Objective: Retrospective study to determine postoperative continence when correcting intramural ureteral ectopia by transection of the ureter and neoureterostomy, leaving the distal ureter in situ. We hypothesised that the technique would achieve results comparable to previously described surgical techniques., Methods: Medical records for dogs that underwent surgery for correction of unilateral intramural ureteral ectopia were reviewed. Cases (n = 9) of a neoureterostomy where the distal ureter was left in situ were included. Postoperatively, owners were contacted by telephone or email and asked to complete a questionnaire, scoring their dog's urinary continence on a scale from 0 to 2 where 0 was completely continent, 1 was occasional incontinence during excitement or while recumbent and 2 was no improvement in postoperative urinary continence, with the dog having constantly wet perivulvar fur and constant dribbling of urine., Results: All dogs showed signs of severe urinary incontinence prior to surgery, including constantly wet perivulvar fur and constant dribbling of urine. Postoperatively, six dogs had a score of 0 and three dogs improved to a score of 1. Time to follow-up after surgery ranged from 1 to 62 months., Conclusion: The results of this study support our hypothesis. The technique was simple to perform and urinary continence achieved was comparable to that of other techniques. This case report describes neurological signs associated with a pyogranulomatous lesion within the sacral vertebral canal of a horse. The clinical findings included urinary overflow incontinence and reduced anal, perianal and tail tone. The horse failed to respond to medical management and a guarded prognosis for return to athletic performance initiated the decision for euthanasia., (© 2012 The Authors. A 13-year-old male neutered Persian crossbred cat was evaluated for hindlimb paresis, ataxia and urinary incontinence that had been progressing over the previous 3 months. Neurologically, the cat had thoracolumbar spinal cord deficits and a myelogram detected the presence of a mass compressing the thoracic spinal cord. A hemilaminectomy was performed to excise the soft tissue mass, subsequently identified histologically as a psammomatous meningioma. The cat regained ambulatory function and continence following surgery until a recurrence of paresis and ataxia 36 months later. A second myelogram suggested local recurrence of the tumour, which was confirmed by histological examination of the tumour after its removal at a second laminectomy. The cat again regained normal neurological function, until a further recurrence 16 months after the second surgery. The meningioma was surgically debulked a third time and the cat regained ambulation and continence postoperatively. This case demonstrates the successful use of repeated surgical resection in the management of a recurrent spinal meningioma in a cat. The cat was ambulatory and continent at a follow-up examination 63 months after the initial presentation.

The anatomy of the canine tail and its relationship to the physiological functions of the tail are described and the effect of tail docking on these is discussed. Current knowledge on the physiology and anatomy of pain is described with particular reference to cosmetic tail docking in the neonatal puppy. Recent advances in knowledge about pain and the changes in approach to pain management, refute the premise that 'puppies do not feel pain therefore tail docking is not inhumane' and also the premise that 'the pain and the effects of tail docking are insignificant.' Six criteria to test the 'necessity' to dock dogs are presented; this article shows that the reasons advanced for tail docking do not satisfy these criteria and so that docking dogs' tails cannot be justified.

Diethylstilboestrol is currently only available in Australia for oral use in dogs and cats. As an orally and systemically active non-steroidal oestrogen, DES has been widely used in small animal veterinary medicine for a variety of indications. A review of the literature reveals that many of the recommendations for use are founded on anecdotal or unreported clinical observations. While many of the uses may be valid, accurate determinations of optimum dosing regimens have not been defined. This is especially unfortunate in view of the potential toxicity of DES to small animals. Nevertheless, particularly in cases of low-dose intermittent administration, oral DES appears indicated at least until data on alternative safe and effective interventions become available.

After grazing forage sorghum and grain sorghum regrowth, 54 of 330 breeding cows became ataxic and developed urinary incontinence. Three cows became recumbent, 2 of which died and the third was killed and autopsied. Wallerian degeneration of the white matter of the spinal cord, cerebellar peduncles and cerebellum was seen histologically. Other affected animals began to recover on removal from the crop, complete clinical recovery taking from a few days to over a month. About 5% of affected cows develped purulent cystitis.
