Background: Current studies in most Western countries have largely focused on body mass index (BMI) as an important risk factor for impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and impaired fasting glucose (IFG), which have different pathophysiological bases. In people with obesity, the prevalence of IGT is higher and the prevalence of IFG is lower. The prevalence of IGT in the Asian population is higher than that in the white population, and the obesity rate in China is still increasing. However, few cohort studies explore the relationship between BMI and the incidence of IGT and IFG in China. We aimed to explore the relationship between BMI and the risk of IGT and IFG in Chinese adults and analyze the differences between them. Methods: The baseline data were obtained from the 2010 China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance, of which 20 surveillance sites were followed up from 2016 to 2017. Finally, in this study, a total of 5,578 studies were grouped into BMI categories of underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (18.5–23.9 kg/m2), overweight (24.0–27.9 kg/m2), and obesity (≥ 28.0 kg/m2). We used the unconditional logistic regression model to analyze the relationship between BMI and the risk of IGT and IFG. Results: During an average follow-up of 6.4 years, 562 developed IGT and 257 developed IFG. After age, gender, urban and rural areas, physical activity, family history of diabetes, hypertension, abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, and other factors were adjusted, overweight increased the risk of IGT by 35% [odds ratio (OR) 1.35, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.08–1.70], and obesity increased the risk of IGT by 77% (OR 1.77, 95% CI 1.27–1.47). After the factors consistent with the above were adjusted, only obesity increased the risk of IFG by 122% (OR 2.22, 95% CI 1.39–3.54). Conclusions: In China, obesity is an important risk factor for IGT and IFG, and the risk of IGT increases during the overweight stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Resection of colorectal adenoma (CRA) prevents colorectal cancer; however, recurrence is common. We aimed to assess the association of the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index with CRA occurrence and recurrence., Methods: Data from 3392 participants at a hospital in China from 2020 to 2022 were analyzed. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A restricted cubic spline was used to fit TyG index dose‒response curves to recurrent adenomas. The discriminatory power of TyG index for predicting later recurrence was assessed with the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve in 170 patients with a TyG index at initial adenoma diagnosis., Results: One thousand five hundred ninety-six adenoma and 1465 normal participants were included in the occurrence analysis, and 179 recurrent and 152 nonrecurrent participants were included in the recurrence analysis. The TyG mutation was an independent risk factor for CRA occurrence and recurrence. After adjusting for confounders, the risk of adenoma in the participants in Q2, Q3, and Q4 groups of TyG was 1.324 (95% CI 1.020-1.718), 1.349 (95% CI 1.030-1.765), and 1.445 (95% CI 1.055-1.980) times higher than that of the Q1, respectively, and the risk of recurrence in the Q3 and Q4 groups was 2.267 (95% CI 1.096-4.691) and 2.824 (95% CI 1.199-6.648) times in Q1 group. Multiple logistic regression showed that the highest quartile of the TyG index was associated with a greater risk of advanced adenoma recurrence (OR 4.456, 95% CI 1.157-17.164), two or more adenomas (OR 5.079, 95% CI 1.136-22.714 [after removal of TyG index extreme values]), and proximal colon or both adenomas (OR 3.043, 95% CI 1.186-7.810). Subgroup analysis revealed that the association was found to be present only in participants of all age groups who were either male or without obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertension, or dyslipidemia (p < 0.05). ROC curves illustrated that the TyG index had good predictive efficacy for identifying recurrence, especially for patients with two or more adenomas (AUC 0.777, 95% CI 0.648-0.907)., Conclusions: An increase in the TyG index is associated with an increased risk of adenoma occurrence and recurrence, with a stronger association with the latter., (© 2024. Background: Few nationally representative surveys regarding body composition and metabolic syndrome (MetS) have been done in a large-scale representative Chinese population to explore the prediction of body composition indicators for MetS. The objective of this study was to examine the relation of body composition and MetS and to determine the optimal cut-off values of body composition indicators that predict MetS in a large representative Chinese sample based on multiple provinces and ethnicities, covering a broad age range from 10 to 80 years old.Methods: The subjects came from a large-scale population survey on Chinese physiological constants and health conditions conducted in six provinces. 32,036 subjects completed all blood biochemical testing and body composition measure. Subjects meeting at least 3 of the following 5 criteria qualify as having MetS: elevated blood pressure, lower high density lipoprotein cholesterol level, higher triglyceride level, higher fasting glucose level and abdominal obesity.Results: The total prevalence rate of MetS for males (9.29%) was lower than for females (11.58%). The prevalence rates were 12.03% for male adults and 15.57% for female adults respectively. The risk of MetS increased 44.6% (OR = 1.446, 95%CI: 1.414-1.521) for males and 53.4% (OR = 1.534, 95%CI: 1.472-1.598) for females with each 5% increase of percentage of body fat. The risk of MetS increased two-fold (OR = 2.020, 95%CI: 1.920-2.125 for males; OR = 2.047, 95%CI: 1.954-2.144 for females respectively) with each 5% increase of waist-hip ratio. The risk of MetS increased three-fold (OR = 2.915, 95%CI: 2.742-3.099 for males; OR = 2.950, 95%CI: 2.784-3.127 for females respectively) with each 5% increase of Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR). Areas under the receiver operating curve (AUC) of most body composition indicators were larger than 0.70 and the sensitivities and the specificities of most cut-off values were larger than 0.65. AUCs of WHR and WHtR were the largest. The optimal cut-off values of WHtR were 0.51 for males and 0.53 for females.Conclusion: MetS has become a serious public health challenge in China. Body composition variables were closely related to MetS and they were reliable indicators in the screening of the presence of MetS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
