Background: Accurate automatic segmentation of the caudate nucleus in magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the brain is of great interest in the analysis of developmental disorders. Segmentation methods based on a single atlas or on multiple atlases have been shown to suitably localize caudate structure. However, the atlas prior information may not represent the structure of interest correctly. It may therefore be useful to introduce a more flexible technique for accurate segmentations., Method: We present CaudateCut: a new fully-automatic method of segmenting the caudate nucleus in MRI. CaudateCut combines an atlas-based segmentation strategy with the Graph Cut energy-minimization framework. We adapt the Graph Cut model to make it suitable for segmenting small, low-contrast structures, such as the caudate nucleus, by defining new energy function data and boundary potentials. In particular, we exploit information concerning the intensity and geometry, and we add supervised energies based on contextual brain structures. Furthermore, we reinforce boundary detection using a new multi-scale edgeness measure., Results: We apply the novel CaudateCut method to the segmentation of the caudate nucleus to a new set of 39 pediatric attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients and 40 control children, as well as to a public database of 18 subjects. We evaluate the quality of the segmentation using several volumetric and voxel by voxel measures. Our results show improved performance in terms of segmentation compared to state-of-the-art approaches, obtaining a mean overlap of 80.75%. Moreover, we present a quantitative volumetric analysis of caudate abnormalities in pediatric ADHD, the results of which show strong correlation with expert manual analysis., Conclusion: CaudateCut generates segmentation results that are comparable to gold-standard segmentations and which are reliable in the analysis of differentiating neuroanatomical abnormalities between healthy controls and pediatric ADHD.

Background: Human activity Recognition (HAR) using smartphone sensors suffers from two major problems: sensor orientation and placement. Sensor orientation and sensor placement problems refer to the variation in sensor signal for a particular activity due to sensors' altering orientation and placement. Extracting orientation and position invariant features from raw sensor signals is a simple solution for tackling these problems. Using few heuristic features rather than numerous time-domain and frequency-domain features offers more simplicity in this approach. The heuristic features are features which have very minimal effects of sensor orientation and placement. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of four simple heuristic features in solving the sensor orientation and placement problems using a 1D-CNN–LSTM model for a data set consisting of over 12 million samples. Methods: We accumulated data from 42 participants for six common daily activities: Lying, Sitting, Walking, and Running at 3-Metabolic Equivalent of Tasks (METs), 5-METs and 7-METs from a single accelerometer sensor of a smartphone. We conducted our study for three smartphone positions: Pocket, Backpack and Hand. We extracted simple heuristic features from the accelerometer data and used them to train and test a 1D-CNN–LSTM model to evaluate their effectiveness in solving sensor orientation and placement problems. Results: We performed intra-position and inter-position evaluations. In intra-position evaluation, we trained and tested the model using data from the same smartphone position, whereas, in inter-position evaluation, the training and test data was from different smartphone positions. For intra-position evaluation, we acquired 70–73% accuracy; for inter-position cases, the accuracies ranged between 59 and 69%. Moreover, we performed participant-specific and activity-specific analyses. Conclusions: We found that the simple heuristic features are considerably effective in solving orientation problems. With further development, such as fusing the heuristic features with other methods that eliminate placement issues, we can also achieve a better result than the outcome we achieved using the heuristic features for the sensor placement problem. Purpose: Convolution operator-based neural networks have shown great success in medical image segmentation over the past decade. The U-shaped network with a codec structure is one of the most widely used models. Transformer, a technology used in natural language processing, can capture long-distance dependencies and has been applied in Vision Transformer to achieve state-of-the-art performance on image classification tasks. Recently, researchers have extended transformer to medical image segmentation tasks, resulting in good models. Methods: This review comprises publications selected through a Web of Science search. We focused on papers published since 2018 that applied the transformer architecture to medical image segmentation. We conducted a systematic analysis of these studies and summarized the results. Results: To better comprehend the benefits of convolutional neural networks and transformers, the construction of the codec and transformer modules is first explained. Second, the medical image segmentation model based on transformer is summarized. The typically used assessment markers for medical image segmentation tasks are then listed. Finally, a large number of medical segmentation datasets are described. Conclusion: Even if there is a pure transformer model without any convolution operator, the sample size of medical picture segmentation still restricts the growth of the transformer, even though it can be relieved by a pretraining model. Tracking points in ultrasound (US) videos can be especially useful to characterize tissues in motion. Tracking algorithms that analyze successive video frames, such as variations of Optical Flow and Lucas–Kanade (LK), exploit frame-to-frame temporal information to track regions of interest. In contrast, convolutional neural-network (CNN) models process each video frame independently of neighboring frames. In this paper, we show that frame-to-frame trackers accumulate error over time. We propose three interpolation-like methods to combat error accumulation and show that all three methods reduce tracking errors in frame-to-frame trackers. On the neural-network end, we show that a CNN-based tracker, DeepLabCut (DLC), outperforms all four frame-to-frame trackers when tracking tissues in motion. DLC is more accurate than the frame-to-frame trackers and less sensitive to variations in types of tissue movement. The only caveat found with DLC comes from its non-temporal tracking strategy, leading to jitter between consecutive