Purpose: Ultrashort echo time (UTE) sequences play a key role in imaging and quantifying short T2 species. However, almost all of the relevant studies was conducted at relatively high fields. The purpose of this work was to further explore the feasibility of UTE imaging and T2* measurement for short T2 species at low fields.Methods: A 2D UTE sequence with an echo time (TE) of 0.37 ms was developed on a 0.35 T permanent magnet scanner. This sequence acquires multiecho images to fit the monoexponential signal decay model for quantitative T2* calculations. In the phantom experiments, MnCl2 solutions with different T2* values were used to assess the curve fitting model in low fields. In the in vivo experiments, T2* measurements were performed on the Achilles tendon of five normal volunteers.Results: The phantom studies showed a significant linear relationship between the MnCl2 solution concentration and R2* (1/T2*) values, which indicated the stability and accuracy of the T2* quantification model. The in vivo studies demonstrated that mean T2* value of Achilles tendon is 1.83 ± 0.21 ms, and the mean coefficient of determination (R-squared) was 0.996.Conclusions: Both phantom and in vivo experiments showed that UTE imaging and quantification for short T2 components were feasible at low field 0.35 T scanner. Background: Metal objects implanted in the bodies of patients usually generate severe streaking artifacts in reconstructed images of X-ray computed tomography, which degrade the image quality and affect the diagnosis of disease. Therefore, it is essential to reduce these artifacts to meet the clinical demands.Methods: In this work, we propose a Gaussian diffusion sinogram inpainting metal artifact reduction algorithm based on prior images to reduce these artifacts for fan-beam computed tomography reconstruction. In this algorithm, prior information that originated from a tissue-classified prior image is used for the inpainting of metal-corrupted projections, and it is incorporated into a Gaussian diffusion function. The prior knowledge is particularly designed to locate the diffusion position and improve the sparsity of the subtraction sinogram, which is obtained by subtracting the prior sinogram of the metal regions from the original sinogram. The sinogram inpainting algorithm is implemented through an approach of diffusing prior energy and is then solved by gradient descent. The performance of the proposed metal artifact reduction algorithm is compared with two conventional metal artifact reduction algorithms, namely the interpolation metal artifact reduction algorithm and normalized metal artifact reduction algorithm. The experimental datasets used included both simulated and clinical datasets.Results: By evaluating the results subjectively, the proposed metal artifact reduction algorithm causes fewer secondary artifacts than the two conventional metal artifact reduction algorithms, which lead to severe secondary artifacts resulting from impertinent interpolation and normalization. Additionally, the objective evaluation shows the proposed approach has the smallest normalized mean absolute deviation and the highest signal-to-noise ratio, indicating that the proposed method has produced the image with the best quality.Conclusions: No matter for the simulated datasets or the clinical datasets, the proposed algorithm has reduced the metal artifacts apparently. Background: Noninvasive magnetic resonance thermometry (MRT) at low-field using proton resonance frequency shift (PRFS) is a promising technique for monitoring ablation temperature, since low-field MR scanners with open-configuration are more suitable for interventional procedures than closed systems. In this study, phase-drift correction PRFS with first-order polynomial fitting method was proposed to investigate the feasibility and accuracy of quantitative MR thermography during hyperthermia procedures in a 0.35 T open MR scanner.Methods: Unheated phantom and ex vivo porcine liver experiments were performed to evaluate the optimal polynomial order for phase-drift correction PRFS. The temperature estimation approach was tested in brain temperature experiments of three healthy volunteers at room temperature, and in ex vivo porcine liver microwave ablation experiments. The output power of the microwave generator was set at 40 W for 330 s. In the unheated experiments, the temperature root mean square error (RMSE) in the inner region of interest was calculated to assess the best-fitting order for polynomial fit. For ablation experiments, relative temperature difference profile measured by the phase-drift correction PRFS was compared with the temperature changes recorded by fiber optic temperature probe around the microwave ablation antenna within the target thermal region.Results: The phase-drift correction PRFS using first-order polynomial fitting could achieve the smallest temperature RMSE in unheated phantom, ex vivo porcine liver and in vivo human brain experiments. In the ex vivo porcine liver microwave ablation procedure, the temperature error between MRT and fiber optic probe of all but six temperature points were less than 2 °C. Overall, the RMSE of all temperature points was 1.49 °C.Conclusions: Both in vivo and ex vivo experiments showed that MR thermometry based on the phase-drift correction PRFS with first-order polynomial fitting could be applied to monitor temperature changes during microwave ablation in a low-field open-configuration whole-body MR scanner. Background: The challenge of reconstructing a sparse medical magnetic resonance image based on compressed sensing from undersampled k-space data has been investigated within recent years. As total variation (TV) performs well in preserving edge, one type of approach considers TV-regularization as a sparse structure to solve a convex optimization problem. Nevertheless, this convex optimization problem is both nonlinear and nonsmooth, and thus difficult to handle, especially for a large-scale problem. Therefore, it is essential to develop efficient algorithms to solve a very broad class of TV-regularized problems.Methods: In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm referred to as the fast linearized preconditioned alternating direction method of multipliers (FLPADMM), to solve an augmented TV-regularized model that adds a quadratic term to enforce image smoothness. Because of the separable structure of this model, FLPADMM decomposes the convex problem into two subproblems. Each subproblem can be alternatively minimized by augmented Lagrangian function. Furthermore, a linearized strategy and multistep weighted scheme can be easily combined for more effective image recovery.Results: The method of the present study showed improved accuracy and efficiency, in comparison to other methods. Furthermore, the experiments conducted on in vivo data showed that our algorithm achieved a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), lower relative error (Rel.Err), and better structural similarity (SSIM) index in comparison to other state-of-the-art algorithms.Conclusions: Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm exhibits superior performance in accuracy and efficiency than conventional compressed sensing MRI algorithms.
