Flask experiments yielded a peak lipid content of 33.7 % and β-carotene concentration of 13.6 mg/g under specific nutrient conditions. The study also investigated pH effects on production in bioreactors, revealing optimal lipid and β-carotene contents at pH 6.0, reaching 22.9 % and 44 mg/g, respectively. Lipid profiles were consistent across experiments, with C18:1 being the dominant compound at approximately 50 %. Abstract With objective to design cyanobacterial biorefinery, taking Lyngbya as a model organism, a detail sequential protocol has been developed for production of UV protectant and lipids. This study addresses ultra violet radiations (UVR), exposure time of UVRT, nitrogen stress, salinity, oxidative stress to produce UV protectant and lipid in cyanobacteria. To evaluate these parameters a design of experiment (DOE; using a 2 k design) was performed. Based on chemical solubility property of UV protectant in form of mycosporine like amino acid (MAAs) and lipids were extracted. Quantitative and qualitative assay of UV protectant was confirmed by spectrophotometric scanning and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and lipid through fatty acid methyl esters analysis. This study concluded, UV exposure is good strategy to induce synthesis of UV protectant and saturated lipid productivity. Abstract A newly-isolated oleaginous fungus Mucor circinelloides ZSKP concurrently yielded 21.4% lipids and 11.2% chitosan per gram of biomass. Parameters affecting the co-production were identified using Plackett-Burman design and were statistically optimized using Response Surface Methodology, which resulted in a 3-fold improvement in lipid production. The lipid profile showed a high content of unsaturated fatty acids including oleic (37%), linolenic (14%) and linoleic acids (19%), while palmitic acid was the major saturated fatty acid (21%). A comparative study to evaluate the efficacy of enzymatic (lipase) and chemical treatments for biodiesel production from fungal lipids and sunflower oil revealed enhanced production of biodiesel from fungal lipids. Synthesized biodiesel from M. circinelloides ZSKP satisfied standard specifications and had a higher cetane number (56), lower kinematic viscosity (4.6 mm2/s) and lower acid number (0.03) compared to sunflower oil. Abstract The overwhelming response towards algal biodiesel production has been well-recognized recently as a sustainable alternative to conventional fuels. Most microalgae cannot grow well at acidic pH. The present study, therefore, investigated whether non-acidophilic microalgae Desmodesmus sp. MAS1 and Heterochlorella sp. MAS3 can be acclimated to extreme-acidic pH for sustainable production of biomass and biodiesel. Growth analysis indicated that both the microalgal strains possessed a passive uptake of CO 2 at pH 3.0 with biomass production of 0.25 g dry wt. L−1 in Desmodemus sp. and 0.45 g dry wt. L−1 in Heterochlorella sp.. Flow-cytometry analysis for reactive oxygen species, membrane permeability and neutral-lipids revealed the capabilities of both strains to adapt to the stress imposed by acidic pH. Lipid production was doubled in both the strains when grown at pH 3.0. In this study, we applied a second round of random mutagenesis using ethyl methanesulfonate to further increase the lipid productivity of a Chlorella vulgaris mutant strain. We generated a mutant (UV715-EMS25) with a lipid content and biomass that were respectively 67% and 35% higher than those of the wild type (WT). The highest achieved lipid productivity in UV715-EMS25 was 91 mg L −1  day −1 . Gas chromatography-mass spectrophotometric analysis revealed that the fatty acid methyl ester content of the mutant was 3.9-fold higher compared with that of WT cells. Amounts of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids were also higher in the mutant, while the total amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids were lower. Finally, the mutant displayed superior lipid productivity compared with the WT during pilot-scale cultivation in a flat panel photobioreactor. Four solid acid catalysts including graphene oxide (GO), sulfonated graphene oxide (SGO), sulfonated graphene (SG), and sulfonated active carbon (SAC) were used to convert lipids in wet microalgae into biodiesel. The physiochemical properties of the catalysts were characterized with scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. SGO provided the highest conversion efficiency (84.6% of sulfuric acid) of lipids to fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). Whereas SAC converted few lipids into FAME. