Heat treatment of wood is an attractive, environmentally friendly modification, which can change surface visual properties of wood including color and grain, but it is unclear how heat-treated wood is perceived and evaluated compared with untreated wood. In this paper, Chinese fir was heat-treated at 160, 180, 200, or 220 °C for 2 or 4 h. The changes of wood surface color and grain contrast were measured. A subjective questionnaire and eye-tracking technology were used for psychological evaluation. The results showed that changes in the visual properties of heat-treated wood had a significant effect on psychological preference--heat-treated wood was generally more preferred than the untreated, particularly at 200 °C for 4 h. Grain contrast and hue played an important role in the preference for heat-treated wood. The preference gave people the positive psychological impression of warmth, weight, cost, prevalence, and comfort. Eye-tracking analysis showed that Chinese fir heat-treated at about 200 °C with high hue value and clear grain contrast was easier to gain more visual attention. Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) wood specimens were heat-treated separately at three different temperatures (170 °C, 190 °C, and 210 °C) with steam treatment method (STM), oil treatment method (OTM), and hot-air treatment method (HTM). Then, the specimen surfaces were coated with water-based, polyurethane-based, and oil-based varnishes according to industrial applications. The study results show that both hardness and adhesion strength values of STM and HTM treated specimens were similar for both wood species. In contrast, these values were generally lower in OTM-treated specimens. For all applied methods, heat treatment temperature had no significant effect on hardness values. Varnish adhesion strength decreased in all heat-treated wood specimens compared to untreated specimens. Adhesion strength also decreased in STM- and HTM-treated specimens with increasing heat treatment temperature. Hardness values increased in all specimens coated with polyurethane- and water-based varnish compared to the specimens without varnish. However, hardness decreased in the specimens coated with oil-based varnish. In contrast, the highest adhesion resistance was determined in the specimens coated with oil-based varnish under all heat treatment conditions. In addition, the heat treatment method is more effective relative to the hardness values and the treatment temperature is more effective relative to the adhesion strength of varnished pine and beech specimens. Effects of temperature dependence and relative humidity were studied relative to the thermal conductivity of heat-treated pine and heat-treated beech, which are frequently used for building construction. Pine and beech wood were exposed to heat treatment at 180, 200, and 220 °C in nitrogen gas for 2 h. As a result, the thermal conductivity values of the heat-treated wood decreased as the temperature of the heat treatment process increased and relative humidity increased. However, thermal conductivity of wood became more stable after heat treatment under relative humidity changes. The thermal conductivity values increased with rising mean plate temperatures, while the temperature dependence of the heat-treated wood was not affected by the relative humidity changes. The physical and mechanical properties of thermally modified wood impregnated with linseed oil were investigated to find the relationship between the treatment and the acoustic properties. The samples were impregnated with linseed oil (LO). Heat treatment was performed in an oven at four different temperatures, namely 160, 180, 210, and 240 °C. Statistically, the physical, mechanical, and acoustic properties of the treated wood were significantly intensified as compared to the control samples. The physical properties (water absorption) of the treated wood decreased by 72% as compared to the control group. However, while the increase in both MOR and MOE at 240 °C was 13%, the increase in CS at 240 °C was 7%. As a result of the heat treatment, the porosity increased by 33% as compared to the control group. At 240 °C the maximum SAC value was observed to be 0.71 at 5000 Hz and at 4500 Hz 0.78 and 0.80, respectively. The highest STL value, which was 69.9 dB, was observed at 1540 Hz and 3600 Hz. This research aims to optimize the comprehensive performance of woodbased electromagnetic shielding interference (EMI) materials and master the effect of heat treatment on its coating density, interfacial morphology, conductivity, and hydrophobic and electromagnetic shielding. The results showed that the surface roughness of composite coatings was 11.0 μm when the wood was conducted via electroless two deposition Cu and one Ni and the heat treatment temperature was 150 °C. The composite coating’s surface gradually became more uniform with increasing temperature. The coating’s thickness via 120 °C heat treatment was 97.5 μm. Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) spectra verified the existence of Cu and Ni particles. The heat treatment had an obvious influence on conductivity of composite materials and the pore network structure. The contact angle of composite materials reached 119°. The average electromagnetic shielding efficiency via 180 °C heat treatment was up to 91.4 dB in the frequency ranging from 300 to 3.0 GHz, which verified that the composite materials can shield 99.99% of the incident electromagnetic wave energy. Heat treatment in wood materials and the use of water-based varnishes (WBV) in furniture made from heat-treated wood materials come to the fore in terms of supporting environmentally friendly production in the wood sector. In this study, the total color changes (ΔΕ*) and surface roughness (SR) were investigated after heat-treated tree species were exposed to natural and accelerated weathering with and without varnish. In this context, test samples were first divided into two groups. Surface treatment was applied to the samples in the first group by applying modified WBV (A1) and normal WBV (A2), and the second group was left unvarnished. Then, one group of the varnished samples was subjected to natural weathering (NAT) for 90 days and the other group was subjected to accelerated weathering (QUV) for 720 h with VAS samples, and then the ΔΕ* and SR values of the samples were calculated. The results revealed that ΔΕ* was the lowest in the QUV WBV group, and NAT was more effective than QUV in ΔΕ*. The highest SR values among all groups were measured in the VAS group, and among the varnished samples, there was no statistical difference between A1 and A2 in SR values, except for Rq. Effects of heat treatment parameters on the physical properties, mechanical properties, and crystallinity index of Scots pine and beech wood were investigated. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) sapwood samples were prepared in 2 cm × 2 cm × 36 cm dimensions by considering the physical and mechanical tests. The samples were heat-treated for 2 h and 4 h at 150 °C, 180 °C, and 210 °C in an atmospheric environment. The shrinking and swelling percentages of all samples were calculated. The compressive strength, bending strength, modulus of elasticity (MOE), and hardness tests were carried out. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed to calculate the crystallinity index values. As a result of the study, it was determined that heat treatment generally had a positive effect on the physical properties of Scots pine and beech samples. It was observed that the bending strength of the wood samples decreased up to 180 °C as the temperature increased and then increased. It was determined that the MOE of the Scots pine and beech wood decreased with the heat treatment. Surface-compressed wood, with controllable mechanical properties according to the production process, could be utilized in timber products as a substitute for energy-intensive adhesives, concrete, and metals. The surface compression of wood was carried out in an open hot-pressing system at 180 °C with a compressed thickness of 2 to 18 mm. The surfacecompressed wood was treated by atmospheric heat treatment or 0.30 MPa pressurized superheated-steam heat treatment at 180 °C for 2 h. This study investigated the mechanical properties of surface-compressed wood, namely, its bending, compression, and hardness properties. The results showed that the maximum density and average density of the compressed layer surpassed 1.10 g/cm3 and 0.80 g/cm3 when the compression ratio was 33%. Moreover, the surface-compressed wood with a sandwich density structure had properties that were comparable to, or even surpassed, raw wood, traditional compressed wood, and some engineered timber products. The specific strength (179 to 203 × 103 m2/s2) of surface-compressed wood was slightly higher than other wood-based materials (65 to 197 × 103 m2/s2). And the contribution of sandwich structure to MOR and MOE increase was positively correlated with wood surface density. The results obtained from this study could help engineers utilize more fast-growing wood and develop new products and wood connectors. High temperature heat treatment is one of the main technologies with the highest market conversion rate and broad future prospects in the functional technology of wood. Chemical reagents are not added in the production process. The treatment improves the dimensional stability, biological durability, wood color, and acoustic properties without reducing the environmental performance of the product. However, there are some problems in heat treatment, such as the reduction of mechanical properties and surface wettability of wood, high production energy consumption, and large exhaust emissions. Therefore, understanding the influence and mechanism of high temperature heat treatment technology on wood properties is of guiding significance to further improve the quality of heat-treated wood, improve production process, and develop new equipment. This article reviews the effects of heat treatment on the properties of wood and the mechanism of heat treatment. Then, some applications of heat treatment of wood are introduced. