This article reports that the 48th annual meeting of the British Association of Dermatology was held in Aberdeen, Scotland during July 11-13, under the Presidency of T. E. Anderson. The meeting was very well attended and the numerous guests included many members of the Norwegian Dermatological Society, two of whom, Knut Wereide, the President, and H.K. Krogh, presented papers. The papers were read in the comfortable and well appointed lecture theatre of the Department of Chemistry. The number of papers submitted was larger than ever before, reassuring evidence of the vigorous activity in clinical and laboratory research in Great Britain.

This article focuses on the thirty-ninth Annual Meeting of the British Association of Dermatology which was held in Glasgow on July 9, 10 and 11, 1959, under the Presidency of physician J. Ferguson Smith and Vice-Presidency of physician James Sommerville. The scientific programme began with a series of papers on malignant disease of the face and mouth. Professor E.J. Wayne described the main actions of the compounds in general and the particular properties of the more recently introduced drugs. During the scientific sessions, an exhibition was held in an adjoining laboratory, demonstrating the skill and artistry of the clinical and microscopical photography.

The prevalence of epidermolysis bullosa (EB) in Britain and most other countries is unknown. Patients suffering from the inherited forms of EB and living in Scotland have been traced. Two hundred and fifty-nine affected people from 76 families have been identified, of whom 211 were clinically assessed. One-third of these Scottish EB sufferers had never been seen by a dermatologist. In Lothian, where there appears to be a relatively high prevalence of EB, 75% of patients were unknown to their general practitioners. The point prevalence of all forms of EB at the outset of the study was 49.0 per million, comprising EB simplex 28.6 per million and dystrophic EB 20.4 per million. Extrapolation of accurate data available for the Lothians suggests that the point prevalence of all forms of EB in Scotland is in excess of these figures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a study of all patients presenting with melanoma under the age of 30 in the West of Scotland between the years 1979 and 1986. In this period 1299 melanomas were registered with the West of Scotland Melanoma Group and 99 of these occurred in patients aged under 30 years at presentation. The proportion of melanoma patients under the age of 30 did not show a significant rise over this 8-year period. Eighty-nine of the 99 patients under the age of 30 were fully assessible. They comprised 57 females and 32 males and there were no differences between the younger and older melanoma patients with regard to site of the primary lesion or average Breslow thickness. In the course of this study it was observed that 39 of patients with melanoma under the age of 30 gave a clear clinical history of a pre-existing small congenital or early onset naevus on the site of the developing melanoma.

It first details the procedure and scope of the London Membership examination, passing which is regarded in England as the outward and visible sign of acquisition of this knowledge and applicants for consultant posts. The candidates who pass this examination are expected to be Members of one of the Royal Colleges of Physicians. The Royal College of Physicians of London has had the Membership examination under close scrutiny periodically for many years, and since 1945 there have been no fewer than 5 sub-committees appointed to examine critically the standard and the fairness of the Membership. The article further reports that the Dowling Club has been invited by dermatologist P.D.C. Kinmont to a clinical meeting in Derby, England, on April 10, 1964 and by dermatologist P.R. Montgomery to participate in the meeting of the South West of England and Wales Society of Dermatology in Salisbury, England, on October 31, 1964. Background Up to 5% of patients with melanoma have a family history of a first-degree relative also being affected. Objectives To study such families for germline mutations, to help clarify the gene–environment interaction in melanoma aetiology. Methods Thirty-two families in Scotland with melanoma in two or more first-degree relatives are reported for the first time. Peripheral blood DNA was extracted, and denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography analysis performed on exons 1α and 2 of the CDKN2A gene and their splice junctions. The coding sequences and splice junctions of these exons were sequenced in all samples as confirmation of the chromatographic pattern observed. Results Seven of the 32 melanoma families (22%) have CDKN2A mutations. One mutation, H83N, which has not previously been described in melanoma families, was found in one family. In addition, two families have R112G mutations, one family has a G67R mutation, one has an exon 1α 24-bp duplication where bases 9–32 are duplicated between bases 32 and 33, and two families have M53I mutations, bringing the total of known Scottish families with the M53I mutation to six. Conclusions This study brings the total of Scottish families investigated for germline mutations to 48, and strongly suggests that the M53I mutation originated in Scotland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on a study which investigated the incidence of Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) in Scotland between 2000 and 2010. Topics discussed include the characteristics of the study population, mean annual incidence of MCC, and the prevalence of MCC in other countries. Findings of the survival analyses of the data are cited.