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and elemental analysis revealed that much higher hydrophilic hydroxyl content in SGO catalyst resulted in a considerable higher conversion efficiency of lipids to FAME than that (48.6%) catalyzed by SG, although SO 3 H groups (0.44 mmol/g) in SGO were less than those (1.69 mmol/g) in SG. In the present investigation, toxic algal bloom, a copious and low-cost nutrient source was deployed for cultivating Chlorella pyrenoidosa . Various pre-treatment methods using combinations of acid/alkali and autoclave/microwave were tested for preparing hydrolysates and compared with minimal media (BG-11). Acid autoclave treatment resulted in maximum carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous content which substantially boosted the growth of the microalgal cells (4.36 g/L) as compared to rest of the media. The microalga grown in this media also showed enhanced lipid content (43.2%) and lipid productivity (188 mg/L/d) as compared to BG-11 (19.42 mg/L/d). The biochemical composition showed 1.6-fold declines in protein while 1.27 folds in carbohydrate content as compared to BG-11. The fatty acid profile revealed the presence of C14-C22 with increased amount of monounsaturated fatty acids as compared to BG-11. A simultaneous cell disruption and lipid extraction method is developed for microalgal biodiesel production using a triethylamine/methanol solvent system. Individually, the pure solvents, i.e. triethylamine and methanol, do not exhibit significant enhancement in lipid extraction, but a 3:7 (v/v) triethylamine/methanol mixture exhibits the highest lipid extraction, corresponding to 150% of the conventional chloroform/methanol (2:1, v/v) solvent extraction. This extraction is equivalent to 92.5% of the total lipids, even when extracted from a wet microalgal biomass with a water content of 80%. The cell surfaces of the microalgae are significantly disrupted without using additional cell disruption reagents and without requiring energy-intensive equipment. The lipid mass transfer coefficient is 1.6 times greater than that of the chloroform/methanol solvent system. Cultivation of microalgae Chlorella sp. with livestock waste compost as an alternative nutrient source was investigated in this present study. Five culture media with different nutrient concentrations were prepared. The characteristics of algal growth and lipid production were examined. The results showed that the specific growth rate together with biomass and lipid productivities was different among all the cultures. As the initial nutrient concentration decreased, the lipid content of Chlorella sp. increased. The variations in lipid productivity of Chlorella sp. among all the cultures were mainly due to the deviations in biomass productivity. The livestock waste compost medium with 2000 mg L −1 COD provided an optimal nutrient concentration for Chlorella sp. cultivation, where the highest productivities of biomass (288.84 mg L −1 day −1 ) and lipid (104.89 mg L −1 day −1 ) were presented. The present study investigates the effect of spent media of acetogenic dark fermentation for mixotrophic algal cultivation for biodiesel production. Mixotrophic growth conditions were optimized in culture flask (250 mL) using Chlorella sp. MJ 11/11. Maximum lipid accumulation (58% w/w) was observed under light intensity, pH, nitrate and phosphate concentration of 100 μmol m −2 s −1 , 7, 2.7 mM and 1.8 mM, respectively. Air lift (1.4 L) and flat panel (1.4 L) reactors were considered for algal cultivation. Air lift showed significant improvement in biomass and lipid production as compared to flat panel reactor. The results could help in development of sustainable technology involving acetogenic hydrogen production integrated with sequential mitigation of spent media by algal cultivation for improved energy recovery. Oleaginous yeasts-derived microbial lipids provide a promising alternative feedstock for the biodiesel industry. However, hyperosmotic stress caused by high sugar concentration during fermentation significantly prevents high