachment style, specifically secure and insecure attachment, as this describes how an individual organizes their stress regulation. This cross-sectional study measured: (a) attachment style (via the Relationship Questionnaire [RQ]): (b) negative psychological symptoms (via the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale [DASS]); and, (c) post-traumatic symptoms (via the Davidson Trauma Scale [DTS]) in a cohort of burns patients (n = 104, 51 analysed) in a severe burns unit in Australia during the acute phase of their recovery. Secure attachment style was inversely related to psychopathological symptoms. Secure participants scored significantly lower scores on the DASS (M = 17.63, SD = 17.07) compared to self-rated insecure participants [(M = 42.38, SD = 34.69), p < .01] and on the DTS (M = 14.22, SD = 15.42) compared to insecure participants [(M = 40.54, SD = 35.72), p < .01]. Similar results were found in analyses controlling for covariates of gender, age and burn severity as potential confounders. Introduction: The elderly experience higher mortality rates and poorer outcomes compared to younger burn survivors with similar injuries., Methods: This epidemiological study reviewed records of all admitted elderly burn patients collected from five burns facilities in Israel between 1997-2016. Collected data was limited to the population aged 20+, focused on the population aged 60+., Results: Mortality rates for elderly patients increased with TBSA and increases with age. Regression analyses demonstrated a decrease in mortality of 2.9% (p=0.013) per 5 years, an overall decrease of 11.6% over the 20-year study period, with the decline more significant for older age groups. This decrease in mortality was much larger than that observed for all burns patients over this period. The most common cause of injury in the elderly population was fire, with mortality rate highest for this cause. There was no effect of gender on mortality rate. Mortality increased when smoke inhalation was present for TBSA<20%, with mortality unaffected by the presence of smoke inhalation for higher TBSA. The need for surgery correlates with high mortality rates., Conclusion: This study identified key factors that impact mortality and demonstrated a large decrease in mortality in the elderly patients over the study period., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd and ISBI. Background: A significant burn can severely impact the lives of survivors and their carers. This systematic review sought to incorporate the experiences of guilt, blame and shame across the lifespan for burn survivors, their families as well as the experiences of the parents of burned children., Methods: A systematic review of qualitative studies on the experiences and perspectives of guilt, blame and shame by those affected by burn trauma across the lifespan. The databases, Pubmed, Scopus, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsychINFO were systematically searched. Authors independently rated the reporting of the qualitative studies included. Thematic synthesis was used to analyse the data. The search identified 230 papers. Eighteen research papers met the study inclusion criteria., Results: Guilt and ruminations of guilt, blame attribution and shame and body image were identified during thematic analysis as pivotal factors across the lifespan for burn survivors, their families as well as the experiences of the parents of burn injured children. Accounts presented, suggest that the impact of burns on the lives of the survivor and family covers a diverse spectrum of impact; personal, cultural and societal., Conclusion: From the findings of the literature searches and the post-burn experiences described in this review there is a gap in the psychological care for burn survivors and their caregivers. This is specifically relevant around issues of parental guilt and blame, ruminations of guilt and shame as well as body image. These findings may not be new to burns professionals but the key message is that management of these issues fall short of delivering comprehensive post trauma care. Polyneuropathy is a debilitating condition which may be associated with large burns. The aim of this integrative review is to identify factors that contribute to the development of critical care polyneuropathy in patients admitted to an intensive care unit with a severe burn injury. PubMed, Scopus, CINHAL and EMBASE were searched up until July 2016. Studies/case reports focusing on critical care polyneuropathy for burn injured patients were included. The ten studies, included a total of 2755 burns subjects and identified 128 critical care polyneuropathy patients with an incidence of 4.4%. Three case reports identified prolonged ventilation and development of critical care neuropathy. Overall, factors identified as contributing to the development of critical care polyneuropathy in burn injured patients included prolonged ventilation (>7 days), large and deep total body surface area burns (mean TBSA 40%), and sepsis. Critical care polyneuropathy in burn patients remains challenging to diagnose and treat. To date, there is a lack of long term studies describing the impact of critical care polyneuropathy on functional performance or participation in activities of daily living in the burns population and this is consistent with the general literature addressing the lack of follow up assessments and long term consequences of persistent muscle weakness., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd and ISBI. Heterotopic Ossification (HO) is a rare but severely debilitating complication after a burn. Despite there being literature of varying quality explaining the postulated pathological process, risk factors and treatment for HO, the individual experiences of adults diagnosed with HO following a burn, remains unreported. This study sought to explore and describe burn survivors' experiences of HO to gain a greater understanding of the clinical needs for this unique patient population. A phenomenological inquiry of five men and one woman selected through purposeful sampling collected in-depth interviews analysed using Colaizzi's method of data analysis. Five emergent themes: (1) Early signs and symptoms, (2) Impact on the rehabilitation journey, (3) The role of the health care professionals (4) Loss of independence and an increased reliance on others and, (5) Learning to live with it: uncertainty, hope and adaptation. Eleven cluster themes were identified, highlighting