Consortia of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria (AHB) are appealing as sustainable alternative protein ingredient for aquaculture given their high nutritional qualities, and their production potential on feed-grade industrial wastewater. Today, the impacts of pre-treatment, bioprocess choice and key parameter settings on AHB productivity and nutritional properties are unknown. This study investigated for the first time AHB microbial protein production effects based on (i) raw vs anaerobically fermented brewery wastewater, (ii) high-rate activated sludge (HRAS) without vs with feast-famine conditions, and (iii) three short solid retention time (SRT): 0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 d. High biomass (4.4–8.0 g TSS/L/d) and protein productivities (1.9–3.2 g protein/L/d) were obtained while achieving COD removal efficiencies up to 98 % at SRT 0.50 d. The AHB essential amino acid (EAA) profiles were above rainbow trout requirements, excluding the S-containing EAA, highlighting the AHB biomass replacement potential for unsustainable fishmeal in salmonid diets.

Purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) are a novel driver to recover organics and nutrients from wastewater by assimilative growth. Depending on the source, assimilated resources from the PPB biomass can still be recovered after a releasing step. Anaerobic digestion (AD) releases carbonand nutrients, but the release is incomplete. Thermal hydrolysis (TH) as a pretreatment before AD improves the digestibility, release, and subsequent recovery potentials. This work determines the effects of TH in batch and continuous modes regarding methane potential, nutrients' release efficiencies, volatile solids destruction, degradability, and hydrolysis rates. Discarding Lonicera japonica Thunb. (LJT) residues containing many active metabolites create tremendous waste. This study aimed to effectively use LJT residues by anaerobic fermentation. Fermentation significantly decreased the pH values and reduced the abundance of undesirable bacteria (potential pathogenic and biofilm-forming) while increasing Lactobacillus abundance. Compound additive use further improved fermentation quality (significantly increased the lactic acid (LA) content and decreased the pH values and ammonia nitrogen (a-N) content) and nutrient quality (significantly decreased the acid detergent fiber (ADF) content and increased the water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) content) and optimized the microbial community (increased the Lactobacillus abundance). Fermentation also altered the flavonoids, alkaloids and phenols contents in the residues with minor effects on the functional metabolites amounts. The LJT residues metabolic profile was mainly attributed to its epiphytic bacteria, with a small contribution from the compound additive. Thus, compound additives may improve anaerobic LJT residue fermentation without functionally impairing the metabolites.

The study aims to prove that the addition of graphene oxide (GO) improves anaerobic digestion (AD) kinetic performance. Classical batch tests were modified to a fed-batch strategy at four GO levels while using two substrates (glucose and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC)). First-order and modified Gompertz models were respectively applied to evaluate the kinetic performance. The unprecedented demand for seafood has resulted in land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), a highly intensive but sustainable fish farming method. However, intensification also results in concentrated waste streams of fecal matter and uneaten feed. Harvesting and processing vast quantities of fish also leads to the production of byproducts, further creating disposal challenges for fish farms. Recent research indicates that anaerobic digestion (AD), often used for waste treatment in agricultural and wastewater industries, may provide a viable solution. Limited research on AD of freshwater, brackish, and saline wastewater from RAS facilities and co-digestion of seafood byproducts has shown promising results but with considerable operational and process stability issues. This review discusses challenges to AD due to low solid concentrations, salinity, low carbon/nitrogen ratio, and high lipid content in the waste streams. Opportunities for recovering valuable biomolecules and nutrients through microbial treatment, aquaponics, microalgae, and polyhydroxyalkanoate production are also discussed.

To investigate the effects of lactic acid bacteria inoculant (LI) and abandoned rhubarb stalk (RS) on the anaerobic fermentation and bacterial community of alfalfa on the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau, the alfalfa was harvested and ensiled without (control) or with LI and RS at ambient temperature (5 ∼ 15℃) for 90 days. Addition of RS at ensiling increased (P 0.05) lactate, acetate and propionate contents, and decreased (P 0.05) the final pH value as compared with control. Addition of RS increased (P 0.05) the bacterial alpha diversity indices, while inherent Lactococcus lactis and/or Lactobacillus sakei dominated the anaerobic fermentation. In particular, addition of RS restricted the growth of yeasts and Lactobacillales at the early stage of ensiling, but continuously stimulated anaerobic fermentation. These indicates that RS could be used as additive to facilitate anaerobic fermentation of alfalfa.

Thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP), as a step prior to sludge anaerobic digestion (AD), is widely applied due to its effectiveness in enhancing organic solids hydrolysis and subsequent biogas productivity. However, THP also induces a series of problems including formation of refractory compounds in THP cylinder, high residual ammonia and organic in the AD centrate, inhibition on downstream nitrogen removal process and reduction in UV-disinfection effectiveness during post-treatment. More attention should be paid on how to mitigate these negative effects. Despite intensive studies were carried out to reduce refractory compounds formation and enhance biological performance, there is limited effort to discuss the solutions to tackle the THP associated problems in a holistic manner. This paper summarizes the solutions developed to date and analyzes their technology readiness to assess application potential in full-scale settings. The content highlights the limitations of THP and proposes potential solutions to address the technological challenges.