cell density and productivity. Isolation of new robust osmophilic oleaginous species from specific environment possibly resolves this issue to some extent. In this study, the cultivable yeast composition of honeycombs was investigated. Totally, 11 species of honeycomb-associated cultivable yeast were identified and characterized. Among them, an osmophilic yeast strain, designated as Rhodotorula toruloides C23 was featured with excellent lipogenic and carotenogenic capacity and remarkable cell growth using glucose, xylose or glycerol as feedstock, with simultaneous production of 24.41 g/L of lipids and 15.50 mg/L of carotenoids from 120 g/L glucose in 6.7-L fermentation. Comparative transcriptomic analysis showed that C23 had evolved a dedicated molecular regulation mechanism to maintain their high simultaneous accumulation of intracellular lipids and carotenoids and cell growth under high sugar concentration. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) may play a crucial role in shifting to a zero-emission future by becoming more sustainable and contributing to the circular economy (CE). Recovered lipids from urban sewage can serve as a raw material for biofuel production contributing to a waste reduction, mitigation of natural resources depletion and reinforcing security and energy independence. A novel, pilot-scale lipid accumulation technology (LAT) employing parameters to select M. parvicella for the biofuel/biodiesel production was implemented on a side stream of an urban WWTP. The LAT proved its concept as the average amount of extracted lipids accumulated in the bioreactors was three-fold higher when compared to the lipids existing in activated sludge. In order to produce biodiesel from lipids in wet microalgae with graphene oxide (GO) as solid acid catalyst, the effects on lipids conversion efficiencies of catalyst dosage, transesterification temperature, reaction time, methanol dosage and chloroform dosage were investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and elemental analysis revealed that GO contained 0.997 mmol SO 3 H groups per gram and high amounts of OH groups. Scanning electron microscopy showed that wet microalgae cells were adsorbed on hydrophilic GO surfaces covered with many OH groups. Lipids extracted by chloroform from microalgal cells were transformed into fatty acids methyl esters (FAMEs) through transesterification catalyzed by the acid centers (SO 3 H groups) in GO catalysts. This study investigates the year-round production potential and quality of biodiesel from wastewater treatment high rate algal pond (WWT HRAP) biomass and how it is affected by CO 2 addition to the culture. The mean monthly pond biomass and lipid productivities varied between 2.0 ± 0.3 and 11.1 ± 2.5 g VSS/m 2 /d, and between 0.5 ± 0.1 and 2.6 ± 1.1 g/m 2 /d, respectively. The biomass fatty acid methyl esters were highly complex which led to produce low-quality biodiesel so that it cannot be used directly as a transportation fuel. Overall, 0.9 ± 0.1 g/m 2 /d (3.2 ± 0.5 ton/ha/year) low-quality biodiesel could be produced from WWT HRAP biomass which could be further increased to 1.1 ± 0.1 g/m 2 /d (4.0 ton/ha/year) by lowering culture pH to 6–7 during warm summer months. This study evaluates the effect of different concentrations of glucose supplementation on growth, lipid accumulation, and the fatty acid profile in the Auxenochlorella protothecoides . Addition of glucose promoted the growth rate and decreased the chlorophyll content. Compared with photoautotrophic cells, an increase in the lipid content was observed in mixotrophic cells. The glucose addition induced changes in the fatty acid profile. Higher content of saturated fatty acids was found in the case of cells growing in the glucose-free medium. Oleic acid was the predominant component in mixotrophic cells supplemented with 5 g L −1 glucose, while linoleic acids dominated in cultures supplemented with both 1 and 3 g L −1 glucose. Oleaginous yeast Trichosporon cutaneum is robust to high levels of lignocellulose derived inhibitor compounds with considerable lipid accumulation capacity. The potential of lipid accumulation of T. cutaneum ACCC 20271 was investigated using corn stover hydrolysates with varying sugar and inhibitor concentrations. Biodiesel was synthesized using the extracted lipid and the product