Russell Frederick Graham (“Freddie”) was born in Liverpool. The third of four siblings, he attended Booker Avenue Primary School as a child, followed by the renowned Liverpool Institute for Boys. A bright and studious teenager, Russell won a scholarship to study French and Spanish at Oxford University but, during the summer after his A levels, decided to instead pursue a career in medicine. He went personally to see the dean of Liverpool University Medical School, who agreed to allow him entry on the understanding that he would spend his first year catching up on the science he had missed while studying languages.