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy dissipation spectrometry, dimensional stability, and compressive strength tests were conducted parallel to the fibers on various heat-treated trees, i.e., narrowleaved ash (Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl), aspen (Populus tremula L.), Oriental spruce (Picea orientalis (L.) Link.), and Uludağ fir (Abies bornmüelleriana Mattf.), which grow naturally in forests in Turkey. Panels made from these trees were first heat treated via the ThermoWood® method, producing ThermoWood® panels. Then, FTIR, as well as energy dissipation spectrometry analysis, dimensional stability, and compressive strength tests were performed on test samples prepared from the panels. The FTIR data showed that the hemicelluloses were degraded in the ThermoWood® test samples and the proportion of cellulose increased. The energy dissipation spectrometry results showed that the amount of carbon increased, the amount of oxygen decreased, while the amount of hydrogen remained approximately the same in the ThermoWood® panels compared to the control samples. It was determined that the proportion of silicon increased in the narrow-leaved ash panels. In addition, among the physical properties, the amount of shrinkage and swelling decreased in all the tested ThermoWood® panels compared to the control samples, whereas the compressive strength values, which are considered a mechanical property, increased. Hardness, surface roughness, and adhesion strength were determined for water-based opaque paints applied to heat-treated wood material surfaces. For this purpose, Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) woods were used as experimental material. Specimens were subjected to heat treatment at 3 different temperatures (150, 180, and 210 °C) and 2 different periods (2 and 4 h) under laboratory conditions. Two-component water-based paints with commercial codes D17 and D45 were applied to the surfaces. The hardness, surface roughness, and adhesion strength values of painted samples were determined according to the applicable standards. The results showed that there were higher values of hardness and surface roughness of waterbased paints in short-term heat treatment compared with long-term heat treatment. A general decrease in pine with D17 and D45 paints applied to the surfaces and in beech with D45 in adhesion strength was detected depending on the increasing heat treatment temperature and duration. To investigate the surface properties of different modified poplar (Populus tomentosa Carr.) wood samples, the color, surface roughness, and wettability of untreated poplar wood (control) and poplar modified via heat treatment, resin impregnation, and impregnation combined heat treatment were analyzed and compared in this study. The impregnant used in the test was a modified urea-formaldehyde resin with a low molecular weight and low viscosity. The results showed that the lightness of the samples was sorted in order as follows: the control was lighter than the resin impregnated sample, which was lighter than the impregnation combined heat treatment sample, which was lighter than the heat treatment sample. The surface of the control samples was relatively smooth, while after the impregnation, heat, and impregnation combined heat treatments, the Ra and Rz values increased, which indicated increased surface roughness due to the modifications. Among them, the heat-treated samples had the roughest surface, and the surface roughness of the impregnation combined heat treated samples at 160 °C had no major difference from the resin impregnated sample. The wettability of the samples decreased after heat treatment and increased after impregnation combined heat treatment. Color changes were tested and compared for heat-treated Paulownia tomentosa and Pinus koraiensis wood treated with hot oil or hot air for further utilization of these species. Hot oil and hot air treatments were conducted at 180, 200, and 220 °C for 1, 2, and 3 h. Heat-treated wood color changes were determined using the CIE-Lab color system. Weight changes of the wood before and after heat treatment were also determined. The weight of the oil heat-treated wood increased considerably but it decreased in air heat-treated wood. The oil heat-treated samples showed a greater decrease in lightness (L*) than air heat-treated samples. A significant change in L* was observed in Paulownia tomentosa. The red/green chromaticity (a*) of both wood samples increased at 180 and 200 °C and slightly decreased at 220 °C. The yellow/blue chromaticity (b*) in both wood samples increased at 180 °C, but it rapidly decreased with increasing treatment durations at 200 and 220 °C. The overall color change (ΔE*) in both heat treatments increased with increasing temperature, being higher in Paulownia tomentosa than in Pinus koraiensis. Thyme oil, which is an anti-fungicide, was used to increase the physical and mechanical properties of wood as well as improve its strength, especially in outdoor conditions. For this purpose, Stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) wood samples classified according to the annual number of rings were exposed to either the impregnation process or the combined process, which was comprised of impregnation followed by heat treatment. As a result of the study, it was determined that the wood had different physical and mechanical properties based upon the number of annual rings. In addition, it was specified that the thyme oil used in the impregnation process improved the physical properties of the wood and also reduced the water absorption during the combined process. As a general conclusion, the impregnation process and the combined