Novel sandwich-structured carriers were developed for fast immobilizing anammox sludge, with which a fixed-film membrane bioreactor was further established for treating municipal wastewater. Results showed that fast start-up of the fixed-film reactor with anammox bacteria could be achieved without lag phase, indicated by the respective nitrogen removal efficiency and rate of 70.58 ± 0.66% and 0.12 g N/(L·d). Meanwhile, low membrane fouling 0.0017 bar/hour was also observed. The activity of anammox sludge fixed in the novel carriers gradually stabilized at the level of 6.59 mg N/(g VSS·h), while Candidatus Kuenenia as the dominant anammox bacteria were enriched from the initial abundance of 15.16% to 39.12% after a long-term operation. Consequently, it was demonstrated that the sandwich-structured carriers developed in this study could offer a promising alternative for fast immobilization and start-up of mainstream anammox process. Current mechanistic anaerobic digestion (AD) models cannot accurately represent the underlying processes occurring during food waste (FW) AD. This work presents an update of the Anaerobic Digestion Model no. 1 (ADM1) to provide accurate estimations of free ammonia concentrations and related inhibition thresholds, and model syntrophic acetate oxidation as acetate-consuming pathway. A modified Davies equation predicted NH3 concentrations and pH more accurately, and better estimated associated inhibitory limits. Sensitivity analysis results showed the importance of accurate disintegration kinetics and volumetric mass transfer coefficients, as well as volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and hydrogen uptake rates. In contrast to the default ADM1, the modified ADM1 could represent methane production and VFA profiles simultaneously (particularly relevant for propionate uptake). The modified ADM1 was also able to predict the predominant acetate-consuming and methane-producing microbial clades. The ecological roles of microbial communities and how they interact with each other in thermal hydrolysis process (THP) assisted thermophilic anaerobic digestion (THP-AD) reactors remain largely unknown, especially under propionate stress. Two thermophilic THP-AD reactors had methane yield of 240-248 mL/g VSadded, but accumulated approximately 2000 mg/L propionate. Genome-centric metagenomics analysis showed that 68 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) were recovered, 32 MAGs of which were substantially enriched. Firmicutes spp. dominated the enriched microbial community, including hydrolytic/fermentative bacteria and syntrophs. Methanogenic activities were mainly mediated by Methanosarcina sp. and Methanothermobacter spp. In addition to hydrogenotrophic methanogens, Thermodesulfovibrio sp. could also be a vital H2 scavenger, contributing to maintaining low H2 partial pressure in the bioreactors. The remarkable accumulation of propionate could be likely attributed to the weak syntrophic propionate-oxidizing activity or its absence. These findings advanced our knowledge about the mutualistic symbiosis of carbon metabolism in thermophilic THP-AD reactors. Biogas production and municipal wastewater COD removal at low temperatures by granulated anaerobic biomass were investigated. Two anaerobic granule reactors were operated continuously for 1025 days by stepwise increase of organic loading from 1.3 to 15.2 g CODdissolved·l−1·d−1 at 25, 16, 12, 8.5, 5.5, and 2.5 °C. The sustained reactor performance was evaluated by COD removal efficiency, methane production, and microbial community analysis. Stable COD removal of 50–70% were achieved at 25–8.5 °C and up to 15 g CODdissolved·l−1·d−1, and no significant temperature effect was observed on specific methane production rate and yield. Below 8.5 °C, COD removal and methane yields reduced, but still significant methane formation was observed even at 2.5 °C. More than 90% of COD removed was converted to methane. Methanogenic archaea communities showed that temperature changes affected the major methane formation pathways, which explains temperature adaptability of the granules.

Anaerobic gut fungi (AGF) are lignocellulose degraders that naturally form biofilms in the rumen of large herbivores and in standard culture techniques. While biofilm formation enhances biomass degradation and carbohydrate-active enzyme (CAZyme) production in some bacteria and aerobic fungi, gene expression and metabolism in AGF biofilms have not been compared to non-biofilm cultures. Here, using the tunable morphology of the non-rhizoidal AGF, Caecomyces churrovis, the impacts of biofilm formation on AGF gene expression, metabolic flux, growth rate, and xylan degradation rate are quantified to inform future industrial scale-up efforts. Contrary to previous findings, C. churrovis upregulated catabolic CAZymes in stirred culture relative to biofilm culture. Using a de novo transcriptome, 197 new transcripts with predicted CAZyme function were identified. Stirred cultures grew and degraded xylan significantly faster than biofilm-forming cultures with negligible differences in primary metabolic flux, offering a way to accelerate AGF biomass valorization without altering the fermentation product profile. The rhizoidal AGF, Neocallimastix lanati, also grew faster with stirring on a solid plant substrate, suggesting that the advantages of stirred C. churrovis cultures may apply broadly to other AGF.

To investigate the effect of ambient ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau on anaerobic fermentation and subsequent methane emissions, oats grown under different ambient UV conditions (UV1, 100% ambient UV radiation; UV2, 50% ambient UV radiation) were fermented with molasses and Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) inoculant treatments. The UV2 treatment increased (P 0.05) epiphytic bacterial counts and reduced (P 0.05) the water-soluble carbohydrate contents of oat. Both the UV2 treatment and the LP inoculant substantially increased the abundance of Lactobacillus and inhibited detrimental microorganisms (enterobacteria and yeasts) during anaerobic fermentation, resulting in the absence of butyric acid. The UV2 treatment increased (P 0.05) the acid detergent fiber contents after anaerobic fermentation and indirectly increased (P 0.05) methane emissions by 8.52-14.69% during in vitro ruminal digestion. This study demonstrated that low ambient UV radiation during cultivation facilitated anaerobic fermentation and consequently enhanced subsequent methane emissions from the rumen.

