Increased colour contrast can induce visual discomfort, but there is little research on the effect of hue. Colour is processed via one or more information streams or channels. We hypothesized that hues which activate more than one channel would induce greater visual discomfort, as they will demand greater neural resources. Normally-sighted young observers made discomfort judgments of isoluminant stimuli of varying hue and contrast whilst EEG was recorded. As predicted, stimuli recruiting more than one channel were more uncomfortable, and this increased with contrast. Uncomfortable stimuli showed increased N2 event-related potentials and decreased alpha-band oscillations, potentially indicating increased neural excitability. This is evidence that increased neural responses are related to visual discomfort for chromatic stimuli. Furthermore, it suggests that the origins of visual discomfort are in early visual areas, when colour is represented in a cone-opponent space, rather than later areas where colour representation is determined by perceptual similarity.

The magnitude of repetition suppression (RS), measured by fMRI, is modulated by the probability of repetitions (P(rep)) for various sensory stimulus categories. It has been suggested that for visually presented simple letters this P(rep) effect depends on the prior practices of the participants with the stimuli. Here we tested further if previous experiences affect the neural mechanisms of RS, leading to the modulatory effects of stimulus P(rep), for more complex lexical stimuli as well. We measured the BOLD signal in the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA) of native Chinese and German participants and estimated the P(rep) effects for Chinese characters and German words. The results showed a significant P(rep) effect for stimuli of the mother tongue in both participant groups. Interestingly, Chinese participants, learning German as a second language, also showed a significant P(rep) modulation of RS for German words while the German participants who had no prior experiences with the Chinese characters showed no such effects. Our findings suggest that P(rep) effects on RS are manifest for visual word processing as well, but only for words of a language with which participants are highly familiar. These results support further the idea that predictive processes, estimated by P(rep) modulations of RS, require prior experiences.

The enhancing effect of emotion on item memory is well-established, but emotion’s influence on source memory has proven more elusive. Previous studies recording event-related potentials (ERPs) associated with memory encoding (Dms) and retrieval (old/new effects) showed an emotional enhancement of ERPs related to item memory, whereas ERPs related to source memory yielded contradictory results in the presence of emotion. The present study examined the influence of item emotionality on the neural correlates of memory encoding and retrieval for items and temporal source details. Participants studied negative and neutral pictures in two temporally distinct blocks and, 24 h later, were asked to recognize the studied pictures and the blocks in which they appeared. Our results showed that negative items were more often remembered, with or without source information, than neutral images. This finding of an overall memory advantage for negative images was confirmed by the Dm effects, which demonstrated significant and indistinguishable Dms for negative images remembered with or without source. Overall, Dm effects were greater for negative as compared to neutral images. In contrast to the behavioral and Dm results, an emotional enhancement of the source-related old/new effect was seen over the left hemisphere, suggesting that only negative (and not neutral) images retrieved with correct source were accompanied by memory for additional details. These results suggest that retrieval of temporal source information is not enhanced for negative images but that item emotionality could lead to an enhancement for the retrieval of additional details, contingent on retrieval of temporal source information.

Recent electrophysiological evidence suggests a rapid acquisition of novel speaker representations during intentional voice learning. We investigated effects of learning intention on voice recognition, using a variant of the directed forgetting paradigm. In an old/new recognition task following voice learning, we compared performance and event-related brain potentials (ERPs) for studied voices, half of which had been prompted to be remembered (TBR) or forgotten (TBF). Furthermore, to assess incidental encoding of episodic information, participants indicated for each recognized test voice the ear of presentation during study. During study, TBR voices elicited more positive ERPs than TBF voices (from ∼250 ms), possibly reflecting deeper voice encoding. In parallel, subsequent recognition performance was higher for TBR than for TBF voices. Importantly, above-chance recognition for both learning conditions nevertheless suggested a degree of non-intentional voice learning. In a surprise episodic memory test for voice location, above-chance performance was observed for TBR voices only, suggesting that episodic memory for ear of presentation depended on intentional voice encoding. At test, a left posterior ERP OLD/NEW effect for both TBR and TBF voices (from ∼500 ms) reflected recognition of studied voices under both encoding conditions. By contrast, a right frontal ERP OLD/NEW effect for TBF voices only (from ∼800 ms) possibly reflected additional elaborative retrieval processes. Overall, we show that ERPs are sensitive 1) to strategic voice encoding during study (from ∼250 ms), and 2) to voice recognition at test (from ∼500 ms), with the specific pattern of ERP OLD/NEW effects partly depending on previous encoding intention.

Stimuli associated with reward acquire the ability to automatically capture attention. It is also the case that, with sufficient training, former targets can acquire the ability to capture attention in the absence of extrinsic rewards. It remains unclear whether these two experience-dependent attentional biases share a common underlying mechanism. The present study examined the influence of selection history on attentional capture, and compared its neural correlates with those of value-driven attentional capture reported in Anderson et al. (2014a). Participants completed a four-day training in visual search for a specific colour target. In a subsequent test phase, they performed visual search for a shape-defined target in which colour was task-irrelevant. Response times were slower when a former target-colour distractor was present than when it was absent, replicating attentional capture by unrewarded former targets. Neuroimaging results revealed preferential activation by a former target-colour distractor in sensory areas. A more right lateralised pattern of activation was observed, compared to attentional capture by reward cues. No distractor-evoked activity was found in the caudate tail. These results imply that attentional capture by selection history is primarily driven by plasticity in sensory areas, and that reward history and selection history influence attention via dissociable underlying mechanisms.

