Abstract

The axial histidines of the truncated hemoglobin from Synechococcus cyanobacterium PCC 7002 serve as axial ligands to the iron. Results show that one of the vinyl side chains of the heme is involved in the hemoglobin protein's formation of covalent adduct to the side chains.

Abstract

Research reveals that the truncated hemoglobin of Synechocystis sp. PCC slr 2097 possesses a proximal histidine70 and another histidine46 as the sixth ligand to the iron ion. Data suggest that the sixth ligand position is critical for the protein's chemical and functional properties.

Abstract

The role of GlbN, a protein of the 2/2 hemoglobin lineage from cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002, is studied. The studies have shown that GlbN protects cells from reactive nitrogen species that is encountered naturally during growth on nitrate or under denitrifying conditions.