The stability of dry anaerobic digestion (AD) of food waste (FW) as well as the resulting methane gas generation was investigated from the perspective of system dynamics. Various organic loading rates were applied to the system by modifying the water content in the FW feed and solid retention time (SRT). The excessive organic loading due to the accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from the feed with 80% water content during the short SRT (15 and 20 d) caused system failure. In contrast, more intermediate materials, such as VFAs, was easily converted into methane at higher water contents. In addition, the biogas production rate of dry AD was effectively predicted based on SRT, soluble chemical oxygen demand, total VFA, total ammonia, and free ammonia using a recurrent neural network-the so-called "black-box" model. This implies the feasibility of applying this data-based black-box model for controlling and optimizing complex biological processes.

The influence of hydraulic retention time (HRT of 3–5 h) and temperature (20–25 °C) on performance and microbial dynamics of two pilot-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors with different granule size distribution (UASB1 = 3–4 mm and UASB2 = 1–2 mm) were investigated for 217 days. Increasing the HRT to 5 h even at a lower temperature of 20 °C enhanced COD removal and biogas production with average of 59 ± 16% (up to 85%) and 73 ± 9 L/(m3·d) (up to 102 L/(m3·d)) for UASB1; 63 ± 16% (up to 85%) and 75 ± 9 L/(m3·d) (up to 90 L/(m3·d)) for UASB2, respectively. This is explained by sufficient contact time between microorganisms and substrate. Acetoclastic methanogenic activity was higher in UASB1 because Methanosaetaceae (produces methane from acetate) dominated (64 ± 4%). However, Methanoregulaceae (29 ± 3%) and Methanomicrobiales_unassigned (20 ± 6%) which produce methane from H2/CO2 and formate were significant in UASB2. The extent of change in the microbial dynamics with HRT and temperature was more obvious in the smaller granule reactor.

Unspecific microorganisms consortia are normally used in anaerobic biodegradation of solid wastes. However, these consortia can be tuned to optimally obtain determined bioproducts. In this study, high value-added products and biogas were obtained via an innovative two-stage anaerobic bioprocess from microalgae biomass. The anaerobic fermentation (AF) entailed the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and subsequently, only the solid spent of AF effluent was valorized for methane production via conventional anaerobic digestion (AD). Applied conditions in AF (25 °C, HRT 8 days) favored Firmicutes predominance (64%) enabling a conversion efficiency of 32.1% g SCFAs-COD/g CODin. Opposite, a wider microbial biodiversity was determined in the AD reactor (35 °C, HRT 20 days), being mainly composed by Firmicutes (28.6%), Euryarchaeota (17.7%) and Proteobacteria (15.3%). AD of the AF-solid spent reached 168.9 mL CH4 /g CODin. Strikingly, operational conditions imposed mediated a microbial specialization that maximized product output.

In this study, biogas was produced from the anaerobic co-digestion of Cocoa pod husk (CPH) and poultry manure. Pretreatment of the CPH was carried out using sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The physicochemical, elemental and structural analyses were carried out on the CPH before and after pretreatment. The microbial composition of the fermenting materials were also determined using standard method while the Fourier Transform Infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to identify the structural changes that took place after pretreatments. Use of alkaline hydrogen peroxide caused high solubilization of the lignin component of the CPH and reduced up to 81% of lignin i.e. initial value of 21.7% m.m-1 to final value of 4.2% m.m-1. Similarly, the alkali reduced the hemicellulose content of the CPH from 27.0% m.m-1 to 8.5% m.m-1. Overall, there was 68% increase in biogas volume from the alkaline pretreated CPH.

© 2019 Elsevier Ltd This study investigated the impact of mixing on key factors including foaming, substrate stratification, methane production and microbial community in three full scale anaerobic digesters. Digester foaming was observed at one plant that co-digested sewage sludge and food waste, and was operated without mixing. The lack of mixing led to uneven distribution of total chemical oxygen demand (tCOD) and volatile solid (VS) as well as methane production within the digester. 16S rRNA gene-based community analysis clearly differentiated the microbial community from the top and bottom. By contrast, foaming and substrate stratification were not observed at the other two plants with internal circulation mixing. The abundance of methanogens (Methanomicrobia) at the top was about four times higher than at the bottom, correlating to much higher methane production from the top verified by ex-situ biomethane assay, causing foaming. This result is consistent with foaming potential assessment of digestate samples from the digester.

Energy-efficient biogas reactors are often designed and operated mimicking natural microbial ecosystems such as the digestive tracts of ruminants. Anaerobic fungi play a crucial role in the degradation of lignocellulose-rich fiber thanks to their high cellulolytic activity. Fungal bioaugmentation is therefore at the heart of our understanding of enhancing anaerobic digestion (AD). The efficiency of bioaugmentation with anaerobic fungus Orpinomyces sp. was evaluated in lignocellulose-based AD configurations. Fungal bioaugmentation increased the methane yield by 15-33% during anaerobic co-digestion of cow manure and selected cereal crops/straws. Harvesting stage of the crops was a decisive parameter to influence methane production together with fungal bioaugmentation. A more efficient fermentation process in the bioaugmented digesters was distinguished by relatively-higher abundance of Synergistetes, which was mainly represented by the genus Anaerobaculum. On the contrary, the composition of the methanogenic archaea did not change, and the majority of methanogens was assigned to Methanosarcina.