process increased the mechanical properties of the wood in parallel with an increase in the number of annual rings. The process of impregnation of wood materials with thyme oil is promising due to its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, its ability to be used in small amounts in on-site impregnation, and it being an environmentally friendly product for the wood protection industry. To evaluate the effects of chemical changes during thermal modification on the resistance of wood against photodegradation, heat-treated specimens of rubber wood (Hevea brasiliensis) were exposed to ultraviolet light for 384 h. The color changes in the exposed wood surfaces were analyzed using a colorimeter; the chemical changes were monitored using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The photoweathering performances of rubber wood treated at 155 °C for 2 h, 155 °C for 6 h, and 185 °C for 2 h were similar to that of untreated wood, as the lignin did not undergo profound chemical transformation under mild modification conditions. However, compared to untreated rubber wood, the photoaging performances of rubber wood treated at 185 °C for 6 h and 215 °C for 2 h were notably changed. The transformation process was confirmed by FTIR. A good linear relationship between color change and lignin degradation was observed after mild, but not severe, heat treatment. The concentration of carbonyl groups in the wood specimens generally increased during photoaging, although not all samples showed a good correlation between color change and the concentration of carbonyl groups. The crystallinity and acoustic-vibration parameters of Picea jezoensis, including specific Young’s modulus (E/ρ),coefficient of sound-radiation resistance (R), sound resistance (ω), and the ratio of Young’s modulus to the dynamic stiffness modulus (E/G), before and after heat treatment were measured and characterized. Conditions for the heat treatment included N2 as the protection gas and temperatures of 170 °C, 190 °C, and 210 °C with holding times of 2 h, 3 h, and 4 h. The results showed that specific Young’s modulus, the coefficient of sound-radiation resistance, and the ratio of Young’s modulus to the dynamic stiffness modulus increased, whereas sound resistance decreased, thereby improving the acoustic performance of the wood. The maximum increments were 5.7% for specific Young’s modulus (210 °C, 3 h), 8.8% for the coefficient of sound-radiation resistance (210 °C, 3 h), and 13.8% for the ratio of Young’s modulus to the dynamic stiffness modulus (210 °C, 4 h). Conversely, the maximum decrease in sound resistance was 5.6% (170 °C, 2 h). The crystallinity of heat-treated samples universally increased, and the maximum reached 60.67% (210 °C, 4 h), which was 9.9% higher than that of the control group. Moreover, the sound resistance decreased within increasing crystallinity growth, indicating that these two parameters were negatively correlated. Overall, the acoustic-vibration performance of P. jezoensis was improved through heat treatment, with the best vibration performance obtained at 210 °C with a holding time of 4 h.

The use of heat treatment to modify wood using different treatment heat transfer media, such as nitrogen, vegetable oil, steam, and vacuum, is preferable in many respects to other methods that use chemical treatments. However, the results of the heat treatment differ based on the heat transfer media that are used. In this study, the thermal modification of black pine wood in vacuum, nitrogen, and air atmospheres was studied. The heat treatments were conducted at temperatures of 180°C, 200°C, and 220°C. After the heat treatments, the density, mass loss, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and impact of bending of heat-treated black pine wood were determined. The results indicated that the density, modulus of rupture, and impact of bending decreased as the temperature increased. In addition, the greatest decrease in the mechanical properties of the wood occurred in the test samples that were treated in air. The vacuum atmosphere was least harmful to the mechanical properties of the wood, and the differences in the mechanical properties of the wood that were heat treated in vacuum and nitrogen were unnoticeable. Wood is a renewable and environmental friendly material, but its low dimensional stability characteristics limit its applications. In this study, wax mixed with dimethyl silicone oil was used to enhance the dimensional stability under heat treatment. Samples were heated at 120 °C under 3 impregnation conditions (wax, wax + 20% dimethyl silicone oil, and wax + 40% dimethyl silicone oil) for 3 and 6 h respectively. After treatment the effects of combination pretreatment on wood weight gain percentage (WPG), tangential, radial and volume swelling coefficients (TS, RS, VS), distribution of impregnation liquid, and the types of functional groups of African Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii) were evaluated. The results showed that impregnation improved the dimensional stability of wood to a certain extent; moreover, the addition of dimethyl silicone oil improved the modification effect. Furthermore, the VS reduced to 0.66 (±0.28)% in the treatment of wax + 20% dimethyl silicone oil for 6 h. The impregnation liquid