A synergistic pretreatment that realizing effective fractionation and targeted valorization can guarantee the implementability to future biorefinery scenario. In the present study, a stepwise approach using hydrothermal and deep eutectic solvents (DES) pretreatment was developed to preferentially dissociate hemicelluloses and further remove lignin from poplar, while retaining a cellulose-rich substrate that can be easily digested via enzymatic saccharification to obtain glucose. Results showed that the hydrothermal filtrate is mainly composed of xylooligosaccharide (XOS), monosaccharides, byproducts, and xylan-type hemicelluloses, which have homogenous structures and uniform molecular weights distribution as well as excellent antioxidant activity. Subsequent DES pretreatment further removed the lignin barriers, leading to a remarkable increase in the saccharification efficiency from 15.72% to 96.33% under optimum conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis. In short, the integrated pretreatment is effective for dissociating and chemical conversion of poplar wood, which was reasonable to promote the frontier of highly available biorefinery.

In the present work, palm wood was pretreated using hydrothermal technique in conjunction with chemical method for removal of lignin. Pretreated palm wood was subjected to hydrolysis using Trichoderma reesei MTCC 4876. Subsequently bioethanol was produced using palm wood hydrolysate by Kluveromyces marxianus MTCC 1389. RSM was used to identify the non-linear relationship and optimize various process parameters such as parameters such as pH, temperature, agitation rate, substrate concentration and inoculum size for bioethanol production. ANN constructed with 5-2-1 topology was also used to optimize process parameters. The experimental bioethanol yield of 22.90 g/l was obtained at ANN optimum conditions of temperature 45 degrees C, agitation rate 156 rpm, pH 5, substrate concentration 8% (v/v) and inoculum size 3.2% (v/v).

Wood waste-derived biochar with tunable carbon structure and surface functionality has a great potential for various environmental applications and circular economy; however, a holistic understanding on the application-oriented production of high-efficacy biochar is lacking. Thus, the co-impacts of different pyrolysis conditions (temperature and duration) and activation methods (steam, CO2, and acid pretreatment) on the biochar properties were first investigated. A temperature of 650 ℃ was effective in forming carbonized structure in biochar, while 750 ℃ was critical for the porous structure development. A longer pyrolysis duration (>60 min) enhanced the pore volume without compromising the yield. The activated biochar exhibited a larger pore volume (2.1- to 2.9-fold of pristine biochar) for potential high-end emerging applications. The acid pretreatment effectively removed dissolved organic carbon and most metals from the biochar. This study provides an essential guidance on the fit-for-purpose designs of biochar production conditions for sustainable wood waste management.

Char-based catalyst has a promising application for biomass thermal conversion technology. In this work, Fe-Ni/Activated Char (AC) catalyst was prepared by impregnation method and used for the catalytic gasification of pine wood to obtain syngas. Further, the catalytic performance of Fe-Ni/AC was established by doing a comparative study of catalytic gasification of different biomass feedstocks. The results showed that under the catalysis of Fe-Ni/AC, the increase of gasification temperature was beneficial to increase gas yield, but not conducive to regulate the H2/CO ratio of syngas. The steam flow rate was directly related to the catalytic effect of Fe-Ni. The H2/CO ratio of syngas could reach 1.97 under the optimal conditions. Fe-Ni/AC had different catalytic effects on different biomass feedstocks, with the best for pine wood and the worst for cotton stalk, indicating that gasification intermediates of pine wood were difficult to decompose and depended more on catalyst.

The feasibility of producing polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) from pretreated waste wood hydrolysate and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from sewage fermented products as co-substrate feedstock through mixed microbial cultures (MMCs) process was explored. The results showed that the addition of co-substrate shortened the cycle of PHA reaching the maximum and increased the proportion of 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV) monomer. Compared with N-excess supply, almost 1.6 times increased PHA accumulation was realized under N-limitation, and simultaneously the highest proportion of 3HV monomer with 51% was also obtained. Additionally, PHA production in S1400 reactor reached a maximum value of about 3088 mg COD/L with culture time to 36 h. The microbial community also displayed a high diversity, which was composed of 65 bacterial genera. It is a novel attempt to accumulate PHA from pretreated waste wood hydrolysate and VFAs co-substrate through MMCs, providing an effective green approach to reduce its expensive cost and achieve mass production.

Effects of the addition of 2-naphthol and 2-naphthol-7-sulfonate on the dilute acid pretreatment of mixed wood sawdust were investigated, respectively. Compared to 2-naphthol, 2-naphtnol-7-sulfonate was more effective to enhance delignification and facilitate the enzymatic hydrolysis. The 72 h hydrolysis yield was improved by 47.8% for 2-naphthol-7-sulfone, while only 9.1% was observed for 2-naphthol. The surface charges, enzyme adsorption, and cellulose accessibility of dilute acid pretreated substrates with or without naphthol derivatives were examined. The improved enzymatic hydrolysis by adding 2-naphthol-7-sulfonate was ascribed to the higher negative surface charges, the lower enzyme non-productive binding, and the higher cellulose accessibility of pretreated substrates. Additionally, the HSQC NMR and 31P NMR analysis were carried out on both decomposed lignins and residual bulk lignins. It indicated that the addition of the naphthol derivatives during pretreatment could suppress the lignin repolymerization, which further mitigated the inhibition of residual lignins on enzymatic hydrolysis.