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd This study aims to investigate the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from low strength wastewater at various hydraulic retention time (HRT) and organic loading rate (OLR) in a continuous anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) using glucose as carbon source. This experiment was performed without any selective inhibition of methanogens and the reactor pH was maintained at 7.0 ± 0.1. 48, 24, 18, 12, 8 and 6 h-HRTs were applied and the highest VFA concentration was recorded at 8 h with an overall VFA yield of 48.20 ± 1.21 mg VFA/100 mg COD feed . Three different ORLs were applied (350, 550 and 715 mg COD feed ) at the optimum 8 h-HRT. The acetic and propanoic acid concentration maximums were (1.1845 ± 0.0165 and 0.5160 ± 0.0141 mili-mole/l respectively) at 550 mg COD feed . The isobutyric acid concentration was highest (0.3580 ± 0.0407 mili-mole/l) at 715 mg COD feed indicating butyric-type fermentation at higher organic loading rate.

In situ synthesis of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) was proved to be an effective way to extract short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) from anaerobic fermentation liquid (AFL) as carbon source for biodenitrification, but the SCFAs content in SCFAs-LDH was unsatisfactory because of the existence of much carbonate in AFL. Pretreatment of AFL with calcium addition was investigated to remove carbonate and improve SCFAs extraction via LDHs synthesis. Results of batch tests showed that, the carbonate removal efficiency was as high as 76.6% when the calcium addition was 0.06 mol/L at pH 12. When using the optimal SCFAs/Al3+ ratio of 3.0, the total SCFAs content in SCFAs-LDH with pretreatment was improved to 46.5 mg COD/g LDH, which was 4.5 times of the control (10.4 mg COD/g LDH). These results suggest that adding calcium to AFL was an effective way to eliminate the negative effect of carbonates on SCFAs-LDH synthesis.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a bioprocess technology that integrates into circular economy systems, which produce renewable energy and biofertilizer whilst reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, improvements in biogas production efficiency are needed in dealing with lignocellulosic biomass. The state-of-the-art of AD technology is discussed, with emphasis on feedstock digestibility and operational difficulty. Solutions to these challenges including for pre-treatment and bioaugmentation are reviewed. This article proposes an innovative integrated system combining alkali pre-treatment, temperature-phased AD and bioaugmentation techniques. The integrated system as modelled has a targeted potential to achieve a biodegradability index of 90% while increasing methane production by 47% compared to conventional AD. The methane productivity may also be improved by a target reduction in retention time from 30 to 20 days. This, if realized has the potential to lower energy production cost and the levelized cost of abatement to facilitate an increased resource of sustainable commercially viable biomethane.

Energy-rich sludge can be obtained from primary clarifiers preceding biological reactors. Alternatively, the incoming wastewater can be sent to a very-high-loaded activated sludge system, i.e., a so-called A-stage. However, the effects of applying an A-stage instead of a primary clarifier, on the subsequent sludge digestion for long-term operation is still unknown. In this study, biogas production and permeate quality, and filterability characteristics were investigated in a lab-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor for primary sludge and A-stage sludge (A-sludge) treatment. A higher specific methane yield was obtained from digestion of A-sludge compared to primary sludge. Similarly, specific methanogenic activity was higher when the anaerobic membrane bioreactor was fed with A-sludge compared to primary sludge. Plant-wide mass balance analysis indicated that about 35% of the organic matter in wastewater was recovered as methane by including an A-stage, compared to about 20% with a primary clarifier.

This paper reviewed the mechanisms of biochar in relieving ammonia inhibition. Biochar affects nitrogen-rich waste's anaerobic digestion (AD) performance through four ways: promotion of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) and microbial growth, adsorption, pH buffering, and provision of nutrients. Biochar enhances the DIET pathway by acting as an electron carrier. The role of DIET in relieving ammonia nitrogen may be exaggerated because many related studies don't provide definite evidence. Therefore, some bioinformatics technology should be used to assist in investigating DIET. Biochar absorbs ammonia nitrogen by chemical adsorption (electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, and complexation) and physical adsorption. The absorption efficiency, mainly affected by the properties of biochar, pH and temperature of AD, can reach 50 mg g−1 on average. The biochar addition can buffer pH by reducing the concentrations of VFAs, alleviating ammonia inhibition. In addition, biochar can release trace elements and increase the bioavailability of trace elements.

