Gravitational forces can induce deviations in body posture from desired configurations in multi-legged arboreal robot locomotion with low leg stiffness, affecting the contact angle between the swing leg's end-effector and the climbing surface during the gait cycle. The relationship between desired and actual foot positions is investigated here in a leg-stiffness-enhanced model under external forces, focusing on the challenge of unreliable end-effector attachment on climbing surfaces in such robots. Inspired by the difference in ceiling attachment postures of dead and living geckos, feedforward compensation of the stance phase legs is the key to solving this problem. A feedforward gravity compensation (FGC) strategy, complemented by leg coordination, is proposed to correct gravity-influenced body posture and improve adhesion stability by reducing body inclination. The efficacy of this strategy is validated using a quadrupedal climbing robot, EF-I, as the experimental platform. Experimental validation on an inverted surface (ceiling walking) highlights the benefits of the FGC strategy, demonstrating its role in enhancing stability and ensuring reliable end-effector attachment without external assistance. In the experiment, robots without FGC only completed 3 out of 10 trials, while robots with FGC achieved a 100% success rate in the same trials. The speed was substantially greater with FGC, achieving 9.2 mm s -1 in the trot gait. Geckos show versatility by rapidly maneuvering on diverse complex terrain because they benefit from their distributed, setae-covered toes and thus have the ability to generate reliable and adaptive attachment. Significant attention has been paid to their adhesive microstructures (setae), but the effectiveness of the gecko's adaptive attachment at the level of toes and feet remains unclear. In order to better understand the geckos' attachment, we first focused on the deployment of toes while challenging geckos to locomote on varying inclines. When the slope angle was less than 30°, their feet mainly interacted with the substrate using the bases of the toes and generated anisotropic frictional forces. As the slope angle increased to 90°, the participation of the toe bases was reduced. Instead, the setae contribution increased for the middle three toes of the front feet and for the first three toes of the hind feet. As the incline changed from vertical to inverted, the adhesive contribution of the toes of the front feet became more equal, whereas the effective adhesion contact of the hind feet gradually shifted to the toes oriented rearwards. Second, a mathematical model was established and then suggested the potential advantages of distributed control among the toes to regulate foot force. Finally, a physical foot model containing five compliant, adjustable toes was constructed and validated the discoveries with regard to the animals. Using the gecko toes' control strategies, the artificial foot demonstrated diverse behavior regulating attachment forces. The success of the foot prototype not only tested our understanding of the mechanism of biological attachment, but also provided a demonstration for the design and control of gecko-inspired attachment devices, grippers and other manipulators., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

Today's gecko-inspired robots have shown the ability of omnidirectional climbing on slopes with a low centre of mass. However, such an ability cannot efficiently cope with bumpy terrains or terrains with obstacles. In this study, we developed a gecko-inspired robot (Nyxbot) with an adaptable body height to overcome this limitation. Based on an analysis of the skeletal system and kinematics of real geckos, the adhesive mechanism and leg structure design of the robot were designed to endow it with adhesion and adjustable body height capabilities. Neural control with exteroceptive sensory feedback is utilised to realise body height adaptability while climbing on a slope. The locomotion performance and body adaptability of the robot were tested by conducting slope climbing and obstacle crossing experiments. The gecko robot can climb a 30° slope with spontaneous obstacle crossing (maximum obstacle height of 38% of the body height) and can climb even steeper slopes (up to 60°) without an obstacle or bump. Using 3D force measuring platforms for ground reaction force analysis of geckos and the robot, we show that the motions of the developed robot driven by neural control and the motions of geckos are dynamically comparable. The excellent locomotion ability of geckos on various rough and/or inclined substrates has attracted scientists' attention for centuries. However, the moving ability of gecko-mimicking robots on various inclined surfaces still lags far behind that of geckos, mainly because our understanding of how geckos govern their locomotion is still very poor. To reveal the fundamental mechanism of gecko locomotion and also to facilitate the design of gecko-mimicking robots, we have measured the reaction forces (RFs) acting on each individual foot of moving geckos on inverted, vertical and horizontal substrates (i.e. ceiling, wall and floor), have associated the RFs with locomotion behaviors by using high-speed camera, and have presented the relationships of the force components with patterns of reaction forces (PRFs). Geckos generate different PRF on ceiling, wall and floor, that is, the PRF is determined by the angles between the direction of gravity and the substrate on which geckos move. On the ceiling, geckos produce reversed shear forces acting on the front and hind feet, which pull away from the body in both lateral and fore-aft directions. They use a very large supporting angle from 21° to 24° to reduce the forces acting on their legs and feet. On the floor, geckos lift their bodies using a supporting angle from 76° to 78°, which not only decreases the RFs but also improves their locomotion ability. On the wall, geckos generate a reliable self-locking attachment by using a supporting angle of 14.8°, which is only about half of the critical angle of detachment.

Locusts (Locusta migratoria manilensis) are characterized by their strong flying and grasping ability. Research on the grasping mechanism and behaviour of locusts on sloping substrates plays an important role in elucidating the mechanics of hexapod locomotion. Data on the maximum angles of slope at which locusts can grasp stably (critical angles of detachment) were obtained from high-speed video recordings at 215 fps. The grasping forces were collected by using two sensors, in situations where all left legs were standing on one and the right legs on the other sensor plate. These data were used to illustrate the grasping ability of locusts on slopes with varying levels of roughness. The grasping morphologies of locusts' bodies and tarsi were observed, and the surface roughness as well as diameters of their claw tips was measured under a microscope to account for the grasping mechanism of these insects on the sloping substrate. The results showed that the claw tips and part of the pads were in contact with the inverted substrate when the mean particle diameter was in the range of 15.3-40.5 µm. The interaction between pads and substrates may improve the stability of contact, and claw tips may play a key role in keeping the attachment reliable. A model was developed to explain the significant effects of the relative size of claw tips and mean particle diameter on grasping ability as well as the observed increase in lateral force (2.09-4.05 times greater than the normal force during detachment) with increasing slope angle, which indicates that the lateral force may be extremely important in keeping the contact reliable. This research lays the groundwork for the probable design and development of biomimetic robotics.