The catalytic activity of engineered biochar was scrutinized for generation of glucose and hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from starch-rich food waste (bread, rice, and spaghetti). The biochar catalysts were synthesized by chemical activation of pinewood sawdust with phosphoric acid at 400–600 °C. Higher activation temperatures enhanced the development of porosity and acidity (characterized by C O PO3 and C PO3 surface groups), which imparted higher catalytic activity of H3PO4-activated biochar towards starch hydrolysis and fructose dehydration. Positive correlations were observed between HMF selectivity and ratio of mesopore to micropore volume, and between fructose conversion and total acid density. High yields of glucose (86.5 Cmol% at 150 °C, 20 min) and HMF (30.2 Cmol% at 180 °C, 20 min) were produced from rice starch and bread waste, respectively, over H3PO4-activated biochar. These results highlighted the potential of biochar catalyst in biorefinery as an emerging application of engineered biochar.

This study aims to explore distinct bacterial strains from wood-feeding termites and to construct novel bacterial consortium for improving the methane yield during anaerobic digestion by degrading birchwood sawdust (BSD) and removing creosote (CRO) compounds simultaneously. A novel bacterial consortium CTB-4 which stands for the molecularly identified species Burkholderia sp., Xanthomonas sp., Shewanella sp., and Pseudomonas mosselii was successfully developed. The CTB-4 consortium showed high efficiency in the removal of naphthalene and phenol. It also revealed reduction in lignin, hemicellulose, and cellulose by 19.4, 52.5, and 76.8%, respectively. The main metabolites after the CRO degradation were acetic acid, succinate, pyruvate, and acetaldehyde. Pretreatment of treated BSD mixed with CRO enhanced the total methane yield (162 L/kg VS) by 82.7% and biomass reduction by 54.7% compared to the untreated substrate. CRO showed a toxicity decrease of >90%, suggesting the efficiency of constructed bacterial consortia in bioremediation and biofuel production.

Lignocellulose biodegradation is limited because of its recalcitrant structure particularly when polluted by toxic and carcinogenic compounds such as creosote oil (CRO). As far as we know, this might be the first report that explores the biodegradation of creosote treated wood (CTW) to serve biomethane production. Two novel CTW-degrading microbial consortia, designated as CTW-1 and CTW-2, were screened and constructed to enhance methane production from CRO-treated pine sawdust. After 12 days of biological pretreatment by CTW-1 and CTW-2, a significant reduction in lignocellulosic content of CTW was recorded; estimated as 49 and 43%, respectively. More than 64 and 91% of cumulative biogas and methane yields were obtained from biodegraded CTW over control. Ecotoxicity of treated and untreated CTW was compared by Microtox test. The biodegraded CTW hydrolysates showed a toxicity decrease of more than 80%, suggesting the promising role of constructed microbial consortia for biofuel production and bioremediation.

The aim of this work was to study the degradation of lignin in raw wood via pretreatment with heteropoly acids as substitutes for traditional H2SO4 in γ-valerolactone/water. By optimizing catalyst concentration, reaction time and temperature, the optimal lignin degradation conditions are obtained (130 °C, 3 h and 20 mM silicotungstic acid). SEM and FTIR measurements demonstrated the efficient lignin degradation ability of HPAs in the GVL/H2O solvent, with negligible damage to cellulose within the raw wood. Furthermore, an elaborated enzymatic hydrolysis study of the thus obtained cellulosic feedstock revealed its suitability for enzymatic digestion, with great potential as starting material for the production of fermentable sugar from biomass in future biorefinery applications.

Recycled wood of two grades (A and B) and spruce were converted on bench (100 o.d. g) and pilot (100 o.d. kg) scales to monosugars, lignin and lignosulfonates using SO2-Ethanol-Water (AVAP®) technology. After digestion, C6 and C5 sugars were recovered at 98–100% and 87–99% for Wood A and Spruce, respectively, while the values for Wood B were 92% and 74–87%. Cellulose was hydrolysed to glucose at 90% or higher using enzyme charge of 7.1 FPU/g glucan. Hemicellulosic sugars were autohydrolyzed to 95–100% monosugars. At bench scale, monosaccharide yield was 609, 561 and 688 kg (hydrous) per BDT biomass for Wood A, Wood B and Spruce, respectively. Corresponding water insoluble lignin yield was 157, 148 and 189 kg per BDT biomass. The preliminary techno-economic evaluation revealed that conversion of recycled wood to sugars using AVAP® fractionation platform results in higher profitability in comparison to virgin wood.

Due to the depletion of fossil fuels and their environmental issues, it is necessary to find energy resources which are renewable. Biomass becomes promising feedstock for bio-fuel production. The aim of this study is to investigate thermal decomposition behavior and the effect of third component on the binary mixture pyrolysis using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Experiments were carried out at heating rates of 10, 20 and 40°C/min from ambient temperature to 600°C. Two divided groups of peaks were observed in DTG curve of tertiary mixture which the first one was corresponded to microalgae and wood and the second one was belonged to polymer. It is stated that microalgae and wood can improve the degradation process while polymer can delay the decomposition process of mixture. Mentioned positive effect of microalgae and wood could be related to main decomposition temperature and component of microalgae and wood. On the other hand, polymer reduces weight loss of binary mixture and has negative effect of it. The kinetics analysis showed that activation energy (E) and pre-exponential factor (A) of tertiary mixture was slightly lower than that of microalgae-polymer mixture which had the lowest E and A.