satisfied the ASTM standards. Among the typical inhibitors, T. cutaneum ACCC 20271 is relatively sensitive to furfural and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, but strongly tolerant to high titers of formic acid, acetic acid, levulinic acid, HMF, vanillin, and syringaldehyde. It is capable of complete degradation of formic acid, acetic acid, vanillin and 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. Finally, the inhibitor degradation pathways of T. cutaneum ACCC 20271 were constructed based on the newly sequenced whole genome information and the experimental results. The lipid extraction from the microbial biomass is a tedious and high cost dependent process. In the present study, detergent assisted lipids extraction from the culture of the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica SKY-7 was carried out. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the effect of three principle parameters (N-LS concentration, time and temperature) on microbial lipid extraction efficiency % (w/w). The results obtained by statistical analysis showed that the quadratic model fits in all cases. Maximum lipid recovery of 95.3 ± 0.3% w/w was obtained at the optimum level of process variables [N-LS concentration 24.42 mg (equal to 48 mg N-LS/g dry biomass), treatment time 8.8 min and reaction temperature 30.2 °C]. Whereas the conventional chloroform and methanol extraction to achieve total lipid recovery required 12 h at 60 °C. The biomass of Chlorella sp. was pretreated with three different aqueous deep eutectic solvents (aDESs), i.e. aqueous choline chloride-oxalic acid (aCh-O), aqueous choline chloride-ethylene glycol (aCh-EG) and aqueous urea-acetamide (aU-A). The effect of aDESs pretreatment of microalgae biomass was evaluated in terms of lipid recovery rate, total carbohydrate content, fatty acid composition, and thermal chemical behavior of biomass. Results indicated that, lipid recovery rate was increased from 52.03% of untreated biomass to 80.90%, 66.92%, and 75.26% of the biomass treated by aCh-O, aCh-EG and aU-A, respectively. However, there were no major changes observed in fatty acid profiles of both untreated and treated biomass, specifically palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid and stearic acid under various pretreatments. Furthermore, characterizations of untreated and treated biomass were carried out using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) to understand the enhanced lipids recovery. Strain selection is one of the primary hurdles facing cost-effective microalgal biodiesel production. Indeed, the strain used affects both upstream and downstream biodiesel production processes. This study presents a screening procedure that considers the most significant criteria in microalgal biodiesel production including TAG production and wet extraction and recovery of TAGs. Fourteen freshwater and seawater strains were investigated. Large variation was observed between the strains in all the screening criteria. The overall screening procedure ultimately led to the identification of Parachlorella kessleri UTEX2229 and Nannochloropsis gaditana CCMP527 as the best freshwater and seawater strains, respectively. They featured the largest areal TAG productivity equal to 2.7 × 10 −3 and 2.3 × 10 −3 kg m −2 d −1 , respectively. These two strains also displayed encouraging cell fragility in a high pressure bead milling process with 69% and 98% cell disruption at 1750 bar making them remarkable strains for TAG extraction in wet environment. In order to obtain microalgal saponifiable lipids (SLs) fractions containing different polar lipid (glycolipids and phospholipids) contents, SLs were extracted from wet Nannochloropsis gaditana microalgal biomass using seven extraction systems, and the polar lipid contents of some fractions were reduced by low temperature acetone crystallization. We observed that the polar lipid content in the extracted lipids depended on the polarity of the first solvent used in the extraction system. Lipid fractions with polar lipid contents between 75.1% and 15.3% were obtained. Some of these fractions were transformed into fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs, biodiesel) by methanolysis, catalyzed by the lipases Novozym 435 and Rhizopus oryzae in tert-butanol medium. We observed that