1. Printability and Properties of 3D-printed Poplar Fiber/Polylactic Acid Biocomposite.

Abstract

To efficiently and economically utilize a wood-plastic biocomposite, an eco-friendly biocomposite was prepared using modified poplar fiber and polylactic acid (PLA) via 3D printing technology for the first time. First, the effects of poplar fiber (0, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9%) on the mechanical and rheological properties of the printed biocomposites were investigated. Subsequently, the printing parameters, including printing temperature, speed, and layer thickness, were optimized to obtain the biocomposite with superior properties. Finally, four printing orientations were applied to the biocomposite based on the optimized printing parameters to study the effect of filament orientation on the properties of the biocomposite. Favorable printability and mechanical properties of the biocomposite were obtained at 5% poplar fiber. The optimal printing temperature of 220 °C, speed of 40 mm/s, and layer thickness of 0.2 mm were obtained to produce the desired mechanical properties of the biocomposite with the printing orientation in a longitudinal stripe. However, the printing parameters should be chosen according to the applications, where different physical and mechanical properties are needed to achieve efficient and economical utilization of the biocomposites. Abstract

The objective of this work was to study the biodegradability of polylactic acid (PLA)/paddy straw powder (PSP) biocomposites. Environmental degradation was evaluated by composting the biocomposite samples into the soil. Different techniques, including mechanical tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), were used to obtain a view of the degradation that occurred during the soil burial of the biocomposites. Results of the mechanical tests showed that an increasing content of PSP in the biocomposites decreased the tensile strength and elongation at break (EB), while it increased the modulus of elasticity after six months of exposure. Scanning electron microscopy on the surface after soil burial showed that the filler was poorly wetted by the matrix. This explains the reduction in tensile strength and the elongation at break after soil burial. Differential scanning calorimetry results indicated that the crystallinity of the biocomposites increased with longer composting periods.

Abstract

Polylactic acid (PLA) biocomposites were prepared by melt blending in an internal mixer with various types of rubber. The rubber was 90/10 wt% and was mixed before the addition of kenaf fiber (0 to 20 phr). Natural rubber (NR), nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) were used. The effects of different types of rubber and kenaf loading were investigated based on processing torque, water absorption, mechanical properties, and fractured surface morphology. A similar trend in processing torque was observed throughout the composition of biocomposites. The stabilization torque was highest for the biocomposite with NR, followed by SBR and NBR. Water absorption increased as the kenaf loading increased. The polarity of NBR and SBR contributed to higher water absorption in the biocomposites compared to the NR. The strain-induced crystallization phenomenon and higher green strength of NR contributed to the highest tensile strength, elongation at break, and impact strength of the biocomposite compared to the NBR and SBR toughened PLA/kenaf biocomposite. More plastic deformation and less fiber pullout were observed in the fractured surface morphology. However, by increasing the kenaf loading, the mechanical properties decreased for all biocomposites, which was due to poor interfacial adhesion and agglomeration.

Abstract

Effects of durian skin fiber (DSF), epoxidized palm oil (EPO), and cinnamon essential oil (CEO) on the physical and functional properties of polylactic acid (PLA) biocomposite films were investigated. The biocomposite films were produced via a solution casting process. The results indicated that the PLA with 3 wt.% DSF absorbed the maximum amount of water (5.9%), which was due to the hydrophilic characteristics of the DSF. Additionally, PLA and DSF lost the most weight after decomposing for 50 days in soil. The dart drop impact test showed a reduction in the impact failure weight of the PLA composites with EPO and CEO, which could have been because of their porosity; hence, a porosity was created between the microstructures. Interestingly, the tear resistance was remarkably amplified for the biocomposites with EPO and CEO. From the migration study, the PLA, DSF, EPO, and CEO biocomposite film appeared to be suitable for use as food packaging for all types of food, as there were no negative effects when they were tested with aqueous, alcoholic, acidic, fatty, and milk food product types.

Abstract

Palm kernel shell (PKS) was incorporated with polylactic acid (PLA) using a solution casting method to produce PLA/PKS biocomposite films. The effects of filler content and butyl methacrylate on the mechanical properties, morphological properties, and thermal properties of PLA/PKS biocomposite films were studied. The addition of PKS into the PLA matrix decreased the tensile strength and elongation at break of PLA/PKS biocomposite films with increasing filler content. In contrast, the modulus of elasticity of the biocomposite films increased. The use of butyl methacrylate as a chemical modification for PKS enhanced the interfacial adhesion and wettability of PKS inside the PLA matrix. This effect was confirmed by the increase in tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and thermal stability of the biocomposite films. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy showed that there was better interfacial interaction between the filler and the PLA matrix.

Abstract

Kenaf-derived cellulose (KDC)-filled poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites were prepared via melt blending and compression molding to improve the properties of PLA by introducing a natural cellulose that was chemically derived (chlorination and mercerization processes) from plant-based kenaf bast fibers. The effect of KDC content (0-60 wt.%) on the tensile elongation at the break point and during flexural and impact testing and on the water absorption and density of the composites was investigated, while the neat PLA polymer (without the addition of cellulose) served as a reference for the composites. The elongation at the break point of the composites was 9% on average, making it less elastic than the neat PLA. The flexural strength and modulus also increased by 36% and 54%, respectively. The impact strength of the composites was improved at KDC contents below 40 wt.%, but the impact strength was reduced above 40 wt.%. The composite containing the highest amount of KDC (60 wt.%) was denser than the neat PLA and had a water uptake of approximately 12%, which is notably low for a biocomposite system.
