At the Pingorsuit Glacier in North‐West Greenland, an organic‐rich deposit that had recently emerged from the retreating ice cap was discovered at an elevation of 480 m above sea level. This paper reports on macrofossil analyses of a coarse detritus gyttja and peaty soil, which occurred beneath a thin cover of till and glacifluvial deposits. The sediments contained remains of vascular plants, mosses, beetles, caddisflies, midges, bryozoans, sponges and other invertebrates. The flora includes black spruce, tree birch, boreal shrubs and wetland and aquatic taxa, which shows that mires, lakes and ponds were present in the area. We describe a new extinct waterwort species Elatine odgaardii. The fossils were deposited in a boreal environment with a mean July air temperature that was at least 9 °C higher than at present. The fossil assemblages show strong similarities with others from Greenland that have been assigned an Early Pleistocene age, and we suggest a similar age for the sediments found at the margin of the Pingorsuit Glacier. Brown bears are one of the few large carnivore species that survived the final Pleistocene wave of extinctions, perhaps in part owing to their wide ecological plasticity, variety of forms and polyphagia. Although the brown bear has become a well‐studied system, many questions remain regarding the ecological, trophic and genetic diversity throughout their distribution. For example, knowledge about Asiatic Russian brown bears from the Late Pleistocene arctic tundra steppe, an ecosystem with no analogue in modern times, is sparse. Here we compared diets, morphometry and genetic affinities of Late Pleistocene bears based on broadly sampled subfossil remains from Asiatic Russia. Collecting sites included the Ural Mountains, the lower reaches of the Irtysh River, the upper reaches of the Ob River, the Altai Mountains of western Siberia, the Indigirka–Kolyma Lowlands and northwestern Chukotka. An extremely large bear specimen from the middle Indigirka (41 090 14C a BP) that lived in landscapes of treeless shrubs and wet meadows had a diet composed principally of large herbivorous mammals. A bear from western Chukotka (25 880 14C a BP), much smaller in size, had a diet close to that of modern brown bears. These two Late Pleistocene NE Russian brown bears may comprise a previously undiscovered, but extinct, genetic lineage. At the end of the Pleistocene (MIS 3 and MIS 2), the brown bears from the Ob River Valley and Urals lived in periglacial forest‐steppes and those from the southern Urals in conditions of periglacial steppe. Brown bears from the Ob River valley and Urals, as well as ancient Altai bears, were characterized by a varied diet, from polyphagia to vegetarianism. In living brown bears, the proportions of different dietary foods are primarily related to food availability, which depends on the geographical zone and climatic conditions. Marine sediments occupy a significant portion of the Quaternary succession in the West Siberian Arctic but, until recently, their ages and distributions have been strongly debated. Based on new geological, palaeontological and geochronological data obtained within the last decade, we hereby postulate the following: (i) Two different Pleistocene interglacial marine formations are exposed across the West Siberian Arctic. The older Kheta marine formation, sandwiched between two Middle Pleistocene till beds, yields optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages of c. 200 ka (MIS 7). The younger Karginsky/Payuta marine formation, overlying the Middle Pleistocene Taz till, contains a boreal mollusc fauna and has an OSL age of c. 115 ka (MIS 5e). These Middle and Upper Pleistocene marine beds have been correlated across a vast region between the Ob' and Yenisey estuaries. (ii) The marine transgression during MIS 7 spread as far south into West Siberia as 65°N, almost 1000 km southwards from the present‐day Kara Sea shoreline. Meanwhile, the smaller marine transgression during MIS 5e reached as far south as 68°N. (iii) Both marine formations contain a boreal molluscan fauna, which is not found in the modern Kara Sea but is characteristic of the North Atlantic. We propose that warmer Atlantic waters penetrated much further eastwards during both MIS 7 and MIS 5e than at present. In this study, we analysed a ~54‐m sediment core consisting of Quaternary sediments overlying the Neoproterozoic Muhos Formation in central western Finland, adjacent to the Gulf of Bothnia. The sediments recovered were logged, and their sedimentological characteristics defined. Two fine‐grained sediment units were subjected to biostratigraphical studies using pollen and diatom analyses. In addition, two sand‐rich units and a wooden stick were dated by the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and 