Graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) were incorporated into thermoplastic starch (TPS) films, and effects on water absorption and mechanical properties were investigated. GNP inclusion formed a barrier that significantly reduced water absorption, resulting in denser TPS/GNP films. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed changes in chemical interactions, and FESEM analysis showed improved GNP dispersion at this concentration. Water contact angle results indicated increased hydrophobicity with higher GNP content. Positive influences on mechanical properties, such as tensile strength and Young's modulus, were observed at 12 wt% GNP, but excessive GNP content caused agglomeration and reduced ductility. The study results highlight the potential of GNP-reinforced TPS films for improved water resistance and mechanical properties, emphasizing the need for careful optimization in future research. Recently, new brake pads have been developed using sustainable materials that are not harmful to the environment. In this study, the effect of using blue-colored Cupressus arizonica cones was determined as a friction modifier in brake pad composites. Four different samples were prepared by grinding the cone material. The samples’ physical and chemical properties and performances were compared, and finally, their microscopic analyses were visualized by scanning electron microscopy. Maximum friction coefficient and minimum wear rate are required for brake pads. The maximum friction coefficient of 0.39 and the minimum wear rate of the samples containing Cupressus arizonica were obtained in the 0.124X10-7 cm³ /Nm BCA3 sample. When the brake pads developed from lignocellulosic biomass were compared, it was determined that the BCA3 sample met the most reasonable performance values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of the chemical treatment of paper mill sludge fibers and polypropylene molecular weight were studied relative to the physical, mechanical, and morphological properties of a novel cellulosic biocomposite. Paper mill sludge fibers were treated with acetic anhydride, and succinic anhydride was mixed with maleic anhydride polypropylene (MAPP) and coupling agent (0 and 3%). The ratio of fibers and polymer materials was considered 30 to 70, which was manufactured by the hotpressing method at 180 °C. Water absorption, volume swelling, and contact angle were examined on each specimen according to ASTM standards, while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) explored the efficiency of chemical modification of fibers and the morphology of biocomposites, respectively. The results showed that chemical treatment of fibers reduced the water absorption and volumetric swelling. Both tensile and flexural strength were increased with chemical treatment using the coupling agent. Comparison of fibers treated with succinic acid and acetic acid showed that the succinic acid enhanced the mechanical properties better than the acetic acid treatment. Finally, FTIR analysis showed that the hydroxyl groups decreased, and SEM images indicated the interface between fibers and polypropylene improved via chemical treatment of sludge fibers. Bioderived poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a promising alternative for fossilbased polymers, but its poor hydrophilicity, high brittleness, and low heatresistance are problems for its utilization. In this work, bleached softwood kraft pulp (BSKP) fiber was adopted to modify PLA with MAPP as the coupling agent, with BSKP accounting for 10 wt% to 50 wt%. Internal mixing (IM) was applied to mix the PLA/fiber blend instead of screw grinding. The thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were assessed. The IM process was proven qualified for its effective dispersion of BSKP fibers in the PLA matrix. At a fiber loading of 50 wt%, IMprocessed composites acquired satisfactory tensile strength (50.49 MPa, slightly higher than PLA) and Young's modulus (2.56 GPa, 45.8% higher than PLA). The pulp fillers matched PLA matrix well for the characteristic temperatures in thermal decomposition. The BSKP/PLA composites were thermally strengthened by pulp fibers characterized by higher content of residues. The fibers improved the interfacial crystallinity of PLA in the composites (i.e., from 5.22% to 11.86%). The increased crystallinity resulted in enhanced stiffness or weaker damping performance of the composites. Hevea brasiliensis wood becomes residue at plantations in Malaysia. In this study, these residues were reinforced into silicone rubber to produce a new soft biocomposite (Hevea brasiliensis-silicone biocomposite). The newly introduced soft biocomposite has potential for use in cushioning and sealing applications. The specimens were prepared with five different compositions (0 wt%, 4 wt%, 8 wt%, 12 wt%, and 16 wt% fiber content). Tensile tests were conducted according to ASTM D412 (2008) to assess the mechanical properties. Morphological characteristics were analyzed from the fractured surface of specimens. Stress-stretch data was used to quantify the non-linear tensile behavior, which was based on Neo-Hookean, Mooney-Rivlin, and Ogden hyperelastic constitutive equations. An increase in fiber content improved the modulus of silicone rubber. However, it reduced the flexibility and elastic