Thermal decomposition behavior and kinetics of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, wood and polypropylene were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Experiments were carried out at heating rates of 10, 20 and 40°C/min from ambient temperature to 600°C. The results show that pyrolysis process of C. vulgaris and wood can be divided into three stages while pyrolysis of polypropylene occurs almost totally in one step. It is shown that wood can delay the pyrolysis of microalgae while microalgae can accelerate the pyrolysis of wood. The existence of polymer during the pyrolysis of microalgae or wood will lead to two divided groups of peaks in DTG curve of mixtures. The results showed that interaction is inhibitive rather than synergistic during the decomposition process of materials. Kinetics of process is studied by the Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO). The average E values obtained from FWO and KAS methods were 131.228 and 142.678kJ/mol, respectively.

The aim of this work was to compare the two most common hydrothermal pre-treatments for wood - mild steam explosion and hot water extraction - both with the prospect of enabling extraction of hemicelluloses and facilitating further processing. Although both involve autohydrolysis of the lignocellulosic tissue, they are performed under different conditions: the most prominent difference is the rapid, disintegrating, discharge employed in the steam explosion opening up the structure. In this comparative study, the emphasis was placed on local composition of the pre-treated wood chips (of industrially relevant size). The results show that short hot water extraction treatments lead to significant variations in the local composition within the wood chips, while steam explosion accomplishes a comparably more even removal of hemicelluloses due to the advective mass transport during the explosion step.

The combination of autohydrolysis and ionic liquid microwave treatments of eucalyptus wood have been studied to facilitate sugar production in a subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis step. Three autohydrolysis conditions (150 °C, 175 °C and 200 °C) in combination with two ionic liquid temperatures (80 °C and 120 °C) were compared in terms of chemical composition, enzymatic digestibility and sugar production. Morphology was measured (using SEM) and the biomass surface was visualized with confocal fluorescence microscopy. The synergistic cooperation of both treatments was demonstrated, enhancing cellulose accessibility. At intermediate autohydrolysis conditions (175 °C) and low ionic liquid temperature (80 °C), a glucan digestibility of 84.4% was obtained. Using SEM micrographs, fractal dimension (as a measure of biomass complexity) and lacunarity (as a measure of homogeneity) were calculated before and after pretreatment. High fractals dimensions and low lacunarities correspond to morphologically complex and homogeneous samples, that are better digested by enzyme cocktails.

International audience; the aim of this work was to demonstrate the feasibility of second-generation bioethanol production using for the first time a sawmill mixed feedstock comprising four softwood species, representative of biomass resource in auvergne-rhone-alpes region (france). the feedstock was subjected to a microwave-assisted water/ethanol organosolv pretreatment. the investigation focused on enzymatic hydrolysis of this pretreated sawmill feedstock (psf) using cellic® ctec2 as the enzyme, followed by fermentation of the resulting sugar solution using saccharomyces cerevisiae strain. the cellulose-rich psf with 71% w/w cellulose content presented high saccharification yields (up to 80%), which made it perfect for subsequent fermentation; this yield was predicted vs. time up to 5.2% w/v psf loading using a mathematical model fitted only on data at 1.5%. finally, high psf loading (7.5%) and scaleup were shown to impair the saccharification yield, but alcoholic fermentation could still be carried out up to 80% of the theoretical glucose-to-ethanol conversion yield.

Simultaneous enzymatic saccharification and comminution (SESC) was used for large-scale anaerobic digestion of wood lignocellulose to generate methane and unmodified lignin. During SESC, 10% aqueous mixture of powdered debarked wood from various species was subjected to bead milling with hydrolytic enzymes to generate particles below 1 μm. This slurry was directly used as a cosubstrate for anaerobic digestion in a 500 L stirred-tank reactor. Temperature and hydraulic retention time (HRT) were maintained at 50 °C and 30 days, respectively. At stable operation periods, an average yield of 224 L of methane per kg of cedar was attained. Comparable yields were achieved with red pine, elm, oak, and cedar bark. High-throughput microbial analysis established the presence of a relevant community to support the elevated level of methane production. The stability of the unmodified lignin in anaerobic digestion was also confirmed, allowing for its recovery as an important by-product.

This study categorized different pretreatment methods into mild (below 120 °C), normal (120–200 °C) and extreme conditions (above 200 °C) for selective approach with efficient wood hydrolysis for direct market applications. The model two-step strategy of selective normal-hydrolysis: steam explosion (170 °C for 30 min) with concentrating normal-hydrolysis: organosolv at (160 °C for 20 min) on hard/softwood will delivery individual fractions of hemicellulose, lignin, and cellulose with recovery rate above 95%. The first step releases C5 sugars with a recovery rate of 80% followed by the second step for C6 sugars with 95% rate and direct use of reduced sugars into C5 and C6 value-added products. The categorized conditions will ease the selection of the pretreatment method for the wood type and model strategy will increase the hydrolysis rate with greater simplicity and validity. The integrated wood biorefinery with two-step treatment is an in-house and closed-loop with endless industrial applications.