the reaction velocity was higher the lower the polar lipid content, and that the final FAME conversions achieved after using the same lipase batch to catalyze consecutive reactions decreased in relation to an increase in the polar lipid content. This study evaluated the suitability of pinewood pyrolysates as a carbon source for lipid production and cultivation of the oleaginous yeast Rhodosporidium diobovatum and the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris . Thermal decomposition of pinewood and fractional condensation were used to obtain an oil rich in levoglucosan which was upgraded to glucose by acid hydrolysis. Blending of pyrolytic sugars with pure glucose in both nitrogen rich and nitrogen limited conditions was studied for R. diobovatum , and under nitrogen limited conditions for C. vulgaris . Glucose consumption rate decreased with increasing proportions of pyrolytic sugars increasing cultivation time. While R. diobovatum was capable of growth in 100% (v/v) pyrolytic sugars, C. vulgaris growth declined rapidly in blends greater than 20% (v/v) until no growth was detected in blends >40%. Paper mill sludge (PMS) was assessed as cheap renewable lignocellulosic biomass for lipid production by the oleaginous yeast Cryptococcus vishniaccii (MTCC 232). The sonicated paper mill sludge extract (PMSE) exhibited enhanced lipid yield and lipid content 7.8 ± 0.57 g/l, 53.40% in comparison to 5.5 ± 0.8 g/l, 40.44% glucose synthetic medium, respectively. The accumulated triglycerides (TAG) inside the lipid droplets (LDs) were converted to biodiesel by transesterification and thoroughly characterized using GC–MS technique. The fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) profile obtained reveals elevated content of oleic acid followed by palmitic acid, linoleic acid and stearic acid with improved oxidative stability related to biodiesel quality. Despite the vast interest in microalgae as feedstock for biodiesel production, relatively few studies examined their response to diurnal temperature fluctuation. Here, we describe biomass and lipid productivities and fatty acid profiles of thermo-resistant Micractinium sp. and Scenedesmus sp. grown in batch cultures in a laboratory set-up that mimics a typically warm summer day in Central Anatolia with a 16-h light temperature of 30 °C and 8-h dark temperature of 16 °C (30 °C (day)/16 °C (night)). Both strains can survive a temperature range of 10–50 °C. We found the lipid productivities of Micractinium sp. and Scenedesmus sp. as 30/21 mg L −1 d −1 and 6/7 mg L −1 d −1 , respectively during the 30 °C (day)/16 °C (night) cycle. Saturated fatty acid content increased with increasing temperature. Additionally, we cultured Micractinium sp. under Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) limiting conditions. Highest lipid productivity of 85.4 ± 2 mg L −1 d −1 was obtained under P-depletion during exponential growth phase. Oleic acid amount also increased eight fold during P-deplete. Kelp waste extracts (KWE) contained massive soluble sugars, amino acids and various mineral elements. To probe the effects of KWE on microalgal physiological and biochemical responses, the cultures were carried out under the different dilutions. The results showed that 8.0% KWE increased the biomass productivities and total lipid contents of Chlorella strains dramatically, which were 1.83–31.86 times and 20.78–25.91% higher than that of the control. Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Spirulina maxima presented a better growth performance in 1.0% and 4.0% treatment respectively, while their lipid accumulation were not enhanced. In Chlorella -Arc, Chlorella sorokiniana and P. tricornutum , the contents of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids could be increased, and polyunsaturated fatty acids could be decreased under the conditions of high concentration of KWE (6.0–8.0%). In the batch experiments, the preference of Yarrowia lipolytica W29 for acetic acid over butyric and caproic acids was demonstrated, with the highest consumption rate reaching 0.664 g/L·h. In this work, neutral lipids (NLs) extraction capacity and selectivity of six solvents were firstly compared. In addition, an eco-friendly solvent combination of ethyl acetate and ethanol (EA/E) was proposed and tested for lipid extraction from Chlorella