properties of the silicone rubber biocomposite. The increasing material constant values supported these findings. The hyperelastic models accurately represented the behavior of the Hevea brasiliensis-silicone biocomposite. Silicone rubber biocomposites were prepared with 0%, 4%, 8%, 12%, and 16% bamboo fiber as reinforcement. The compressive set behavior of the samples was compared between the samples that were tested before and after immersion in water. The compression set values for the samples that were immersed in the water were lower than the samples that were not immersed in the water. The moisture absorption rate of the bamboosilicone biocomposites (BaSiCs) increased as the bamboo fiber content increased. As the bamboo fiber content in the BaSiCs increased, the impact energy and the deflection at peak load values decreased and increased, respectively. The results from this study showed that the addition of bamboo fiber into silicone rubber composites can substantially affect its compressive strength, moisture absorption, and impact strength. The agricultural industry is one of the main economic contributors in developing countries, especially in tropical regions. Extensive land clearing has led to severe erosion within the watersheds, which increases the vulnerability of water catchments to natural disasters, such as floods. Cellulosic fibers, such as jute, sisal, kenaf, hemp, and coir, are gaining increasing worldwide attention for their potential application in controlling soil erosion, principally due to their remarkable biodegradable and physical properties. Nonetheless, the research on biocomposites in controlling soil erosion is limited compared to the natural fibers. This is perhaps due to poor availability and high cost of biodegradable polymers compared to natural fibers, which are abundant and inexpensive. Poor adhesive interactions between the matrix and natural fibers due to the hydrophilic characteristic of the fibers is another major drawback that limits the development of biocomposites for controlling soil erosion. To efficiently and economically utilize a wood-plastic biocomposite, an eco-friendly biocomposite was prepared using modified poplar fiber and polylactic acid (PLA) via 3D printing technology for the first time. First, the effects of poplar fiber (0, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9%) on the mechanical and rheological properties of the printed biocomposites were investigated. Subsequently, the printing parameters, including printing temperature, speed, and layer thickness, were optimized to obtain the biocomposite with superior properties. Finally, four printing orientations were applied to the biocomposite based on the optimized printing parameters to study the effect of filament orientation on the properties of the biocomposite. Favorable printability and mechanical properties of the biocomposite were obtained at 5% poplar fiber. The optimal printing temperature of 220 °C, speed of 40 mm/s, and layer thickness of 0.2 mm were obtained to produce the desired mechanical properties of the biocomposite with the printing orientation in a longitudinal stripe. However, the printing parameters should be chosen according to the applications, where different physical and mechanical properties are needed to achieve efficient and economical utilization of the biocomposites. Cocoa is among the most cultivated and important tropical crops in the world, and it is economically viable in the agro-pastoral systems of tropical Africa. Further, the amount of cocoa residue is steadily increasing due to the strong worldwide demand for chocolate products. This review of cocoa residue found that an average of 18 publications per year were published in the last 10 years. The most common type of publication on cocoa pod husks (CPH) was newspaper articles, which comprised 50% of the publications. This review examines the use of CHP in sustainable development, agrochemical materials, and agro-materials through their potential valorizations into high value-added products. Indeed, CPH is an abundant, accessible, and renewable resource of bioproducts, dietary fibers, nutraceuticals, functional foods, pectin, antioxidant compounds, theobromine, and minerals. Potential food applications of CPH include the production of flavor compounds, gums, texturing agents, and others. The production of biomaterials for food and non-food use, biofuels, and organic acids, such as lactic acid (the polymerization of which produces the PLA used in bioplastic production), are several potential areas for the biotechnological development of CPH and its fractions. Starch has potential to be used in new, functional food packaging materials. The attractive factors of starch as a packaging material are its low price and degradable properties. However, brittleness hinders its function as a packaging film. In this study, chitosan nanofillers (CSN) were incorporated into sago starch (SS) formulations to improve the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of the film. The synthesis of a new formulation from the optimization process resulted in increased mechanical properties; the tensile strength obtained for the sago starch/chitosan nanofillers (SS/CSN) film was 88 MPa compared with 46 MPa for the sago starch film (SSF). In terms of thermogravimetric analysis, the SS/CSN film