This study investigated the biomass/lipid production, nutrient removal and fatty acid composition of an isolated mixotrophic microalga (Chlorella sp. G-9) cultured in simulated wastewater with different TOC/TN ratio. As the TOC/TN ratio of wastewater increased from 0 to 24, the growth rate of Chlorella sp. G-9 increased gradually, but did not increase further at 30. Nutrient removal was related to microalgae growth. In the wastewater with TOC/TN ratio of 24 and 30, 99.58% and 99.61% nitrogen was removed, respectively. In conditions of initial TOC/TN ratios of 24 and 30, Chlorella sp. G-9 could accumulate lipid as high as 35.3% and 36.5%, respectively. The corresponding lipid productivities were 34.2 and 32.6 mg L−1 d−1, respectively, which were 13.7 and 13.0 times higher than those in photoautotrophic condition. Increasing the initial TOC/TN ratio of the wastewater could slightly increase the saturated degree in fatty acid, thereby improving the stability of biodiesel.

This study presents the novel composite material TMCC/PAA/SA@Fe(TPSA), a bacteria immobilized carrier for use in bioreactor systems to enhance the simultaneous removal efficiency of nitrate, Ni(II) and phosphorus. The influence of various operational factors were evaluated on the performance of nitrate, phosphorus and Ni(II) removal. Results demonstrate that under optimum conditions of an hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8 h and pH 7.0, nitrate and phosphorus removal reached nearly 100% and 61.7%, respectively. When the initial Ni(II) concentration was 1 mg/L, approximately 100% Ni(II) removal efficiency was achieved. Furthermore, the morphology and components of the TPSA immobilized bacterial pellets were analyzed to investigate the mechanism of simultaneous nitrate, Ni(II) and phosphorus removal. Microbial metabolism was more active in the experimental reactor compared with control, although high concentrations of Ni(II) could inhibit bacterial activity.

An immobilized biofilm reactor (IBR) was established to treat nitrate using different electron donors. A novel material, Fe3O4@Cu/PVA, was synthesized as an adsorbent and bacterial immobilized carrier in the reactor. The optimum condition of nitrate removal were pH 7.0, hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 h under autotrophic and mixotrophic conditions. Strain H-117 in the mixotrophic reactor had better adaptability to changes in the initial pH. The metabolism in the mixotrophic reactor was more vigorous than that in autotrophic reactor. The microbial communities and structures were evaluated to determine the nitrate removal mechanisms in this system. Microbial analyses demonstrated that different electron donor could influence the bacterial abundance and species in the IBR system. Proteobacteria was the most dominant phylum in all IBRs and accounted for more than 50% of the total phyla. Pseudomonas and Rhizobium were the dominant contributor to the effective removal of nitrate in the IBRs.

The chlorella-based microalgal residue (AR) was tested as a novel precursor for preparing activated carbons. A combined carbonization-activation process with flowing N2 and CO2 gases was used to prepare the carbon materials at the activation temperatures of 800-1000 °C and the residence times of 0-30 min in this work. The elemental contents, pore properties and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of the resulting activated carbons have been performed. The results showed that activation temperature may be the most important parameter for determining their pore properties. The maximal Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and total pore volume of the resulting activated carbon, which was produced at the activation temperature of 950 °C with the residence time of 30 min, were 840 m(2)/g and 0.46 cm(3)/g, respectively. More interestingly, the resulting activated carbons have significant nitrogen contents of 3.6-9.6 wt%, which make them lower carbon contents (i.e., 54.6-68.4 wt%) than those of commercial activated carbons.

In this study, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to analyze the pyrolytic bio-oils and gas fractions derived from the pyrolysis of industrial sewage sludges using induction-heating technique. The liquid products were obtained from the cryogenic condensation of the devolatilization fraction in a nitrogen atmosphere using a heating rate of 300 degrees C/min ranging from 25 to 500 degrees C. The analytical results showed that the pyrolysis bio-oils were very complex mixtures of organic compounds and contained a lot of nitrogenated and/or oxygenated compounds such as aliphatic hydrocarbons, phenols, pyridines, pyrroles, amines, ketones, and so on. These organic hydrocarbons containing nitrogen and/or oxygen should originate from the protein and nucleic acid textures of the microbial organisms present in the sewage sludge. The non-condensable devolatilization fractions were also composed of nitrogenated and oxygenated compounds, but contained small fractions of phenols, 1H-indoles, and fatty carboxylic acids. On the other hand, the compositions in the non-condensable gas products were principally carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane analyzed by gas chromatography-thermal conductivity detector (GC-TCD).

With the application of induction-heating, the pyrolytic experiments have been carried out for three sewage sludges from the food processing factories in an externally heated fixed-bed reactor. The thermochemical characteristics of sludge samples were first analyzed. The results indicated that the calorific value had about 15 MJ/kg on an average, suggesting that it had a potential for biomass energy source. However, its nitrogen concentration was relatively high. From the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) curves, it showed that the pyrolysis reaction can be almost finished in the temperature range of 450-750 degrees C. The yields of resulting liquid and char products from the pyrolysis of sewage sludge were discussed for examining the effects of pyrolysis temperature (500-800 degrees C), heating rate (200-500 degrees C/min), and holding time (1-8 min). Overall, the variation of yield was not so significant in the experimental conditions for three sewage sludges. All results of the resulting liquid products analyzed by elemental analyzer, pH meter, Karl-Fischer moisture titrator and bomb calorimeter were in consistence with those analyses by FTIR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the pyrolysis liquid products contained large amounts of water (>73% by weight) mostly derived from the bound water in the biosludge feedstocks and the condensation reactions during the pyrolysis reaction, and fewer contents of oxygenated hydrocarbons composing of carbonyl and nitrogen-containing groups, resulting in low pH and low calorific values.

The aim of this work was to prepare the bio-crudes from agricultural wastes (i.e., rice straw, rice husk, sugarcane bagasse and coconut shell) by using induction-heating pyrolysis at specified conditions. The quantitative analysis of 21 priority pollutant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in bio-crudes examined using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) revealed that the PAHs in bio-crudes were primarily dominant in the low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs, including naphthalene (1.10-2.45 mg/L) and acenaphthene (0.72-7.61 mg/L). However, by considering carcinogenic potency, the bio-crudes from rice husk and sugarcane bagasse contained higher contents of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) (0.52 and 0.92 mg/L, respectively) as compared to those from rice straw and coconut shell.

A series of pyrolysis oils and chars were prepared from agricultural by-product rice husk by the lab-scale fast pyrolysis system using induction heating. The effect of process parameters such as pyrolysis temperature, heating rate, holding time, nitrogen gas flow rate, condensation temperature and particle size on the pyrolysis product yields and their chemical compositions was examined. The maximum oil yield of over 40% was obtained at the proper pyrolysis conditions. The chemical characterization by elemental, calorific, spectroscopic and chromatographic studies showed that the pyrolysis oils derived from the fast pyrolysis of rice husk contained considerable amounts of carbonyl groups and/or oxygen content, resulting in low pH and low heating values.