mainly adhered to the walls of vessels and ray cells. Understanding and mastering the color change of wood during heat treatment is essential in the wood working industry because it saves time and reduces energy costs. An artificial neural network (ANN) was employed in this study to establish the relationship between the process parameters of heat treatment and the color change of wood. Three important parameters: temperature (180 °C, 190 °C, 200 °C, 210 °C, and 220 °C), treatment time (2 h, 4 h, 6 h, and 8 h), and wood species (larch and poplar) were considered as inputs to the neural network. There were four neurons in the hidden layer that were used, and an output layer as wood color. According to the results, the mean absolute percentage errors were determined as 0.53%, 0.65%, and 0.31% in the prediction of color change color (ΔE) values for training, validation, and testing data sets, respectively. Determination coefficients (R2) greater than 0.99 were obtained for all data sets with the proposed ANN models. The withdrawal force capacities were compared for T-type furniture joints made from heat-treated Siberian pine (Pinus sibirica), iroko (Chlorophora excelsa), and common ash (Fraxinus excelsior), which are commonly used in the construction of outdoor furniture. A total of 120 specimens that consisted of 3 wood species, 2 treatment processes (untreated and heattreated), 2 adhesive types (polyurethane and polyvinyl acetate), and 2 joinery techniques (mortise and tenon, and dowel) were tested, with 5 replications for each condition. Half of the specimens were constructed from heat-treated wood materials, while the remaining half were prepared from untreated wood materials (control specimens). The joints constructed from common ash and iroko exhibited the highest withdrawal force capacity values. Overall, heat treatment reduced the withdrawal force capacity of joints by 25% compared with the joints constructed of control specimens. Mortise and tenon joints yielded 4 times higher performance than dowel joints. The polyurethane adhesive gave better results than the polyvinyl acetate adhesive. Dimensional stability is an important property of wood that is strongly influenced by its water uptake behavior. Heat treatment is one method to improve wood dimensional stability. This study investigated the effects of heat treatment on the water uptake behavior of wood using a wicking test. The thickness of the tested wood sample was similar to that of the surface wood panel in a 3-layer composite floorboard. It was treated at different temperatures ranging from 200 °C to 400 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere for 10 min to provide the test data to investigate the basic theory relating to dimensional stability of heat-treated wood processed at higher temperatures for a short length of time. During the test, the water uptake of larch (Larix gmelinii) and red oak (Quercus rubra) were recorded continuously. The heattreated wood had a much lower water uptake ability than untreated wood during the early stage of the wicking test; untreated wood exhibited higher total water uptake. Compared with the untreated sample, the red oak wood treated at 400 °C had an average water uptake rate that decreased from 0.28 mg/mm³ per hour to 0.038 mg/mm³ per hour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The risk of possible ignition and burning is one of the greatest disadvantages of using wood as a construction material. An environmentally appropriate method of improving the fire-resistant properties of wood is available via thermal treatment. In this study, spruce wood (Picea abies L.) was thermally modified at 160 °C, 180 °C, and 210 °C. The effect of thermal modification on the fire performance of the wood, including weight loss and burn rate, was evaluated. A new testing method was designed to be sufficiently sensitive to monitor fire performance. The results showed that the thermally modified spruce wood had a lower weight loss than untreated wood. The burn rate of wood that was thermally modified at 160 °C was similar to that of untreated wood. Higher thermal treatment temperatures caused a higher burn rate. This paper investigated the energy consumption differences during plain milling of thermally treated and untreated lodgepole pine wood (Pinus contorta subsp. murrayana). Thermal treatment was completed at four temperatures, which were 160 °C, 180 °C, 210 °C, and 240 °C. Power consumption measuring equipment was used for analysis in order to determine the cutting power of the milling process parameters during circumferential plain milling of lodgepole pine wood. The results indicated that the increase of cutting speed as well as feed speed caused a growth in cutting power. On the other hand, the increase of rake angle and thermal treatment temperature led to strong lowering of cutting power. To investigate chemical and color changes of the polymeric constituents of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) wood during heat treatment, extractive-free wood flour was conditioned to 30% initial moisture content (MC) and heated for 24 h at 120 °C in either an oxygen or nitrogen atmosphere. The color change was measured using the CIELAB color system. Chemical changes of the wood components were determined by means