Hypnotizability is a trait associated with several physiological correlates including cardiovascular control. The present study aimed to investigate the posterior cerebral artery flow velocity (PCAv) in basal closed eyes (B) and during visual stimulation (VS) conditions in med-highs and med-lows. Twenty-four healthy volunteers were submitted to the hypnotic assessment through the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, form A which classified 13 low-to-medium (med-lows) and 10 high-to-medium (med-highs) hypnotizable participants. Temporal preparation facilitates spatial selection in visual search. This selection benefit has not only been observed for targets, but also for task-irrelevant, salient distractors. This result suggests that temporal preparation influences bottom-up salience in spatial selection. To test this assumption, we conducted an event-related-potential (ERP) study in which we measured the joint effect of temporal preparation and target salience on the N2pc as an index of spatial selection and the N1 as an index of perceptual discrimination. To manipulate target salience, we employed two different setsizes (i.e., a small or large number of homogeneous distractors). To manipulate temporal preparation, we presented a warning signal before the search display and we varied the length of the interval (foreperiod) between warning signal and search display in different blocks of trials (constant foreperiod paradigm). Replicating previous results, we observed that the N1 and the N2pc arose earlier in case of good temporal preparation. Importantly, the beneficial effect on the N2pc onset latency was stronger when the target salience was initially low (i.e., small setsize). This result provides evidence that temporal preparation influences bottom-up processing and, thereby, facilitates spatial selection.

Publisher Copyright: © 2021 The Author(s) Selective listening to speech depends on widespread networks of the brain, but how the involvement of different neural systems in speech processing is affected by factors such as the task performed by a listener and speech intelligibility remains poorly understood. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to systematically examine the effects that performing different tasks has on neural activations during selective attention to continuous audiovisual speech in the presence of task-irrelevant speech. Participants viewed audiovisual dialogues and attended either to the semantic or the phonological content of speech, or ignored speech altogether and performed a visual control task. The tasks were factorially combined with good and poor auditory and visual speech qualities. Selective attention to speech engaged superior temporal regions and the left inferior frontal gyrus regardless of the task. Frontoparietal regions implicated in selective auditory attention to simple sounds (e.g., tones, syllables) were not engaged by the semantic task, suggesting that this network may not be not as crucial when attending to continuous speech. The medial orbitofrontal cortex, implicated in social cognition, was most activated by the semantic task. Activity levels during the phonological task in the left prefrontal, premotor, and secondary somatosensory regions had a distinct temporal profile as well as the highest overall activity, possibly relating to the role of the dorsal speech processing stream in sub-lexical processing. Our results demonstrate that the task type influences neural activations during selective attention to speech, and emphasize the importance of ecologically valid experimental designs.

The problem of spatiotemporal overlap between event-related potential (ERP) components is generally acknowledged in language research. However, its implications for the interpretation of experimental results are often overlooked. In a previous experiment on the functional interpretation of the N400 and P600, it was argued that a P600 effect to implausible words was largely obscured – in one of two implausible conditions – by an overlapping N400 effect of semantic association. In the present ERP study, we show that the P600 effect of implausibility is uncovered when the critical condition is tested against a proper baseline condition which elicits a similar N400 amplitude, while it is obscured when tested against a baseline condition producing an N400 effect. Our findings reveal that component overlap can result in the apparent absence or presence of an effect in the surface signal and should therefore be carefully considered when interpreting ERP patterns. Importantly, we show that, by factoring in the effects of spatiotemporal overlap between the N400 and P600 on the surface signal, which we reveal using rERP analysis, apparent inconsistencies in previous findings are easily reconciled, enabling us to draw unambiguous conclusions about the functional interpretation of the N400 and P600 components. Overall, our results provide compelling evidence that the N400 reflects lexical retrieval processes, while the P600 indexes compositional integration of word meaning into the unfolding utterance interpretation.

The perspective from which body-related stimuli are observed plays a fundamental role in modulating cerebral activity during the processing of others' bodies and actions. Previous research has shown perspective-dependent cerebral responses during the observation of both ongoing actions and static images of an acting body with implied motion information, with an advantage for the egocentric viewpoint. The present high-density EEG study assessed event-related potentials triggered by the presentation of a forearm at rest before reach-to-grasp actions, shown from four different viewpoints. Through a spatiotemporal analysis of the scalp electric field and the localization of cortical generators, our study revealed overall different processing for the third-person perspective relative to other viewpoints, mainly due to a later activation of motor-premotor regions. Since observing a static body effector often precedes action observation, our results integrate previous evidence of perspective-dependent encoding, with cascade implications on the design of neurorehabilitative or motor learning interventions based on action observation.

The allocation of limited processing resources at an appropriate timing should be critical for selecting incoming signals. On the other hand, perceptual organization, which relatively automatically integrates fragmentary elements into coherent objects, should also be critical to decrease the processing load. By indexing behavioral measures and event-related potentials (ERPs), this study examined the effects of temporal regularity, which makes it possible to predict the time at which stimuli occur, on task-unrelated early processing of perceptual organization. Twenty-six volunteers participated in a task to discriminate central targets that were simultaneously but infrequently presented inside a Kanizsa-type illusory figure (KF) or a control stimulus (CS) without perception of an illusory figure. Inter-stimulus intervals were fixed or varied in different blocks. Both temporal regularity and the illusory figure accelerated behavioral responses and enlarged negative ERP amplitudes at 120–160 ms and 280–320 ms post-stimulus over posterior electrode sites. However, importantly, there was no evidence indicating that temporal regularity modulates illusory-figure processing. The finding may suggest that temporal expectation operates in parallel with implicit perceptual organization, although further examinations that involve spatial attention or individual differences are required.

Theta burst stimulation (TBS) is a form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) that can be used to increase (intermittent TBS) or reduce (continuous TBS) cortical excitability. The current study provides a preliminary report of the effects of iTBS and cTBS in healthy young adults, to investigate the causal role of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) during the performance of four cognitive functions: attention, inhibition, sequence learning and working memory. A 2 × 2 repeated measures design was incorporated using hemisphere (left/right) and TBS type (iTBS/cTBS) as the independent variables. 20 participants performed the cognitive tasks both before and after TBS stimulation in 4 counterbalanced experimental sessions (left cTBS, right cTBS, left iTBS and right iTBS) spaced 1 week apart. No change in performance was identified for the attentional cueing task after TBS stimulation, however TBS applied to the left PPC decreased reaction time when inhibiting a reflexive response. The sequence learning task revealed differential effects for encoding of the sequence versus the learnt items. cTBS on the right hemisphere resulted in faster responses to learnt sequences, and iTBS on the right hemisphere reduced reaction times during the initial encoding of the sequence. The reaction times in the 2-back working memory task were increased when TBS stimulation was applied to the right hemisphere. Results reveal clear differential effects for tasks explored, and more specifically where TBS stimulation on right PPC could provide a potential for further investigation into improving oculomotor learning by inducing plasticity-like mechanisms in the brain.

