Two experiments examined the hedonic responses conditioned to odor cues in the phenomenon of taste-potentiated odor aversion. Experiment 1 analyzed the microstructure of licking behavior during voluntary consumption. A tasteless odor (amyl acetate) was delivered to rats either diluted in water or mixed with saccharin before being injected with LiCl. At test, subjects which had received the odor-taste compound during conditioning showed both lower odor consumption and lick cluster size, a result indicating an increased negative evaluation of the odor. Experiment 2 examined the orofacial reactions elicited by the odor as index of its hedonic impact. During conditioning, the rats were intraorally infused with either the odor alone or the odor-saccharin compound before being injected with LiCl. At test, they were infused with the odor and their orofacial responses video recorded. More aversive orofacial responses were elicited by the odor cue in rats that had compound conditioning, again a result indicating a strengthened negative hedonic reactivity compared to animals experiencing odor aversion conditioning alone. Previous nonhuman studies have reported that sign-tracking to a conditioned stimulus (CS) is increased when the intertrial interval (ITI) duration is increased. Separate studies indicate that individual differences in sign-tracking (vs. goal-tracking) at a fixed ITI (and CS duration) is predictive of the conditioned reinforcer efficacy of the CS. The present study evaluates, for the first time, if increasing the ITI increases rats' sign-tracking and the conditioned reinforcing efficacy of the CS. Forty-five female rats were randomly assigned to one of three groups that completed appetitive Pavlovian training with ITIs of 14, 24, or 96 s. Subsequently, they completed tests of conditioned reinforcement. Replicating previous findings, longer ITIs increased sign-tracking to a lever-CS and, extending the literature, conditioned reinforcer efficacy of that CS was highest at the longest ITI used during Pavlovian training. The effect of lever height on the temporal organization of reinforced lever pressing was examined. Lever pressing was reinforced on a variable-interval 30-s schedule in rats, with lever height manipulated across six successive conditions. Parameters of the organization of responses in bouts (bout length distribution, bout-initiation rate, within-bout rate, and sequential dependency) were estimated. These estimates revealed (1) a qualitative change in the distribution of IRTs and their sequential dependency when the lever was too high, (2) a mixture of geometrically-distributed bout lengths at all lever heights, and (3) longer bouts at lower and intermediate lever heights. In accordance with previous data, these findings suggest that lower and intermediate lever heights favored lever pressing with longer bout lengths, faster bout initiation, faster within-bout responding, and more sequentially dependent timing. These results underscore the disociability of motoric capacity in operant performance, and may reflect the influence of the body size on the temporal organization of the operant. Three experiments explored the utility of considering mechanisms of occasion setting for understanding patterning and biconditional discriminations – two more complex conditional discriminations in which the stimulus-outcome relations of occasion setting are embedded. In Experiment 1, rats were trained in an appetitive conditioning task with either a biconditional or a patterning discrimination using relatively brief CSs (10 s) and differential outcomes as USs. In this study, rats learned the positive patterning task before they had learned negative patterning, and the biconditional task was the most difficult. However, a detailed examination of the results suggested that rats trained in the biconditional task responded to the stimulus compounds mainly on the basis of individual stimulus-outcome associations. Different conditioned response (CR) topographies as a function of reinforcer type complicated interpretation of these results. Experiment 2 confirmed that the biconditional task, with the parameters used here, was not learned, regardless of whether training involved differential or non-differential outcomes. In Experiment 3 the CS duration was increased to 30 s and two different USs were used that each supported similar CR topographies. Under these conditions, we observed that whereas the positive patterning task was learned most rapidly, the biconditional discrimination was learned faster than the negative patterning task. Considered in relation to other findings on patterning and biconditional discriminations, the results suggest that elemental, configural, and/or modulatory occasion setting mechanisms may play different roles in these complex conditional discrimination tasks especially as a function of stimulus duration and differential outcome training. Sexual partner preferences can be strengthened, weakened or even drastically modified via Pavlovian conditioning. For example, conditioned same-sex partner preference develops in sexually-naïve male rats that undergo same-sex cohabitation under the effects of quinpirole (QNP, D2 agonist). Here, we assessed the effect of