High-solid anaerobic digestion (AD) faces the problems of easy acidification and low methane production efficiency. In this study, activated carbon (AC)-enhanced direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) was investigated to overcome such problems. Results showed the conversion of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) into methane rate was increased with AC addition, which led improved methane production efficiency. The methane yields from the early AD stage improved by 124.0–146.3% with AC addition. The T80 shortened by 8–9 days with AC addition. The relative abundances of Geobacter, Syntrophomonas and Methanosaeta that associated with DIET improved for 63.65%, 256.3% and 4.35% by AC addition, which reflected the enhanced DIET with AC addition. The redox activity of AC might be responsible for the enhanced DIET. This study would advance the understanding of DIET and provide a potential solution to the problems existed in high-solid AD.

Biorefinery of Ramulus mori with lower energy consumption through improved enzyme and pretreatment strategies was reported. Directed evolution and saturation mutagenesis were used for the modification of xylanase, the yield of fermentable sugars and the degree of synergy (DS) were determined for different pretreatment (seawater/non-seawater) and enzyme treatment groups (xylanase/cellulase/co-treatment). The dominant mutant I133A/Q143Y of Bispora sp. xylanase XYL10C_ΔN was obtained with improved specific activity (1860 U/mg), catalytic efficiency (1150 mL/s∙mg) at 40 °C, and thermostability (T50 increased by 7 °C). With the pretreatment of seawater immersion, the highest yield of fermentable sugars for Ramulus mori at 40 °C reached 199 μmol/g when hydrolyzed with cellulase and I133A/Q143Y, with the highest DS of 2.6; this was 4.5-fold that of the group hydrolyzed by cellulase alone with non-seawater pretreatment. Thus, bioconversion of reducing sugar from Ramulus mori was improved significantly at lower temperatures, which provides an efficient and energy-saving way for biofuel production.

High efficiency of microalgal growth and CO2 fixation in a Photobioreactors (PBRs)/Raceway circulating (PsRC) system combined with alkaline-CO2 capturing medium and operation was established and investigated. Compared with a pH 6 medium, the average biomass productivity of Chlorella sp. AT1 cultured in a pH 11 medium at 2 L min−1 circulation rate for 7 days increased by about 2-fold to 0.346 g L−1 d−1. The maximum amount of CO2 fixation and CO2 utilization efficiency of Chlorella sp. AT1 could be obtained at a PBRs to Raceway ratio of 1:10 in an indoor-simulated PsRC system. A similar result was also shown in an outdoor PsRC system with a 10-ton scale for microalgal cultivation. Under the appropriate circulation rate, the stable growth performance of Chlorella sp. AT1 cultured by long-term semi-continuous operation in the 10-ton outdoor PsRC system was observed, and the total amount of CO2 fixation was approximately 1.2 kg d−1 with 50% CO2 utilization efficiency.

An alkali-tolerant Chlorella sp. AT1 mutant strain was screened by NTG mutagenesis. The strain grew well in pH 6–11 media, and the optimal pH for growth was 10. The CO 2 utilization efficiencies of Chlorella sp. AT1 cultured with intermittent 10% CO 2 aeration for 10, 20 and 30 min at 3-h intervals were approximately 80, 42 and 30%, respectively. In alkaline medium (pH = 11) with intermittent 10% CO 2 aeration for 30 min at 3-, 6- and 12-h intervals, the medium pH gradually changed to 10, and the biomass productivities of Chlorella sp. AT1 were 0.987, 0.848 and 0.710 g L −1 d −1 , respectively. When Chlorella sp. AT1 was aerated with 10% CO 2 intermittently for 30 min at 3-h intervals in semi-continuous cultivation for 21 days, the biomass concentration and biomass productivity were 4.35 g L −1 and 0.726 g L −1 d −1 , respectively. Our results show that CO 2 utilization efficiency can be markedly increased by intermittent CO 2 aeration and alkaline media as a CO 2 -capturing strategy for alkali-tolerant microalga cultivation.

A bioflocculant-producing bacterium was isolated from soil and identified as Serratia ficaria . Using optimized culture conditions a flocculating activity of 95.4% was obtained. It was found to be effective for flocculation of a kaolin suspension over weakly acidic pH (5–7); divalent cations (Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ) enhanced the flocculating activity, while the co-presence of Al 3+ and Fe 3+ resulted the negative effect. Measurements of zeta potential revealed that charge neutralization played an important role in the flocculation. It could flocculate a variety of real wastewaters, including river water, brewery wastewater, meat processing wastewater and soy sauce brewing wastewater. The bioflocculant was also used to treat pulp effluent, and the removal rate of color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were up to 99.9% and 72.1%, respectively, which were better than traditional chemical flocculants.

Batch experiments were conducted to study the biosorption characteristics of a cationic dye, Malachite Green (MG), onto aerobic granules. Effects of pH, aerobic granule dosage, contact time and solution temperature on MG biosorption by aerobic granules were evaluated. Simultaneity the thermodynamic analysis was also performed. The results showed that alkaline pH was favorable for the biosorption of MG and chemisorption seemed to play a major role in the biosorption process. Kinetic studies indicate that MG biosorption on aerobic granules in the system follows the pseudo-second order kinetics. The equilibrium time was 60 min for both 50 and 60 mg/L and 120 min for both 70 and 80 mg/L MG concentrations, respectively. Moreover, the experimental equilibrium data have been analyzed using the linearized forms of Langmuir, Freundlich, and Redlich-Peterson isotherms and the Langmuir isotherm was found to provide the best theoretical correlation of the experimental data for the biosorption of MG. The monolayer biosorption (saturation) capacities were determined to be 56.8 mg of MG per gram of aerobic granules at 30 degrees C. Thermodynamic analysis show that biosorption follows an endothermic path of the positive value of Delta H( composite function) and spontaneous with negative value of Delta G( composite function).

Aerobic granular sludge was cultivated in a sequencing batch reactor fed with brewery wastewater. After nine-week operation, stable granules with sizes of 2–7 mm were obtained. With the granulation, the SVI value decreased from 87.5 to 32 mL/g. The granular sludge had an excellent settling ability with the settling velocity over 91 m/h. Aerobic granular sludge exhibited good performance in the organics and nitrogen removal from brewery wastewater. After granulation, high and stable removal efficiencies of 88.7% CODt, 88.9% NH 4 + –N were achieved at the volumetric exchange ratio of 50% and cycle duration of 6 h. The average CODt and CODs of the effluent were 212 and 134 mg/L, respectively, and the average effluent ammonium concentration was less than 14.4 mg/L. Nitrogen was removed due to nitrification and simultaneous denitrification in the inner core of granules.