Adaptation to sensory events of long or short duration leads to a negative aftereffect, in which a new target event (of median duration) following the adaptation will be perceived to be shorter or longer than is actually the case. This illusion has been observed in visual, auditory, and tactile modalities. This study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the tactile duration aftereffect, using the contingent negative variation (CNV) and the late positive component (LPC) as a way to characterize the temporal processes. The tactile duration adaptation was found to induce a significant aftereffect within a somatotopic framework. Moreover, the CNV in the contralateral scalp and the LPC in the fronto-central scalp were both modulated by the tactile duration adaptation. Specifically, adaptation to a short tactile duration increased the CNV and LPC amplitudes, whereas adaptation to a long tactile duration decreased them. This modulation was contingent on the topographic distance between fingers, which was only observed when the adapting and test fingers were consistent or adjacent, but not homologous. In sum, these results reveal a coherent behavioral-electrophysiological link in the somatotopically organized tactile duration aftereffect.

In this work visual functional improvement of amblyopic Long Evans rats treated with tDCS has been assessed using the "slow angled-descent forepaw grasping" (SLAG) test. This test is based on an innate response that does not requires any memory-learning component and has been used before for measuring visual function in rodents. The results obtained show that this procedure is useful to assess monocular but not binocular deficits, as controls and amblyopic animals showed significant differences during monocular but not during binocular assessment. On the other hand, parvoalbumin labelling was analysed in three areas of the visual cortex (V1M, V1B and V2L) before and after tDCS treatment. No changes in labelling were observed after monocular deprivation. However, tDCS treatment significantly improved vision through the amblyopic eye, and a significant increase of parvoalbumin-positive cells was observed in the three areas, both in the stimulated hemisphere but also in the non-stimulated hemisphere. This effect occurred both in control and amblyopic animals. Thus, tDCS induced changes are similar in controls and amblyopic animals, although only the last one showed a functional improvement.

Multisensory learning profits from stimulus congruency at different levels of processing. In the current study, we sought to investigate whether multisensory learning can potentially be based on high-level feature congruency (same meaning) without perceptual congruency (same time) and how this relates to changes in brain function and behaviour. 50 subjects learned to decode Morse code (MC) either in unisensory or different multisensory manners. During unisensory learning, the MC was trained as sequences of auditory trains. For low-level congruent (perceptual) multisensory learning, MC was applied as tactile stimulation to the left hand simultaneously to the auditory stimulation. In contrast, high-level congruent multisensory learning involved auditory training, followed by the production of MC sequences requiring motor actions and thereby excludes perceptual congruency. After learning, group differences were observed within three distinct brain regions while processing unisensory (auditory) MC. Both types of multisensory learning were associated with increased activation in the right inferior frontal gyrus. Multisensory low-level learning elicited additional activation in the somatosensory cortex, while multisensory high-level learners showed a reduced activation in the inferior parietal lobule, which is relevant for decoding MC. Furthermore, differences in brain function associated with multisensory learning was related to behavioural reaction times for both multisensory learning groups. Overall, our data support the idea that multisensory learning is potentially based on high-level features without perceptual congruency. Furthermore, learning of multisensory associations involves neural representations of stimulus features involved in learning, but also share common brain activation (i.e. the right IFG), which seems to serve as a site of multisensory integration.

Contains fulltext : 218355.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Different inputs from a multisensory object or event are often integrated into a coherent and unitary percept, despite differences in sensory formats, neural pathways, and processing times of the involved modalities. Presumably, multisensory integration occurs if the cross-modal inputs are presented within a certain window of temporal integration where inputs are perceived as being simultaneous. Here, we examine the role of ongoing neuronal alpha (i.e. 10-Hz) oscillations in multimodal synchrony perception. While EEG was measured, participants performed a simultaneity judgement task with visual stimuli preceding auditory ones. At stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA’s) of 160–200 ms, simultaneity judgements were around 50%. For trials with these SOA’s, occipital alpha power was smaller preceding correct judgements, and the individual alpha frequency was correlated with the size of the temporal window of integration. In addition, simultaneity judgements were modulated as a function of oscillatory phase at 12.5 Hz, but the latter effect was only marginally significant. These results support the notion that oscillatory neuronal activity in the alpha frequency range, which has been taken to shape perceptual cycles, is instrumental in multisensory perception. 8 p.

Photosensitive epilepsy is the most common subset of reflex epilepsy in humans. It is characterized by an abnormal electroencephalogram trait known as photoparoxysmal response (PPR) corresponding to ictal symptomology in response to intermittent photic stimulation. Increased exposure to photic stimulation through technological and societal advance has had a significant impact on the incidence and interest in photosensitive epilepsy. Paralleled scientific developments have deepened our understanding of the neurophysiology underlying photosensitivity, especially in the context of deep genomic sequencing and neuroimaging. Furthermore, given the relatively predictable nature of photosensitive epilepsy, there is substantial interest in translating advancements in this field to epilepsy as a whole. Herein, we comprehensively review the epidemiology, clinical features and novel insights into the mechanism behind photosensitive epilepsy with a focus on the clinical implications of new advancements.

Sensory input for hearing plays a significant role in the development of human brain. Absence of an early auditory input leads to the alteration of important neural regions, which in turn results in a complex process known as cross-modal neuroplasticity. Previous studies related to the structural brain alteration of adult deaf individuals have shown inconsistent results. To address this issue, we investigated the brain morphology in 50 prelingual adult deaf individuals and compared it with the same number of individuals with normal hearing, using structural magnetic resonance imaging and three inter-related but completely distinct analysis methods namely univariate approach (voxel based morphometry), multivariate approach (source based morphometry), and projection based cortical thickness. The findings from all these inter-related analyses suggest alterations in important neural regions such as bilateral superior temporal gyrus, bilateral inferior temporal, bilateral fusiform gyrus, and bilateral middle frontal. These findings also justify a strong ventral visual pathway in the deaf group. We suggest that these morphological alterations in important brain regions are due to the compensatory cross-modal reorganization.