Recently, digestate disintegration gained interest as an alternative strategy to feedstock pretreatment for anaerobic digestion. This study evaluated the effect of three different digestate disintegration methods (hydrogen peroxidation, ozone treatment and ultrasound) on manure digestate, potato waste digestate and mixed organic waste digestate. Lab-scale anaerobic digestion experiments were carried out by adding disintegrated digestate to the related substrate and inoculum with simulated recycle ratios of 0.2 and 0.5. Ultrasound disintegration of potato waste digestate yields 22.5% increase in biogas production. An increase in biogas production was linked to the treated digestate amount and the treatment dosage. First order model was used to investigate the effect of digestate disintegration on the first order reaction rate constant (k). The decrease in k and increase in biogas production were linearly correlated. The system was operated with OLR up to 18.2 g COD (L d)−1 and effluent recirculation. Methane production and effluent characteristics were monitored. The microbial composition was examined through next-generation sequencing and qPCR from the anaerobic sludge of the first reactor (R1) operated at low and high OLR. The system showed operational stability, obtaining a maximum methane production of 2.2 L CH4 (L d)−1, with a removal efficiency of COD and phenolic compounds of 84 and 73%, respectively. The performance of R1 at high OLR in steady conditions was associated with an appropriate proportion of nutrients (particularly Fe) and a marked increase of the syntrophic bacteria Syntrophus and Candidatus Cloacimonas, and acetoclastic and hydrogenotrophic methanogens, mainly Methanosaeta, Methanoculleus, Methanobacterium and Methanomassiliicoccus. This study investigated a novel bioreactor configuration coupled with a side-stream dynamic membrane (DM) for Anammox enrichment as an alternative for conventional membrane. Bioreactor was fed with synthetic feed and seeded with a mix of anaerobic and aerobic sludge. In situ mechanical cleaning was employed for DM cleaning. DM development and performance was analysed over two polyamide-nylon meshes (200 and 52 µm). Solid-liquid separation of 52 µm mesh outperformed 200 µm with an average effluent turbidity of 2.4 ± 0.1 NTU. The system was operated at a maximum nitrogen loading rate of 696 mg-N L−1 d−1 and achieved a maximum nitrogen removal rate of 611.6 mg-N L−1 d−1. At steady state, the average ammonium, nitrite and total nitrogen removal efficiencies were 87 ± 0.6%, 98.5 ± 0.15% and 87.5 ± 0.56% respectively. Digital realtime PCR Sequence analysis showed that Planctomycetales belonging to ascertained Anammox-specific genera progressively increased their presence in the reactor consistently with its nitrogen removal performance. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

The aim of this work was to evaluate the bioenergy potential of cocoa residue via anaerobic digestion. Batch and fed-batch lab-scale reactors were operated under low and high solids conditions. In the batch tests, 59 ± 4% of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) was recovered as methane. This corresponded with an average methane yield of 174 (wet) and 193 (dry) L kg-1 volatile solids fed, whereas a series of fed-batch reactors produced 70 ± 24 (wet) and 107 ± 39 (dry) L CH4 kg-1 volatile solids fed during stable conditions. A case study was developed for canton Balao (Ecuador) based on our experimental data, operational estimates and available cocoa waste in the area. Annually, 8341 MWh could be produced, meeting 88% of the current electricity demand in Balao. Although the high nitrogen content of chicken manure (CM) poses major challenges for methane production through anaerobic digestion, on the bright side, it has a great potential for production of value-added intermediate products, such as volatile fatty acids (VFAs). However, in order to enhance VFAs yield, methane formation should be substantially suppressed. In the current research, individual and multiple effects of initial pH, heat-shock pretreatment, chemical methanogens inhibitor and the inoculum to substrate ratio (ISR) on optimization VFAs fermentation from CM were evaluated via batch assays. In this regard, the highest net VFAs yield, 0.53 g-VFA/g-VS, was achieved at conditions with heat-shocked inoculum and CM at ISR 1:6 and pH uncontrolled. Acetate dominated the VFAs mixture, accounting for up to 75% of total. Increased inoculum content enhanced the bioconversion efficiency to 78% at ISR 1:3. The study results suggest that alkalinity is a key promoter of VFAs production from CM.

Graphical abstract, Highlights • Low-temperature biochars doubled biomethane production rate and enhanced yields. • Seaweed biochars and hydrochars from various feedstocks reduced biomethane yields. • Biochars with high levels of oxygen surface groups favoured biomethane augmentation., The augmentation of biochar produced at 450 and 600–650 °C and hydrochar produced at 250 °C has been investigated using biochemical methane potential experiments of cellulose. The feedstocks used for the char production included the lignocellulosic (oak wood), macroalgae (Fucus serratus) and aquatic plant (water hyacinth). Biomethane production was improved with the addition of lower-temperature biochars from oak wood (285 mL CH4/g VS) and water hyacinth (294 mL CH4/g VS), corresponding to 7 and 11% more than the control. The addition of these two biochars increased the methane production rate of 2.4 and 2.3 times the control, respectively. Higher temperature biochars showed no difference. Conversely, all hydrochars and macroalgae biochars augmentation reduced methane generation by 57–86 %. The chemical and structural composition of each of the chars differed significantly. Surface oxygen functionality appears to be the most important property of the biochars that improved digestion performance.

Thermophilic and hyper-thermophilic anaerobic digestion (AD) are promising techniques for the treatment of concentrated black water (toilet fraction of domestic wastewater collected by low flush volume toilets; BW), recovery of nutrients and simultaneous pathogen removal for safe recovery and reuse of those nutrients. This study showed that thermophilic AD (55 °C) of concentrated BW reaches the same methanisation and COD removal as mesophilic anaerobic treatment of BW (conventional vacuum toilets) and kitchen waste while applying a higher loading rate (OLR) (2.5–4.0 kgCOD/m3/day). With a retention time of 8.7 days, and an OLR of >3 kgCOD/m3/day, COD removal of 70% and a methanisation of 62% (based on CODt) was achieved during thermophilic AD. Hyper-thermophilic (70 °C) reached lower levels of methanisation (38%). Start-up time of thermophilic AD was 12 days. And during thermophilic AD, a shift from acetoclastic methanogenesis towards syntrophic acetate oxidation was observed.

