The “Felina 32” variety of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is among the most popular cultivated varieties in Lithuania. In 2020 to 2021, the height of the above-ground portion of “Felina 32” ranged from about 1.37 to 2.52 m. In the less favorable year of 2021, 9.8% lower height and 28.5% lower mass plants grew. However, the impact of meteorological conditions on their comparative indicators was not confirmed. Two critical intervals were distinguished, which essentially influence the dynamics of plant growth: crop density of 90 to 150 plants∙m2 and plant height of 1.9 m to 1.99 m. Lower crop density results in larger plants, and plants taller than 1.9 m gain mass 2.58 times faster than shorter plants. In addition, industrial hemp of different heights is characterized by differences in the development of morphological parts. This directly affects the physical and chemical properties of biomass. It was determined that when the height of “Felina 32” variety changes, the heat value of biomass increases 0.342 MJ/kg, carbon concentration increases 0.70%, and ash content, sulfur, nitrogen, and chlorine concentrations decreased.

The excellent physical and chemical properties of deep eutectic solvents, especially the ability of some of them to dissolve biomass, make them broadly applicable in biomass pretreatment. In this study, oat straw was pretreated with deep eutectic solvents composed of choline chloride and an acid (formic, lactic, or oxalic acid). The highest reducing sugar yield was obtained for the formic acid/choline chloride mixture. Using a pretreatment temperature of 110 °C, a reaction time of 2 h, and a solid-liquid ratio of 1:20, the reducing sugar yield obtained by cellulase hydrolysis was 23.5%, the degradation rate of cellulose reached 76.9%, and hemicellulose was completely degraded. The pretreated oat straw was then analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The changes in its crystallinity and lignin content compared to the untreated specimen were determined. A preliminary mechanism for the pretreatment of oat straw with formic acid/choline chloride was revealed. Fruit of the Crataegus species (Rosaceae), known as the "Hawthorn" wild plant, has important benefits for human health. The purpose of this study was to determine the chemical properties of one of the local endemic taxa, Crataegus monogyna var. odemisii in west Turkey. Based on the chemical analysis results, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of fruit extracts, the fruit lipid contents, total phenol, and total flavonoid contents were studied. Five different methods were used to measure antioxidant capacity, namely the CUPRAC, ß-Carotene-linoleic acid, DPPH•, ABTS•+, and CUPRAC analyses were used for the measurement of antioxidant capacity. The results showed that the highest antimicrobial activity was against C. albicans, and it was more effective against Gr+ bacteria than Gr-bacteria. The qualitative, as well as quantitative, analyses of lipid contents of the fruits of C. monogyna var. odemisii were made by gas chromatographic analysis. Folin-Ciocalteu reagent was used for determining the total phenolic content, and aluminum chloride was used for determining the flavonoid content. Results revealed that there was a statistically significant relationship between the antioxidant activities and the phenolic and flavonoid contents in the extracts of Hawthorn fruits. The global trade of bamboo products is worth billions of dollars and is mainly dominant with monopodial bamboo grown in sub-tropic countries such as China and Japan. Many researchers globally discuss that in addition to species and region, bamboo quality can differ based on its rhizome types because the physiology is different for both monopodial and sympodial bamboo. However, there is a massive competition within the yearly forest products due to the challenges posed by underground root system in agroforestry. This review studied the properties of bamboo with regards to their differences in terms of monopodial and sympodial types of rhizomes. It was found that most of the structural, chemical organic, and mechanical properties are higher in monopodial bamboo, but there is a greater fibre morphology and decay resistance in the sympodial bamboo.