sustained up to 390°C with 60% weight loss, whereas SSF experienced a weight loss of 67% at 375°C. A composite prepared from oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) and abundantly available wild seaweed showed great potential as a soil stabilizer, which is attributed to its natural hydrophilic nature. The water absorption and thickness swelling percentages of the oil palm empty fruit bunch-seaweed composite (OPEFB-SW) were recorded at 117.2% (± 7.1) and 10.5% (± 1.7), respectively. The main objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the biocomposite in regulating runoff volume and water quality due to soil erosion from the experimental plots. Hence, the volume, turbidity, and total suspended solids (TSS) of the water runoff were investigated. A rainfall simulation test was conducted to test the effectiveness of the cover material (biocomposite) at different application levels (0 kg/m2 (T1), 3.0 kg/m2 (T2), 4.0 kg/m2 (T3), and 5.0 kg/m2 (T4)) of the composite in reducing soil erosion. Overall, the OPEFB-SW composite demonstrated its capability to absorb rainfall impact and therefore stabilize the soil structure. The runoff volume, turbidity, and TSS were reduced significantly to 49.1%, 94.6%, and 99.2%, respectively. A green biocomposite of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) (P34HB) and cellulose aerogels was developed. Cellulose gel was prepared from NaOH/urea aqueous solution, and subsequent regenerating by Na2SO4 solution and freeze-drying resulted in porous cellulose aerogels. The P34HB/cellulose aerogel biocomposite was fabricated by immersion of porous cellulose in a polymer solution and hot-pressing. The morphology, crystallization, thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties (H2O) of biocomposite were investigated. The cellulose aerogels matrix exhibited a three-dimensional network structure with porosity and a wide pore size distribution, contributing to the change of the glass transition temperature and cold crystallization temperature of biocomposites. Compared with cellulose aerogels, the tensile strength and elongation at break of biocomposites were increased by as much as 48% and 25.1%, respectively. Moreover, biocomposites demonstrated an increased contact angle and water vapor permeability coefficient compared with the cellulose aerogel. A biocomposite manufactured from peroxide/silane crosslinked poly(lactic acid) reinforced with hybridized empty fruit bunch (EFB) oil palm and cotton fibers was investigated. Optimization of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and the vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) crosslink system by using the 2k factorial design of experiment (DOE), with k = 2 was preliminary employed. There was no significant effect of the designed parameters, DCP(A) and VTMS(B), on the properties of the biocomposite. Concerning the environmental and economical aspects, the DPC and VTMS ratio was important. A crosslink agent content from 0.5 phr of DCP with 1 phr to 2 phr VTMS was recommended to manufacture a biocomposite with high heat distortion temperature (HDT) at above 100 °C and reasonable flow and mechanical properties. Also, the direct addition of the DCP/VTMS crosslink agent onto the PLA/rubber compound mixture and fed into a twin screw extruder for producing crosslinked PLA/EFB/cotton hybrid biocomposites were the optimized mixing methods. Shorter process line/time, ease of process steps, and reasonable engineering properties were justified. A HDT above 100 °C with a better toughness property of the biocomposite material was obtained. Composite materials comprising a mixture of shellac resin as the matrix and cellulose as the reinforcement were developed. The influence of the reinforcement content and the concentration of additives on the mechanical performance and processing were investigated. A high content of cellulose and low concentrations of ethanol and polyethylene glycol produced biocomposites with high stress resistance and a high Young's modulus, whereas a low content of cellulose and a high concentration of additives gave samples a low Young's modulus and high elasticity. Two types of cellulose-based reinforcements with different polarity, namely, mechanically refined wood pulp and cellulose acetate butyrate particles, were compared. The efficiency of the composite over the two model reinforcements, i.e., hydrophilic and hydrophobic components, respectively, was also studied. Although particle reinforcement was easier to process and evenly dispersed into the matrix, its mechanical performance was lower compared with refined fibres. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the matrix better coated the fibres than the particles, resulting in better adhesion and mechanical performance. The effect of fiber surface modification by superheated steam (SHS) treatment and fiber content (30 to 50 wt.%) was evaluated relative to the mechanical, morphology, thermal, and water absorption properties of oil palm mesocarp fiber (OPMF)/polypropylene (PP) biocomposites. SHS treatment of OPMF was conducted between 190 and 230 °C for 1 h, then the SHS-treated fiber was subjected to melt-blending with PP for biocomposite production. The biocomposite prepared from SHS-OPMF treated at 210 °C with 30 wt.