Production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) via anaerobic fermentation is a potential alternative responding to the current demand for sustainable development to replace conventional fossil routes. In this study, the dynamics of VFAs production and microbial community succession from activated sludge using pretreated waste wood feedstock as carbon sources was reported. VFAs production achieved to the highest value of about 3000 mg COD/L at 10 g COD/L. The maximum acidification rate was determined as 45%. Meanwhile, VFAs composition proportion can be regulated by adjusting pH. Microbial community analysis indicated that Corynebacterium, Actinomyces and Bacteroides were the dominant bacteria genus. In terms of waste wood feedstock conversion, 0.32 g of VFAs was obtained per 1 g of wood powder. The results demonstrated that pretreated wood followed by the acidogenic sludge co-fermentation could contribute to provide an effective green method for developing biomass into value-added chemicals.

The aim of this work was to study the sedimentary substances formed on the surface of auto-hydrolyzed wood chips. And its potential effect on the subsequent chemical pulping was then investigated by the analysis of surface morphology, benzene-alcohol extractive, absorbability and kraft pulping of wood chips hydrolyzed. The results showed that sediments on the surface of auto-hydrolyzed wood chips were microspheric and the amount of them increased with intensifying the severity of treatment. The benzene-alcohol extractives and lignin content in the extractives increased from 1.36% and 16.42% in the control sample to 9.42% and 47.68% in the hydrolyzed wood chips at the P-factor of 808. Esterification of lignocellulosic biomass driven by dry ball-milling suffered from agglomeration of lignocellulosic matters during milling process. In this study, esterification of waste mulberry wood (MW) was carried out by wet ball-milling with water and tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF) to prepare all-wood-plastic composites. Under the same condition, the esterification of MW by wet ball-milling with TBAF presented higher efficiency than that without TBAF which was attributed to catalytic function of F− ions meanwhile the binding of TBA+ to cellulose fibrils hindered the compaction of fibrillated fragments. Pre-ball-milling of MW for 4.0 h apparently promoted the esterification with succinic anhydride. All-wood-plastic composites prepared after 7.0 h succinoylation demonstrated prominent mechanical performance due to strong adhesion of fragments and matrix. This study is supposed to provide an environment-friendly method for efficient conversion of waste lignocellulosic biomass.

A promising approach to help offset production costs for the cellulosic ethanol industry is to improve ethanol productivity while simultaneously generating value-added by-products. This study reports integration of an advanced fermentation approach (self-cycling fermentation) with the production of cellulose nanocrystals. Specifically, wood pulp was enzymatically hydrolyzed to yield dissolved sugars, which were fed to a self-cycling fermentation system for ethanol production, and residual solids were used for cellulose nanocrystals production via acid hydrolysis. Self-cycling fermentation achieved stable ethanol production for 10 cycles with significantly greater productivity than batch operation: ethanol volumetric productivity increased by 63–95% and annual ethanol productivity by 96 ± 5%. Additionally, the enzyme hydrolysis approach employed did not impede ethanol fermentation, and the cellulose nanocrystals generated displayed properties consistent with previous studies. Taken together, these results highlight the potential of this co-production strategy to produce both cellulosic ethanol and cellulose nanocrystals from a single feedstock.

In the present investigation, the adsorptive removal of the antibiotic drug oxytetracycline (OTC) and toxic heavy metal cadmium (Cd) from aqueous solution was carried out using forest and wood-processing residues. Numerous biochars were prepared using different chemical agents (H 3 PO 4 , H 2 SO 4 , NaOH and KOH) and pyrolysis times and temperatures. Several elemental, chemical and structural characterizations were performed. The optimum conditions for pyrolysis to enable the production of biochars with well-developed porosity was 600 °C for 1 h, for both residues. The adsorption process using selected activated biochars was optimized with respect to reaction time, pH, temperature and initial load of pollutants. Under optimized operating conditions, and based on equilibrium modelling data, the biochars which showed the highest removal efficiencies of OTC and cadmium were “5 M H 3 PO 4 forest” (263.8 mg/g) and “1 M NaOH forest” (79.30 mg/g), respectively. Compared to adsorbents reported in the literature, the efficiencies of those biochars are highly competitive.

In the present study Trichoderma reesei, a wood isolate can yield high biomass quantities up to 30g/L, yielding 32.4% of lipids of dry cell weight (DCW). Biodiesel production from Trichoderma reesei involved simple unit operations like filtration and ultrasonication, yet giving good lipid yield with desirable bio-diesel properties. Optimization of ultrasonication conditions was done to ensure maximum lipid extraction. SEM analysis of ultrasonicated samples showed distinct breakage of fungal hyphae. The lipids were found to contain 49.7% saturated fatty acids. Transesterification using chemical and biological catalysts were compared and 96.09% efficiency was observed for lipase-catalyzed transesterification. The bio-diesel properties satisfied ASTM and EN specifications with cetane number: 53.1, iodine value: 63.34g, saponification value: 235.07mg KOH/g, cold flow plugging point: 9.13°C.

