The article reports on the study about the relationship between the taste threshold for four psychotic drugs and clinical outcome in a group of psychiatric patients in a ward at Claybury Hospital. The study involves the determination of taste thresholds and rating of severity of illness and clinical improvement. It shows that taste thresholds were higher for patients taking amitriptyline and imipramine compared to patients taking fluphenazine and trifluoperazine. It also indicates that differences in sex and smoking habits do not affect the general association between the degree of clinical improvement and change in threshold for all four drugs. A discussion on the clinical usefulness and pharmacological significance of the results is included.