This work aimed to study the effects of biochar on methanogenesis and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) fate during anaerobic digestion (AD) of swine manure (SM) was investigated. Under the optimal biochar dosage of 5–10%, methane yield was significantly improved by 25%, ascribing to the enhancement of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET). Biochar addition alleviated the need of cytochrome-c as interspecies electron connection components and enriched the microbes involved in DIET. Defluviitoga, Thermovirga and Cloacibacillus were dominant with biochar addition and might participate in DIET together with Methanothrix. The abundance of parC, tetX, blaCTX-M, blaTEM, aac(6′)-Ib-cr, ermB and tetW were significantly reduced in biochar treatments and intI1 removal increased by 15% in B-5% than the control. Nanoparticle (NP) use can increase biological activity and adversely impact the environment. This study was the first to quantify biogas increases with NP mixtures during continuous anaerobic digestion (AD) of poultry litter and NP uptake in crops through tracking: 1) CH4 and H2S production from a NP mixture (Fe, Ni, and Co) in 30 L continuous digester (AD1) for 278 days compared to a control digester (AD2) without NP addition, 2) NP degradation during digestion, 3) using AD effluent with and without NP addition as a fertilizer, and 4) plant uptake of NPs. With NP inclusion, CH4 production increased by 23.7%, and H2S was reduced by 56.3%. The AD1 effluent had 1,160–19,400% higher NP concentrations and the lettuce biomass had 21.0–1,920% more NPs than lettuce fertilized with the AD2 effluent. This study showed that the effects of NPs remaining in the AD effluent must be considered.

Biomethane and biofertilizer production by anaerobic co-digestion of organic waste serves a promising method for reducing the environmental footprint of organic waste management. This study evaluated the techno-economic feasibility and environmental impacts of organic waste-to-biomethane development in Glasgow, UK using net present value (NPV) analysis and life cycle assessment. Four different biogas upgrading technologies (pressurized water scrubbing, chemical scrubbing, membrane separation, and pressure swing adsorption) were compared. The membrane separation technology-based biomethane production meets 0.8% of the gas demand for Glasgow households with a conversion efficiency of 83%. The organic waste-to-biomethane development saved up to 264 kg CO2-eq annually per tonne of waste treated, with an NPV ranged between £-9.0 million and £-12.0 million based on the upgrading technology. High costs for waste collection and transportation are primarily responsible for the negative NPV. Carbon taxes between £31.30 and £58.02 per tonne of CO2 are needed for economically viable biomethane production.

Highlights • Biochar addition improved biomethane yield particularly at less favourable ISR 0.5–0.9. • Biochar provided a buffering effect at lower ISR and C/N ratio. • Factorial regression model provided optimal anaerobic co-digestion conditions. • Biochar effect is highly dependent on the digestion conditions., The anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of microalgae is a prospective option for generating biomethane from renewable sources. This study investigates the effects of inoculum-to-substrate ratio (ISR), C/N ratio and biochar (BC) load on the AcoD of Chlorella vulgaris and cellulose. An initial augmentation of BC at ISR 0.5–0.9 and C/N ratio 10–30 offered a pH buffering effect and resulted in biomethane yields of 233–241 mL CH4/g VS, corresponding to 1.8–4.6 times the controls. BC addition ameliorated significantly AcoD, supporting the digestate stability at less favourable conditions. The effect of the process variables was further studied with a 23 factorial design and response optimisation. Under the design conditions, the variables had less influence over methane production. Higher ISRs and C/N ratios favoured AcoD, whereas increasing amounts of BC reduced biomethane yield but enhanced production rate. The factorial design highlighted the importance of BC-load on AcoD, establishing an optimum of 0.58 % (w/v).

Conventional sewage treatment applying activated sludge processes is energy-intensive and requires great financial input, hampering widespread implementation. The introduction of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR) followed by an algal reactor growing species of commercial interest, may present an alternative, contributing to the envisaged resource recovery at sewage treatment plants. AnMBRs can be applied for organic matter removal with energy self-sufficiency, provided that effective membrane fouling management is applied. Haematococcus pluvialis, an algal species with commercial value, can be selected for ammonium and phosphate removal. Theoretical analysis showed that good pollutant removal, positive financial output, as well as a significant reduction in the amount of hazardous activated sludge can be achieved by applying the proposed process, showing interesting advantages over current sewage treatment processes. Microbial contamination to H. pluvialis is a challenge, and technologies for preventing the contamination during continuous sewage treatment need to be applied.

Microbial pretreatments have been identified as a compatible and sustainable process with anaerobic digestion compared to energy-intensive physicochemical pretreatments. In this study, barley straw and hay co-substrate was pretreated with a microaerobic barley straw-adapted microbial (BSAM) consortium prior to anaerobic digestion. The improved digestibility was investigated through 16S rRNA gene sequencing, microbial counts and C:N ratios. BSAM pretreatment resulted in 15.2 L kg−1 TS of methane yield after 35 days, almost 40 times more than the control. The methane content in total biogas produced were 58% (v/v) and 10% (v/v) in BSAM and control, respectively. This research demonstrated that BSAM-based pretreatment significantly increased the digestibility and surface area of the lignocellulosic material and considerably enhanced biomethanation. This study generates new potential bio-research opportunities in the emerging field of lignocellulosic anaerobic digestion-biorefineries.