Organic compound rich torrefaction condensate, owing to their high water content and acidic nature, have yet to be exploited for practical application. In this study, microbial conversion of torrefaction condensate from pine wood through anaerobic batch digestion (AD) to produce methane was evaluated. Torrefaction condensate exhibited high methane potentials in the range of 430–492 mL/g volatile solids (VS) and 430–460 mL/g VS under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions, respectively. Owing to the changes in the composition, the methane yields differed with the torrefaction condensates produced at different temperatures (225, 275 and 300 °C), with a maximum of 492 ± 18 mL/g VS with the condensate produced at 300 °C under mesophilic condition. The cyclic batch AD experiments showed that 0.1 VS substrate :VS inoculum is optimum, whereas the higher substrate loading (0.2–0.5) resulted in a reversible inhibition of the methane production. The results suggest that torrefaction condensate could be practically valorized through AD.

In this work, valorization of Paulownia wood (PW) was proposed following several process configurations for biofuels and value-added compounds production. Firstly, autohydrolysis and ethanol-organosolv strategies were assessed separately for the fractionation of PW to enhance the enzymatic digestibility of cellulose. A third strategy focused on a sequential process (autohydrolysis and organosolv) was explored. Two temperatures were selected for the first stage of the combined process. High concentration of oligosaccharides (26.29 g/L) and high concentration of degradation products (17.21 g/L) were obtained at 210 and 230 °C, respectively. The solids obtained from both pretreatments were subjected to organosolv delignification (200 °C, 3 h and 50% ethanol) achieving delignification of 58 and 30% for the autohydrolyzed biomass at 210 °C and 230 °C, respectively. The combined process resulted in susceptible biomass able to produce 64 g/L of ethanol. Biochemical methane production (BMP) assays of acidified municipal sludge were conducted with local char (biochar and wood ash) in granular (0.85-4.75 mm) and powdered (0.075 mm) form. The effects of char addition on BMP were investigated under high acid stress conditions at substrate to inoculum ratios of 2.2, 3.2 and 4.4 g volatile solids (VS)/g-VS and char dosages of 0.2-3.7 g/g-VS

A mixture of sawmill feedstocks comprising four softwood species (fir, spruce, Scots pine, and Douglas fir) was subjected to a microwave-assisted Organosolv pretreatment. The influence of H2SO4 as a catalyst, ethanol-water ratio as the solvent, and temperature on wood fractionation, cellulose yield and purity, lignin recovery, and inhibitor formation were investigated. Minute addition of H2SO4 (0.25% w/w) was found to enhance lignin extraction and hemicellulose hydrolysis, thus providing cellulose yield and purity above 68% ± 2% and 61% ± 3%, respectively. The increase in H2SO4 up to 1% and temperature up to 190 °C, impaired cellulose yields a result of intense hydrolysis, thus degrading cellulose and hemicellulose. Conversely, the increase in ethanol-water ratio enhanced delignification without cellulose degradation. Similarly, inhibitor formation increased with pretreatment severity (H2SO4 content and temperature), but was mitigated by higher ethanol-water ratio. Finally, under best conditions (60:40 ethanol-water, 175 °C, 0.25% H2SO4), cellulose yield and purity reached 82% ± 3% and 71% ± 3%, respectively.

Thermochemical process of biomass is one of the promising renewable energy technologies; however, the by-product (wood vinegar wastewater) is rich in refractory organics, which is harmful to the environment and inhibits the conversion efficiency of microorganisms. Consequently, the dominant functional microbial communities corresponding to the various substrate were obtained through the continuous domestication, and the relationship between the dominant functional communities and the degradation of organic compounds was comprehensively analyzed. The bacterial community was absolutely dominant (approximately 85%), while archaea and fungi had similar relative abundance. The diversity showed that glucose was not conducive to the development of microbial diversity, while the substrate containing wood vinegar wastewater showed the opposite trend. The functional analysis revealed that the enrichment of bacteria associated with the hydrolysis and acidification of organics increased in the domestication process. Glucose facilitated hydrogen-trophic methanogenesis as the main methanogenic pathway in the methanogenic stage.

This studyinvestigated the behavior and kinetics of co-pyrolysis of apple wood (AW)with H3PO4and K3PO4as catalysts under microwaveto prepare biochar as microbialabsorbent. The kinetic studies indicate that the co-pyrolysis of AW withH3PO4orK3PO4can effectively improve the pyrolysis efficiencyand enhance the biocharcharacteristicsby reducing ofthe activation energy of the pyrolysis reaction. The kinetic parameters indicate that the activation energy of the mixturesin the main pyrolysis stage is lower than that of a single AW, whichmeanthat the co-pyrolysis of AW withH3PO4orK3PO4shows excellent synergy. Biochar characterization showed that the yield of biochar reachedthe highest58.6% whenthe ratio(H3PO4/AW) is0.5. The adsorption results show that the bacteria SL-44 can be effectively loaded on the surface of the biochar, and the adsorption process is combined with Langmuir model and process can proceed spontaneously.

The aim of this study was to analyze four conceptual beech wood based biorefineries generated during process design in terms of environmental and economic criteria. Biorefinery 1 annually converts 400,000 dry metric tons of beech wood into the primary products 41,600t/yr polymer-grade ethylene and 58,520tDM/yr organosolv lignin and the fuels 90,800tDM/yr hydrolysis lignin and 38,400t/yr biomethane. Biorefinery 2 is extended by the product of 58,400t/yr liquid "food-grade" carbon dioxide. Biorefinery 3 produces 69,600t/yr anhydrous ethanol instead of ethylene. Compared to biorefinery 3, biorefinery 4 additionally provides carbon dioxide as product. Biorefinery 3 and 4 seem most promising, since under basic assumptions both criteria, (i) economic effectiveness and (ii) reduction of potential environmental impacts, can be fulfilled. All four alternatives may reduce potential environmental impacts compared to reference systems using the ReCiPe methodology. Economic feasibilities of the analyzed biorefineries are highly sensitive.