14C‐AMS methods. The core sediments were divided into six units, where several diamicton, sand and gravel, and silt‐and‐clay‐dominated beds were studied. The results indicate that the sediment succession of the core beneath the Holocene Litorina Sea and the Ancylus Lake sediments of the Baltic Basin were deposited in glacial and lacustrine environments that existed in the Oulu River valley during the time period between the Saalian glaciation (MIS 6) and the Holocene. The stratigraphical evidence, supported by the OSL ages, suggests that the Scandinavian Ice Sheet (SIS) entered the Muhos area during the Saalian glaciation, and at least during three separate time intervals in the Weichselian stage. Stratigraphically controlled and age‐bracketed evidence shows that the first Weichselian SIS advance extended further south in the eastern part of Fennoscandia than previously estimated, and that this ice growth phase occurred during the Early Weichselian Herning Stadial (MIS 5d). The subsequent ice growth phases occurred during the Middle (MIS 4) and Late (MIS 2) Weichselian substages. The lacustrine and littoral sediments of the Muhos core were correlated with the late Eemian interglacial (MIS 5e) and two Weichselian interstadials (MIS 5c and MIS 3). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brown bears (Ursusarctos) diverged from the cave bear lineage c. 1.2 million years ago and likely originated in Asia, where the oldest fossils belong to a Middle Pleistocene chronology. Brown bear fossils from the Middle Pleistocene are scarce in the Iberian Peninsula, especially when compared to the cave bear record and they are mainly located in the southern half of the peninsula. The oldest evidence in the Iberian Peninsula is from c. 250 ka, which is 300 ka younger than the oldest European records (~550 ka; L'Arago). Here we present the brown bear fossil assemblage from Postes cave (Fuentes de León, Extremadura, southern Iberian Peninsula). Postes cave has yielded some of the oldest evidence for brown bears in Iberia with a minimum date of 244 191±2261 a BP (number of identified specimens (NISP) = 4). Additionally, the uppermost part of the Pleistocene deposit has yielded one of the largest Middle Pleistocene brown bear collections in the Iberian Peninsula (NISP = 73) with a chronology roughly between 193 and 244 ka BP, comprising both cranial and postcranial remains and including a complete hemimandible. The Postes mandible fits well within the Middle Pleistocene brown bear range of variation, as it is significantly different in size and shape from the Holocene brown bears, based on geometric morphometric analyses. We show that these differences are due to allometry. This site provides more insight into the Middle Pleistocene morphological variation of brown bears in western Europe and underscores the need for additional Middle Pleistocene fossils in the northern half of Iberia to further test palaeobiogeographical hypotheses of this species' entrance into the largest of the southern European peninsulas. The study of palaeo‐glacial landforms and sediments can give insights into the nature and dynamics of ice sheets. This is particularly the case with regards to the subglacial record, which is challenging to observe in contemporary glaciated settings and hence remains only partially understood. The subglacial hydrological system is an essential component of ice dynamics, where increased water pressure enhances ice motion and sediment deformation, thus reducing ice‐bed contact. Tunnel valleys are large, sinuous, steep‐sided incisions that, together with smaller scale meltwater channels, indicate subglacial meltwater discharge beneath large ice sheets. Through the use of high‐resolution marine geophysical data, a system of buried and exposed tunnel valleys, possible subglacial or proglacial meltwater channels and palaeo‐fluvial valleys have been identified across the shelf of the Celtic Sea between Ireland and Britain. The presence of steep‐sided and overdeepened tunnel valleys is indicative of a large channelized meltwater drainage system beneath the former Irish Sea Ice Stream, the most extensive ice stream to drain the last British–Irish Ice Sheet. After the rapid ice expansion across the Celtic Sea shelf around 28–26 ka, the tunnel valleys were carved into both bedrock and glacigenic sediments and are associated with rapid ice stream retreat northwards into the Irish Sea Basin between 25.6 and 24.3 ka. The presence of a major subglacial meltwater system on the relatively shallow shelf suggests that significant erosive meltwater discharge occurred during the last deglaciation and highlights the important contribution of meltwater to the retreat of the British–Irish Ice Sheet on the continental shelf.