A simple biorefinery aimed at producing both biomethane (CH4) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), was proposed to valorize the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW). Anaerobic digestion (AD) was tested at different organic loading rates (OLR-I-II-III) (i.e. 3, 4 and 6 g L−1 d−1, respectively), producing biomethane and volatile fatty acids (VFAs)-rich digestate, the VFAs were then used to produce PHAs. Specific biogas and CH4 production remained similar when adopting different OLRs (biogas of 522–600 NL kg−1 VS and CH4 of 64–67% v/v). VFAs concentrated with OLR increases and their patterns were modified. PHA production was in the range of 117–199 g kg−1 OFMSWTS with the lowest production being associated to different polymer composition. The net energy recovery of this simple biorefinery accounted for 64% of OFMSW energy content, and the PHAs produced represented over 30% of the total energy.

This paper investigates the performance of AD in the presence of high-risk pharmaceuticals found in sewage sludge and its removal capacity. The digestion process of synthetic sewage sludge was observed in two 7L glass reactors (D1 and D2) at 38 °C (OLR 1.3 gVS L-1 d-1 and HRT 43 d). Environmentally relevant pharmaceuticals (clarithromycin, clotrimazole, erythromycin, fluoxetine, ibuprofen, sertraline, simvastatin and tamoxifen) were added in D2 at predicted environmental (sludge) conditions. The results demonstrated that long-term presence of pharmaceuticals can affect AD and induce instability resulting in an accumulation of VFAs. This study showed a concurrent effect on AD microbial composition, increasing the percentage of Firmicutes (>70%) and decreasing the percentages of Bacteroidetes and Euryarchaeota ( However, it seems that anaerobic microorganisms offer enhanced removal of the antibiotics clarithromycin and erythromycin over aerobic techniques.

Red mud-based inorganic polymer spheres were used as alternative pH regulators and process enhancers in sequencing batch anaerobic reactors treating cheese whey. This byproduct tends to quickly acidify under anaerobic conditions, and the common route to control pH and ensure suitable conditions for methane production involves the use of commercial alkaline raw materials. The spheres were synthesized using significant amounts of hazardous and toxic waste, red mud (50 wt% of solid components), whose recycling is challenging. The inorganic polymeric spheres, when compared to virgin alkaline raw materials, improved organic matter removal by 44%, prevented VFA accumulation (acidification degree less than 20%), maintained pH values in a range (6.5–7.2) to ensure maximum methanogenic activity by archaea microorganisms, and boosted the methane volume by ~90%. These promising results demonstrate the feasibility and performance advantages of using these innovative spheres instead of virgin raw materials, which is an important tool towards sustainable development.

This study investigates the integration of hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) with anaerobic digestion (AD) as a valorisation route for two macroalgae species; S. latissima (SL) and F. serratus (FS). HTC reactions were conducted at temperatures of 150 °C, 200 °C and 250 °C, with resulting hydrochars, process waters and hydrothermal slurries assessed for biomethane potential yields. Un-treated SL generated similar biomethane levels compared to all SL slurries. Whereas all FS slurries improved biomethane yields compared to un-treated FS. Hydrochars represent a greater energy carrier if used as a solid fuel, rather than a feedstock for anaerobic digestion. Integrating HTC and AD, through hydrochar combustion and process water digestion has a greater energetic output than anaerobic digestion of the un-treated macroalgae. Treatment at 150 °C, with separate utilisation of products, can improve the energetic output of S. latissima and F. serratus by 47% and 172% respectively, compared to digestion of the un-treated macroalgae.

Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) has great potential for closed-loop production in dairy industries via resource recovery from waste-streams. In the current study, the transition of VFA production from batch reactor to anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) by using cheese industry wastewater under alkali pH was evaluated with respect to seed sludge structure, microbial diversity and reactor type. The transition from the batch reactor to the ASBR demonstrated that the maximum VFA production yield (g COD/g SCOD) was comparable in two reactors (batch: 0.97; ASBR: 0.94), whereas, the dominant acid type was different (batch: 49% lactic acid; ASBR: 80% propionic acid). There was a significant correlation between the productions of butyric acid with Gracilibacteraceae and Desulfovibrionaceae; propionic acid with Desulfovibrionaceae and Synergistaceae; lactic acid with Pseudomonadaceae and Rhodocyclaceae. The high VFA production efficiency can be achieved by long term reactor operation, which enables the shift from industrial waste-streams to biorefineries.

Nanobubble water (NBW) has been proven to efficiently improve methane production from organic solid wastes. However, the increase in reactor volume due to addition of NBW hinders its practical applications. In this study, anaerobically digested sludge was first pre-augmented by N2-NBW and O2-NBW using corn straw as sole substrate for methane production with electron transfer activity being monitored. 20%, 33% and 38% of cellulose and 29%, 35% and 35% of hemicellulose were reduced respectively from the control, N2-NBW and O2-NBW pre-augmented sludge reactors. N2-NBW and O2-NBW pre-augmented sludge reactors achieved methane yields of 127 and 142 mL/g-VS, about 10% and 22% higher than that from the control. Results show that use of NBW pre-augmented anaerobically digested sludge as inoculum can remarkably enhance methane yield from corn straw, providing a novel concept for NBW-based anaerobic digestion system with no increase of reactor volume and construction cost in practice.