% fiber loading resulted in SHS-OPMF/PP biocomposites with a tensile strength of 20.5 MPa, 25% higher than untreated-OPMF/PP biocomposites. A significant reduction of water absorption by 31% and an improved thermal stability by 8% at T5%degradation were also recorded. Scanning electron microscopy images of fractured SHS-OPMF/PP biocomposites exhibited less fiber pull-out, indicating that SHS treatment improved interfacial adhesion between fiber and PP. The objective of this work was to study the biodegradability of polylactic acid (PLA)/paddy straw powder (PSP) biocomposites. Environmental degradation was evaluated by composting the biocomposite samples into the soil. Different techniques, including mechanical tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), were used to obtain a view of the degradation that occurred during the soil burial of the biocomposites. Results of the mechanical tests showed that an increasing content of PSP in the biocomposites decreased the tensile strength and elongation at break (EB), while it increased the modulus of elasticity after six months of exposure. Scanning electron microscopy on the surface after soil burial showed that the filler was poorly wetted by the matrix. This explains the reduction in tensile strength and the elongation at break after soil burial. One of the big global, environmental, and socioeconomic challenges of today is to make a transition from fossil fuels to biomass as a sustainable supply of renewable raw materials for industry. Growing public awareness of the negative environmental effects of petrochemical-based products adds to the need for alternative production chains, especially in materials science. One option lies in the value-added upcycling of agricultural byproducts, which are increasingly being used for biocomposite materials in transport and building sector applications. Here, sunflower by-product (obtained by grinding the stems) is considered as a source of natural fibers for engineered biocomposite material. Recent results are shown for the main mechanical properties of sunflower-based biocomposites and the socioeconomic impact of their use. This paper demonstrates that sunflower stem makes a good candidate feedstock for material applications. Consecutive superheated steam-alkali treatment was introduced to modify oil palm mesocarp fiber (OPMF) prior to biocomposite fabrication. The biocomposite made up of 70 wt.% modified OPMF (SNOPMF) and 30 wt.% poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) was prepared by melt blending followed by compression molding. A silane coupling agent of 3- aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) was also incorporated into the SNOPMF/PBS biocomposite during the compounding process to impart better adhesion at the SNOPMF-PBS interface. The experimental results revealed that the tensile, flexural, and impact strengths were enhanced by 16, 30, and 15%, respectively, after the introduction of 2 wt.% APTMS to the SNOPMF/PBS biocomposite. Similarly, the resistance to water uptake and thickness swelling of this biocomposite was improved by 34 and 49%, respectively, relative to SNOPMF/PBS biocomposite. The SEM observation of the tensile fracture surface showed that APTMS improved the interfacial adhesion between SNOPMF and PBS. Based on the results, it can be deduced that APTMS could be a good coupling agent for improving the SNOPMF-PBS adhesion and, thereby, lead to a water resistant biocomposite of enhanced mechanical properties. In this work, the surface of oil palm mesocarp fiber (OPMF) was modified via alkaline-peroxide treatment with hydrogen peroxide under alkaline conditions. The effect of the treatment on the chemical composition and microstructure of the fiber was examined using chemical analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The treatment resulted in the removal of lignin, hemicellulose, and waxy substances from the fiber and increased its surface roughness and crystallinity. The eco-friendly biocomposite was made from poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and chemically treated fiber at a weight ratio of 30:70, and was fabricated via a melt-blending technique followed by hot-pressed moulding. The results indicated that alkaline-peroxide treatment of the fiber improved the tensile strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at break of the OPMF/PBS biocomposite by 54, 830, and 43%, respectively. The SEM analysis revealed improvement of the interfacial adhesion between the chemically treated fiber and the PBS. In this work, oil palm mesocarp fiber (OPMF) was surface-treated with varying NaOH concentrations (1, 3, 5, 7, or 9%) and soaking times (1, 2, 3, or 4 h) at room temperature aiming to enhance its adhesion to the thermoplastic matrix for biocomposite application. The biocomposites from alkali treated OPMFs and poly(butylene succinate) at weight ratios of 70:30 were fabricated by a melt blending technique and hot-pressed moulding. The results indicate that NaOH treatment removed fiber's surface waxes, hemicellulose, and lignin, and produced fiber with rough surface morphology. The tensile results showed that OPMF treated in 5% NaOH solution for 3 h produced biocomposite with enhanced tensile strength (30%), tensile modulus (105%), and elongation at break (16%), as well as reduced water absorption (15%) and thickness swelling (13%) in