From 1987 to 1989 a campaign to promote the early detection of cutaneous malignant melanoma was conducted in the areas of seven health authorities in England and Scotland (total population 3.6 million). Data were collected on 17,155 patients attending pigmented lesion clinics (PLCs) in each study area during the campaign. After a dramatic rise in PLC referral rates in the first month of the campaign the average monthly referral rate among the target population in the study period settled to an average of 13 per 105, a twofold increase compared with the pre-campaign period. Over 8.5% of patients at all PLCs were seen within 4 weeks of referral from their general practitioners. The melanoma to non-melanoma detection ratio was (1:33). The organization of future early detection initiatives needs careful review and planning, in order to improve their effectiveness in all sections of the population, and to enable health services to cope with the increased work-load. The effect on the detection and characteristics of melanoma, resulting from the Cancer Research Campaign's health education programme to promote the early detection of melanoma in the genera! population, was studied from 1987 to 1989. The seven study areas in England and Scotland yield a target population of 3.6 million. Data were collected from local clinic-based registers, pathology laboratories, and the cancer registries. The average annual incidence rates of melanoma were seven and 12 per 105 in males and females, respectively, age-standardized to England and Wales, 1988. These rates are similar to the national figures for Scotland, where there is a national melanoma register, but higher than those reported by the English and Welsh cancer registries. The incidence was significantly higher in females than males (P < 0.001), and increased with age. Fifty-three per cent and 65% of cases in males and females, respectively, were thin (Breslow thickness &les; 1.5 mm), similar to the national figures from Scotland. No significant decrease in the incidence of late-stage tumours was found in either sex as a result of the campaign. Because of difficulties with ascertainment of cases in England, the main evaluation will focus on future trends in mortality rates for melanoma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The potentially harmful effects associated with stratospheric ozone depletion are widely acknowledged. As the ozone layer principally absorbs ultraviolet (UV) radiation of wavelengths below 290 nm, reductions in stratospheric ozone levels are likely to result in increased UVB at the earth's surface, with the risk of increased incidence of skin cancer. Measuring the sun's spectrum at ground level requires sophisticated and reliable spectral instruments. Results are reported for this for the first time in the U.K. using spectral instruments, showing a significant increase in short wavelength UV radiation at a time of depleted stratospheric ozone. If this trend increases, future ozone depletion could contribute to known risks for cutaneous malignancies of all types. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports that a local education programme in the West of Scotland was shown to improve the prognosis of malignant melanoma. This year the Cancer Research Campaign initiated the first nationwide programme designed to educate the public to recognize early melanomas. Scientists have measured the effect of this programme on the workload of 29 local general practitioners (GPs) and on Pigmented Lesion Clinic (PLC). In addition, they measured the effect of education on the percentage of patients with pigmented lesions referred by GPs to PLC. In the 5 months since the campaign 20 melanomas have been diagnosed in the PLC. Nine were superficial spreading melanomas with a mean thickness of 0-65 mm.

This article focuses on the relationship of exposure to fluorescent light and risk of malignant melanoma. Also there are reports of melanoma occurring in sunbed users and patients treated with PUVA. Researchers therefore, studied the risk of melanoma in relation to fluorescent light and UV lamp exposure in a case/control study of a Scottish population. One hundred and eighty melanoma patients presenting in the years 1979-1984 and 197 control subjects were included in the study. Analysis was by stratum-matched logistic regression for age, sex and city of interview. Melanoma risk was not significantly raised for exposure to fluorescent light at home or at work.