prior heterosexual experience on the probability to develop a conditioned same-sex preference. Naïve or Sexually-experienced males received either Saline or QNP and cohabited during 24 h with a male partner that bore almond scent on the back as conditioned stimulus. This was repeated every 4 days for a total of three trials and resulted in four groups (Saline-naïve, Saline-experienced, QNP-naïve, QNP-experienced). Social and sexual preference were assessed four days after the last conditioning trial in a drug-free test in which experimental males chose between the scented familiar male and a novel sexually receptive female. Results showed that Saline-naïve, Saline-experienced and QNP-experienced displayed a clear preference for the female (opposite-sex). By contrast, only QNP-naïve males displayed a same-sex preference. Accordingly, QNP-experienced males were not affected by the conditioning process and continued to prefer females. When given a choice between an alternative with a low probability of reinforcement and discriminative stimuli, and another with a higher probability of reinforcement and non-discriminative stimuli, pigeons show a clear preference for the former but rats clearly prefer the later. It has been reported that pigeon’s suboptimal choice is associated to a diminishing effect of the stimulus correlated with non-reinforcement. In the present paper, we explored the possibility that rats' optimal choice is more strongly influenced than pigeons' by the stimulus associated to non-reinforcement and that the effects of it do not dissipate during training. We trained rats to choose between an alternative with 0.50 probability of reinforcement and discriminative stimuli, and an alternative with 0.75 probability of reinforcement and non-discriminative stimuli. We replicated the strong preference for the optimal alternative. Then, after several sessions of training, we presented summation trials in which both the stimulus associated to reinforcement and the stimulus associated to non-reinforcement were simultaneously presented. The results showed that the stimulus associated to non-reinforcement exerted a strong effect on choice, and, more importantly, that it did not seem to dissipate across training. These results suggest that the strong difference found between pigeons and rats in the suboptimal choice procedure is potentially related to differences in the impact of conditioned inhibitors. Experimentally naïve rats acquired lever pressing with delayed reinforcement when the immediate programmed consequence for lever pressing was the simultaneous retraction of two identical levers. Presses on one lever also produced access to sweetened condensed milk after a delay of 10 s following retraction. Presses on the second lever resulted in retraction only. Lever retraction prevented the possibility of adventitious reinforcement of contacting the operanda during the reinforcement delays. Several measures indicated that the delayed reinforcers strengthened behavior. The majority of responses for all rats were on the lever that initiated reinforcer delivery. Responding for seven out of eight rats decreased during a subsequent extinction phase in which retraction was the only consequence arranged for lever pressing. Responding recovered rapidly when food reinforcement was available again. Furthermore, when contingencies on the two levers were switched, rats allocated their behavior accordingly, showing control by the delayed reinforcers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A growing body of research suggests that rats represent and remember specific earlier events from the past. An important criterion for validating a rodent model of episodic memory is to establish that the content of the representation is about a specific event in the past rather than vague information about remoteness. Recent evidence suggests that rats may also represent events that are anticipated to occur in the future. An important capacity afforded by a representation of the future is the ability to plan for the occurrence of a future event. However, relatively little is known about the content of represented future events and the cognitive mechanisms that may support planning. This article reviews evidence that rats remember specific earlier events from the past, represent events that are anticipated to occur in the future, and develops criteria for validating a rodent model of future planning. These criteria include representing a specific time in the future, the ability to temporarily disengage from a plan and reactivate the plan at an appropriate time in the future, and flexibility to deploy a plan in novel conditions. Abstract: It is well established that wheel running in rats produces conditioned taste avoidance; that is, rats that run in wheels after consuming a novel-tasting solution later consume less of that solution than rats that do not run. In experiment 1, we found that wheel running also produces conditioned disgust reactions, indicated by gapes elicited by both the taste and context that were experienced before running. Experiment 2 showed that the conditioned disgust reactions were likely not due to running itself but to a by-product of running, the rocking of the wheel that