the meaning of each emergent theme. These findings describe the significant impact the unique symptomology of HO had on the physical and psychosocial functioning of participants throughout the rehabilitation journey. Contractures to the cervical region as a result of burns has the capacity to cause restrictions in range of movement, function of the lower face, cervical spine distortion and poor aesthetic outcomes that remain a surgical challenge. Consequently, physical and aesthetic deformities as a result of cervical contractures are reported to cause depression having implications for patients' quality of life and psychosocial wellbeing. At the time this research was conducted, there were no case reports describing a closed platysmotomy approach in burn patients. In this article, we review the literature surrounding closed platysmotomies and present what we believe to be the first reported case in the treatment of cervical contractures utilising a closed platysmotomy approach in a burns patient. A closed platysmotomy approach for the treatment of cervical contractures is a less invasive technique. Objectives: To review hospitalised burn patients from 2004 to 2010 admitted to Israeli burn units and compare these result with data from 1997 to 2003., Methods: Retrospectively, data was collected from the Israeli Trauma Registry (ITR) encompassing all burn admissions to Israeli burn units from 2004-2010 and compared to 1997-2003., Results: Of the 5269 burn patients admitted from 2004 to 2010, 39.8% were non-Jewish. Infants under two years were the prominent age group (24.1%). Second to third degree burns 1-9% TBSA/first degree burns were 71%, second to third degree burns 10-19% TBSA were 16% and those 20%>TBSA consisted of 13%. Only 2.7% involved an inhalation injury. The average length of stay was 11.67 days and mortality rate 3.72%. All data was compared to the previous year's 1997-2003 and trends were identified., Conclusions: Within Israel, high risk populations remain infants under two years of age, males and those from non-Jewish populations. National prevention strategies and campaigns are warranted to inform and educated parents of young children and those at risk of burns. Peer support has long been recognised as an essential component of a supportive network for people facing adversity. In particular, burn survivor peer support is a valuable and credible resource available to those rehabilitating from a severe burn. The aim of this study was to explore burn survivors' experiences of providing and receiving inpatient peer support to develop an in-depth understanding of the influence during the rehabilitation journey. In 2011, twenty-one burn survivors were recruited from four severe burn units across Australia. A qualitative phenomenological methodology was used to construct themes depicting survivors' experiences. Participants were selected through purposeful sampling, and data collected through in-depth individual semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method of data analysis. Central to burn rehabilitation was the notion of peer support having a significant impact on burn survivors' psychosocial rehabilitation. The emergent theme 'Burn Survivor Peer Support' identified five cluster themes: (1) Encouragement, inspiration and hope (2) Reassurance (3) The Importance of Timing (4) The Same Skin (5) Appropriate Matching. These findings demonstrate that peer support assists with fostering reassurance, hope and motivation in burn rehabilitation. A national network based on a clinician led inpatient burn survivor peer support programme could provide burn survivors across Australia, and in particular remote access locations, with the benefits of peer support necessary to endure the rehabilitation journey., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd and ISBI. Although studies have explored the 'lived experience' of burn survivors, little is known about their experiences encountered during rehabilitation. A descriptive phenomenological study was conducted to gain an in-depth insight into burn survivors' experiences' of acknowledgement and acceptance of their injury and the challenges experienced during their rehabilitation journey. A descriptive phenomenological methodology was used to construct themes depicting how burn survivors endeavoured to acknowledge and accept their injury and subsequent altered body image. Twenty men and one woman up to eight years after-burn within Australia were selected through purposeful sampling, and data were collected through in-depth individual interviews conducted in 2011 (N = 21). Interviews were analysed using Colaizzi's method of data analysis. The emergent theme acknowledgement identified four cluster themes that represented how burn survivors came to terms with their injury and an altered body image: (1) reasoning (2) humour (3) the challenge of acceptance (4) self-awareness. Coming to terms with a severe burn is a challenging experience. Reasoning and humour are strategies utilised by burn survivors that facilitate with acknowledgement and acceptance. Burn rehabilitation is a lengthy process associated with physical and psychosocial problems. As a critical area in burn care, the aim was to systematically synthesise the literature focussing on personal perceptions and experiences of adult burn survivors' rehabilitation and to identify factors that influence their rehabilitation. Studies were identified through an electronic search using the databases: PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Scopus, PsycINFO and Trove of peer reviewed research published between 2002 and 2012 limited to English-language research with search terms developed to reflect burn rehabilitation. From the 378 papers identified, 14 research papers met the inclusion criteria. Across all studies, there were 184 participants conducted in eight different countries. The reported mean age was 41 years with a mean total body surface area (TBSA) burn of 34% and the length of stay ranging from one day to 68 months. Significant factors identified as influential in burn rehabilitation were the impact of support, coping and acceptance, the importance of work, physical changes and limitations. This review suggests there is a necessity for appropriate knowledge and education based programmes for burn survivors with consideration given to the timing and delivery of education to facilitate the rehabilitation journey., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd and ISBI.