Movement is intrinsically linked to perception such that observing an action induces in the observer behavioral changes during execution of similar actions. Electroencephalogram (EEG) studies have revealed that at the group level, action observation suppresses oscillatory power in mu (8–12 Hz) and beta (15–25 Hz) bands over the sensorimotor cortex – a phenomenon associated with increased excitability of cortical neurons. However, it is unclear whether differences in suppression level across individuals is linked with individual differences in subsequent behavioral changes. Here 32 subjects performed self-paced finger tapping with their right hand before and after observation of a video displaying finger-tapping at either 2 or 4 Hz. Behaviorally, subjects’ rate of self-pace tapping increased following observation, with higher increases following 4 Hz observation. The level of EEG power suppression in the low frequency range (low mu; 8–10 Hz) during observation corresponded to subsequent behavioral changes in tapping rate across individuals. Our results demonstrate that observing actions implicitly shifts subsequent execution rates, and that individual differences in the level of this implicit shift can be explained by activity in the sensorimotor cortex during observation.

Prediction of upcoming words during reading has been suggested to enhance the efficiency of discourse processing. Emerging models have postulated that predictive mechanisms require synchronous firing of neural networks, but to date, this relationship has been investigated primarily through oscillatory activity in narrow frequency bands. A recently-developed measure proposed to reflect broadband neural activity – and thereby synchronous neuronal firing – is 1/f neural noise extracted from EEG spectral power. Previous research (Voytek et al., 2015) has indicated that this measure of 1/f neural noise changes across the lifespan, and these neural changes predict age-related behavioral impairments in visual working memory. Using a cross-sectional sample of young and older adults, we examined age-related changes in 1/f neural noise and whether this measure predicted ERP correlates of successful lexical prediction during discourse comprehension. 1/f neural noise across two different language tasks revealed high within-subject correlations, indicating that this measure can provide a reliable index of individualized patterns of neural activation. In addition to age, 1/f noise was a significant predictor of N400 effects of successful lexical prediction; however, noise did not mediate age-related declines in other ERP effects. We discuss broader implications of these findings for theories of predictive processing, as well as potential applications of 1/f noise across research populations.

A reduced P1 visual-evoked potential amplitude has been reported across several psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia-spectrum, bipolar, and depressive disorders. In addition, a difference in P1 amplitude change to a red background compared to its opponent color, green, has been found in schizophrenia-spectrum samples. The current study examined whether specific psychiatric symptoms that related to these P1 abnormalities in earlier studies would be replicated when using a broad transdiagnostic sample. The final sample consisted of 135 participants: 26 with bipolar disorders, 25 with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, 19 with unipolar depression, 62 with no current psychiatric disorder, and 3 with disorders in other categories. Low (8%) and high (64%) contrast check arrays were presented on gray, green, and red background conditions during electroencephalogram, while an eye tracker monitored visual fixation on the stimuli. Linear regressions across the entire sample (N = 135) found that greater severity of both clinician-rated and self-reported delusions/magical thinking correlated with a reduced P1 amplitude on the low contrast gray (neutral) background condition. In addition, across the entire sample, higher self-reported constricted affect was associated with a larger decrease in P1 amplitude (averaged across contrast conditions) to the red, compared to green, background. All relationships remained statistically significant after covarying for diagnostic class, suggesting that they are relatively transdiagnostic in nature. These findings indicate that early visual processing abnormalities may be more directly related to specific transdiagnostic symptoms such as delusions and constricted affect rather than specific psychiatric diagnoses or broad symptom factor scales.

Previous research has suggested that the motor interference effect of dangerous objects may originate from danger evaluations rather than direct response inhibition, as evidenced by a larger parietal P3 amplitude (which represents danger evaluations) under dangerous conditions than under safe conditions and an insignificant difference between dangerous and safe conditions in the frontal P3 component (which represents response inhibition). However, an alternative explanation exists for the null effect of the frontal P3 component. Specifically, this null effect may be attributed to cancellation between the theta and delta band oscillations, and only theta band oscillations represent response inhibition. To clarify this issue, the current study decomposed event-related potential data into different frequency bands using short-time Fourier transform. The results identified an insignificant difference of theta oscillations between dangerous and safe conditions in the mid-frontal area during a 200-500-ms time window. Instead, decreased alpha oscillations were identified in the dangerous compared with the safe condition in Go trials in the right parietal area during a 100-660-ms time window. Regression analyses further indicated that the alpha oscillations significantly contributed to the parietal P3 amplitude in the right parietal area. In summary, the results indicated that when an emergent dangerous object is encountered during the execution of prepared motor actions, an individual may tend to chiefly evaluate the potential dangerousness rather than directly suppress the prepared motor actions toward the dangerous object.

Modern environments are full of information, and place high demands on the attention control mechanisms that allow the selection of information from one (focused attention) or multiple (divided attention) sources, react to changes in a given situation (stimulus-driven attention), and allocate effort according to demands (task-positive and task-negative activity). We aimed to reveal how attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects the brain functions associated with these attention control processes in constantly demanding tasks. Sixteen adults with ADHD and 17 controls performed adaptive visual and auditory discrimination tasks during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Overlapping brain activity in frontoparietal saliency and default-mode networks, as well as in the somato-motor, cerebellar, and striatal areas were observed in all participants. In the ADHD participants, we observed exclusive activity enhancement in the brain areas typically considered to be primarily involved in other attention control functions: During auditory-focused attention, we observed higher activation in the sensory cortical areas of irrelevant modality and the default-mode network (DMN). DMN activity also increased during divided attention in the ADHD group, in turn decreasing during a simple button-press task. Adding irrelevant stimulation resulted in enhanced activity in the salience network. Finally, the irrelevant distractors that capture attention in a stimulus-driven manner activated dorsal attention networks and the cerebellum. Our findings suggest that attention control deficits involve the activation of irrelevant sensory modality, problems in regulating the level of attention on demand, and may encumber top-down processing in cases of irrelevant information. Novel metaphoric sentences have repeatedly evoked larger N400 amplitudes than literal sentences, while investigations of the late positive complex (LPC) have brought inconsistent results, with reports of both increased and reduced amplitudes. In two experiments, we examined novel metaphor comprehension in Polish, using the same set of literal, novel metaphoric, and anomalous sentences. The first aim of the study was to test whether novel metaphors would evoke larger or smaller late positivity complex (LPC) amplitudes compared to literal and anomalous sentences. Some earlier studies have shown that whether increased LPC amplitudes are observed or not may be related to the task participants are asked to perform, with explicit acceptability judgments being more likely to evoke the LPC effect. The second aim of the study was, thus, to test whether the observed LPC pattern would be the same across two tasks, the semantic decision task (Experiment 1) and the reading task (Experiment 2). Our results replicated the N400 effect observed in earlier studies on metaphor in both experiments. Most importantly, a reduction in late positivity to novel metaphors relative to anomalous sentences was found in both experiments. Additionally, this difference was broadly distributed over parietal sites in Experiment 1, and clearly left-lateralized in Experiment 2, which might imply differences in the involvement of recollection and semantic processes. Overall, these results seem to indicate that both conventionality and task demands modulate the LPC pattern.

