The high-purity compounds (e.g., sugars and phenols) are important raw materials and chemicals, which can be produced by biomass pyrolysis. However, the direct biomass pyrolysis produces complex compounds and thus inhibiting its large-scale utilization. To increase the yield and enrichment of sugars and phenols, a green coupling process based on ethanol-Fenton pretreatment combined with fast pyrolysis is firstly proposed. The bamboo was effectively separated into the ethanol-Fenton pretreated bamboo (EF-bamboo), lignin-rich fractions, and hemicellulose-degradation intermixtures with the massive removal of inorganic metals via this process. Compared with the fast pyrolysis of raw bamboo, the levoglucosan yield of EF-bamboo increased 5.4 times and the enrichment of sugars improved from 7.6% to 59.7%. Similarly, the yield of monophenols from lignin-rich fractions increased around 0.6 times and the enrichment of monophenols increased from 25.7% to 63.5%. This work provides a green and efficient route to produce high-yield and high-enrichment sugars and phenols.

Combining torrefaction with fast pyrolysis is an achievable route for producing long-chain ether precursors. The results of structural characterization for native and torrefied holocellulose indicated that with increasing torrefaction temperature, the crystallinity index (CrI) decreased slightly and then sharply increased; hydroxyls, O-acetyl branches, ether bond and β-1,4-glycosidic bond were eliminated but carbonyls increased. Maximum mass loss rate and apparent activation energy increased after torrefaction. With an increase in torrefaction temperature, gaseous yield continuously dropped, and liquid product yield climbed to the highest point of 49.04% for holocellulose torrefied at 240 °C (240CS). Torrefaction was unfavorable for the production of small-molecule gases. The bio-oil analysis demonstrated that the yield of acetic acid decreased from 6.35% to 1.43% with torrefaction temperature increasing from 105 °C to 260 °C. Significantly, yields of targeted compounds were dramatically improved after torrefaction, and 240CS afforded the maximum carbon yield of 14.79%.

Various phytoremediation residues (PMRs), including Brassica napus L. (BN), Pennisetum sinese (PS) and Lolium perenne L.(LP), were pyrolyzed at 400, 500, 600 and 700 °C, respectively. A series of sequential and single extractions were employed to analyze the chemical speciation and potential environmental risk of Cadmium (Cd) in different phytoremediation residues-derived biochars (PMBs). The results showed that the exchangeable Cd fraction decreased but the residual Cd fraction increased, indicating the inhibition of bioavailability of Cd and low potential ecological risk index of PMBs. When the temperature was over 600 °C, the Cd in biochar was acceptable to the environment and the leaching concentration of Cd extracted by the three extraction methods (distilled water, SPLP and TCLP) were all under the standard limit. Findings from this study illustrated that the treatment of pyrolysis was feasible for the three kinds of PMRs at 600 °C with acceptable environment risk.

Catalyst deactivation is the main reason for low petrochemical yield in catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of biomass. ZSM-5 catalysts modified by chemical liquid deposition (CLD) and acid dealumination (AD) were prepared to improve petrochemical yields for CFP of pinewood. The results showed that CLD by SiO2 led to the coverage of strong acid sites, while AD favored the removal of superficial acid sites. CFP of pinewood showed that the relative area ratio of BTX was boosted by 37.2% and 30.4% over modified ZSM-5 catalysts by CLD and AD, respectively. The yield of indenes and naphthalenes which were important precursors of heavy coke decreased sharply. Considering environmental cost and catalytic performance, CLD seems to be a preferable modification method over ZSM-5 in the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass for petrochemicals.

Catalytic co-pyrolysis of black-liquor lignin and waste plastics (polyethylene, PE; polypropylene PP; polystyrene, PS) was conducted in a fluidized bed. The effects of temperature, plastic to lignin ratio, catalyst and plastic types on product distributions were studied. Both aromatic and olefin yields increased with increasing PE proportion. Petrochemical yield of co-pyrolysis of PE and lignin was LOSA-1 > spent FCC > Gamma-Al2O3 > sand. The petrochemical yield with LOSA-1 is 43.9% which is more than two times of that without catalyst. The feedstock for co-pyrolysis with lignin is polystyrene > polyethylene > polypropylene. Catalytic co-pyrolysis of black-liquor lignin with PS produced the maximum aromatic yield (55.3%), while co-pyrolysis with PE produced the maximum olefin yield (13%).

A novel reactor, named internally interconnected fluidized bed (IIFB), was specially designed for catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of straw biomass. Catalytic characteristics of four types of catalysts (ZSM-5, LOSA-1, Gamma-Al2O3 and spent FCC catalysts) for producing aromatics and olefins were investigated in this reactor. The results show that IIFB reactor can realize CFP process. The maximum carbon yields of aromatics (12.8%) and C2-C4 olefins (10.5%) were obtained with ZSM-5. ZSM-5 shows the highest selectivity of naphthalene (12.1%), whereas spent FCC catalyst presents the highest selectivity of benzene (45.5%). The selectivity of ethylene and propylene are equal in the present of ZSM-5 and LOSA-1. Gamma-Al2O3 and spent FCC catalysts show a higher selectivity of ethylene than that of propylene. This paper provides a new reactor for CFP process and some suggestions for choosing catalyst.