of solid state cross-polarization/magic angle spinning 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (CPMAS-13C-NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), diffuse reflectance UV-Vis (DRUV) spectroscopy, and elemental (CHN) analysis. The results showed that lightness (L*) decreased, while chromaticity indexes (a* and b*) and chroma (C*) increased after heat treatment. There was greater color difference (ΔE*) in the samples heated in the presence of oxygen compared to nitrogen. CHN analysis showed an increase in hydrogen and oxygen and a decrease in carbon content. NMR spectra confirmed the cleavage of the β-O-4 structure in the lignin, resulting in a decrease in etherified lignin units and an increase in phenolic structures. DRUV and FTIR spectra confirmed the formation of extensive conjugated structures, such as unsaturated ketones and quinones due to the cleavage of the lignin units. Formation of quinones can be attributed to heat treatment in the presence of oxygen.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of oxygen and moisture content (MC) on the chemical and color changes of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) wood during heat treatment. The wood flour was conditioned to different initial MCs and heated for 24 h at a constant temperature of 120ºC in either oxygen or nitrogen atmosphere. The pH values and chromaticity indexes were examined. Diffuse reflectance UV-Vis (DRUV) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra were used to characterize the changes of chromophores upon heating. The study demonstrated that the pH values decreased after heat treatment, and it was lower when the heat treated was in oxygen than in nitrogen. The L* decreased significantly, while a* and b* increased. The total color difference ΔE* increased with increasing initial MC until a plateau was reached after 30% MC. The color change was greater in oxygen than in nitrogen. The hydroxyl groups decreased after heat treatment. The releases of acid and formation of quinoid compounds and carboxylic groups during heat treatment were confirmed. Discoloration of wood is due mainly to the condensation and oxidation reactions, which are accelerated by oxygen. Higher MCs are required to obtain the greatest color change of wood in inert atmosphere.

The surface roughness in plane milled Scots pine wood that was thermally modified at 190 °C and 220 °C was examined. Indicators of wood surface roughness included the three most commonly applied parameters, arithmetic mean surface roughness (Ra), surface roughness depth (Rz), and total height of the roughness profile (Rt). Roughness was tested separately for earlywood and latewood using two feed speeds of 1 and 5 m/min. The thickness of the milled layer was 1 mm. The effect of all controlled factors, i.e., feed speed, temperature of modification, and place of measurements, on the parameters of surface roughness were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Surface roughness increased with an increase in feed speed, whereas it decreased with an increased modification temperature. Latewood was characteristically lower in roughness than earlywood. The greatest differences in homogenous groups for the determination of the roughness parameters were found in measurements taken on earlywood and latewood, while the smallest differences were recorded for different feed speeds. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of an industrial heat treatment (ThermoWood) based on changes in the strength properties, density, and color of spruce (Picea abies) and pine (Pinus sylvestris) woods. Samples were subjected to heat treatment processes at 212 °C for a duration of 120 min. The results showed that the applied process caused a 2.56 to 6.12% decrease in density. Dimensional stability was considerably improved, with ASE values of 58% and 52% for spruce and pine, respectively. The color became darker after treatment. The process caused a significant (p<0.05) reduction (8 to 42%) for all investigated mechanical properties at a specific moisture level (12%). However, the mechanical properties of wood are closely related to its moisture content, and heat-treated wood is less hygroscopic than untreated wood. It was found that, after long-term acclimatization, heat-treated samples had almost half the equilibrium moisture content of control samples. Because the changes that occurred after this heat treatment are irreversible, it is possible that ThermoWood has lower equilibrium moisture content than untreated wood. Moisture content (MC) has an important effect on the performance of wood in service. In an attempt to rapidly and non-destructively acquire the MC of heat-treated wood, a radio frequency-type moisture meter was used to take the MC of 170, 185, and 200 °C heat-treated Manchurian ash and Mongolian pine wood samples as well as reference (conventional kiln-dried) samples. A linear regression analysis was applied to assess the relationship between the MC values obtained using the meter and those obtained using the oven-dry method by fitting the data points according to the least squares method. From the results of the high coefficients of determination of the regression equation, it was concluded that the meter could be effectively used to obtain the MC of