The article describes at-will employment, a legal standard in the U.S. that allows companies to fire people for any reason-and sometimes, for no reason at all. This leaves employees vulnerable to being fired for trying to unionize, because of race, gender, pregnancy, age or religion. The only Americans with a higher standard of protection are those in the C-suite, the public sector, unionized workplaces, and Montana. New laws that will take effect on July 5, 2021 in New York State, banning at-will employment at fast-food businesses, are also discussed.