Literature is limited regarding the potential use of the bark of Maclura pomifera as a source of bioactive compounds. The influence of different extraction methods was assessed for the chemical and biological properties of extracts obtained from the bark and periderm of M. pomifera. The extraction process was completed using three methods: microwaveassisted extraction (MAE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), and sonicator-assisted extraction (SAE). The extracts were characterized by total polyphenol content. The antioxidant capacity was evaluated using DPPH and ABTS methods, the antimicrobial effect was tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains, and the inhibition of enzyme activity was conducted using α-glucosidase, lipase, and α- amylase assays. The extracts obtained from the periderm exhibited a lower total polyphenolic content compared to those obtained from the bark. The highest antioxidant activity using the DPPH method was observed in the MAE bark extracts and when using the ABTS method, and the highest activity was observed in the UAE bark extracts. Enzymatic activity was most strongly inhibited by the SAE bark extract. The most pronounced antibacterial potential was observed in the MAE and UAE bark extracts, with minimum inhibitory concentration values obtained below 1 mg/mL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accelerated weathering experiments were used to examine the durability and changes in various attributes of WPCs manufactured with the same wood powder size but varying polypropylene-to-wood ratios. Results from the accelerated weathering test revealed color changes, and each attribute generally declined with longer weathering times. In terms of mechanical qualities, the preservation of strength and stiffness increased with increasing plastic content. More wood flour led to higher moisture uptake in frequent humidity fluctuations and high temperatures. It also caused swelling as wells as subsequent cracks. Such surface damage could result in faster weathering and worse mechanical qualities. Effects of two different modified treatments were investigated relative to the chemical and mechanical properties of pretreated corn stalk particles and their composites prepared with a modified lignosulfonate (ML) binder. Corn stalk particles (CP) first were prepared by treating corn stalk particles with oxalic acid in ultrasonic conditions (pretreated corn stalk particles, PCP). These particles were then modified by treatment with either laccase-vanillin system with ultrasound (LU) or polyethylenimineglutaraldehyde with ultrasound (PU), and the surface chemistries of the modified PCP and mechanical properties of LU-PCP/ML composites and PU-PCP/ML composites, such as modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), internal bonding strength (IB), 24-h thickness swelling (TS), and crystallinity were compared. Both modified treatments dramatically enhanced the mechanical properties of the composites. The MOR, MOE, and IB of the PU-PCP/ML composites were improved by up to 148%, 81%, and 62%, respectively, compared to LU-PCP/ML. Moreover, the 24-h TS of the LU-PCP/ML composites was reduced by 16%. These results show that the pretreatment method of CP and ultrasonic collaborative treatment of PCP can effectively improve the properties of its composites. Effects of thermal modification were determined relative to chemical parameters of Pinus roxburghii. Thermal modification of wood was carried out at 80, 120, 160, and 200 °C for 2, 4, and 6 h. The chemical properties were different for different temperatures and different heating time. All parameters were similar except for cold water soluble extractives. Among the chemical properties studied, the maximum mean value of cold water extractives (8.20%), hot water soluble extractives (12.7%), holocellulose content (71.8%), and ash content (1.46%) were recorded at 120 °C, whereas the maximum mean values of alcohol benzene soluble extractives (13.9%) and lignin content (33.7%) were observed at 200 °C. The minimum mean value of cold water soluble extractives (5.82%), hot water soluble extractives (9.27%), holocellulose content (65.8%), and ash content (1.03%) were found to be at 200 °C, while the highest value of alcohol benzene soluble extractives 12.2% (control) and lignin content (28.0%) were found to be at 80 °C. Bacterial cellulose has superior physical and chemical properties, biocompatibility, and purity. However, the high production cost obstructs the common use of this polymer. This study investigated the efficiency of olive pomace, an important by-product of olive oil industry in Turkey, as a carbon source for Novacetimonas hansenii. Olive pomace pretreatment with 1% H3PO4 was followed by enzymatic hydrolysis. The maximal reducing sugar concentration upon enzymatic process was 9.3 g/L with 1 enzyme: 6 substrate (dry matter) ratio. After incubation in the growth media prepared with the obtained reducing sugar as carbon