occurs when the running stops. When rocking was reduced, the disgust reactions were also reduced, but consumption of the taste solution was not changed, showing dissociation of conditioned taste avoidance and disgust. These findings indicate that the taste avoidance induced by wheel running itself is more like the taste avoidance produced by rewarding drugs than that produced by nausea-inducing drugs. Abstract: In Experiment 1, compared to non-reinforced presentation of a food stimulus (A→no US), the association of a food stimulus with wheel running (A→US) blocked subsequent avoidance of a distinctive flavor (X), when both the food and flavor were followed by wheel running (AX→US). Experiment 2 replicated and extended the blocking effect, demonstrating that the amount of avoidance of X after AX→wheel training depended on the correlation between A-alone trials and wheel running—the predictiveness of the A stimulus. The present study is the first to demonstrate associative blocking of conditioned taste avoidance (CTA) induced by wheel running and strongly implicates associative learning as the basis for this kind of avoidance. Abstract: Studies of choice in steady state have shown that sensitivity to reinforcement increases with increasing fixed-ratio changeover (FR CO) requirements. We assessed the generality of this finding with choice in transition. Food deliveries were programmed according to concurrent variable–interval (VI) schedules. Seven different VI pairs arranged ratios of food deliveries (left/right) of 27:1, 9:1, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, 1:9, and 1:27 at a constant overall rate across components. Within sessions, all seven ratios were presented in random order. Each component lasted for 10 food deliveries; components were separated by 60-s blackouts. A changeover lever required 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 responses to alternate between two main levers. Redeterminations to all FR COs, but 64 responses, were obtained in descending order. Choice adjusted rapidly to rapid changes in the reinforcer ratio, tracking the lever associated with the highest probability of reinforcer. Sensitivity to reinforcement increased with increasing FR CO, replicating the negatively accelerated function found in our earlier study. With successive reinforcers in components, however, sensitivity reached asymptote values sooner with the largest (8, 16, and 32 responses), than with the smallest (1, 2, and 4 responses), FR CO requirements. Abstract: In a computer simulation, a neural network first received a simultaneous procedure, where the interstimulus interval (ISI) was 0time-steps (ts). Output activations were near zero under this procedure. The network then received a forward-delay procedure where the ISI was 8ts. Output activations increased to the near-maximum level faster than those of a control network that first received an explicitly unpaired procedure. Comparable results were obtained with rats that first received trials where a retractable lever was presented for 3s concurrently with access to water. Low-lever pressing was observed under this procedure. The rats then received trials where the lever was followed 15s after by water. Lever pressing appeared faster than a control group that received the 15-s ISI after an explicitly unpaired procedure. The model used in the simulation explains these results as connection–weight increments that promote little output activations in a simultaneous procedure, but facilitate acquisition in an optimal ISI. Abstract: In two experiments, the effects of Pavlovian or discriminative conditioned inhibitors on operant responding were investigated in rats. Experiment 1 found that a Pavlovian conditioned inhibitor for food suppressed food-reinforced lever pressing more than a non-differentially trained control stimulus did. Experiment 2 demonstrated that an operant discriminative inhibitor produced greater suppression of lever pressing than a Pavlovian conditioned inhibitor. Experiment 2 also found that compounding an operant discriminative stimulus (SD) for food-reinforced responding with another SD for food-reinforced responding resulted in more additive summation than when an SD was compounded with a Pavlovian conditioned excitor for food. The results of these experiments support two-factor theories that postulate that incentive and response discriminative processes summate algebraically when the processes are inhibitory or excitatory. Abstract: The peak interval (PI) procedure is commonly used to evaluate animals’ ability to produce timed intervals. It consists of presenting fixed interval (FI) schedules in which some of the trials are replaced by extended non-reinforced trials. Responding will often resume (resurge) at the end of the non-reinforced trials unless precautions are taken to prevent it. Response resurgence was replicated in rats and pigeons. Variation of the durations of the FI and the non-reinforced probe trials showed it to be dependent on the time when reinforcement is expected. Timing of both the normal time to reinforcement, and the subsequent time to reinforcement during the probe trials followed Weber''s law. A quantitative model of resurgence is described, suggesting how animals