- Abstract
Introduction: The urachus is a fibrous remnant of the sinus and urogenital allantois, a tubular epithelial structure located in the midline that connects the anterosuperior part of the urinary bladder with the navel during embryogenesis. Alterations resulting from the incomplete regression of this allantoid remnant include four different types of remnants depending on the persistent segment of the urachus. An uracal cyst is a persistent section in the middle portion of the urachus filled with fluid derived from the epithelial lining. Objective: To know the incidence, diagnosis and treatment of urachal cysts. Case report: A 42-year-old male patient presented to the clinic for a condition of seven months of evolution characterized by intermittent infraumbilical abdominal pain. Extension studies demonstrated the presence of a cystic-appearing tumor between the anterior bladder wall and the umbilical scar, and underwent surgery with ureter cyst excision and partial cystectomy, finding a cystic remnant with dimensions of approximately 12 X 5.0 cm. Conclusions: The congenital pathology of the urachus requires a good anatomical and embryological understanding for its adequate diagnosis and management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
