The Scandinavian Ice Sheet reached the Sudetes and Carpathian Mountains during the Elsterian glaciation. A long ice‐sheet piedmont marginal zone affected by the rugged mountain foreland topography and associated slopes originated. This study focuses on the hilly Rychleby Mts. foreland (Eastern Sudetes, Czechia), which was a part of the piedmont marginal foreland zone of the ice sheet. The basal regime was reconstructed through an investigation of the sedimentology, structural features, and the nature of ice‐sheet erosion of preglacial landscapes evident at two sites located ~3–5 km inside the maximum ice‐sheet extent. These sites show a preglacial relief buried by sub‐ to supraglacial sediments. The sites were located under an ice cover of max. 200 m. Evidence of cold‐based conditions (including palaeotors with delicate structures on the bedrock, almost absent striations on clasts, originally frozen unlithified sedimentary rafts) exists at both sites. Permafrost composed of coarse‐grained sediments was subject to brittle deformation at the base of the ice sheet, whereas permafrost composed of fine‐grained sediments underwent ductile deformation. The margin of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet in the Rychleby Mts. foreland was cold‐based, therefore glacial erosion was not sufficient to significantly remodel the palaeotors into roches moutonnées. In this study, we reconstruct the style and timing of the late Quaternary glaciation pattern in a monsoon‐influenced precipitation‐deprived region (Dhauliganga basin) of the Central Himalaya, India. We present detailed glacial geomorphological mapping, aided by topographic maps, satellite data, Google Earth images, global positioning system survey, and fieldwork (2012–2016), supported by optically stimulated luminescence dating. Our estimations for the magnitude and timing of glaciations in the Dunagiri Glacier valley suggest five sets of glacial advances. The oldest and most extensive glaciation in the valley is Dunagiri Glacial Stage‐I (DGS‐I), represented by a discontinuous moraine ridge that extends down to ~10 km (~2700 m a.s.l.) from the present‐day snout and formed 13±3 ka ago. The DGS‐II stage is present in the form of a small moraine ridge (~3000 m a.s.l.) that formed 10±2 ka ago. The DGS‐III and DGS‐IV glacial stages are 5–6 and 3.5 ka old, respectively. The youngest stage (DGS‐V) of glaciation belongs to the neoglaciation episode ~1 ka old. DGS‐I was the most extensive glaciation in the valley and corresponds to the global Last Glacial Maximum. The glaciation pattern has been correlated with the estimates of present‐day glacial sensitivity to climate and explained as forcing factors sensitive to temperature and/or precipitation changes in the region. The observations based on prevailing climate correlations aided with available glacial chronologies underline the fact that the glacial valleys situated in precipitation‐deprived regions have preserved a delayed response of glaciations to regional climatic events. Estimates for the timing and pattern of glaciation in the present study suggest a different glacial response for modern climatic changes than previously assumed. We suggest that individual glacier advances differ regionally and, therefore, should not be interpreted as being reflective of a change in the whole geographical belt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge of the glacial chronologies for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) helps in understanding the interactions between climate, topography and glacier development. In this sense, the investigation of the Lake Orta moraine amphitheatre (Alpine foreland, northern Italy) allowed spatial and temporal reconstruction of the Orta Glacier. The end‐moraine system was investigated by means of geomorphological field surveys, analysis of 13 rock samples for cosmogenic 10Be and 36Cl concentrations, and remote sensing analysis. The dating results indicate that the age of the outer moraine belt is concordant with the LGM culmination at 26.5–23 ka, as found in other amphitheatres in the Alps. This new age estimate of the outermost moraines shows that the maximum extent of the Orta Glacier during the LGM was significantly bigger than recently suggested. A younger stabilization phase of the glacier front at about 19 ka indicates that the onset of the withdrawal of glaciers from the lower Alpine valleys started later. Provenance analysis of the boulders shows that the greatest