source, the highest bacterial cellulose production was 0.68 g/L. Structural analysis indicated that bacterial cellulose from the enzymatic media and the conventional Hestrin-Schramm medium possess similar characteristics. Highly efficient and environmentally friendly carboxylated cellulose silica hybrid adsorbents were prepared by combining the advantages of cellulose and silica. The surface property and chemical composition of produced cellulose silica hybrid adsorbents were extensively characterized via different techniques. The results indicated that silica particles were densely deposited on the surface of composite adsorbents. Because of their porous structure and large specific surface area, the carboxylated cellulose silica hybrid adsorbents demonstrated a high capacity of methylene blue (MB) adsorption, exceeding 990 mg·g-1. This adsorption capacity was more than 45% higher than that of carboxylated cellulose adsorbent. The cellulose silica hybrid adsorbents were able to maintain an MB adsorption efficiency of up to 70% even after undergoing five cycles. This study developed cellulose silica hybrid adsorbents for wastewater treatments. Glycol lignins (GLs) produced through acid-catalyzed solvolysis of softwood meal using glycols, such as polyethylene glycol (PEG), have been used for the development of functional materials. In this study, GLs with various physical and chemical properties were synthesized via solvolysis with monomethyl ethers of polyethylene glycol (MPEG), such as MPEG-n4 and MPEG-n8. The effects of the reaction time and temperature on the yield, molecular weight, and thermal properties of MPEG-lignin were studied. The yield of MPEG-lignin increased with the solvolysis time. Acid-catalyzed solvolysis using MPEG-n4 occurred faster than that using MPEG-n8. Higher reaction temperature resulted in a higher yield of MPEG-lignin with a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) and viscous thermal flow temperature (Tf). The Tg and Tf of MPEG-lignins increased with the solvolysis time. The MPEG-lignins synthesized at higher reaction temperatures showed a relatively strong carbonyl absorbance band in the infrared spectra, which was ascribed to decomposed sugar derivatives. To investigate the change of the service performance of wood-plastic composites degraded by sea water and acid rain, three types of woodplastic composite materials were prepared with sorghum straw reinforced with high-density polyethylene (SS/HDPE), polypropylene (SS/PP), and polyvinyl chloride (SS/PVC). Under the extreme alternate degradation conditions simulated by seawater (salinity 3.5%, temperature 55 °C) and acid rain (pH 2.5, temperature 55 °C), the effects on the mechanical and wear properties and the chemical structures of the composites were determined. The exposure to the alternate sea water and acid rain deteriorated the fiber/matrix bonding quality of the composites; the mechanical and wear properties decreased accordingly. Before and after degradation, the three composites were sorted in descending order of the mechanical and wear properties as follows: SS/PVC composites > SS/PP composites > SS/HDPE composites. Sorghum straw /PVC had the best resistance to degradation and sorghum straw /HDPE composite had the least resistance. Extraction of oil from walnut kernel as raw material was explored using the method of pressing. Soxhlet and ultrasonic-assisted extractions of walnut oil, its evaluation index, the extraction process optimization by single factor experiment, the physical and chemical properties of oil, fatty acid composition, element composition, and the main functional group analysis were studied. The results showed that walnut kernel could be extracted effectively with petroleum ether. The optimal extraction conditions of walnut oil by ultrasonic assisted extraction were as follows: solid/liquid ratio of 1:11 (g/mL), ultrasonic power 180 W, extraction time 60 min, and the extraction efficiency of walnut oil was 59.13%. The optimal extraction conditions of walnut oil by Soxhlet were solid to liquid ratio of 1:7, temperature of 76 °C, time of 4 h, and the extraction efficiency of walnut oil was 58.3%. The extraction efficiency of pressing was 43.2%. Walnut oil mainly contains phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and other elements. The fatty acids of walnut oil mainly consist of palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, cis-linoleic acid, cis, cis, cis-9,12,15-octadecanotrienoic acid and other fatty acids. The effects of different UV absorbents and preservatives on the weatherability of modified waterborne polyurethane (WPU) printed laminated bamboo were investigated. Three types of UV absorbents including 2-hydroxy-4-n-octoxy-benzophenone (UV-531), 2-(2 Hbenzotriazol-2-yl)-4-(1,1,3,3 tetramethylbutyl) phenol (UV-329), and nanoTiO2, and four types of preservatives including boric acid (BA), borax (BX), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT) were selected to modify WPU coatings. The printed laminated bamboo was tested to evaluate the coating physical and chemical properties and dimensional stability. Thirteen coating types were tested. The results showed that the 0 (20% WPU), 5 (UV-531-BA/BX), 6 (UV-531- BA/BX/APP), 7 (UV-531-BA/BX/DOT), 8 (UV-531-BA/BX/APP/DOT), and 9 (nano-TiO2/BA/BX) samples performed well in adhesion, abrasion resistance, hardness, and temperature denaturation. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra analyses and dimensional stability analysis were carried out on the six kinds of coatings screened out. FT-IR spectra analyses showed the successful introduction of UV light absorbers and flame retardants, whereas test results of hygroscopicity showed that the coated test material improved the dimensional stability performance. Pleioblastus chino var. hisauchii is an important ornamental bamboo species that rarely flowers. Studies on the change in its material properties before and after flowering were lacking. In this paper, the anatomical, chemical, and mechanical properties of bamboo culms before and after flowering were studied by using the method of bio-wood science. The results showed that after flowering, the morphology and proportion of the fiber, vessel and vascular bundle decreased, and the openings of pits in the vessel wall were enlarged significantly; the contents of the main components such as extractives, lignin, holocellulose, cellulose and pentosan rose, while the ash content dropped. There was a decrease in density and modulus of rupture, and a pronounced fall in modulus of elasticity, while the microfibril angle and crystallinity increased. In general, the strength of bamboo flowering culms decreased and the ability to transport nutrients increased, which were closely related to the changes in internal structure and properties. This meant that bamboo flowering may be monitored or predicted by significant changes in some properties (such as pits and modulus of elasticity) and provide a reference for further research on the mechanism of flowering senescence and delayed flowering in bamboo. Many thermal and chemical treatments are known to inhibit wood decay despite the wood grade processed, but their impact, e.g., chemicals’ leaching and decay resistance, may not be similar. The aim of this study was to test whether some model treatments retain their performance in different wood species. Additionally, the effects of thermal modification and linseed oil-based varnish treatments as means to mitigate water-soluble chemicals leaching were assessed. The mass loss caused by Trametes versicolor was measured after a 12-week exposure to analyze whether the different treatment approaches prevented the fungal decay after a standard leaching test. The mechanical properties before and after exposure were tested independently to determine whether the mechanical properties of different wood species were affected by the tested treatments and wood decay. The responses of the tested wood species were found to vary by treatments, but thermal and chemical fixation methods for water-soluble tannins were beneficial in all cases considering the mass loss and the degradation of modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity of treated wood. The chemical and physical properties of steam-exploded pine chips were analyzed by varying the temperature (190 °C to 230 °C) and time (1.5 min to 20.0 min) of steam explosion at the same severity factor (Ro), i.e., 4.0. Then, their potential as a dietary fiber source was evaluated. Overall, the chemical properties, e.g., solid recovery, cellulose, hemicellulose, and total dietary fiber content, showed a tendency to decrease as the temperature increased as well as an increasing lignin content. The physical properties, e.g., water-holding capacity, oil-holding capacity, and swelling capacity, showed decreased values in pine chips subjected to steam explosion at a temperature of 210 °C or greater. The chemical and physical properties of the steam-exploded pine chips, which were subjected to steam explosion at different temperatures and times at the selected Ro) considerably changed, starting at a temperature of 200 °C for 11.5 min. Even with the same severity factor, the steam-exploded pine chips at a temperature of 200 °C for 11.5 min showed the greatest improvement in the physical properties, i.e., water holding capacity (8.3 g/g), oil holding capacity (6.8 g/g), and swelling capacity (4.9 mL/g). Wild pear plant species Pyrus spinosa Forsk., naturally grown in woodlands in Turkey, are one of the most important wild fruits consumed by local people as food, as well as used for medical purposes. In this study, some chemical properties were determined such as fruit seed and fruit pulp antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, fruit seed fatty acid components of Pyrus spinosa determined, which grow naturally in Ödemiş, İzmir, in the south of Turkey. The qualitative and quantitative analyses of fatty acid components