Torrefaction of pine wood was performed in a tube furnace at three temperatures (220, 250, and 280 °C) for 30 min. Then catalytic pyrolysis of raw and torrefied pine wood was performed using HZSM-5 catalyst in a fixed-bed pyrolysis reactor at 550 °C for 15 min. Torrefaction pretreatment and catalytic pyrolysis have an very important effect on the yield, property, and energy distribution of pyrolysis products. The results showed that the yield of biochar rapidly increased, while that of bio-oil decreased with increasing torrefaction temperature. The oxy-compound content of bio-oil, such as acids and aldehydes, sharply decreased. However, the aromatic hydrocarbon content not only increased but also further promoted by HZSM-5 catalyst. With highest mass yields and energy yields, biochar was also the very important product of pyrolysis. The oxygen content in biomass was mainly removed in the form of CO2 and H2O, leading to increasing CO2 content in non-condensable gas.

Lignocellulose biorefineries are distinguished by an explicitly integrative, multi-functional concept that transforms biomass into multiple products, using a variety of conversion and separation processes. This study focuses on the technical design and economic evaluation of a lignocellulose biorefinery, that converts 400,000tDM/a (≙250MW) of beech wood into chemicals and fuel. A model was simulated with Aspen Plus® including the process steps pre-treatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, alcoholic fermentation, dehydration and biogas generation and upgrading. Mass and energy balances showed that 61,600t/a polymer-grade ethylene, 58,520tDM/a organosolv lignin, 38,400t/a biomethane and 90,800tDM/a hydrolysis lignin can be produced with a total energy efficiency of 87.1%. A discounted cash flow analysis indicated that the heat integrated biorefinery concept is not yet profitable. However, the economic results are greatly sensitive regarding various assumptions, in particular in terms of the prices for beech wood, ethylene and organosolv lignin.

Eucalyptus is the most widely planted type of hardwoods, and represents an important biomass source for the production of fuels, chemicals, and materials. Its industrial benefit can be achieved by processes following the biorefinery concept, which is based on the selective separation ("fractionation") of the major components (hemicelluloses, cellulose and lignin), and on the generation of added-value from the resulting fractions. This article provides a in-depth assessment on the composition of Eucalyptus wood and a critical evaluation of selected technologies allowing its overall exploitation. These latter include treatments with organosolvents and with emerging fractionation agents (ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents). The comparative evaluation of the diverse processing technologies is carried out in terms of degree of fractionation, yields and selectivities. The weak and strong points, challenges, and opportunities of the diverse fractionation methods are identified, focusing on the integral utilization of the feedstocks.

In this study, the pyrolysis process of 20 kinds of biomass samples in 3 types (stalk-type, wood-type and shell-type) was investigated with thermogravimetric analyzer, and the correlation of biomass pyrolysis property with biomass chemical structure was put forward. The results showed that the pyrolysis of the 20 kinds of biomass can be classified by types as the pyrolysis of stalk-type biomass had an overlapping decomposition peak of hemicellulose and cellulose at 317 °C. However, the pyrolysis of wood-type and shell-type biomass showed two separated peaks at low temperature and the cellulose peak was higher in wood-type biomass (365 °C) compared to shell-type biomass (348 °C). The different pyrolysis process mentioned above could be due to the positive correlation between cellulose crystallinity and the decomposition temperature of cellulose as well as the activation energy at the decomposition stage of cellulose.

To elevate the glucose yield from the enzymatic hydrolysis of poplar wood for bio-ethanol production, quick hydrothermal treatment (QHT) was conducted at 200 °C for a short period of time from 5 min to 25 min. It was found that the QHT could remove >85% of the hemicelluloses and ~30% of the lignin in the poplar wood, and achieve 82% cellulose conversion at a low cellulase dosage of 10 FPU/g substrate. The enhancement digestibility of poplar wood was ascribed to the higher accessibility of cellulose, as the specific surface area of the substrate increased from 3.0 m2/g to 7.1 m2/g from the of untreated wood to the QHT-treated wood. The results demonstrate the improvements in digestibility and hydrolysis rates after QHT.

The hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HBKP) fibers were pretreated by PFI mill to obtain the substrates, the effects of fibrillation on HBKP fibers' enzymatic hydrolysis was studied. The results showed that the enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency was enhanced obviously by mechanical refining. The mechanical refining alterated the fibers' characteristics such as fibrillation degree, specific surface area, swelling ability, crystallinity, fiber length and fines content. All these factors correlating to the enzymatic hydrolysis were evaluated through mathematical analysis. Among these factors, the fibrillation degree has the profoundest impact on the enzymatic hydrolysis of wood fibers. Consequently, the mechanical refining aiming for a high fibrillation degree was feasible to enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass.

