The article discusses a study which examines the effect of edible rhizome of Nelumbo nucifera on the protection against hepatic injury from non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in obese diabetic mice. The presence of polyphenolic compounds proanthocyanidins in lotus roots along with its health promoting properties is also described. The suppression of lipogenic enzyme, inflammatory genes and elevation of adiponectin serum level which has protective effect against NAFLD is reported.

The article discusses a study which aims to breed a low pyruvate-producing sake yeast through an isolation of a mutant resistant to ethyl α-transcyanocinnamate. It indicates that the approach is effective in breeding a low pyruvate-producing sake yeast. It also reveals that the characteristics of mutants resistant to ethyl α-transcyanocinnamate involved changes in mitochondrial function.

The article discusses the results of a study which investigated the isolation of porphyran-degrading marine microorganisms from the surface of thalli of Porphyra yezoensis. 15 crude microorganism groups were found to soften and liquefy the surface of agar-rich plate medium. 11 microorganism groups were found to degrade porphyran that consisted of sulfated polysaccharide in the red algae.