This study evaluates the microbial community development in the suspended sludge within a pilot-scale gas sparged Anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) under ambient conditions, as well as understand the influence of microbial signatures in the influent municipal wastewater on the bioreactor using amplicon sequence analysis. The predominant bacterial phyla comprised of Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Chloroflexi demonstrated resiliency with ambient temperature operation over a period of 472 days. Acetoclastic Methanosaeta were predominant during most of the AnMBR operation. Beta diversity analysis indicated that the microbial communities present in the influent wastewater did not affect the AnMBR core microbiome. Syntrophic microbial interactions were evidenced by the presence of the members from Synergistales, Anaerolineales, Clostridiales, and Syntrophobacterales. The proliferation of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) along with sulfate reduction underscored the competition of SRB in the AnMBR. Operational and environmental variables did not greatly alter the core bacterial population based on canonical correspondence analysis.

This study presents a novel denitratation/anammox biofilter (DABF) for nitrate removal from secondary effluent, where denitratation (NO3–→NO2–) is coupled with anammox (NO2– +NH4+→N2) instead of denitritation (NO2–→N2). Total nitrogen (TN) was removed by 81.90% in this DABF when the average effluent TN concentration was 7.82 mg/L. Meanwhile, organic carbon source consumption and backwash sludge production in the DABF were reduced by 63% and 70%, respectively, compared to conventional denitrifying biofilter (DNBF). Nitrogen banlance analysis indicates that 93% of the nitrogen gas produced in DABF was via anammox. Batch tests confirmed that the DABF biofilm reduced nitrite using ammonium as the electron donor, and accumulated nitrite during denitratation, thus providing nitrite for the anammox bacteria. Moreover, high-throughput sequencing approach also revealed that the anammox bacteria Candidatus Brocadia dominated the community, which could also be responsible for the stable processes in DABF by interacting with the other denitrifying bacteria.

White rot fungi using P. sajor-caju and T. versicolor was examined to pretreat raw champost (lignin-rich) and oyster champost (cellulose-rich) for enhancement of fermentative volatile fatty acid (VFA) production. Results showed that the efficiency of pretreatment and VFA production was influenced by the fungal strains and substrates. P. sajor-caju pretreatment showed preferential lignin degradation on raw champost and obtained the maximum VFA yield (203 ± 9 mg COD/g VSadded), which increased by 60% and 74% compared to that of control and unpretreated champost, respectively. For cellulose-rich oyster champost, however, fungal pretreatment decreased VFA yield compared to unpretreated champost. Further mechanisms analysis demonstrated the two strains grow and secreted ligninolytic enzymes, which substantially influenced the characteristics of two champosts such as cellulose/lignin ratio and morphology in different extents. P. sajor-caju was highly efficient to lignin-rich champost on selectively degrading lignin and further enhancing digestibility such as VFA production.

An assessment was carried out on the effect of temperature on the anaerobic digestion of Laminaria digitata biomass, in batch reactors (25, 35, 45 and 55 °C) with a hydraulic retention time of 40 days. The first order, modified Gompertz and logistics models were used to obtain the kinetic parameters of the biogas production process. Results indicate the chemical composition of the algae substrate could be written as C316H613O289N13S1, with a theoretical methane yield of 336 ± 0.86 L CH4 kg VS−1. Experimental methane yield obtained from the reactors for 25, 35, 45, and 55 °C were 318 ± 1.58, 293 ± 1.11, 271 ± 0.98 and 352 ± 0.63 mL CH4/gVS respectively. Their R2 > 0.90 indicate both models fits well for predicating kinetics of methane production. The lowest kh (0.31), high biodegradability index (0.96) and lag time (9.3–11.7 days) were obtained for 55 °C.

The effects of temperature and pH on volatile solid (VS) degradation and CH4 production of anaerobic digestion treating high-solid municipal dewatered sludge was studied. There were two single-phase reactors in Group 1: 35 and 55 °C reactors. In Group 2 (G2), acidification phase temperature was 55 °C or 70 °C and digestion phase temperature was 35 °C or 55 °C. G3 was set on the basis of G2 with the initial pH adjusted to 10.0. VS degradation ratio and CH4 generation ratio of G2 and G3 were higher than G1. In G2, acidification reactors did not show much difference on VS degradation and CH4 generation. Higher VS degradation ratio with higher CH4 generation ratio was get in extreme thermophilic/thermophilic-mesophilic systems. In G3, pH adjustment only promoted VS degradation and CH4 generation in acidification reactors when compared to G2, but the two ratios of the whole systems was not further enhanced.

Sawdust-based biochar prepared (SDBC) at three pyrolytic temperatures were compared as additives to mesophilic anaerobic digestion (AD). SDBC prepared at 500 °C performed better in enhancing CH4 production than other SDBCs. Analyzing the crucial electro-chemical characteristics of the SDBCs revealed that the excellent electron transfer capacity of SDBC was significant to stimulate methanogenesis promotion. A long-term semi-continuous operation further confirmed that adding SDBC to AD system increased the maximum organic loading rate (OLR) from 6.8 g VS/L/d to 16.2 g VS/L/d, which attributed to the extremely low volatile fatty acids (VFA) accumulation. Microbial community succession analysis found that SDBC addition altered both bacterial and archaea structure greatly. More importantly, the syntrophic and electro-active partners of Petrimonas and Methanosarcina synergistically enriched under high OLR condition were responsible for the high-efficient VFA degradation, which suggested that SDBC likely acted as redox-active mediator to facilitate direct interspecies electron transfer between the syntrophic partners for high-efficient syntrophic methanogenesis process.