of fruit seed of P. spinosa were determined by GC/MS analysis. A total of 16 fatty acids in the fruit seed were found in the analysis results and 44.8% linoleic acid (C18:2n6c), 40.5% oleic acid (C18:1n9c), and 7.6% palmitic acid (C16:0) components were found in higher proportions. Free radical removal effects of fruit seed and fruit pulp extracts were determined using the DPPH method. The antimicrobial activity of fruit pulp extract of P. spinosa was determined by the disk diffusion method against E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans. This study revealed that the fruit pulp and fruit seed of P. spinosa, which had a significant level of antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity, and fruit seed had high levels fatty acids components. Castanopsis fargesii is among the most prevalent hardwood species in South China. To improve the poor dimensional stability of C. fargesii wood, heat treatments were performed using vacuum or sand as the medium at four temperatures from 170 °C to 215 °C for 4 h. As a medium, vacuum or sand can create a low oxygen environment. The results showed that, as the temperature increased, the oven-dry density decreased, whereas the dimensional stability and the total color change (ΔE*) increased with both media, two different changing patterns of a* and b* were observed, the lignin content increased, and the holocellulose content decreased. The oven-dry density decreased 9.4% and 25.5%, volume shrinkage ratio decreased 27.8% and 37.7%, and the ΔE* was 19.63 and 45.52, the lignin contents increased from 17.62% to 28.62% and 42.87%, and the holocellulose contents decreased from 80.49% to 69.43% and 51.04% when C. fargesii wood was heated under vacuum and with sand at 215 °C, respectively. Overall, sand heat treatment affected wood physical and chemical properties more than vacuum heat treatment. The thermogravimetric properties and chemical characterization of rice straw (RS) pretreated by mixed culture of white-rot fungi Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P. chrysosporium) and brown-rot fungi Gloeophyllum trabeum (G. trabeum) were investigated. The mixed fungal pretreatment showed a synergistic effect, which resulted in an energy-efficient pyrolysis of pretreated rice straw. The differences in thermochemical conversion of rice straw before and after fungal pretreatment were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis and the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) method. Furthermore, the pretreated samples were also analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to illuminate the changes in chemical composition and pyrolysis behavior. The bark of Pteroceltis tatarinowii is one of the main raw materials for the manufacturing of Xuan paper. In order to guide the production of Xuan paper, the anatomical properties and chemical compositions of the bark and branch wood from P. tatarinowii at different years of age were analyzed in this study. The results from a variation analysis of the anatomical properties indicated that the ratio of the length to width of the bark and branch wood was greater than 30, while the ratio of the lumen diameter to the wall thickness was less than 1. Furthermore, there were significant differences in the length and the ratio of length to width of the bark and branch wood. The results from a variation analysis of the chemical composition indicated that the lignin content of branch wood at various ages (years) was greater than the lignin content of bark. Additionally, the cellulose extractive and pentosan contents of the branch wood was less than the contents in the bark. Based on the analysis of the anatomical and chemical composition, barks that were 2 to 3 years old were the most suitable raw materials for the manufacturing of Xuan paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Siamese people utilized the bark of the Coi tree (Streblus asper Lour.) to manufacture paper approximately 330 years ago. However, there are no studies yet related to the chemical properties of Coi bark as well as the morphological properties of Coi bark fiber and Coi pulp fiber. This research paper discussed such properties of Coi bark. The results indicated that Coi bark possessed a chemical composition that could potentially be used for pulp production, although it contained a high value of ash content, due to many calcium particles in the bark. Even though Coi pulp fibers were very long and stiff, with small lumens and thick cell walls, they could be felted naturally on a washing screen to make a strong wet sheet. This was due to a high felting power of fibers derived from a high value of fiber length and slenderness ratio. Therefore, the handsheets produced from Coi pulp fiber were obtained without chemical and beating treatments. These observations mean that both the archaeological and industrial applications of Coi bark, i.e., an ancient Samud Coi preservation and a new potential source of pulp fiber, are