Alistair Cameron MacDonald (“Sandy”) was born in Elgin, Morayshire, where his father was a general practitioner. His earliest memories were of exploring the garden of the TB sanatorium and of playing at being a doctor at home: “I’d borrow my Dad’s trilby hat and a small version of his doctor’s bag, and I’d get on my tricycle and go and visit my patients in the garden. My patients were mostly the hens at the bottom of the garden—many of them survived.” Educated at Elgin Academy, during the summer holidays Sandy attended camps run by the Scripture Union. At Aberdeen University, for which he boxed and swam, he joined the Evangelical Union and during his houseman’s year was recruited as a missionary by the Church of Scotland. …