In the present study, ethanol production from polysaccharides or wood chips was conducted in a single reactor under anaerobic conditions using the white rot fungus Schizophyllum commune NBRC 4928, which produces enzymes that degrade lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. The ethanol yields produced from glucose and xylose were 80.5%, and 52.5%, respectively. The absolute yields of ethanol per microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), xylan and arabinogalactan were 0.26g/g-MCC, 0.0419g/g-xylan and 0.0508g/g-arabinogalactan, respectively. By comparing the actual ethanol yields from polysaccharides with monosaccharide fermentation, it was shown that the rate of saccharification was slower than that in fermentation. S. commune NBRC 4928 is concluded to be suitable for CBP because it can produce ethanol from various types of sugar. From the autoclaved cedar chip, only little ethanol was produced by S. commune NBRC 4928 alone but ethanol production was enhanced by combined use of ethanol fermenting and lignin degrading fungi.

Organosolv is a promising pretreatment for lignocellulose biorefinery on the integrated utilization of full components from lignocellulosic biomass. A highly efficient pretreatment process using methanol/dioxane binary solvent with microwave irradiation is proposed in this study. Poplar wood was fractionated to high quality cellulosic residue, lignin, and monosaccharide derivatives under mild conditions (120 °C, 10 min). The follow-up enzymatic hydrolysis of resulting cellulosic residues achieved almost theoretical glucan conversion over 99%. The 2D-NMR and GPC results showed that the recovered lignin precipitates contain low amount of condensed structures and have relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The composition analysis of monosaccharide derivatives indicated that the methanol/dioxane solvent tends to convert monosaccharides into glycosides rather than further degradation by-products. The mass balance result estimated that totally 74.2% of raw poplar can be utilized by the pretreatment proposed in this study.

Microbial fuel cell is a green and sustainable bio-electrochemical system that can harvest bioelectricity from organic matter conversion by bacteria in wastewater, but weak electrochemical activity and poor biocompatibility between electro-active bacteria and anode limit its scale-up application. In the present, the biomass carbon derived from mango wood was prepared via one-step carbonization method for anode materials in microbial fuel cell. A desirable anode C/1050 with large electrochemical active surface area (75.3 cm2), low electron transfer resistance (4.36 Ω), and benign biocompatibility were developed, achieving power density up to 589.8 mW·m−2. This study provides a low-cost and high-performance biomass carbon used as anode material in microbial fuel cell for practical application.

In this study, Leucaena leucocephala wood was pretreated with aqueous glycerol having H2SO4 as the catalyst. Response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were used to optimize the process parameters, catalyst concentration (1-3%), duration (120-300 min) and temperature (100-150 °C). ANN gave more accurate predictions for total reducing sugar yield than RSM. ANN also had lower values for error functions. Severity index (SI) was calculated based on the temperature, duration and catalyst concentration. Increase in SI from 0.21 * 103 to 2.06 * 103 increased total reducing sugar (TRS) production from 39.97 g/kg to 321.8 g/kg. Further increase in SI reduced the TRS and this change positively correlates with the loss of cellulose content. Correlation analysis showed that severity index can also be used to describe pretreatment process.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of torrefaction on the pyrolysis of rubber wood sawdust (RWS) using pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Three typical torrefaction temperatures (200, 250, and 300 °C) and pyrolysis temperatures (450, 500, and 550 °C) were considered. The results suggested that only diethyl phthalate, belonging to esters, was detected at the torrefaction temperatures of 200 and 250 °C, revealing hemicellulose degradation. With the torrefaction temperature of 300 °C, esters, aldehydes, and phenols were detected, suggesting the predominant decomposition of hemicellulose and lignin. The double-shot pyrolysis indicated that the contents of oxy-compounds such as acids and aldehydes in pyrolysis bio-oil decreased with rising torrefaction temperature, implying that increasing torrefaction severity abated oxygen content in the bio-oil. With the torrefaction temperature of 300 °C, relatively more cellulose was retained in the biomass because the carbohydrate content in the pyrolysis bio-oil increased significantly.

Bamboo and masson pine was torrefied with 300°C of temperature for 2.0h of residence time using GSL 1600X tube furnace in the argon atmosphere. Torrefied bamboo and masson pine particles were uniform mixed with different weight ratios. Pyrolysis and combustion characteristics were investigated through thermogravimetry (TGA). The results showed that pyrolysis and combustion process of all samples included three steps even though their characteristics were different. Torrefied biomass had a higher pyrolysis and combustion temperature, due to moisture and volatile removal and thermal decomposition of hemicelluloses, cellulose and lignin during torrefaction process. Torrefaction also increased high heating value, ash content and C/H and C/O ratio of biomass. The synergy of torrefied bamboo and torrefied mason pine was not found during pyrolysis and combustion process of blends. The results from this research will be very important and helpful to develop and utilize the wastes of masson pine and bamboo for energy products.

Activated carbon fiber (C-WACF) with super high surface area and well-developed small mesopores were prepared by liquefied wood and uses wood charcoal (WC) as additive. The characterization and properties of C-WACF were investigated by XRD, XPS and N 2 adsorption. Results showed the pore development was significant at temperatures >750 °C, and reached a maximum BET surface area (2604.7 m 2 /g) and total pore volume (1.433 cm 3 /g) at 850 °C, of which 86.8% was from the contribution of the small mesopores of 2–4 nm. It was also found that the mesopore volume and methylene blue adsorption of C-WACF were highly increased as the temperature increases from 750 to 850 °C. Additionally, the reduction of graphitic layers, the obvious changes of functional groups and the more unstable carbons on the surface of C-WACF, which played important roles in the formation of mesopores, were also observed.