Snakes and angry faces are common fear stimuli and both elicit an Early Posterior Negativity (EPN) in the event-related potential, which indicates that they capture early automatic visual attention. But because snakes have been a predatory threat for primates since long before communication through facial expressions evolved, we tested the hypothesis that the EPN for snakes would be more pronounced than the EPN for angry faces. We carefully controlled for differences between reptiles and faces by using lizards and neutral faces as control stimuli. Participants viewed a rapid serial visual presentation of snakes (i.e., threatening reptiles), lizards (i.e., non-threatening reptiles), angry faces (i.e., threatening humans), and neutral faces (i.e., non-threatening humans). EPNs for snakes (vs. lizards) and angry (vs. neutral) faces started to develop around 120 ms after stimulus onset. The EPN was of the same size for snakes and angry faces between 150-225 ms, but was larger for snakes than for angry faces between 225-300 ms, which suggests that snakes capture more extensive early automatic attention than angry faces. These findings correspond with the notion that the visual system is specifically tuned to detect snakes because of the prolonged pressure of snakes on primate evolution.

Signed languages are natural human languages using the visual-motor modality. Previous neuroimaging studies based on univariate activation analysis show that a widely overlapped cortical network is recruited regardless whether the sign language is comprehended (for signers) or not (for non-signers). Here we move beyond previous studies by examining whether the functional connectivity profiles and the underlying organizational structure of the overlapped neural network may differ between signers and non-signers when watching sign language. Using graph theoretical analysis (GTA) and fMRI, we compared the large-scale functional network organization in hearing signers with non-signers during the observation of sentences in Chinese Sign Language. We found that signed sentences elicited highly similar cortical activations in the two groups of participants, with slightly larger responses within the left frontal and left temporal gyrus in signers than in non-signers. Crucially, further GTA revealed substantial group differences in the topologies of this activation network. Globally, the network engaged by signers showed higher local efficiency (t (24) = 2.379, p = 0.026), small-worldness (t (24) = 2.604, p = 0.016) and modularity (t (24) = 3.513, p = 0.002), and exhibited different modular structures, compared to the network engaged by non-signers. Locally, the left ventral pars opercularis served as a network hub in the signer group but not in the non-signer group. These findings suggest that, despite overlap in cortical activation, the neural substrates underlying sign language comprehension are distinguishable at the network level from those for the processing of gestural action.

Attention plays an important role in the processing of error, but only a few studies have explored the relationship between them. The current study used a dual-task paradigm, combining the classic flanker task with a working memory load task, to explore how changes in the amount of attentional resources modulate error negativity (Ne) and error positivity (Pe). The results showed that the reduction of attentional resources overall caused a decrease in Pe amplitude, especially in the late stage of Pe, which had a significant diminution in amplitude. However, changes in the amount of attentional resources did not cause significant changes in the Ne amplitude. These results suggest that the early stage of error processing in the Ne time window is less affected by attention, but the Pe stage is regulated by attentional resources, especially in the late Pe stage.

Successfully categorizing objects requires discriminating between relevant and irrelevant dimensions (e.g., shape, color). Categorization can lead to changes in the visual system that stretch psychological space, making relevant dimensions more distinct and irrelevant dimensions more similar. These changes are known as dimensional modulation (DM) and they can be both stable and flexible in nature. The current study examined the interaction between stable DM and flexible DM, as well as the time course of relative changes in similarity. Using a two-dimensional space of cars, participants learned to categorize the space and then completed a target identification task during EEG recording. We found that attention, operationally defined as the selection negativity, was sensitive to category-relevance and appeared to selectively enhance previously irrelevant differences in the service of a target detection task. In contrast, we found that late decisional stages, operationally defined as the P3 b, were less sensitive to relevance and instead more sensitive to the number of morphsteps that separated targets from non-targets. Thus, it appears that relative similarity between targets and non-targets dynamically changed over the time course of individual decisions. Similarity between exemplars was greater along the irrelevant than the relevant dimension early on in the time course but a compensatory allocation of attention led to similarity being optimized among all dimensions for later stages. This finding is important because it 1) provides a new source of converging evidence for stable DM and 2) links a neural measure of attentional modulation with facilitation of an unpracticed, but task-relevant perceptual dimension.

Top-down controlled selective or divided attention to sounds and visual objects, as well as bottom-up triggered attention to auditory and visual distractors, has been widely investigated. However, no study has systematically compared brain activations related to all these types of attention. To this end, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure brain activity in participants performing a tone pitch or a foveal grating orientation discrimination task, or both, distracted by novel sounds not sharing frequencies with the tones or by extrafoveal visual textures. To force focusing of attention to tones or gratings, or both, task difficulty was kept constantly high with an adaptive staircase method. A whole brain analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed fronto-parietal attention networks for both selective auditory and visual attention. A subsequent conjunction analysis indicated partial overlaps of these networks. However, like some previous studies, the present results also suggest segregation of prefrontal areas involved in the control of auditory and visual attention. The ANOVA also suggested, and another conjunction analysis confirmed, an additional activity enhancement in the left middle frontal gyrus related to divided attention supporting the role of this area in top-down integration of dual task performance. Distractors expectedly disrupted task performance. However, contrary to our expectations, activations specifically related to the distractors were found only in the auditory and visual cortices. This suggests gating of the distractors from further processing perhaps due to strictly focused attention in the current demanding discrimination tasks.