respond to the signaling properties of reinforcement omission. Model results were simulated using a stochastic binary counter. Abstract: This study demonstrated that with experience rats were able to discriminate the background contextual cues in order to foraging correctly in an eight-arm radial maze if the background contexts signaled to the rats which of two bait patterns was in effect in that context. Four of the eight arms were context-dependent: two arms were baited in the “night” context, while the other two were baited in the “daytime” context. The remaining four arms were context-independent: three of them were never baited, while the remaining one was baited in both contexts. The rats gradually began to avoid the arms that were uniquely baited in the other context, suggesting a contextual or conditional control of arm selection. Interestingly, these rats also showed better performance in avoiding the never-baited arms, compared with control rats. Namely, disambiguating the incentive values of the four arms by contextual cues collaterally facilitated the context-independent arm performance. Another interesting finding of the present study is that the rats did not visit the always-baited arm earlier than the arms uniquely baited in that context. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Non-reinforced preexposure to a to-be-conditioned stimulus (CS) results in retarded development of conditioned excitation and inhibition. In a magazine-approach preparation in rats, we explored the role of background context on this CS-preexposure effect by changing contexts after the preexposure treatment. Experiment 1 demonstrated with a typical three-group design that changing background contexts attenuated the CS-preexposure effect in conditioned excitation. Experiment 2 employed the identical design except that conditioned inhibition was the target of study. Preexposure to stimulus X retarded subsequent differentiation of responding to reinforced A trials and non-reinforced AX trials, suggesting that CS-preexposure retarded development of inhibitory conditioning. However, changing contexts did not attenuate the preexposure effect. We discuss these results in the framework of the extended comparator hypothesis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In a concurrent schedule, responding at each alternative is controlled by a pair of schedules that arrange reinforcers for staying at that alternative and reinforcers for switching to the other alternative. Each pair of schedules operates only while at the associated alternative. When only one pair of stay and switch schedules is presented, the rates of earning reinforcers for staying divided by the rates of earning reinforcers for switching controls the mean number responses in a visit and the mean duration of visits. The purpose of the present experiment was to see whether the sum of the rates of earning stay and switch reinforcers changed the way that run length and visit duration were affected by the ratio of the rates of stay to switch reinforcers. Rats were exposed to pairs of stay and switch schedules that varied both the ratio of the rates of earning stay and switch reinforcers and the sum of the rates of earning stay and switch reinforcers. Run lengths and visit durations were joint functions of the ratio of the rates of earning stay and switch reinforcers and the sum of the rates of earning stay and switch reinforcers. These results shows that the effect of the ratio of the sum of the rates of earning stay and switch reinforcers results from processes operating at the alternative, rather than from processes operating at both alternatives. Abstract: Nonreinforced preexposure to a conditioned stimulus impairs subsequent conditioning with that stimulus. The goal of these studies was to assess the extent to which acquisition performance could be predicted from preexposure performance using a correlational approach. For both preexposure and autoshaping, four measures of performance were computed, including overall average lever pressing, lever pressing in the initial session, percentage change in lever pressing, and slopes. These measures were correlated in a large sample of rats trained in an autoshaping situation. None of the three measures of autoshaping performance was consistently predicted by any of the three measures of preexposure performance. These results are consistent with the view that latent inhibition is not reducible to long-term habituation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Three experiments examined absolute (Experiment 1) and relative (Experiments 2a and 2b) duration effects on blocking. In Experiment 1, rats were pretrained with a short or long conditioned stimulus (CS1) followed by food, after which they were given reinforced short–short or long–long CS1–CS2 simultaneous compounds. Compared to overshadowing control groups, both pretrained groups displayed blocking, and there was no clear effect of absolute stimulus duration on the magnitude of blocking. In Experiments 2a and 2b, the rats received partially overlapping short–long CS1–CS2 compounds. In both experiments, a long CS1 blocked a short CS2, but not vice versa. This was the case when the long CS1 was nine times (Experiment 2a) or only 1.5 times (Experiment 2b) the duration of the short CS2. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of extended exposure procedures to contextual fear cues as a way of reducing intertrial responses (ITRs), a characteristic stereotyped behavior displayed in 2-way Shuttle Box avoidance overtraining. We used rat strains psychogenetically selected for efficient (Roman high-avoidance; RHA) versus poor 2-way Shuttle Box performance (Roman low-avoidance; RLA), the former being fearless/impulsive relative to the latter. Additionally, Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were compared with RHAs to have a measure of the ITRs exhibited by another, non-selected group of animals. The main findings were that after extended exposure RHAs diminished their ITRs without affecting avoidance performance, although they emitted a pattern of ITRs somewhat excessive as compared with SDs. We concluded that three factors could influence the expression of ITRs in RHA rats: (1) the repetitive and stereotyped responding induced by 2-way Shuttle Box overtraining; (2) contextual fear conditioning; and (3) a genetic background associated with high impulsiveness. In two experiments using rats in a conditioned lick suppression paradigm the effects of posttraining extinction of the conditioning context on responding to the target conditioned stimulus (CS) which had previously been paired with a footshock was examined in a neutral context. Experiment 1 replicated Marlin’s [Learn. Motiv. 13 (1981) 526] observation that this treatment can reduce responding to the target CS. This finding is contrary to other reports that context extinction enhances responding to the target CS. Experiment 2 examined the amount of posttraining context extinction as a variable potentially controlling this effect. The effect of anesthesia (Ketaset-Rompun) interpolated between the conditioned stimulus (CS) and unconditioned stimulus (US) during long-trace taste-aversion conditioning in rats was examined in three experiments. In Experiment 1, rats that were anesthetized immediately after experiencing a saccharin solution formed a taste aversion at a 3-h interval that typically does not support conditioning, a prolongation effect. Prior experience with the anesthetic eliminated the associability of the aversive consequences of the anesthetic but did not eliminate the anesthetic’s prolongation effect. Some evidence was also obtained indicating that LiCl produced an aversion at the 3-h interval in unanesthetized rats if they had experience with the anesthetic prior to conditioning. In Experiment 1a, the interval between prior experience and conditioning was extended from 24 to 96 h. Results demonstrated that the evidence for conditioning at 3 h for unanesthetized subjects in Experiment 1 was not a robust finding. By reversing the role of Ketaset-Rompun (KR) and LiCl as prior experience manipulation and US treatment in Experiment 2, the prolongation effect was shown not to be due to the summation of the aversive properties of the anesthetic and the LiCl. Research has demonstrated that rats increase their rate of lever pressing for sucrose reinforcement when food-pellet reinforcement will soon be available within the session. Recent results suggest that this increase occurs because stimuli in the session come to signal different levels of overall reinforcement. The present experiment tested this idea by having rats respond in two types of session. In one, they pressed lever A for 1% sucrose reinforcers in the first half of the session and lever B for food-pellet reinforcers in the second half (the opposing lever was retracted in the respective half). In the other, they pressed lever B for 1% sucrose reinforcers in the first half and lever A for 1% sucrose reinforcers in the second. Thus, the presence of lever A in the first half of the session was predictive of upcoming food-pellet reinforcement, but only lever B was ever used to obtain food pellets. Subjects responded at a higher rate on lever B in the first half of the session than on lever A, despite food-pellet reinforcement being unavailable in such sessions. Furthermore, they responded at a higher rate on lever B during probe sessions in which both levers were available. These results demonstrate that stimulus control over induction occurs when a stimulus becomes differentially associated with a heightened level of reinforcement. However, questions remain as to whether this association is Pavlovian or whether stimuli with “predictive value” may ever lead to induction. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We replicated the finding of bivalent conditioning of tastes by wheel running by , but without pre-exposure to the wheel. Rats received six days of conditioning with a flavoured solution presented for 10min before a 40-min placement in a running wheel and another flavoured solution presented for 10min after. A highly palatable liquid meal replacement was used as a vehicle for the flavours to encourage consumption, allowing us to equate before and after presentation intervals. Relative to a third flavour, we found that the taste preceding wheel running was consumed less, and the taste that followed wheel running was consumed more.