contribution of ice to the Orta Glacier came from the Anzasca Valley rather than the major Ossola Valley. This reflects the closeness (about 45 km) to the foreland of the high‐elevated accumulation area of the Monte Rosa massif (4634 m a.s.l.), whose eastern glacier seems to have reached the lower valley faster than the trunk Toce Glacier. This fact underlines the key role played by high‐elevation accumulation areas that are located close to the foreland in controlling the path and geometry of major glaciers in the Alps. The age and origin of the Grover Gravel, which is preserved on stable uplands in St. Louis County, Missouri, USA, and similar gravels along the Mississippi River bluffs farther south, have been controversial for over a century. These gravels have some features consistent with a glacial origin but lack obvious erratics such as igneous rock fragments. New observations, however, show that the earliest tills within the Mississippi basin nearly lack such constituents as well, and that the Grover Gravel is a Pleistocene deposit derived from such a till. A Mississippi River terrace deposit in St. Louis County also includes typical clasts of this till and formed between 2.0–1.8 Ma, based on various dating methods. This deposit may correspond to a pulse of glacial meltwater recorded within sediment near the mouth of the Mississippi River and represent outwash from a previously unrecognized glaciation within the US midcontinent. The Mounds Gravel (or Upland Complex) is present farther south around the perimeter of the Mississippi Embayment and contains the same distinct clasts as the gravels in St. Louis County. Given that the age of the Mounds is <~3 Ma based on cosmogenic‐nuclide ratios, the southern gravel could be the same age as the gravel terrace in St. Louis County. If so, these gravels could mark a geomorphic transition to glacial‐dominated sedimentation farther south in and around the Gulf of Mexico. Regardless, all the upland gravels have insignificant amounts of zircon from provinces west of Hudson Bay. Therefore, detrital zircon provenance does not support a recent hypothesis that the Mounds (Upland Complex) was deposited by a giant Mississippi River with a drainage basin extending across broad areas west of Hudson Bay. High‐resolution shallow sub‐bottom seismic survey data obtained for the Dudgeon windfarm site located 50 km offshore of the north Norfolk coast in the southern North Sea have revealed that the chalk bedrock in this area is overlain by sediments deposited during the Elsterian and Weichselian glacial periods. A buried N–S‐trending subglacial drainage channel (tunnel valley) filled with Swarte Bank Formation (MIS 12) sediments indicates that the maximum extent of the Elsterian ice‐sheet margin occurred further to the south. Detailed cross‐sections constructed from the seismic data reveal the presence of buried thrust‐block moraine system composed of deformed (folded and thrusted) Swarte Bank Formation sediments, lying beneath a younger sequence of sediments dominated by the glacigenic Bolders Bank Formation (MIS 2). The geometry of the folds and sense of offset on the thrusts, coupled with the morphology of the ridge‐like landforms within this buried moraine system, are consistent with deformation having occurred in response to ice‐push from the N/NE. The chalk bedrock that underlies the glaciotectonized sequence is thought to have provided an antecedent control on the location and preservation of this moraine system. A three‐phase model is proposed to explain the evolution of this thrust‐moraine complex that formed at the oscillating ice margin during the overall active retreat of the Elsterian ice sheet. Mongolian glaciers have been the subject of relatively little research, resulting in less geochronological constraint than other parts of Central Asia. The Khentey Mountains (latitude 47–51°N, longitude 105–112°E) are a typical landlocked mountain range exhibiting clear geomorphic evidence of late Quaternary glaciation. Yet, compared to western parts of Mongolia such as the Mongolian Altay, Gobi Altay, Khangay, and Khovsgol, glacial history of the Khentey Mountains is poorly understood. To address this, and permit comparison of the Khentey glacier–climate record with other alpine regions in Mongolia, we performed geomorphological mapping and cosmogenic 10Be surface‐exposure dating in two glaciated regions of the Khentey Mountains: Yestii and Khagiin Khar. Specifically, we measured 10Be in 34 samples