possible. The effects of using blends of unleaded gasoline and refined fusel oil on engine performance and exhaust emissions were analyzed. Prior to the experiment, the fusel oil, which is the final waste product of the sugar factory, was developed to have the chemical properties that can be used in internal combustion engines by removing water and gum contained therein. A four-stroke, single-cylinder, spark-ignition engine was used for the experiments. The tests were conducted at a fixed speed and under different loads. The test fuels were blended with fusel oil contents of 5%, 15%, and 30%. Under each load, the engine's performance and emissions were measured. Throughout the experiments, it was observed that engine torque and fuel consumption increased as the amount of fusel oil in the blend increased. Nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were reduced as the amount of fusel oil in the blends increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forest residues are a potentially important source of renewable energy. They are generated as a byproduct of timber harvesting around the world. To optimize the utilization of such biomass, one must know its physical and chemical properties. This paper presents an analysis of comminuted forest residues from Pinus sylvestris L. They were classified into four size fractions for which three density parameters were established pursuant to relevant standards. The mean bulk density of the fractions amounted to 110 to 190 kg/m3, apparent density 725 to 908 kg/m3, and specific density 1111 to 1350 kg/m3. The findings were compared to the results of previous research on other forms of forest biomass. The measured apparent-tospecific density conversion coefficient was ß = 0.64. The elementary composition of forest residues measured in this work differed from that of other biomass types described in literature. In terms of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and ash content, statistical analysis showed that the two compared types of biomass (forest residues and energy wood chips) formed two separate homogeneous groups, while both of these materials constituted one homogeneous group in the case of hydrogen content. Dendrocalamus brandisii is an edible bamboo species found in Southwest China and South Asia. However, there is limited information about the anatomical and chemical information of its culms for its utilization and processing. In this paper, the anatomical and chemical properties of different age culms were determined. There are three vascular bundle types found in its culms. The radial length-to-tangential diameter ratio of vascular bundles varied with culm zone but did not vary with age. The outer diameter of metaxylem vessels showed a similar trend. The fiber length (L), wall thickness (W), and Runkel ratio increased with age, while the fiber length-to-outer diameter ratio (L/D) and lumen diameter (Ld) decreased with age. The chemical properties of D. brandisii also differed with age class and height. The holocellulose and ash content decreased from age 1 to 2 years and then increased at year 3. The acid-insoluble lignin, alcohol-toluene extractives, and silica contents increased with age class, whereas the acid-soluble lignin exhibited the opposite trend. The fiber length and L/D values of D. brandisii suggest it would be suitable material for pulp fibers, but its lignin content was relatively high compared with other bamboo species.

This study explored the chemical properties of heat-treated bamboo. Oriented bamboo fiber mats (OBFMs) of Phyllostachys iridescens bamboo, as units of a bamboo fiber-reinforced composite (BFRC), were heat-treated in saturated steam at 0.40 MPa (150 °C) for 110, 140, or 170 min. After heat treatment, the color of oriented bamboo fiber mats changed noticeably. The chemical properties of the bamboo were examined. The results revealed that the contents of holocellulose and hemicelluloses decreased, while the contents of α-cellulose and water extractives and buffering capacity increased. The pH value decreased compared with control samples. The change in the chemical properties of the OBFMs would have an effect on the properties of the BFRC.

The chemical properties and fiber morphology of Fargesia fungosa at different culm ages and height portions were investigated. The variations in moisture, ash, SiO2, and toluene–alcohol extractive contents with culm ages were greater than they were with heights. The holocellulose varied neither significantly with age nor with height. The fiber length, width, length-to-width ratio, and wall thickness of F. fungosa increased with culm ages. Meanwhile, the middle portions of culms at all age classes had the highest values of fiber length and width. The lumen diameter decreased, whereas the wall-lumen ratio increased, with increasing bamboo ages and heights. The 3-year-old culms of F. fungosa are suitable for pulp and papermaking based on their fine chemical properties and fiber morphology.