sp. cultivated in outdoor raceway ponds and effect of extraction variables on lipid yield were intensively studied. Results indicated that lipid extraction yield was increased with solvent to biomass ratio but did not vary significantly when the value exceeded 20:1. Lipid yield was found to be strongly dependent on extraction temperature and time. Finally, fatty acid profiles of lipid were determined and results indicated that the major components were octadecanoic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid, demonstrating that the lipid extracted from the Chlorella sp. cultivated in outdoor raceway ponds by EA/E was suitable feedstock for biodiesel production. Bio-based fuels are becoming more and more important due to the depleting fossil resources. The production of biodiesel from algae oil is challenging compared to terrestrial vegetable oils, as algae oil consists of polar fatty acids, such as phospholipids and glycolipids, as well as non-polar triglycerides and free fatty acids common in vegetable oils. It is shown that a single sulphonated solid acid catalyst can perform the esterification and transesterification reactions of both polar and non-polar lipids. In mild reaction conditions (60–70 °C) Nafion NR50 catalyst produces methyl palmitate (FAME) from the palmitic acid derivatives of di-, and tri-glyceride, free fatty acid, and phospholipid with over 80% yields, with the glycolipid derivative giving nearly 40% yields of FAME. These results demonstrate how the polar and non-polar lipid derivatives of algal oil can be utilised as feedstocks for biodiesel production with a single catalyst in one reaction step. This work aimed to find an optimum culture medium for green microalga Botryococcus braunii KMITL and investigate its biodiesel properties based on fatty acid composition. Four different media were tested. Chlorella medium was the best medium for lipid yield. Among four nitrogen sources tested, KNO 3 produced the highest lipid yield. When varied the nitrogen concentrations, this strain gave the highest lipid yield at the highest nitrogen level. When cultivated in the best medium and nitrogen source and level for 30 days, and then cultivated further for 14 days in the medium with no nitrogen, the highest lipid content and yield were 49.94 ± 0.82% and 2.71 ± 0.02 g L −1 , respectively. C16:0 fatty acid was the major fatty acid found. Fatty acid profiles of B. braunii KMITL cultivated in Chlorella medium with 1.25 g L −1 KNO 3 gave the best biodiesel properties with the lowest iodine value, maximum cetane number, and lowest degree of unsaturation. Critical influence of different short chain fatty acids as organic carbon source, during growth (GP) and nutrient stress lipogenic phase (NSLP) was investigated on biomass and lipid productivity, in mixotrophic fed-batch microalgae cultivation. Nutrient deprivation induced physiological stress stimulated highest lipid productivity with acetate (total/neutral lipids, 35/17) with saturation index of 80.53% by the end of NSLP followed by butyrate (12/7%; 78%). Biomass growth followed the order of acetate (2.23 g/l) >butyrate (0.99 g/l) >propionate (0.77 g/l). VFA removal (as COD) was maximum with acetate (87%) followed by butyrate (55.09%) and propionate (10.60%). Palmitic acid was the most dominant fatty acid found in the fatty acid composition of all variants and butyrate fed system yielded a maximum of 44% palmitic acid. Protein profiling illustrated prominence of acetyl CoA-synthetase activity in acetate system. Two fresh water microalgae, Coelastrella sp. M-60 and Micractinium sp. M-13 were investigated in this study for their potential of biodiesel production. For increasing biomass and lipid production, these microalgae were subjected to nutrient starvation (nitrogen, phosphorous, iron), salinity stress and nutrient supplementation with sugarcane industry effluent, citric acid, glucose and vitamin B 12 . The lipid productivity obtained from the isolates Coelastrella sp. M-60 (13.9 ± 0.4 mg/L/day) and Micractinium sp. M-13 (11.1 ± 0.2 mg/L/day) was maximum in salinity stress. The media supplemented with all the four nutrients yielded higher lipid productivity than the control. The growth, lipid production, and carbon use efficiency of two oleaginous yeasts, Rhodosporidium babjevae and Rhodosporidium diobovatum , were