frames. Overall, when tracking points in videos of moving tissue, we recommend using DLC when prioritizing accuracy and robustness across movements in videos, and using LK with the proposed error-correction methods for small movements when tracking jitter is unacceptable. Background Disorders of rotator cuff tendons results in acute pain limiting the normal range of motion for shoulder. Of all the tendons in rotator cuff, supraspinatus (SSP) tendon is affected first of any pathological changes. Diagnosis of SSP tendon using ultrasound is considered to be operator dependent with its accuracy being related to operator's level of experience. Methods The automatic segmentation of SSP tendon ultrasound image was performed to provide focused and more accurate diagnosis. The image processing techniques were employed for automatic segmentation of SSP tendon. The image processing techniques combines curvelet transform and mathematical concepts of logical and morphological operators along with area filtering. The segmentation assessment was performed using true positives rate, false positives rate and also accuracy of segmentation. The specificity and sensitivity of the algorithm was tested for diagnosis of partial thickness tears (PTTs) and full thickness tears (FTTs). The ultrasound images of SSP tendon were taken from medical center with the help of experienced radiologists. The algorithm was tested on 116 images taken from 51 different patients. Results The accuracy of segmentation of SSP tendon was calculated to be 95.61% in accordance with the segmentation performed by radiologists, with true positives rate of 91.37% and false positives rate of 8.62%. The specificity and sensitivity was found to be 93.6%, 94% and 95%, 95.6% for partial thickness tears and full thickness tears respectively. The proposed methodology was successfully tested over a database of more than 116 US images, for which radiologist assessment and validation was performed. Conclusions The segmentation of SSP tendon from ultrasound images helps in focused, accurate and more reliable diagnosis which has been verified with the help of two experienced radiologists. The specificity and sensitivity for accurate detection of partial and full thickness tears has been considerably increased after segmentation when compared with existing literature. Background: Atherosclerosis causes millions of deaths, annually yielding billions in expenses round the world. Intravascular Optical Coherence Tomography (IVOCT) is a medical imaging modality, which displays high resolution images of coronary cross-section. Nonetheless, quantitative information can only be obtained with segmentation; consequently, more adequate diagnostics, therapies and interventions can be provided. Since it is a relatively new modality, many different segmentation methods, available in the literature for other modalities, could be successfully applied to IVOCT images, improving accuracies and uses.Method: An automatic lumen segmentation approach, based on Wavelet Transform and Mathematical Morphology, is presented. The methodology is divided into three main parts. First, the preprocessing stage attenuates and enhances undesirable and important information, respectively. Second, in the feature extraction block, wavelet is associated with an adapted version of Otsu threshold; hence, tissue information is discriminated and binarized. Finally, binary morphological reconstruction improves the binary information and constructs the binary lumen object.Results: The evaluation was carried out by segmenting 290 challenging images from human and pig coronaries, and rabbit iliac arteries; the outcomes were compared with the gold standards made by experts. The resultant accuracy was obtained: True Positive (%) = 99.29 ± 2.96, False Positive (%) = 3.69 ± 2.88, False Negative (%) = 0.71 ± 2.96, Max False Positive Distance (mm) = 0.1 ± 0.07, Max False Negative Distance (mm) = 0.06 ± 0.1.Conclusions: In conclusion, by segmenting a number of IVOCT images with various features, the proposed technique showed to be robust and more accurate than published studies; in addition, the method is completely automatic, providing a new tool for IVOCT segmentation. The article presents a study which focuses on the use of Fourier and ensemble averaging spectral analysis to compute dominant frequency (DF) analysis of videocapsule endoscopy images. DF analysis is used to discover small intestinal periodicities that may result from mechanical rhythms such as peristalsis.

Background: Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is a commonly used diagnostic imaging method for coronary artery disease. Virtual histology (VH) characterizes the plaque components into fibrous tissue (FT), fibro-fatty tissue (FFT), necrotic core (NC), or dense calcium (DC). However, VH can obtain only a single-frame image in one cardiac cycle, and specific software is needed to obtain the radio frequency data. This study proposed a novel intensity-based multi-level classification model for plaque characterization.Methods: The plaque-containing regions between the intima and the media-adventitia were segmented manually for all IVUS frames. A total of 54 features including first order statistics, grey level co-occurrence matrix, Law's energy measures, extended grey level run length matrix, intensity, and local binary pattern were estimated from the plaque-containing regions. After feature extraction, optimal features were selected using principle component analysis (PCA), and these were utilized as the input for the classification models. Plaque components were classified into FT, FFT, NC, or DC using an intensity-based multi-level classification model consisting of three different nets. Net 1 differentiated low-intensity components into FT/FFT and NC/DC groups. Then, net 2 subsequently divided FT/FFT into FT or FFT, whereas the remainder and high-intensity components were classified into NC or DC via net 3. To improve classification accuracy, each net utilized three different input features obtained by PCA. Classification performance was evaluated in terms of sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and receiver operating characteristic curve.Results: Quantitative results indicated that the proposed method showed significantly high classification accuracy for all tissue types. The classifiers had classification accuracies of 85.1%, 71.9%, and 77.2%, respectively, and the areas under the curve were 0.845, 0.704, and 0.783. In particular, the proposed method achieved relatively high sensitivity (82.0%) and specificity (87.1%) for differentiating between the FT/FFT and NC/DC groups.Conclusions: These results confirmed the clinical applicability of the proposed approach for IVUS-based tissue characterization.