heat-treated wood. Finally, to ensure the simple and reliable application of the meter, the meter correction factors corresponding to each species and heat treatment temperature were calculated and listed. The interactive effect of the thermo-mechanical densification and heat treatment on the set-recovery of modified wood were investigated for optimizing the combined modification process in this study. Process parameters such as thermo-mechanical densification temperature, duration of densification, and heat treatment temperature were selected as main factors. Three levels of each of these factors were chosen, and then nine experiments plus one verification experiment were conducted according to the principles of the Taguchi DoE method and the results of ANOVA analysis. It was observed that the dimensional stability of combined modified Chinese fir wood in the compression direction can be effectively improved by elevating the heat treatment temperature and densification temperature, the percentage contributions of which were 76.04% and 21.18%, respectively. Meanwhile, the set-recovery had no dependence on the duration of the densification process. The value of the set-recovery in the verification experiment agreed quite well with the predictions. From an economic view, the optimal condition for the combination modification of Chinese fir wood was that of a densification temperature of 170 °C, densification duration of 10 min, and heat treatment temperature of 200 °C. The aim of the present study was to determine the surface roughness of heat-treated Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), Eastern beech (Fagus orientalis L.), Uludağ fir (Abies bornmülleriana Mattf.), and sessile oak (Quercus petraea L.) wood material samples following planning by the cutters of a horizontal milling machine. The samples that were heat- treated at 140 ºC or 160 ºC for 3, 5, or 7 hours were then processed by star blades or razor blades, which are the most frequently used blade types in a milling machine. The surface roughness of the samples was determined by a touch (spinned) scan device (TIME TR200), as indicated by the ISO 4287 principle. The results of the study indicate that heat treatment decreases the surface roughness value of the wood material and a significant difference in surface roughness cannot be detected between planning using the razor blade or the star blade. Thermal modification of wood in a hot-oil bath is a green process, which improves wood properties using natural products. The process imparts a uniform brown color to the wood and increases its dimensional stability. The improved properties create value-added opportunities for some wood species to be used for high performance applications such as flooring products. This study focused on the optimization of the oil-heat-treatment process to find different approaches for saving energy and also evaluating the performance of water-based coatings on oil-heat treated wood. Effects of process variables on development of wood drying defects such as, checking, cupping, crooking, bowing, twisting, and grain raise were evaluated. This included investigation of effects of Initial wood moisture content and delayed cooling of treated wood in an oven or under a thermal blanket. Our results showed that wood can be treated at an initial moisture content around 8 to 10 percent and cooled in a blanket instead of in an oven without increasing wood defects. Testing the performance of four commercially formulated water-based coatings on heat-treated wood showed that the coatings had an overall better color retention, abrasion, and scratch resistance on the heat-treated wood than on the untreated wood. Combined treatment with steam and heat was imposed on green Turkey oak (Quercus cerris L.) wood, both for sapwood and heartwood. Steaming was carried out in an autoclave at 100, 120, or 130 °C, and then a portion of the samples was heated in an oven for 2 h at 120 or 180 °C. Extraction with ethanol provided the greatest extractive contents in sapwood, and the extractive quantity decreased as the heating temperature was increased to 180 °C. In contrast, extraction with dichloromethane provided the greatest extractive content in heartwood, and no sizeable differences were found among the various treatments. Lignin amounts increased with rising treatment temperatures combined with steaming at 100 and 120 °C until the greatest value of 31.1% lignin content was reached. However, the lignin content decreased as the steaming temperatures rose to 130 °C. In all the combined treatments, the lignin content was greater in heartwood than in sapwood. Heat treatment may result in variation of wood equilibrium moisture content (EMC). During this study, tauari (Couratari oblongifolia), ash (Fraxinus excelsior), and oak (Quercus rubra) woods were heat-treated at 190, 200, and 210ºC for 3 hours and then put into a conditioning chamber with a temperature from 30 to 75ºC and a relative humidity from 50 to 90%. The isothermal moisture adsorption curve was subsequently analyzed. Results indicated that the EMC of heat-treated wood was reduced by 23.4 to 37.4% compared to non-treated wood, but the EMC difference at different heat-treated temperatures for three hardwoods was quite small and the EMC of heat-treated wood