The integration of text and picture is the core of multimedia information processing. Relevant theories suggest that text and picture are processed through different channels in the early stage, and integrated in the late stage of processing. Based on these theories, the current study adopted measures of event-related potentials to examine the cognitive and neural processes of text-picture integration. The results showed that in the early stage of text-picture integration, picture processing evoked a more negative N1 over the occipital area and a N300 over the prefrontal area, which might reflect the discrimination process of visual stimuli and the imagery representation of the picture, respectively; in the late stage, the text-picture induced a N400 in the central area and an LPC over the central, parietal and temporal areas, which might be associated with the semantic activation and integration of text and picture, respectively. These results not only provide support for existing theories, but also further elucidate the dynamic neural processing of text-picture integration in terms of its temporal and spatial characteristics.

Most ERP studies on facial expressions of emotion have yielded inconsistent results regarding the time course of emotion effects and their possible modulation by task demands. Most studies have used classical statistical methods with a high likelihood of type I and type II errors, which can be limited with Mass Univariate statistics. FMUT and LIMO are currently the only two available toolboxes for Mass Univariate analysis of ERP data and use different fundamental statistics. Yet, no direct comparison of their output has been performed on the same dataset. Given the current push to transition to robust statistics to increase results replicability, here we compared the output of these toolboxes on data previously analyzed using classic approaches ( Itier & Neath-Tavares, 2017 ). The early (0–352 ms) processing of fearful, happy, and neutral faces was investigated under three tasks in a within-subject design that also controlled gaze fixation location. Both toolboxes revealed main effects of emotion and task but neither yielded an interaction between the two, confirming the early processing of fear and happy expressions is largely independent of task demands. Both toolboxes found virtually no difference between neutral and happy expressions, while fearful (compared to neutral and happy) expressions modulated the N170 and EPN but elicited maximum effects after the N170 peak, around 190 ms. Similarities and differences in the spatial and temporal extent of these effects are discussed in comparison to the published classical analysis and the rest of the ERP literature.

Visual segregation of moving objects is a considerable computational challenge when the observer moves through space. Recent psychophysical studies suggest that directionally congruent, moving auditory cues can substantially improve parsing object motion in such settings, but the exact brain mechanisms and visual processing stages that mediate these effects are still incompletely known. Here, we utilized multivariate pattern analyses (MVPA) of MRI-informed magnetoencephalography (MEG) source estimates to examine how crossmodal auditory cues facilitate motion detection during the observer's self-motion. During MEG recordings, participants identified a target object that moved either forward or backward within a visual scene that included nine identically textured objects simulating forward observer translation. Auditory motion cues 1) improved the behavioral accuracy of target localization, 2) significantly modulated the MEG source activity in the areas V2 and human middle temporal complex (hMT+), and 3) increased the accuracy at which the target movement direction could be decoded from hMT+ activity using MVPA. The increase of decoding accuracy by auditory cues in hMT+ was significant also when superior temporal activations in or near auditory cortices were regressed out from the hMT+ source activity to control for source estimation biases caused by point spread. Taken together, these results suggest that parsing object motion from self-motion-induced optic flow in the human extrastriate visual cortex can be facilitated by crossmodal influences from auditory system.

Visual fixation (VF) of a target is a possible, although atypical, feature of the Unresponsive Wakefulness Syndrome (UWS). Whether VF may indicate residual awareness in these patients is debatable, since it may simply subtend a series of reflex processes. Objective tools should therefore be used to identify aware VF, which depends on the integrity of visuomotor networks encompassing frontal-parietal-occipital areas. The aim of our study was to detect residual visuomotor network functionality potentially sustaining aware VF. To this end, we evaluated the visuomotor integration (VMI) and visual P300 patterns in a chronic Disorder of Consciousness (DOC) sample and a control group of healthy individuals (HC), using an associative stimulation protocol combining transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with visual stimulation through transorbital alternating current stimulation. The Minimally Conscious State (MCS) patients showed preserved patterns of VMI and P300, whereas nearly all the UWS patients showed no significant VMI. Notably, the electrophysiological findings were correlated with the visual domain of the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised. Nonetheless, two fixating UWS individuals had a VMI similar to MCS patients. Our data suggest that some UWS patients showing VF could be aware, but unable to manifest it clearly, probably because of a severe motor output impairment, which is a condition compatible with the Functional Locked-In Syndrome.

The human cortical system for face perception comprises a network of connected regions including the middle fusiform gyrus ("fusiform face area" or FFA), the inferior occipital gyrus ("occipital face area" or OFA), and the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS). Here, we sought to investigate how transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to the OFA affects activity within the face processing network. We used offline repetitive TMS to temporarily introduce neural noise in the right OFA in healthy subjects. We then immediately performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure changes in blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signal across the face network using an fMR-adaptation (fMR-A) paradigm. We hypothesized that TMS to the right OFA would induce abnormal face identity coding throughout the face processing network in regions to which it has direct or indirect connections. Indeed, BOLD signal for face identity, but not non-face (butterfly) identity, decreased in the right OFA and FFA following TMS to the right OFA compared to both sham TMS and TMS to a control site, the nearby object-related lateral occipital area (LO). Further, TMS to the right OFA decreased face-related activation in the left FFA, without any effect in the left OFA. Our findings indicate that TMS to the right OFA selectively disrupts face coding at both the stimulation site and bilateral FFA. TMS to the right OFA also decreased BOLD signal for different identity stimuli in the right pSTS. Together with mounting evidence from patient studies, we demonstrate connectivity of the OFA within the face network and that its activity modulates face processing in bilateral FFA as well as the right pSTS. Moreover, this study shows that deep regions within the face network can be remotely probed by stimulating structures closer to the cortical surface.