compared under nitrogen-limiting conditions with glycerol as the carbon source. Final biomass concentrations of R. babjevae and R. diobovatum were 9.4 ± 0.80 g/L and 12.0 ± 0.82 g/L, respectively, after 120 h of growth. Final lipid accumulation in for R. babjevae and R. diobovatum were 34.9 ± 3.0% cell dry weight (cdw) and 63.7 ± 4.5% cdw, respectively. Biomass production increased to 9.9 ± 0.2 g/L for R. babjevae and 14.1 ± 0.2 g/L for R. diobovatum in medium containing biodiesel-derived waste glycerol, but lipid accumulation decreased in both species. In a 7 L bioreactor with biodiesel-derived glycerol as carbon source, R. diobovatum produced 13.6 ± 0.4 g/L biomass and accumulated lipids to 50.7 ± 2.2% cdw, matching flask experiments. Nannochloropsis has emerged as a promising alga for biodiesel production. However, the genus consists of 6 species and hundreds of strains making strain selection a challenge. Furthermore, oil productivity is instrumental to economic viability of any algal strain for industrial production, which is dependent on growth rate and oil content. In most cases, these two parameters have been studied independently. Thus, the goal of this study is to provide a combined method for evaluating strain performance in specially designed photobioreactors together with an in-depth lipidomic analyses. The nine strains of Nannochloropsis tested showed considerable variations in productivity and lipidomics highlighting the importance of strain selection. Finally, Nannochloropsis gaditana CCMP527 and Nannochloropsis salina CCMP537 emerged as the two most promising strains, with an oil content of 37 and 27 dry wt% after 11-day nitrogen starvation, respectively, resulting in TAG productivity of 13 × 10 −3 and 18 × 10 −3 kg m −3 d −1 , respectively. Biodiesel with improved yield was produced from microalgae biomass under simultaneous cooling and microwave heating (SCMH). Nannochloropsis sp. and Tetraselmis sp. which were known to contain higher lipid species were used. The yield obtained using this novel technique was compared with the conventional heating (CH) and microwave heating (MWH) as the control method. The results revealed that the yields obtained using the novel SCMH were higher; Nannochloropsis sp. (83.33%) and Tetraselmis sp. (77.14%) than the control methods. Maximum yields were obtained using SCMH when the microwave was set at 50 °C, 800 W, 16 h of reaction with simultaneous cooling at 15 °C; and water content and lipid to methanol ratio in reaction mixture was kept to 0 and 1:12 respectively. GC analysis depicted that the biodiesel produced from this technique has lower carbon components (<19 C) and has both reasonable CN and IV reflecting good ignition and lubricating properties. In this study, the culture medium components screening and filtering were undertaken in order to set up efficient and cost effective minimal culture media for lipid production from Yarrowia lipolytica DSM3286. The basal minimal culture medium (S2) designed yielded lipid content up to 35% of the microbial dry cell weight. A set of fermentation strategies based on this minimal medium was developed and the lipid content was raised to 51%. The scale-up under different fermentation conditions based on S2 medium led to a maximum lipid content of 65%. The produced microbial oils displayed interesting properties to be used as a feedstock for high quality biodiesel production. The minimal media and operable cultivation strategies devised in this study, in association with the works done so far by other authors, could enable fast, massive, viable and more economical production of single cell oils and smooth biodiesel manufacture. The study explores on upstream and downstream process in Microcystis aeruginosa for biodiesel production. The alga was isolated from temple tank, acclimatized and successfully mass cultivated in open raceway pond at semi-continuous mode. A two step combined process was designed and harvested 99.3% of biomass, the daily dry biomass productivity was recorded up to 28 g m –2 day −1 . The lipid extraction was optimized and achieved 21.3%; physicochemical properties were characterized and found 11.7% of FFA, iodine value 72% and 99.2% of ester content. The lipid was transesterified by a two step simultaneous process and produced 90.1% of biodiesel; the calorific value of the