was inversely proportional to their dry density. Effects of heat treatment on the physical properties of heartwood and sapwood of Cedrus libani A. Richard, such as density, equilibrium moisture content, swelling, and fiber saturation point were investigated. Heartwood and sapwood samples were treated at 140, 160, 180, 200, and 220°C for 3 h. After heat treatment, the physical properties of the samples of wood were determined according to Turkish standards. The results showed that mass loss increased and physical properties decreased as the treatment temperature increased. As the treatment temperature was increased, the mass of the heartwood decreased more than that of the sapwood, which may be due to the fact that the heartwood had greater extractives content. Conversely, even though the mass of the heartwood decreased more than the mass of the sapwood at the treatment temperature of 220°C, its physical properties, such as equilibrium moisture content, swelling, and fiber saturation point, decreased less than those of the sapwood. In this work, the effect of oil heat treatment (OHT) on the swelling properties and changes in the rate of moisture uptake of poplar wood (Populus x euramericana cv. Pannónia) were investigated. Eighteen different treatments (combinations of three vegetable oils, two temperatures, and three durations) were studied. The results showed that OHT decreases the equilibrium moisture content (EMC) and the swelling of poplar wood. The degree of swelling and the EMC are influenced by both the duration and temperature of treatment. With an increase in duration and temperature, the EMC decreased. Consequently, the anti-swelling efficiency (ASE) increased. OHT wood adsorbs less moisture than natural wood, but it reaches a maximum - EMC at the momentary climate - at the same time under all the investigated treatments. The moisture uptake is fastest in the beginning and thereafter it slows significantly. Decreasing the moisture uptake by OHT wood is due to the decreasing of its water storage capacity. The effect of commercial heat treatment on physical and mechanical properties of compression wood (CW) and opposite wood (OW) of black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) was investigated. Black pine logs containing CW were cut parallel to the pith and separated into CW and OW sections. A commercial heat treatment process was applied to pine lumber at 180 and 210 ºC for 3 hours. Water absorption (WA), contact angle (CA), swelling, modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), and impact bending strength (IBS) were measured. The results showed that heat treatment decreased water absorption and swelling of the CW and OW of black pine. Heat treatment at 210 °C temperature decreased the longitudinal swelling of CW by 51.4%. Higher immersion time lowered the effect of heat treatment on the WA values. The CA values of the CW and OW increased due to heat treatment. Heat treatment reduced the MOR, MOE, and IBS values. The results indicated that MOR, MOE, and CA values were highly affected in the CW; on the other hand, the IBS value was highly affected in the OW by heat treatment compared to control groups. The durability of thermally modified (TM) and untreated (UT) mini-stakes exposed to in-ground contact was compared by modulus of elasticity (MOE) and mass loss with decay type using microscopy. Results showed a strong correlation between MOE and soft rot decay for UT stakes over a 30 month exposure period. For TM stakes, the correlation between MOE and decay rate (soft rot/bacteria) was not as strong. Loss of MOE of the TM stakes is suggested to be accentuated by the extensive micro-checking produced in the TM wood tracheids during the original heat treatment. The micro-checks are thought to expand during the winter season due to water expansion during freezing, thereby leading to weakening of the wood in addition to the decay caused by soft rot and bacteria. The effects of different circular saws on surface roughness were determined for heat-treated wood, including Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), eastern beech (Fagus orientalis L.), Uludag fir (Abies bornmülleriana Mattf.), and sessile oak (Quercus petraea L.), which are used commonly in Turkey. Samples were heat-treated for 3, 5, or 7 hours at 140 or 160ºC, and cut with circular saws with 28, 48, 60, 72, or 96 teeth. Then, the surface roughness of the samples was determined using a scanning device (TIME TR200) with respect to the ISO 4287 standard. Heat treatment increased the surface roughness of the wood used, and changed the colour of the wood. Wood heat treatment has increased significantly in the last few years and is still growing as an industrial process to improve some wood properties. The first studies on heat treatment investigated mainly equilibrium moisture, dimensional stability, durability and mechanical properties. Mass loss, wettability, wood color, and chemical transformations have been subsequently extensively studied, while recent works focus on quality control, modeling, and study the reasons for the improvements. This review explains the recent interest on the heat treatment of wood and synthesizes the major publications on this subject on wood properties, chemical changes, wood uses, and quality control.