The results indicate that the rind region that is split and used in mat making contains compactly arranged fibrovascular bundles and a discontinuous patch of fibrous sheath. The frequency and the R/T ratio of the bundles were high in the rind region and were indicative of fibre strength. Lignin and cellulose, the major cell wall substances, were localized with heterochromatic, fluorescent, and natural dyes. The holocellulose content was high (82.2 %), and the lignin content was comparatively low (13.28 %) as analyzed by the method of Doree. Very thick walled, thick walled, very thin walled, and thin walled fibres were characterized when fibres were macerated, and their derived values indicated a high Slenderness and Runkell ratio that is indicative of tear resistance. The tenacity and percentage elongation of the split culm strands was also high, and this implies high strength of the fibre strands. The fibre of this mat sedge thus has favorable characteristics to be potentially utilized in the mat and silkmat industry. Furthermore the plant’s annual harvesting period, biomass, and appropriate fibre characteristics makes this sedge very attractive as an alternative fibre source in the miscellaneous plant fibre industry.

Wood specimens were treated with heat under atmospheric pressure at three different temperatures (130, 180, and 230 oC) and two different time levels (2 and 8 h). Air-dry density (Dm), oven-dry density (D0), shrinkage (β), swelling (α), fiber saturation point (FSP), compression strength parallel to grain (σc//), bending strength (σb), modulus of elasticity (MOE) in bending, equilibrium moisture content (EMC), holocellulose, and alcohol solubility were decreased, whereas 1% NaOH solubility and lignin content were increased, depending on the heating temperature and time. Cellulose crystallinity of the samples was not changed significantly. 130 oC showed a minimal effect; on the other hand, 230 oC showed a maximum effect on all properties of the treated wood. That’s why, for the heat treatment process, 130 oC for 2 h should be applied in situations where mechanical properties such as modulus of elasticity, compression strength, bending strength, and hardness are important. However, 230 oC for 2 h should be used in situations where it is preferred to obtain favorable physical properties, such as density, shrinkage, swelling, and moisture content.

Dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) is one of the annual plants in Bangladesh that has potential as a fiber source. It is a crop generally cultivated for its nutritive value to soil. This paper describes the effect of harvesting age of dhaincha on chemical, morphological, pulp, and papermaking properties and its bleachability. Dhaincha is a short length fiber that can be used as a substitute to hardwood. Fiber length was found to increase slightly with increasing age of the plant. The alpha-cellulose content in dhaincha increased and pentosan decreased with increasing age. Dhaincha pulp was prepared from 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 month old plants under identical cooking conditions. Pulp yield (43-45 %) and kappa number (26-30) did not follow direct correlation with plant age. But physical properties of unbleached pulp increased linearly with the increase of age. Bleachability of dhaincha pulp was quite poor. The bleachability of pulp was improved when the age of dhaincha was increased.

Oxidative treatments, without and with assistance of a Laccase-Mediator System (LMS), were characterized in relation to their effects on the chemical composition and strength properties of the fibrous fraction of an unbleached recycled softwood kraft pulp. The LMS, composed of a Trametes hirsuta laccase extract and 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT), was applied on the fibrous fraction of a recycled pulp at low consistency under continuous stirring and oxygen bubbling. Control treatments adding neither the enzyme nor the mediator were also considered. The LMS treatment caused a partial reversion of the detrimental effects of hornification. A considerable increase in the amount of carbonyl groups on the lignin structure was observed as a result of the enzyme treatment. The amount of extractives in ethanol:toluene also increased after the enzymatic treatment, and the dioxane-soluble kraft lignin underwent a noticeable decrease in its apparent molecular mass. This latter effect was readily attributed to the hydrolysis of aryl-ether bonds that survived the severity employed in the pulping process. These observations were useful to explain why LMS-recycled fibers produce handsheets with 9.4% better tensile strength than the control pulps.

The paracrystallinity of cellulose samples was studied with a complex of investigation methods including X-ray, NMR, sorption, calorimetry, and some others. It was found that the paracrystalline fraction of cellulose is located on the surface of crystallites as thin monomolecular layers having an average thickness of 0.4 nm. The paracrystalline surface layers have distorted and loose packing that is characterized by a high distortion parameter δp = 0.18, increased specific volume Vp=0.664 cm3/g, and decreased specific gravity ρp= 1.51 g/cm3. The paracrystalline fraction of the crystallite can be quantified by the parameter (α), which has an expressed influence on some properties of cellulose. Increasing of the α-value causes expansion of inter-plane distances in the C1 unit cell, as well as promotes mercerization and dissolution of cellulose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