biodiesel was 38.8 MJ/kg. Further, the physicochemical properties of biodiesel was characterized and found to be within the limits of American ASTM D6751. Increasing energy demand and depleting fossil fuel sources have intensified the focus on biofuel production. Microalgae have emerged as a desirable source for biofuel production because of high biomass and lipid production from waste water source. In this study, five microalgae were isolated from effluents of Nisargruna biogas plants. These isolates were identified based on morphology and partial 18S and 23S rRNA gene sequences. Growth and lipid accumulation potential of these microalgae were investigated. One isolate, Chlorella sp. KMN3, accumulated high biomass (1.59 ± 0.05 g L −1 ) with moderate lipid content (20%), while another isolate Monoraphidium sp. KMN5 showed moderate biomass accumulation of 0.65 ± 0.05 g L −1 with a very high (35%) lipid content. The fatty acid methyl esters mainly composed of C-16:0, C-18:0, C-18:1 and C-18:2. Benefiting from its unique advantages such as rapid and low cost, water-plasma strategy can disrupt microalgal cell wall and can thus greatly affect lipid extraction. As a result, assisted with the TPP method, excellent performance lipid recovery (74.34%) was obtained at 200 W in 10 min. The performance was superior to that achieved through cell disruption via water-plasma pretreatment. Yeast lipids from low-cost renewable feedstock are valuable resources for oleochemicals thus enabling circular chemistry. Current study focuses on lipid and volatile fatty acid (VFA) production through dual-stage fermentation of spentwash in a biorefinery framework with Trichosporon cutaneum (Tc) and Yarrowia lipolytica (Yl). During cell proliferation phase, Tc and Yl accumulated 2.9 and 2.5 g/L of dry biomass respectively in acid-hydrolysed spentwash (AHSW) and produced 16 and 5.5 g/L of total VFA respectively. Lipid yields (29.8%) and lipid titres (0.89 g/L) were higher in Tc /AHSW, when compared to Yl indicating the efficacy of Tc in spentwash bioremediation. Lipid accumulation was enhanced to 35% in Tc /AHSW, in presence of 0.05% NH 4 Cl due to oxidative stress of ammonium ions. Analysis of fatty acid composition revealed the presence of higher oleic acid, which is ideal for biodiesel production. The expanding use of fossil fuels has caused concern in terms of both energy security and environmental issues. Therefore, attempts have been made worldwide to promote the development of renewable energy sources, among which biofuel is especially attractive. Compared to other biofuels, lipid-derived biofuels have a higher energy density and better compatibility with existing infrastructure, and their performance can be readily improved by adjusting the chemical composition of lipid feedstocks. This review thus addresses the intrinsic interactions between lipid feedstocks and lipid-based biofuels, including biodiesel, and renewable equivalents to conventional gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Advancements in lipid-associated biofuel technology, as well as the properties and applicability of various lipid sources in terms of biofuel production, are also discussed. Furthermore, current progress in lipid production and profile optimization in the context of plant lipids, microbial lipids, and animal fats are presented to provide a wider context of lipid-based biofuel technology. The potential of nitrogen sources supplementing domestic wastewater for the cultivation of microalgae was assessed. Urea, potassium nitrate, sodium nitrate and ammonium nitrate were evaluated for their effect on cultivation and lipid production of Chlorella sorokiniana . Urea showed the highest biomass yield of 0.220 g L -1 and was selected for further experimentation. Urea concentrations (0-10 g L -1 ) were assessed for their effect on growth and microalgal physiology using pulse amplitude modulated fluorometry. A concentration of 1.5 g L -1 urea produced 0.218 g L -1 biomass and 61.52% lipid by relative fluorescence. Physiological stress was evident by the decrease in relative Electron Transport Rate from 10.45 to 6.77 and quantum efficiency of photosystem II charge separation from 0.665 to 0.131. Gas chromatography analysis revealed that C16:0, C18:0, C18:1, C18:2 and C18:3 were the major fatty acids produced by C. sorokiniana .