A visual stimulus is defined as ambiguous when observers perceive it as having at least two distinct and spontaneously alternating interpretations. Neuroimaging studies suggest an involvement of a right fronto-parietal network regulating the balance between stable percepts and the triggering of alternative interpretations. As spontaneous perceptual reversals may occur even in the absence of attention to these stimuli, we investigated neural activity patterns in response to perceptual changes of ambiguous Necker cube under different amounts of working memory load using a dual-task design. We hypothesized that the same regions that process working memory load are involved in perceptual switching and confirmed the prediction that perceptual reversals led to fMRI responses that linearly depended on load. Accordingly, posterior Superior Parietal Lobule, anterior Prefrontal and Dorsolateral Prefrontal cortices exhibited differential BOLD signal changes in response to perceptual reversals under working memory load. Our results also suggest that the posterior Superior Parietal Lobule may be directly involved in the emergence of perceptual reversals, given that it specifically reflects both perceptual versus real changes and load levels. The anterior Prefrontal and Dorsolateral Prefrontal cortices, showing a significant interaction between reversal levels and load, might subserve a modulatory role in such reversals, in a mirror symmetric way: in the former activation is suppressed by the highest loads, and in the latter deactivation is reduced by highest loads, suggesting a more direct role of the aPFC in reversal generation.

This study investigated the changes in event-related potential (ERP) waveforms under different central visual field conditions using a three-stimulus oddball paradigm. Circular checkerboards were presented in the center of a computer screen with a visual angle of 5°, 10°, 20°, or 30°, which were regarded as target stimuli. The ERP waveforms were analyzed separately for different stimulus conditions. Participants responded more slowly and had lower accuracy for the 30° visual field level than the other three visual field levels. The ERP results revealed that the amplitudes of target P2 gradually increased from the 5° to 20° visual field conditions, while they decreased abruptly in the 30° visual field condition. Regional effects showed that the amplitudes of target P2 were larger from the occipital electrodes than that from the temporal sites. Besides the negative-going deflection of target N2 and visual mismatch negativity (vMMN) components having an increasing tendency with expansion of the visual field, there was also a trend that the amplitudes of target P3 were decreased and the peak latencies were prolonged with increasing visual field ranges. In addition, the latencies of the difference P3 had a similar trend to the latencies of the target P3, and all the differences were more obvious at the 30° visual field level. The study demonstrated that middle-late components of ERPs can reflect changes in the visual field to some extent.

This EEG study (N=33) examined event-related potentials associated with conflict between activated responses in the Stroop task, in order to examine the conflict monitoring theory of cognitive control, which predicts the strength of exerted control to be proportional to the detected level of conflict. However, existing research manipulated the sole presence/absence of conflict, but not its exact level. Here, by using a modified color-word task that allowed multiple correct responses for target colors, as well as multiple incorrect responses for distractor words, we manipulated the level of conflict among activated responses (and not only its presence). We expected that a larger number of activated incorrect responses (i.e., a presumably higher conflict) would entail more pronounced conflict-related potentials. Indeed, two components of the N450 wave, parietal negativity and medial frontal negativity, were more negatively deflected when conflict was higher, than when it was lower, visibly responding to the level of conflict. Slow potential weakly responded to the sheer presence of conflict, but not to its level. These results can be plausibly explained by the conflict monitoring theory with a modified conflict evaluation formula, whereas they are at odds with several alternative theories of cognitive control.

Visual words and faces activate similar networks but with complementary hemispheric asymmetries, faces being lateralized to the right and words to the left. A recent theory proposes that this reflects developmental competition between visual word and face processing. We investigated whether this results in an inverse correlation between the degree of lateralization of visual word and face activation in the fusiform gyri. 26 literate right-handed healthy adults underwent functional MRI with face and word localizers. We derived lateralization indices for cluster size and peak responses for word and face activity in left and right fusiform gyri, and correlated these across subjects. A secondary analysis examined all face- and word-selective voxels in the inferior occipitotemporal cortex. No negative correlations were found. There were positive correlations for the peak MR response between word and face activity within the left hemisphere, and between word activity in the left visual word form area and face activity in the right fusiform face area. The face lateralization index was positively rather than negatively correlated with the word index. In summary, we do not find a complementary relationship between visual word and face lateralization across subjects. The significance of the positive correlations is unclear: some may reflect the influences of general factors such as attention, but others may point to other factors that influence lateralization of function.

This study explored how temporal context influences recognition. In an ERP experiment, subjects were asked to judge whether pictures, presented one at a time, had been seen since the previous appearance of a special reset screen. The reset screen separated sequences of successively presented stimuli and signaled a change in temporal context. A "new-repeat" picture was one that had been seen before but was to be called "new" because it had not appeared since the previous reset screen. New-repeat pictures elicited a more negative FN400 component than did "old" pictures even though both had seen before during the experiment. This suggests that familiarity, as indexed by the FN400, is sensitive to temporal context. An earlier frontopolar old/new effect distinguished pictures that were seen for the first time in the experiment from all other pictures. The late positive component (LPC), which is typically greater for old stimuli, was smaller for new-repeat pictures than for pictures seen for the first time in the experiment. Finally, individual differences in task performance were predicted by the differences in amplitude of P3b that was evoked by the onset of the reset screen.

In auditory speech processing, phonological stress functions as an attention holding cue, which facilitates detection of mispronunciations and phonetic deviants in strong syllables as compared to weak ones. Whereas silent reading involves activation of phonological information including word stress, it is not clear whether it has any functional relevance for visual language processing. We investigated whether phonological stress impacts orthographic processing such as detection of misspellings in silent reading. In an ERP experiment, participants silently read intact and misspelled German words. We manipulated the strength of the misspelled syllable (strong vs. weak) as well as its position (word-initial vs. word-middle). No effect of stress was observed for misspellings occurring in a word-initial position suggesting that misspellings in word-initial position disrupt visual word processing regardless of the phonological strength of the first syllable. In contrast, phonological strength modulated the ERPs when misspellings occurred in the middle of the word: misspellings embedded in strong syllables enhanced the P600 and the N400-like component compared to misspellings in weak syllables. In this case, i.e., when misspellings occur in the middle of a letter string, lexical access may be hindered more when errors occur in strong syllables, as reflected in the enhanced N400 in strong compared to weak syllables. This in turn may facilitate active reanalysis as mirrored in the increased P600 in the strong condition. The findings are discussed in the context of the relatively late activation of phonological form in visual word recognition and its interaction with other perceptual visual information. Overall, the results demonstrate the functional significance of phonological stress in visual word processing.