comparison to that of untreated OPMF. Scanning electron microscopy showed improvement of interfacial adhesion between treated fiber and poly(butylene succinate). In this work, surface modifications of oil palm mesocarp fiber were carried out by using superheated steam, alkali, and consecutive superheated steam-alkali treatments, aiming at modification of fiber's surface for biocomposite applications. The chemical compositions of fiber were modified after treatments as validated by chemical analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The treated fibers under microscopy observation showed relatively clean, rough, and textured surfaces due to the elimination of impurities and hemicellulose. The crystallinity index and thermal stability of treated fibers were relatively higher than that of untreated fiber as determined by X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analyses, respectively. A reduction in water absorption of fiber after treatments was also noted. These results indicated those treatments were effective in modifying the chemical compositions and microstructure of fiber. The treatments also increased the crystallinity and thermal stability, as well as reduced the hygroscopicity of fiber. Empty fruit bunch oil palm (EFBOP) fibres were surface modified by four different methods, propionylation, vinyltrimethoxy silanization, PPgMA dissolution modification, and PPgMA blending, and integrated into a polypropylene (PP) matrix. The designed biocomposites were subjected to an absorption process at different temperatures. Their water uptake behaviour was compared with the unmodified fibre biocomposites. An increased fibre content and temperature resulted in increased water uptake for all of the biocomposites. The biocomposites containing modified fibres showed a reduction in water uptake, rate of diffusion, sorption, and permeation in comparison with unmodified fibre composites. Comparing the 20 wt% fibre composites at ambient temperature, the performance in water absorption followed the sequence silanization < propionylation < PPgMA dissolution modification < PPgMA blending < no modification. Furthermore, the lowest water absorption was obtained from the silanized fibre/PP composite with 40% fibre content at ambient temperature. Dissolution or blending of PPgMA gave similar water uptake results. Corn cob (CC) was used as a filler in chitosan (CS) biopolymer films. The effect of glutaraldehyde (GLA) as a crosslinking agent was studied in an effort to improve the properties of CS/CC biocomposite films prepared via solvent casting. The tensile strength and elongation at break values decreased, but the modulus of elasticity increased with CC content. However, the tensile properties of CS/CC biocomposite films improved when modified with GLA. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) results indicated the presence of imine bonds (C=N) and ethylenic groups due to the cross-linking reaction between CS and GLA. The thermal stability of CS/CC biocomposite films reduced with increasing CC content. The modification of CS/CC with GLA enhanced the thermal stability of the biocomposite films. Moreover, the wettability and adhesion of the CC-CS system were enhanced by modification with GLA, as demonstrated by a morphological study. The electrical properties of chicken feather fiber (CFF) and kenaf fiber (KF) unsaturated polyester (UP) composites have been studied with reference to fiber loading and frequency. Tests were carried out to compare the suitability of the two different composites as a dielectric material. The chicken feather fiber unsaturated polyester composite exhibited an overall lower dielectric constant, dissipation factor, and loss factor compared to the kenaf fiber unsaturated polyester composites. The values were high for the composites with fiber contents at 40%. The dielectric value increments were high at low frequencies, and they gradually reached significantly lower values at higher frequencies. Based on the results it was judged that chicken feather fiber composites would be suitable for application as high speed printed circuit board (PCB) material with good frequency stability at 1 MHz. This paper demonstrates the preparation of transparent biocomposites from chitin nanofiber using a series of simple mechanical treatments after the removal of proteins and minerals. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images show that the prepared chitin nanofibers are highly uniform with a width of less than 50 nm and a high aspect ratio. Due to the nano-size, the fibers are small enough to retain the transparency of the neat polymethylmethacrylate resin. Light transmission of the obtained chitin/PMMA biocomposite was 90.2%, in comparison to the neat resin, which was 92.6%. Mechanical property tests showed that chitin nanofibers significantly improved the tensile strengths and Young's modulus of the neat PMMA, which increased from 43.8 MPa to 102 MPa and 1.6 GPa to 3.43 GPa, respectively. PMMA resin was found to be well dispersed in the biocomposite and had little effect on the tensile properties of the material. The properties mentioned above qualify the chitin nanofiber as a green and high-performance candidate having potential to be applied in next-generation optical electronic and building systems as a commercially available material.
