Abstract

The article presents guidelines for the management of acute chest syndrome (ACS) in sickle cell disease (SCD). The guidelines include pulmonary embolism, fluid overload, opiate narcosis and hypoventilation may cause or trigger ACS, patients should be monitored for predictors of severity which include worsening hypoxia, increasing respiratory rate and decreasing platelet count, and the hospitals should have a treatment pathway for ACS.