The emergence of visual saliency has been widely studied in the primary visual cortex and the superior colliculus (SC) in mammals. There are fewer studies on the pop-out response to motion direction contrasting stimuli taken in the optic tectum (OT, homologous to mammalian SC), and these are mainly of owls and fish. To our knowledge the influence of spatial luminance has not been reported. In this study, we have recorded multi-units in pigeon OT and analyzed the tectal response to spatial luminance contrasting, motion direction contrasting, and contrasting stimuli from both feature dimensions. The comparison results showed that 1) the tectal response would pop-out in either motion direction or spatial luminance contrasting conditions. 2) The modulation from motion direction contrasting was independent of the temporal luminance variation of the visual stimuli. 3) When both spatial luminance and motion direction were salient, the response of tectal neurons was modulated more intensely by motion direction than by spatial luminance. The phenomenon was consistent with the innate instinct of avians in their natural environment. This study will help to deepen the understanding of mechanisms involved in bottom-up visual information processing and selective attention in the avian.

Humans flexibly adapt their behavior using feedback from their environment. This ability is impaired in old age, but recent research suggests this mainly concerns processing of negative feedback and that positive feedback might be spared. The aim of this study was to test this idea of an age-related positivity bias against the possibility of a strategic focus on relevant feedback due to limited processing resources in old age. For this purpose, 17 younger (aged 19 to 28 years) and 18 older (aged 69 to 79 years) adults performed a learning task in which they learned the correct response to a stimulus via feedback. Learning relevance was manipulated by varying the informational value of positive and negative feedback. To manipulate available processing resources, the task was conducted under two difficulty levels. Our results showed no hint of a positivity bias in older adults. On the contrary, we found that they learned worse when the information value of the negative feedback was reduced. This is in line with the idea that the positivity effect in older adults reflects a strategic change in motivation, i.e., older adults preferably process positive information if they have a choice, but they can process negative information as effectively when it is relevant for the task at hand. For younger adults, negative feedback seemed to be more important, too, because it modulated later higher-order feedback processing as indexed by the P3b. They showed reduced working memory updating and a more frontal P3b distribution indicating a higher processing effort in conditions in which the information value of negative feedback was reduced.

Responses of direction selective (DS) units of retinal and tectal origin were recorded extracellularly from the tectum opticum (TO) of immobilized fish. The data were collected from three cyprinid species - goldfish, carp and roach. Responses of the retinal DS ganglion cells (GCs) were recorded from their axon terminals in the superficial layers of TO. According to their preferred directions DS GCs, characterized by small receptive fields (3-8°), can be divided in three distinct groups, each group containing ON and OFF subtypes approximately in equal quantity. Conversely, direction-selective tectal neurons (DS TNs), recorded at two different tectal levels deeper than the zone of retinal DS afferents, are characterized by large receptive fields (up to 60°) and are indifferent to any sign of contrast i.e. can be considered as ON-OFF type units. Fish DS TNs unlike the retinal DS GCs, select four preferred directions. Three types of tectal DS units prefer practically the same directions as those already selected on the retinal level - caudo-rostral, dorso-ventral and ventro-dorsal. The fact that three preferred directions of DS GCs and DS TNs coincide allows us to assume that three types of DS GCs are input neurons for corresponding types of DS TNs. The fourth group of DS TNs has the emergent rostro-caudal preference not explicitly present in any of the DS GC inputs. These units are recorded in deep TO layers exclusively. Receptive fields of these DS neurons could be entirely formed on the tectal level. Possible interrelations between retinal and tectal DS units are discussed.

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is the center of the mammalian circadian system. Environmental photic signals shifts the phase of the circadian rhythm in the SCN except during the dead zone, when the photic signal is gated somewhere on the way from the retina to the neurons in the SCN. Here we examined the phase of the dead zone after an abrupt delay of the LD cycles for several days by observing the mc-Fos induction in the SCN by light pulses. After an abrupt shift of the LD cycles, the dead zone showed a slow phase shift, about two hours per day, which was well corresponded with the slow phase shift of the rest-activity cycles. In our previous study we demonstrated that, after an abrupt shift of the LD cycles, the SCN showed transient endogenous desynchronization between shell and core regions that showed a slow and a rapid shift of the circadian rhythms, respectively. Therefore, the present findings on the phase shift of the dead zone after the LD cycles shift suggest that the phase of the dead zone is under the control of the timing signals from the shell region of the SCN.

The human brain is an efficient, adaptive, and predictive machine, constructing a generative model of the environment that we then perceive and become conscious of. Here, we show that different types of prediction-errors – the discrepancies between top-down expectations and bottom-up sensory input – are integrated across processing levels and sensory modalities of the cortical hierarchy. We designed a novel, hybrid protocol in which five prediction-establishing sounds were played in rapid succession (e.g., “meow”, “meow”, “meow”, etc.), followed by either a standard (e.g., “meow”) or a deviant (e.g., “woof”) prime sound, then a visual target word that was either congruent or incongruent (e.g., “cat” or “dog”) with the prime sound. We found that the deviants elicited a more negative voltage than the standards at about 150 ms – the mismatch negativity (MMN), an event-related potential (ERP) sensitive to low-level perceptual violations – and that the incongruent words elicited a more negative voltage than the congruent words at about 350 ms – the N400, an ERP sensitive to high-level semantic violations. We also found that the N400 was context-dependent: the N400 was larger when the target words were preceded by a standard than a deviant. Our results suggest that perceptual prediction-errors modulate subsequent semantic prediction-errors. We conclude that our results are consistent with one of the most important assumptions of predictive coding theories: hierarchical prediction-error processing.