Magnetic biochar (MMABC) prepared from Melia azedarach wood was used for aqueous Cr(VI) removal. MMABC was a mesoporous material with SBET 5.219 m2/g and superparamagnetic magnetization 17.3 emu/g contributed by the contained Fe3O4. The MMABC showed higher removal efficiency (99.8%) than biochar under conditions of dosage 5 g/L, pH = 3.0, and Cr(VI) concentration 10 mg/L. The saturation magnetization (16.1emg/g) of MMABC still remained after adsorption. According to FTIR and Raman results, the benzene-ring adjacent carbonyl did not showed obvious positive effects on Cr(VI) removal. A potential mechanism and corresponding apparent kinetic model indicated the Cr(VI) removal process by MMABC followed adsorption-reduction-adsorption steps. Cr(VI) was firstly adsorbed on surface and subsequently reduced to Cr(III), which was further adsorbed on MMABC surface. Langmuir isotherm (with maximal adsorption capacity of 25.27 mg/g) and pseudo second-order kinetic model were suitable for adsorption step.

Combined anaerobic–aerobic processes are efficacious and economic approaches in treating swine wastewater. Nitrogen removal efficiency of these processes, however, is usually limited due to the low carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio of the wastewater. An innovative wood-chip-framework soil infiltrator (WFSI) was developed and its performance in treating anaerobic digested swine wastewater was investigated. The WFSI showed comparable removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and amongst the highest efficiency of nitrogen removal in treating low C/N wastewater. At a COD volume loading rate of 98.6 g/m 3 d the WFSI could remove up to 47.7 g/m 3 d of COD. Removal rates of NH 4 + -N and total nitrogen, also reached 69.1 and 30.4 g/m 3 d, respectively, when NH 4 + -N loading rate was 88.4 g/m 3 d. Biological analysis indicated that aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic microbiota occurred throughout the WFSI. Abundant cellulose and lignin decomposing bacteria could degrade the wood chips and provided extra carbon source to enhance denitrification.

The ability of Trametes villosa laccase, in conjuction with 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT) as mediator and alkaline extraction, to remove lignin was demonstrated during treatment of wood (Eucalyptus globulus) and non-wood (Pennisetum purpureum) feedstocks. At 50 U g−1 laccase and 2.5% HBT concentration, 48% and 32% of the Eucalyptus and Pennisetum lignin were removed, respectively. Two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance of the feedstocks, swollen in dimethylsulfoxide-d6, revealed the removal of p-hydroxyphenyl, guaiacyl and syringyl lignin units and aliphatic (mainly β-O-4′-linked) side-chains of lignin, and a moderate removal of p-coumaric acid (present in Pennisetum) without a substantial change in polysaccharide cross-signals. The enzymatic pretreatment (at 25 U g−1) of Eucalyptus and Pennisetum feedstocks increased the glucose (by 61% and 12% in 72 h) and ethanol (by 4 and 2 g L−1 in 17 h) yields from both lignocellulosic materials, respectively, as compared to those without enzyme treatment.

The effects of wood vinegar (WVG) on extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and flocculation, sedimentation and dewatering performances of activated sludge were investigated in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process. Results showed that polysaccharide (PS) and DNA were accounted for the largest and smallest proportion of EPS, respectively. With WVG injection, productions of soluble EPS (S-EPS), loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS), tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS), protein (PN), PS, and DNA were significantly increased. The optimal WVG concentration was found as 4 μl/l. The effects of WVG on different types of EPS followed an order of LB-EPS > TB-EPS > S-EPS. According to batch and long-term SBR operations, WVG could increase the biomass amount of activated sludge, which was beneficial to improve sewage treatment efficiencies. However, WVG showed negative impact on flocculation, sedimentation, and dewatering performance of activated sludge.

In this work, the hydrothermal carbonization of glucose, cellulose, chitin, chitosan and wood chips at 200°C at processing times between 6 and 48h was studied. The carbonization degree of wood chips, cellulose and chitosan obviously increases as function of time. The heating value of glucose increases to 88% upon carbonization for 48h, while it is only 5% for chitin. It is calculated to be between 44 and 73% for wood chips, chitosan and cellulose. Glucose yielded complete formation of spherical hydrochar structures at a shorter processing time, as low as 12h. However, carbon spheres with narrow size (∼560nm) distribution were obtained upon 48h of residence time. Cellulose and wood chips yielded a similar morphology with an irregular size distribution. Chitin seemed not to undergo hydrothermal carbonization, whereas densely aggregated spheres of a uniform size around 42nm were obtained from chitosan after 18h.

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of wood charcoal as biofilter media under transient and high loading condition. Biofiltration of xylene was investigated for 150 days in a laboratory scale unit packed with wood charcoal and inoculated with mixed microbial culture at the xylene loading rates ranged from 12 to 553 g m−3 h−1. The kinetic analysis of the xylene revealed absence of substrate inhibition and possibility of achieving higher elimination under optimum condition. The pH, temperature, pressure drop and CO2 production rate were regularly monitored during the experiments. Throughout experimental period, the removal efficiency (RE) was found to be in the range of 65–98.7% and the maximum elimination capacity (EC) was 405.7 g m−3 h−1. Molecular characterization results show Bacillus sp. as dominating microbial group in the biofilm.