collected from five moraine sequences, which, together with morphostratigraphy, correspond to four main glacial stages: (i) The My1 terminal moraine sequence for Yestii (21.0±4.9 ka) and the Mk1 moraine for Khagiin Khar (19.6±2.6 ka), both of which represent the Last Glacial Maximum; (ii) the Lateglacial Mk2 moraine, dated to 16.0±3.5 ka; (iii) the Mk3 moraine, dated to either 17.6±7.0 ka (Lateglacial) or 12.1±1.1 ka (Younger Dryas); and (iv) the currently undated Mk4 moraine (~2200 m a.s.l.), to which we assign a Holocene age. Our results suggest that the timing of maximum glacier extent in Mongolia was regionally variable. In the Khentey Mountains, maximum glaciation occurred during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 2, whereas the maximum occurred during MIS 3 in Khangay and Khovsgol and during MIS 4 in the Altay. The MIS 2 glacial maximum in the Khentey Mountains coincided with the global sea level minimum during the Last Glacial Maximum, and was followed by at least three glacial re‐advances during the Lateglacial to possibly the Holocene. Glacial geomorphology relating to the Loch Lomond Stadial (Younger Dryas) in Britain is used to construct five glacial landsystem models. These landsystems lie on a continuum of increasing ice thickness and decreasing topographic control and typify the principal styles of glaciation during the stadial. The landsystems comprise: the cirque/niche glacier landsystem, the alpine icefield landsystem, the lowland piedmont lobe landsystem, the plateau icefield landsystem and the icecap landsystem. Geomorphological features representing the icecap landsystem are present only at the centre of the West Highland Glacier Complex, which was flanked primarily by satellite alpine and plateau icefields. The cirque/niche glacier landsystem was present predominantly in areas that experienced conditions only marginally favourable for glacier development at peripheral sites. Three styles of glacier retreat are recorded by the geomorphology: active, two-phase and uninterrupted retreat. Of these, active retreat appears to be most widespread within the Loch Lomond Stadial limits. These retreat styles reflect a combination of climatic and topographic conditions, coupled with local factors influencing the preservation of landforms from which retreat dynamics can be inferred. Likewise, the distribution of landsystems was influenced by an interplay between topography and climate, with glacier formation being facilitated in locations where topographical conditions aided in the accumulation of snow. The Magdalen Islands (Québec, Canada) are a key location for unravelling the glacial and sea-level history of the Maritime Provinces of eastern Canada. Although many sedimentary sequences have been described in the literature, absolute ages are lacking, impeding an accurate interpretation of the deposits and the establishment of a precise chronological framework. This study provides a detailed description of 21 stratigraphical sequences located throughout the archipelago, as well as the first comprehensive luminescence chronology from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to c. 10 ka. In addition to the five samples collected for age control purposes, 34 luminescence samples were taken from 17 different sites in glacial, periglacial and coastal deposits. The stratigraphical and chronological data reveal that the islands were at the crossroads of two icecaps during the LGM; the southern islands were glaciated by the Escuminac icecap located in the western Gulf of St. Lawrence whereas the northern archipelago was glaciated at the end of the LGM by an ice flow from Newfoundland. The glacial deposit covering the northern Magdalen Islands was associated with the Newfoundland icecap; here it is named the Grande-Entrée till and is dated to c. 20 ka. OSL ages between c. 23 and 17 ka acquired from cryopediment and coastal deposits on the southern islands indicate that this part of the archipelago was deglaciated shortly after the LGM and was affected by a high sea level and periglacial processes. Around 15 ka, the entire archipelago was deglaciated and partially submerged until c. 10 ka. This data set is the first major contribution to a detailed chronology of the Magdalen Islands and constitutes the first step towards interpreting the glacial and sea-level history of the central area of the Gulf of St. Lawrence; this new understanding will provide input to regional marine and glacial modelling.
